I have two episode left but I'm really enjoying it. Minor complaints but overall, its great. Only watched a few episode of the anime and haven't read anything. So the show is a starting point for me and it does make me want to watch the anime, which is high praise. So happy fans appear to be please with show. Anime so hard to make live action but they were able to balance things nicely. Bring on season 2!
Disney put the recent anime live action on Disney+ and it’s honestly not bad. I think the theater experience was better, but it was still pretty. Glad more people are getting int One Piece too. Thats show was great and the live action did very well.
Seeing these reviews from people that know nothing of the series has been warming my heart as a 2 decade long fan. This is a beautiful adaptation, every theme, what One Piece is really about, all of that is suppose to come clear by this point in the anime and they NAILED IT! It is not 1 to 1, and I don't think it should be. They did an amazing job with this first season! Welcome aboard my friend. Remember to bring all your hopes and dreams!
@@m0-m0597 Yes there is. It is implied that Kuina's father instilled that insecurity of hers, making her think that she could never accomplish her dream to be the greatest swordmaster because of her sex (this is canon, by the way). Garp is also kinda toxic since he's been disregarding Luffy's wishes and ambitions ever since he was a kid and tried to control his life, forcing him to follow in his footsteps.
My mom just called me to recommend one piece live action to me without knowing it was based on anything at all- it really seems to hold up well to newcomers
@@noodleydoo2862 that's cute honestly, only time my dad watched anything related to One Piece with me was when i was watching Baron Omatsuri Island and the Live Action and my mom only tagged along a little bit
The fact you, who know nothing about One Piece, and yet you totally understood the core themes of the series, is proof of how well made this live action is.
@@TheBelovedPanda elaborate for what, I literally pointed it out in my other comments already... just the point that Luffy is an orphan is completely wrong when Garp, his grandfather exist in the show and mentioned LITERALLY PROVES HIM WRONG. I don't like repeating myself so maybe just look for my comments on HOW DUMB THIS VIDEO IS.
Yeah I was surprised because I was like..."huh?" But my friend said he didn't like her much and that's sort of been a common consensus among fans? Idk all I know is that Emily Rudd RULED and the character was incredible
@@michaellane5381 which arcs would that be? Like seriously, I'm trying to think real hard which arc involves Nami's thievery that got the crew in trouble
This is nice to see because as a newcomer myself, I worried longtime fans would resent how accessible and popular this is making One Piece. I already started watching the anime and am going to add the Manga to my reading list. It's such a fun story with such pure themes of friendship and adventure, I can't wait to see where it goes!
I’m amazed at just how much of the themes you’ve caught given how subtle they are in this part of the story. Mind you, this is only the prologue and everything good here is going to be heightened going forward. I hope you stick with it cause there’s a lot here I think you’ll love.
@@derekwalter4238Or you could just let him enjoy the story however he wants. Pretty sure he knows that the manga exists so what's the point of your comment?
As a 40 year old grown man with no prior awareness of one piece, this is one of the most enjoyable and worthwhile things I’ve seen in a long long time.
I really loved how they developed koby's character and showing the paradox of two friends who have completely opposite and colliding dreams(one a pirate the other a marine) yet they still choose to act with integrity with one another it was priceless
I loved all of the koby/helmeppo development this early on by bringing the themes/vibe of early garp storyline and koby cover stories waaaaay forward. They weren't really 1:1, but given how infrequently we see those characters in the manga, it really helps instantly develop these characters, so that when they do show up in another season (thats probably trying to focus hard on getting the pace right for the main stories) we can instantly have a "oh hell yeah it's koby/garp/helmeppo" moment, rather than then having to build them. They really put together a dream team of a production crew and cast.
Of all the non-manga addition, seeing Koby/Helmeppo development this early is easily my favorite thing about the series. It gives you the vibes that Koby is the secondary protagonist next to the Strawhats.
Koby was the WORST PART about this show. Literally casted a woman for a Man's role....all the men in the world and they casted a lil skinny white girl 😂 Woke trash
@@DawnAfternoon in the manga koby, garp and helmeppo were already developed for their next moment in cover stories so its not exactly inaccurate either, only garp chasing luffy and hiring strongest swordsman in the world for that purpose is definitely a bit too out of reality
Your criticism about Garp’s motivations probably comes from the fact that the whole Marine subplot is almost completely original to the live action. In the anime, after Coby joins the marines, we basically don’t see any more of him in the East Blue saga aside from a 2 episode mini-arc about how he and Helmeppo started training under Garp, then they don’t get reintroduced into the story until after episode 300. Garp is also a lot more laid back in the anime. While he did still try to force Luffy to become a marine instead of a pirate, he never really cared about his duties as a vice-admiral unless something very important was happening
I think if they made ax hand Morgan the Garp of the live action it would have played better. Especially if helmepo sees Captain Kuro alive. It would be a turning point for the character and be in harmony with challenging pre-conceptions
I wouldn't say it's completely original. It's basically some of the early koby/garp development via cover stories adapted to the romance dawn plot. We're just getting it really early, because they can kind of get away with introducing it now and building up the characters, so that when they're trying to cram alabasta, skypiea, etc sagas into a single season, they don't have to waste budget and episode run time building them up then. It's not truly plot faithful to those cover stories, but still distills the spirit of them.
On the one hand, Garp is pretty different from how he is in the manga, but I think the changes actually worked better than some people give them credit for. In the live-action, Luffy is just starting out as a pirate, and Garp understands how the World Government works. He understands that it's merciless and that by choosing to search for the One Piece, Luffy is putting himself in its crosshairs. Luffy has yet to really prove himself, and Garp isn't sure he can handle everything that comes with being a pirate. He may have a strained relationship with his grandson, but he does love him, and doesn't want Luffy to put himself in danger. Over the course of the season, he accepts that Luffy does have what it takes to face the challenges that come with his chosen path, and he won't be dissuaded from it. Expect Garp to be more laid-back when he returns in the live-action series. By that point, Garp will know that Luffy can take everything the WG can throw at him and then some.
@@That_Lamerno it is completely original bc either in manga, cover arts, or even the anime garp never chased luffy like this or never would imo bc of his laid back and watch the younger generation go so I think we’ll see a more manga version of garp in the future szns
I'm not surprised you feel like Garp's motivation is ambiguous because in the manga he isn't present like he is here. His first appearance is during Koby's cover story and isn't introduced fully until much later in the series. It's the biggest change from the manga and anime
I enjoyed the change, ngl I didn't really care too much about Garp in both the manga and anime due to how little moments he has over the 1000+ chapters. He literally just pops in like once every blue moon or so and then he's gone, similar to Shanks. So I never really got attached to him as a character, however the L.A actually made me changed my view on him. I especially found the relationship he has with Koby really interesting and I hope that bond continues to grow so he becomes like a better mentor for Koby
@@1313__Shinobi Not to mention we get to see a transitional point for his character from wanting to protect Luffy when he was a child to where he was when we first him in the anime/manga.
@jabron.destoroyah I'm manga first and foremost so I always judge against the source material. I didn't mind Garp but his appearance so early on felt a little jarring at times
9:33 man the world building in this Live Action is extremely detailed.... the detail of the maps, everybody's clothes, the picture hanged in the background, the brand on things such as bottles and boxes, the article written on newspaper and the menu on baratie restaurant where you need to zoom in just to be able to read it.... everything is connected to the larger world. this made me 100% sure that people who made this Live Action is truly fans of One Piece
Agreed. And it reflects the detail that Oda brought to his other medium. It's yet another testament to having the creator as well as people who loves the story creating this version of the story.
There's something special about someone who hasn't seen the anime or read the manga being able to write an entire 30 minute analysis on the themes of the series by just watching the live action-- and all of it being right on point! It just goes to show that the live action captured the messages of the original perfectly.
Yeah I never did either, but it's awesome when a show like this is able come out, succeed, and get you excited about another piece of art you never thought to try. It's beautiful!
It picks up after this you don’t even know how crazy shit gets.what’s going to be in season 2 is literally gonna make people start comparing this to when game of thrones started popping off
The anime has a lot of filler & slow pacing tho. It's from an era when anime adaptations of Shonen manga stretches out the material they're adapting to oblivion. I would recommend reading the manga instead.
@@brickstonesonn9276 I've watched literally all of Pokemon. I like filler because to me it's just a character building tool. Any of the "on the last episode" or full recap stuff can be easily skipped.
As a One Piece manga reader, I personally really loved this season. Yes, they removed minor characters and other moments, but they still kept that same emotional impact when those scenes needed them. As for FilmSpeak and other new comers, don't try to rush consuming One Piece. Use the backburner method: Finish other content that is shorter, but from time to time, consume One Piece until you want a break, then rinse and repeat. It's okay to not be caught up because One Piece is a story that is more about the adventures of the Straw Hats than the climax of each arc (even though I really enjoy most of the arcs). If you are interested in picking up where the live action season 1 ended: Anime: Episode 55ish (this is near the end of the East Blue Saga) Manga: I would say chapter 95/96 The live-action does take certain plot points and easter eggs that's introduced later in the manga/anime but instead introduces it this season (SPOILER EXAMPLE) Garp's relation to Luffy doesn't happen until the next few arcs, and Koby's Marine subplot is more off-screen where as in the live-action, we actually see Koby's growth in real-time (END SPOILER EXAMPLE). I don't want to make this comment any longer, but I'm just glad they did (in my opinion) the most faithful adaptation possible for live-action medium.
I honestly feel like the emotional impactful moments work better in the live action than the manga. Like everything is more relatable, more, well closer to reality. That is not to say that there wouldn't be 100 ways to do it wrong, but they didn't. The nature of Luffy, the devil fruits, the fight scenes and all that were impossible to do from the start, but that's another story. I think they focused on the right things to make it come alive.
It's a quick read to reach that point believe me. Either way yiu won't be disappointed in fact if yiu teared up in the Live you'll be Destroyed by the Source material
It's funny how with all the recent shows based off books that have failed, game of thrones in the end, Witcher, latest Lord of the rings adaptation, Halo etc... BECAUSE they just veeted off the cliff in terms os staying close to the original material. Imagine, they stay close to the actual story, the actual characters, people like it. It's so simple it's stupid.
Something I felt about the one piece live action was two things in its execution 1. Makes people want to actually delve into the source material (me) 2. Make those that partake in the original source material appreciate and love the little details while also making them come to understand its about also transmitting the original story into a live action series It can't be exact. It has to be different and i loved it. I stopped halfway but because I decided to watch the anime, but I'll pick it up soon as I'm now on Arabasta arc atm
This. I didn't have to be perfect. It just had to be One Piece. And honestly... the Trailer suffered from Hollywood's inability to market series properly, but benefitted from having enough moments of character and One Piece' spirit to show that there was hope for a good adaptation.
Any updates on where ur at? I wanna know 👀. I have been watching this show since I was a kid so seeing so many people just starting is awesome, it puts a smile on a my face haha
There was a lot of accuracy and the casting was really good. What I think took this to the next level was the fact that everyone that participated in this showed their love for the source material and their respect towards Oda.
Whatever do you mean? I can't think of a single example ( this year) where a lead actor hating the source material backfired in any way whatsoever.... oh wait... 😜
@@linuxjodi4311 I mean, only the initial descendants would be from Wano, everyone else would be from the east blue so it makes sense. Zoro being proof enough; I've never heard any Japanese-sounding names like his lol.
As a fan of the original and someone who really hates recent remakes. I have not actually watched this live-action version, however, I will now give it a chance because of your review.
I've personally caught up with the original manga for a while now, and seeing the beginning of the journey again in live-action is... nostalgic... I don't wanna spoil what is happening in the manga right now, but seeing where Luffy is right now in the story, and then seeing him again at the start of his journey really puts me through some feels.
I think the challenge with any live action adaptation is two fold: honoring the spirit of the source material, while also delivering something that makes sense to people who are unfamiliar with it in a new medium. Often, adaptations forsake one in favor of the other. Striking a good balance is tough to execute, and I must say One Piece LA did a pretty great job at that.
I have no idea where you heard Nami was unpopular, she’s an absolutely beloved character and has been a fan favorite since the series began and consistently ranks very high in the character popularity polls shonen jump does. Maybe you got her confused with Sakura from Naruto who, yea, is a much more polarizing character.
If you had not had any type of contact with the One Piece story before, but you still completely nailed Luffy’s philosophy about what it means to be A pirate/THE Pirate King, then this show succeeded in a deeper way than is apparent at a surface level. Kudos to you, and strawhats off.
I'm a HUGE One Piece fan... and the Live Action One Piece captures the spirit of the anime/manga, both in the spirit of adventure with found family, and the spirit of the various characters, while also looking like One Piece in the action sequences. And that's all the One Piece live action had to do: It had to be ONE PIECE.
In the world wide popularity poll that Jump magazine ran to celebrate One Piece's 20th year of publication, Nami came in 3rd (Zoro 2nd, and Luffy 1st). For regional rankings, Nami came in 1st for North America. Nami *is* popular, is what I am saying. Also, Nami saves the crew like dozens of times by way of her being the most reasonable member of the crew until a certain lover of history joins. They would all be dead without her. But I guess the same could be said about all of the crew. Everyone gets moments where they save the crew from danger. Yes, even Usopp.
That's one of my favorite things about One Piece. Luffy is very aware he would not survive on his own, he needs his crew, so just like everyone depends on luffy, he himself also relies heavily on everyone else. There are so many times where a character is in critical danger as you said and then someone just barely makes it in time to save them, or characters sacrifice themselves to save others and then believes in their friends to come save them or think they won't go through the trouble of doing so which then is super satisfying when they do arrive to save them and does it with all their might leaving the character in disbelief these people would go through all of that just to save them. But that's what friends are for, which the live action too shows perfectly! This story shines in it's way of showing that we all are cappable of so much more when we put trust in those around us than when we try to do everything alone, and whole heartedly I have actually learned to trust people more because of this show :)
W vid, as someone who is up-to-date with the one piece anime, this live action has been very impressive and it gave me the feeling of watching something great for the first time again. This is probably the only live action of an anime that I would recommend to people who either don't want to watch the anime because it's too long or are new/don't watch anime.
I loved your analysis on the show, the fact that you’re unfamiliar with the source material can still find so much substance in the show really goes to show just how well they really did to bring this to life. As a manga reader it’s easy to nitpick on differences but I felt so positively about the show it gave me a greater appreciation for One Piece in general.
@hidetakamiyazaki1825 Because it's an adaptation and it wouldn't work as well as it did if it were 1:1 with the budget and number of allotted episodes
@hidetakamiyazaki1825 In my opinion, why does it matter if we lose either. I say that as someone who really loves Don Krieg, instead of getting either the LA spent that time focusing on character development that for me worked really well. I liked how Nami stayed , I felt the instant connection between Sanji and Luffy those things worked very well. I liked that the central conflict was the confrontation with Mihawk. I understand it’s disappointing some things are absent but to me that doesn’t mean it’s bad. The show isn’t worse for not having those things and I get it I have the same emotional attachment to those moments. Could the show be better with those moments, maybe but if I were to look at the show on its own merit the absence of these things does not make it not feel like One Piece or make the show worse.
@hidetakamiyazaki1825 Bowing is definitely a Japanese cultural habit and it would've been weird for western audiences to witness two European men doing it in real life. They could've done a hug but I think they chose not to, to emphasize their inability to show their real care and appreciation for each other until the very last moment when they realize it's really a goodbye. I guess this is a western trope of stubborn fathers and their sons having a very emotionally refrained relationship where even small change is really significant.
@hidetakamiyazaki1825 We got Sanji and Zeff almost leaving on bad terms but making up in the end. Don Krieg vs Luffy being removed didn't really take away any of the story and themes. Arlong was stronger than Don Krieg anyway so LA Luffy would've definitely floored Krieg. Faithful isn't 1:1. It's staying true to the spirit of the source material.
As a long-time One Piece fan, I think this was an excellent adaptation, and the fact that a newcomer like yourself was able to pick up on a lot of the nuance of the story and characters even from this streamlined version of it speaks to that. The manga is still the best way to experience this story, but this live action is a good introduction, and that alone makes it a resounding success in my book. Be aware, this season only covered the content of One Piece's prologue. There's so much more in store.
I believe Netflix One-piece is successful because the producers worked so closely with One Pieces creator. He was there with the writing team, and the production team to make sure the story that Netflix was crafting would be respecting and paying homage to the source material.
As a major fan I know that 1000 episodes or 1000 chapters is something that is hard to get in too, but there is a reason why it has been going on for so long is done really well it is funny, sad, morally screwed, odd and many other things that other anime's usually don't get to but it does have flaws but it is a amazing piece of art.
My guy, you literally gave Usopp an incredibly in-depth character study that the live-action didn’t depict as much! I loved this series as a whole and hope for more seasons in the future please!!
Usopp's characterization was just very subtle, but it was definitely there. If non fans can understand his character from the show alone then it's doing its job
11:28 - "Just because something happens to you that causes scars doesn't mean that it has to absolutely define you for the rest of time." This is almost exactly (part of) what the showrunner Matt Owens said to the manga author when pitching himself as the showrunner to him. In response, Oda said "I have 100% faith in you now."
In regards to Nami, she is generally popular, but her anime writing makes her much more annoying and selfish than the manga, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are a large portion of anime-only viewers who dislike her compared to manga readers.
I love watching people who never watch/read One Piece react to One Piece manga/anime/live-action! What One Piece has done for me has been so magical that I thought I was going insane, which is why I watch reaction videos in the first place, it is to see if other people are feeling the same powerful emotions and impacts that this series has given me. It is truly an amazing series.
If they nailed next season, I guarantee you that it will become a global phenomenon. Because as fun and epic the east blue saga is, it is like swimming in a kiddie pool compared to the adventures in the grand line.
@@Silent_reaper117 I doubt they are going to get there lmao. I’m just hoping that it at least makes to Eines Lobby, because that is my favorite arc so far of the manga (I’m in the middle of Dressrosa rn). I’m not sure if the post-time-skip stuff is even going to be doable. I suspect they will end it at the time skip if they even get there at all with Netflix’s habit of either changing things or cutting things.

As an amateur to editing, I fully appreciate the work you put into the sequencing of your cuts. As for the actual content of your words I'm surprised how much you were able to get about One Piece even though I have felt it didn't deliver the various events as strongly as it should have. I'm happy for you and everyone else new to the series who were able to just get it so quickly. Ya'll are in for a great adventure.
As a one piece fan, it’s refreshing to here an opinion that isn’t another fans. I hear a lot of hate toward how specific characters have been handled or pacing issues simply because we already know this stuff and are irritated by certain things. While I agree with some of the criticism by fans, it’s nice to here a fresh perspective who is brand new to one piece. That characters we thought were not done correctly, made your experience way better. I gives me even higher praise for the series for not only recapturing what we all love one piece for but also bringing in new people to the series.
Man, they truly did an incredible job of capturing the spirit of One Piece in the Live Action, because a lot of the points you hit are EXACTLY why all us OP fans love the anime, and to capture that magic in only 8 episodes is unreal.
"maybe that's the point" you couldn't be more right! there's way too much more to Garp than it shows in the 1st season. Anything left unanswered or "ambiguous", trust me, it's purposefully. So as long as they keep making new season, you'll eventually actually understand each and every one of those characters.
One thing about the original One Piece manga is that it 100% commits to the bit. Yes, there are sharkmen, restaurants in the middle of the ocean and fruits that can make you stretchy. But yes, there's also gut wrenching tragedy and uplifting victories and inescapable poignance. Because the live action follows its lead and both makes a larger than life ridiculous world _and_ commits to the emotional sincerity of the story, it works. It doesn't hurt that a lot of folks who worked on the show were fans, too.
Being caught up with the manga. Compared to the changes both the anime and manga make to the story of the early days. Outside of nesscary cuts to make for live action overall the live action makes much smarter changes. I like how much they devlop Koby made work even better with how great the acting for him is. Speeding up Usopp's arc. Just getting rid of Don Krieg and Pearl. Making Buggy alot scarier. I adore a very small change the most. In the manga after Nami asks for help Luffy simply responds "OKAY!". But I think the live actions line of "OF COURSE I WILL!" is much more impactful.
81 chapters, 15 pages - it's not just "okay". You can google the meaning of the original phrase "当たり前だ". But more important is the emotion on Luffy's face. The fact that the residents and Nojiko do not know the motives of Nami is the main flaw in the script of the LA. This removes the additional depth of the tragedy of the situation.
@@DmitryKey Agreed on this. I'm really not sure why they changed the village knowing about it or not. It feels like the time it would have taken for that would have been minimal if any compared to what they did show, so it seems a really odd change to have made.
@@DmitryKey And bonus lines like when the villagers are all ready to fight, and Nami, instead of trying to 'protect' everyone decides to let them join and say, "everyone, die with me!" Nami winds up being protective of Vivi in the next arc as she goes on the same journey. Instead of trying to save everyone without their inputs she can then ask for everyone to also risk their lives. This is the famous scene of her and Luffy brawling in the desert. Cutting essential scenes should not be done lightly as the series progresses.
As someone who's been following the manga and anime for over a decade, I want to say it was wonderful having you as a guest in our world. Hopefully you decide to stick around and explore a bit more, but that's entirely up to you. Appreciate your review, you really nailed it.
I loved your analysis. Hearing your thoughts I can surely ascertain that the spirit and essence of One Piece was conveyed to the new audience. I fully enjoyed the series but as neutral as I strived to be, I couldn't separate the original story from the adaptation. So I didn't grasp this aspect. I only judged it based on an adaptation level and I'm satisfied with the result. Of course, the ideas presented in the series are way way way more fleshed out in the manga, but I'm happy to know they were still transmitted quite well in the series.
I have read almost the entire One Piece manga (what's been officially translated up to around Chapter 1,050), and you've managed to nail a lot of the overarching themes despite never having read the original, and I think that speaks to how well Tomorrow Inc. and Netflix did their jobs on this. Every episode I watched, a character would say/do something and I'd say, "Yep. That's 100% in-character. They get it." The exception is Buggy, but his changes are arguably for the better.
Im 52 years old- and rarely watch TV, the last series I watched to the finish was Breaking Bad, but I loved this show. It was completely entertaining through and through. I watched all 8 episodes in 5 days which is a LOT of television for me. It was great entertainment.
Im new to one piece but it got me hooked from the starts. I can’t imagine anyone else being able to play Luffy or any of the other characters. This show was beautifully executed
The perfection of this show might have something to with accuracy to its source material which is based on. The whole cast did their assignment well. Seems like the hype for Zoro isn't dying anytime soon.
Yeah Zoro is one of the main characters of the straw hats. Luffy, Zoro and Nami. We all love the monster trio but those 3 above are the main drive of the crew. At least until the time skip.
I am legit astonished that you were able to analyze One Piece so spot on by watching ONLY the first season of the live action. Like, it's incredible - you were able to pick up on huge overarching themes of the anime as a whole from just these couple episodes. Hats off to you and the show runners!
Although some of the plot and characters were lost, 90% of the good parts have been given justice by the live action adaptation. So happy One Piece is becoming more accessible to more people. Despite it having the highest sales in comic book/manga history, it is still criminally underrated for how good it is.
Weird how that works when you aim for source material accuracy rather than “updating it for a modern audience”, with a team that loves the original story and wants to do it justice instead of one that actively antagonises it.
@@alexman378 There's a lot of accuracy but for the moments they have to change things they make sure to keep the spirit of the source manga intact. I love that. Sure, the acting could be improved. Everyone's acting in the Strawhats but Luffy and Usopp were as heavy as stones and never got to the point of it being stellar. I'm hoping that can be improved in the next season.
A perfect example of how the show runners "get it" is, they resisted the temptation to use "We Are..." as the general theme song. it only makes an appearance when the crew finally gets their hands on the Going Merry. That makes it feel EARNED, and brought a tear to this old OP Fan's eye as it started to play.
WELCOME NEW NAKAMA!!!!! hilarious that you caught on to so many themes i feel are obvious in the manga but less obvious in the live action. Well done to you and the shows producers !!
you’re almost perfectly spot on with your analysis for someone who knows nothing about One Piece outside of the live action. but the biggest misunderstanding you have is that Luffy wants to be a good pirate and wants to change how people see pirates. he really just doesn’t care and says multiple times he isn’t good and doesn’t want to be a hero because he is selfish and even steals. but he isn’t a tyrant and doesn’t do bad on purpose, he just doesn’t do good for no reason.
It really does seem like Netflix has stumbled onto their Pirates of the Caribbean- a movie no one expected to set the world on fire, was only loosely based off a Disney World ride, and yet the sheer luck of marrying great casting with superb visuals that seamlessly blend practical and digital effects makes a legendary swashbuckling good time, even if you have no idea what the source material is.
the main reason pirates went the way it did was because there was no source material to be based off of. just a theme park ride. the story was completely original. pair that with a team of writers that, while not bad. werent the best suited for the project and we end up with the dissapointing movies (I personally do not consider the PoTC movies to be bad, they are enjoyable, but they waste a lot of potential). with this they have a LOT of material to work with and with the original creator having a creative seat in the project i think we will get a good adaptation (though i doubt they will adapt it all the way through) @@samuelchurch5124
To be honest when I see the actors of the straw hats smile I can't help myself and smile with them. The chemistry of these actors makes the show work for me, especially because in german they used the original voice cast of the anime and it's a blast for me. Hearing Sanji's high pitched "NAMIII!" in Episode 8 was a nostalgic gift for me!
As much as I love the live action, I hope they show about how crazy Zoro be at times when it comes to enduring pain. I remember his fight against Cabaji and how he purposely let him stab his wound to show that it didn't affect him. Also the fight against Hatchan in Arlong Park which is axed, where Zoro proves he can defeat a capable fighter even after getting damaged by Mihawk in Baratie. I hope that it shows in season 2.
Yeah removing the scene when Arlong ripped off Zoro's bandages, he is floored on the extent of his scars and how someone can live. Well, to add another part is zoro mentioning how not even the grim reaper can't even take his life. I hope we will have that moment add in s2 when Zoro fights Mr 1.
You would think the hachi stuff would be in there especially because when they go to fishman Island later in the series they re-introduced hachi into the story
@@lpc3109 Hachi being in Arlong Park isn't necessary for his arc later on. They can still (very easily) give him a flashback with young Nami as being the one fishman that cared for the little human. This would actually flow better than how Hachi worked in the source material of being in and FIGHTING FOR a very hateful and evil crew but actually being a super chill guy.
i think hachi´s design is ging to be wildly different, the production already said they were going to use as many practical effects as they can on costumes, so far the only CGI in the series has been on the set backgrounds, some ships, zoro´s katanas breaking in the mihawk fight scene and of course arlong park collapsing.@@Kanriel making a 6 armed character with practical effects (hell, even CGI) would be a production nightmare. if they can pull it off then hats off to them but its not easy at all.
moreso props to the team that learnt from their mistakes rather than doubling down... prayers to the careers of cast and crew going upwards after this show
"How unpopular Nami is" On all popularity polls she's consistantly ranked top 5, and in many parts of the world top 3 even beating out Luffy and Zoro at times.
Haha true! It's just sort of an easy point of comparison plus Pirates sort of defined the look and feel of live action pirate movies and media going forward.
Them including a version of Buggy's cross guild speech about Shanks so early on in the live action shows care. They didn't want Buggy to just be a rando who gets important later on. Buggy is teed up to be important in the get-go. An origin befitting of a future emperor of the sea
Was that even intentional? Buggy's Cross Guild speech happened within just the past couple years -- they definitely began pre-production before that, but maybe that chapter came before the scripts were locked so they could throw it in. If that is the case, then the OPLA writers got VERY lucky.
As someone who has read and watched all of One Piece, I can tell you that this show was good. It had the spirit of One Piece and stayed true to the source material, despite having to cut a few things, which were fine. I also get that getting into One Piece can be a bit scary for some, due to the length, but trust me, once you get past the first initial chapters/episode, you will consume chapters/episodes faster and faster without even realizing, eventually complaining that there isn't enough. Most of us went through that.
OK, this is pretty awesome. What you're describing is One Piece 100% even without watching or reading the original! What you described at the beginning of the video is a great explanation of the feeling of it
Been watching One Piece half of my life being 14 years. There are many changes that I actually actively dislike, but it's definitelly not a disappointment. Can't wait what Netflix will cook for us in the future seasons.
I loved your synopsis and how you caught all the important details. I discovered One Piece about 4 yrs ago and I'm current with the story. What put me off in the beginning was some of the bizarre character designs, especially those with objects affixed to their faces or weird stich lines, but once I got into it I realized the story was so much much more than some zany pirate adventure eith cool fights but about the people you meet along the way and the impact people make on one another. There even are a number of redemption arcs as characters begin to understand each other better. Its not about where someone is in life but where they're going. Its absolutely refreshing and inspiring and reminder to have real life hope and compassion.
Love the video but the only thing I find confusing is the stuff about Nami, Nami was the third most popular character in worldwide poll One Piece has done, and I have never seen people say she is annoying, so the parts you saw about that must be a very vocal minority because many don't think that way.
One piece is about 'freedom' and the fact that u got the idea by not reading the manga or watching the anime and only by watching the series is just awesome I call it a success
I am amazed just how much of the One Piece theme, world building, and core ideas you have caught on just by the One Piece Live action, which by manga/anime content, its literally still at the beginning. The stuff you are talking about, is going to be explored and explains way farther. Basically you are already predicting future One Piece content, just by watching the Live Action version while knowing nothing of the anime/manga. I guess it shows how much you can understand film.
What an amazing analysis!!! You got everything right in YOUR FIRST ONE PIECE EXPERIENCE sand your review is one to show to spark even more interest for new people to start gettin on board on this awesome ride now that they still have time. You are really knowledgeable in stories and the way they are constructed
I think this is the best review of One Piece Live Action yet. All the others are too tied up with how it compares to the anime and the story they already know.
Buggy's lack of confidence because of someone else he trusted to take that crown,he had complete belief that guy to claim the one piece You'll get everything about it later, and honestly, its wholesome
How much of the character dynamics and themes you managed to understand from the live action really exemplifies why I loved the live action as a fan. For all the stuff they had to change or leave out, they managed to keep the soul and essence in-tact. It's FUN, you just like the characters and feel their connection, you just enjoy hanging out with them and seeing the world through their eyes. You picked up on so many of the key themes of these series even though you haven't seen or read it before, and that's a testament to how well the love action managed to capture the heart of the original. Also, Nami isn't nearly as hated as those posts imply, they're just a vocal minority. Nami is one of the most popular characters in the show.
Yep. As soon as credits ran on episode 8 I said, "There are certainly some complaints to be made, but no one can deny that this truly was One Piece". Being able to capture the essence of the story and translate it into live action is one of the most impressive things I've seen done, I cannot applaud the entire crew enough.
My only complaint is, sometimes you can feel the pacing being too fast because of how much had to be trimmed down from the Manga and anime. But at the end of the day, everything just works. They embraced the goody weirdness of the anime while still keeping the characters grounded and real. They didn't tone down the colors but made sure to not over saturate either. This feels like a passion project and you can feel the crews love for the source. Also, Emily Rudd is a Weeb, and im all for her giving the rest of the cast anime watch suggestions.
embracing the weird parts is what sells it to me. they dont look for explanations of downgrade the ridiculousness. it shows very clearly and proudly that this is an adaptation of a shonen manga and it embraces that by keeping all the goofy things seen in manga an anime in general like the wacky worldbuilding, weird characters, epic fights, ridiculous powers and attacks and my personal favourite, calling out special attacks just like in shonen works.
I'm really glad they managed to get in those layers of Arlongs character, about where his prejudice comes from. It's the power of hindsight in full-force, in the manga you only get him being racist in this arc and only get info on the plight of the fish-folk 500 chapters later. Bringing little bits of that back here was a really smart move.
I'm surprised how deep your analysis of the series is.. makes me think the series is indeed a success even with the flaws just by people like you noticing this things early on.. in the manga/anime some of us took q while to realize this deeper themes of one piece
I like the observation made between the relationship of a pirate's personal freedom and the bounty on their heads, turning it into their literal "price of freedom". The more they exercise their freedom as pirate's, the more they must shoulder results of their actions
As a long time One Piece fan I can say with confidence that I enjoyed it very much. For one, recognizing characters or things that are mentioned or shown felt exciting, I´m living for all the references they made :D And of course watching it and feeling that spirit and heart that makes One Piece one of my favorite stories is very satisfying. I´m happy with the changes they made, even though I miss some minor things here and there.
I think that this live action is fantastic and reignited my love for One Piece, that was one of my favourites anime but I stopped reading it because life happens. After seeing the live action with some friends I started reading the manga again, from the start. Can't wait for season two honestly. The only other live action that I really enjoyed is the 20th century boys one.
Honestly the best way to describe the live action is it’s unapologetically one piece. When they started using the transponder snails for communication a less confident director would’ve slipped in a line like “uUhM the snail is talking?” But no this show knows exactly what it’s trying to be and is confident they don’t have to spoon feed the audience and let them experience the world for all its glory
Agree.. and one other thing, they did jumble and mix scenes from other parts and even create their own agenda like Koby’s heart faltering because he doesn’t want to betray Luffy but i think it’s done correctly that it’s not straying far from the Anime yet original enough to be exciting
@@riardomilos8014 oh I love what they changed and like this video says really this remake was a bit of an excuse for oda to kind of streamline his ideas from those early chapters and bring them more inline with his current work and writing philosophy
As a long time One Piece anime watcher (on and off Manga reader), I am highly impressed by the live action. I think everyone involved truly cared about the product and source material and it shows! I am glad Oda was a huge part of the production journey, as well. I think that helped them a lot too. I am excited for season 2!
A lot of people complaining don't understand what "Adaptation" means, they were expecting a full 1:1 copy paste of the Anime which is unrealistic and honestly really dumb! There's so much stuff in the Anime that simply doesn't work in Live-Action.... But TLDR, *+10 years watching 1Piece I give the LA 9/10!*
Now, with manga chapter 1095 out, the analysis of Arlong has an even more interesting approach given the backstory of Kuma (another warlord that first appeared in Thriller Bark)
It's a credit to the live-action showrunners that, through their craft, the themes of the original One Piece manga have been made clear to someone who never read a chapter or watched the anime.
I had never even hear of One Piece........until Remixed by Raven did a reaction compilation video. Hell, I didn't even watch that when I came out. Halfway through them editing I started and loved what I saw so much I got a netflix subscription again. (which I hadn't had since 3 months after Arcane ended) I am absolutely fascinated with One Piece now. (I'm at fishman island and plan on ordering the manga box sets) I'm a 45 year old dude ffs and this was just a different feeling for me. I felt "childlike" joy at the end of the live action. "Hope" I think it's called....... After watching the live action I was blown away with how they casted it.........because the casting went to levels I could never have imagined even trying to pull off. Knowing what I do, now, from watching the anime.............I would have thought a live action would be impossible or horrible. I would never have imagined it pulling off half of what it did. Edit: I know now that many long time fans are not a fan of the Coby, Garp, Helmeppo angle the show did..........I absolutely loved it. Also there are so many actors that have characters that will either, never appear again, or barely will. I really hope those actors keep getting work on the show in different roles somehow. What Arlong's actor did with and through those prosthetics was amazing. The spitting fishman too. People might be thrown off by the look, I was on my first few watches, the actors did amazing!
What did YOU think of the live action One Piece?🏴☠ Were you as shocked as I was? Comment below!💥
First off, I think they do not tackle "toxic masculinity", which is not a thing. *YOU* are tackling it, not the show. 09:19

Literally casted a woman for a Man's role....all the men in the world and they casted a lil skinny white girl 😂
Woke trash
Perfectly said I was looking for this comment 😂
@@That_Lamerno it is completely original bc either in manga, cover arts, or even the anime garp never chased luffy like this or never would imo bc of his laid back and watch the younger generation go so I think we’ll see a more manga version of garp in the future szns
I'm not surprised you feel like Garp's motivation is ambiguous because in the manga he isn't present like he is here. His first appearance is during Koby's cover story and isn't introduced fully until much later in the series. It's the biggest change from the manga and anime
To be honest I thought it was a brilliant change.
@smallmight841 it's not bad for me but I just love Garp's introduced in the manga and anime. Genuinely enjoyed it
I enjoyed the change, ngl I didn't really care too much about Garp in both the manga and anime due to how little moments he has over the 1000+ chapters.

That’s what was most surprising to me, their outfits were ripped straight from the source material
Thank heavens Oda sensei have his hands on this production!

If you are interested in picking up where the live action season 1 ended:
Anime: Episode 55ish (this is near the end of the East Blue Saga)
Manga: I would say chapter 95/96
The live-action does take certain plot points and easter eggs that's introduced later in the manga/anime but instead introduces it this season (SPOILER EXAMPLE) Garp's relation to Luffy doesn't happen until the next few arcs, and Koby's Marine subplot is more off-screen where as in the live-action, we actually see Koby's growth in real-time (END SPOILER EXAMPLE).

Something I felt about the one piece live action was two things in its execution
1. Makes people want to actually delve into the source material (me)
2. Make those that partake in the original source material appreciate and love the little details while also making them come to understand its about also transmitting the original story into a live action series
It can't be exact.

To be fair she's also pretty popular given how high she ranks in the polls
@@hype5456 sakura fans are known for faking accounts to raise her popularity
It is so great finally hearing about this story from my favorite channels
I love when believed things like One Piece cross over into the mainstream and are as successful as they are!
Exactly
As a major fan I know that 1000 episodes or 1000 chapters is something that is hard to get in too, but there is a reason why it has been going on for so long is done really well it is funny, sad, morally screwed, odd and many other things that other anime's usually don't get to but it does have flaws but it is a amazing piece of art.
My guy, you literally gave Usopp an incredibly in-depth character study that the live-action didn’t depict as much! I loved this series as a whole and hope for more seasons in the future please!!
If he got it all from the live action without ever seeing the anime, then the live action series DID depict it, no?
@@asimplewizardbingo!
Usopp's characterization was just very subtle, but it was definitely there. If non fans can understand his character from the show alone then it's doing its job
I'm so impressed at how you hit on the main themes of the series, never having read it, just pulled from this live action season!
11:28 - "Just because something happens to you that causes scars doesn't mean that it has to absolutely define you for the rest of time."
This is almost exactly (part of) what the showrunner Matt Owens said to the manga author when pitching himself as the showrunner to him. In response, Oda said "I have 100% faith in you now."
In regards to Nami, she is generally popular, but her anime writing makes her much more annoying and selfish than the manga, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are a large portion of anime-only viewers who dislike her compared to manga readers.
My mom and I just watched it and she loved it. I even said as she scrolled over it she wouldn’t like it
I love watching people who never watch/read One Piece react to One Piece manga/anime/live-action!
I agree totally dude! If they do the second season well it’s gonna blow up.
I wonder what chopper will look like
I cant wait for eventually when they get to whole cake island because its my favorite arc
I suspect they will end it at the time skip if they even get there at all with Netflix’s habit of either changing things or cutting things.
you GET IT. as an enjoyer of all things one piece for years, including this live action adaptation, it warms my heart to see people like you who know and have seen nothing about one piece appreciate the wonderful story it is - characters, themes, and all - through this new take. great video, i'm glad i found your channel!
The cast is so likeable & I love how they treated the source with the respect it deserves!
"maybe that's the point" you couldn't be more right! there's way too much more to Garp than it shows in the 1st season. Anything left unanswered or "ambiguous", trust me, it's purposefully. So as long as they keep making new season, you'll eventually actually understand each and every one of those characters.
One piece is the greatest story ever told and I'm forever grateful the live action can bring in more fans
Exactly
One thing about the original One Piece manga is that it 100% commits to the bit. Yes, there are sharkmen, restaurants in the middle of the ocean and fruits that can make you stretchy. But yes, there's also gut wrenching tragedy and uplifting victories and inescapable poignance. Because the live action follows its lead and both makes a larger than life ridiculous world _and_ commits to the emotional sincerity of the story, it works.
It doesn't hurt that a lot of folks who worked on the show were fans, too.
Same here- never watched the anime or read the manga. Absolutely loved this live action and will be checking out the anime or manga all winter!
I do too, but it’s kind of hilarious because that change really amount to nothing in marineFord
Official sub translations of the Anime have him say "of course I will!".
They get it." The exception is Buggy, but his changes are arguably for the better.
they’ve translated the entire thing btw, it gets translated weekly. so 1109 chapters are out in english
@@CosmoLavZoro, sanji and luffy are the monster trio not nami.
Netflix finally did it. A great adaptation
Yup and I could be more happy about it!
@FilmSpeak i can't wait for Season 2, excellent video keep up the great work
Weird how that works when you aim for source material accuracy rather than “updating it for a modern audience”, with a team that loves the original story and wants to do it justice instead of one that actively antagonises it.
@@alexman378 I agree 100%
Superhero fatigue was really setting in.
So seeing them finally nail a live action anime, and it being One Piece is very refreshing
WELCOME NEW NAKAMA!!!!! hilarious that you caught on to so many themes i feel are obvious in the manga but less obvious in the live action. Well done to you and the shows producers !!
This live action got me into one piece. It is also great seeing an amazing live action anime adaption
you’re almost perfectly spot on with your analysis for someone who knows nothing about One Piece outside of the live action.
but the biggest misunderstanding you have is that Luffy wants to be a good pirate and wants to change how people see pirates. he really just doesn’t care and says multiple times he isn’t good and doesn’t want to be a hero because he is selfish and even steals. but he isn’t a tyrant and doesn’t do bad on purpose, he just doesn’t do good for no reason.
Yeah hopefully this doesn't go completely off the rails like Pirates did after the second movie.
the main reason pirates went the way it did was because there was no source material to be based off of. just a theme park ride. the story was completely original. pair that with a team of writers that, while not bad. werent the best suited for the project and we end up with the dissapointing movies (I personally do not consider the PoTC movies to be bad, they are enjoyable, but they waste a lot of potential). with this they have a LOT of material to work with and with the original creator having a creative seat in the project i think we will get a good adaptation (though i doubt they will adapt it all the way through)
@@samuelchurch5124
@@lpc3109the guy nami beat in cards was listed as hachi. They weren’t going to make his design work
@@lpc3109 Hachi being in Arlong Park isn't necessary for his arc later on. They can still (very easily) give him a flashback with young Nami as being the one fishman that cared for the little human. This would actually flow better than how Hachi worked in the source material of being in and FIGHTING FOR a very hateful and evil crew but actually being a super chill guy.
i think hachi´s design is ging to be wildly different, the production already said they were going to use as many practical effects as they can on costumes, so far the only CGI in the series has been on the set backgrounds, some ships, zoro´s katanas breaking in the mihawk fight scene and of course arlong park collapsing.@@Kanriel
making a 6 armed character with practical effects (hell, even CGI) would be a production nightmare. if they can pull it off then hats off to them but its not easy at all.
moreso props to the team that learnt from their mistakes rather than doubling down... prayers to the careers of cast and crew going upwards after this show
"How unpopular Nami is" On all popularity polls she's consistantly ranked top 5, and in many parts of the world top 3 even beating out Luffy and Zoro at times.
It is funny how many people call this a successor to pirates of the Caribbean when it came out several years before the first movie.
Haha true! It's just sort of an easy point of comparison plus Pirates sort of defined the look and feel of live action pirate movies and media going forward.
I prefer to think of One Piece as “Anime Treasure Island.”
@@paulchapman8023 Considering Oda named a major character after Long John Silver, you're not far off, lol
Never saw the anime. Popped this live action on, and absolutely LOVED IT FROM START TO FINISH!!!!!!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it
OK, this is pretty awesome.
One piece is about 'freedom' and the fact that u got the idea by not reading the manga or watching the anime and only by watching the series is just awesome
I call it a success
Yes, its freedom, they break the chains, liberty people too
I am amazed just how much of the One Piece theme, world building, and core ideas you have caught on just by the One Piece Live action, which by manga/anime content, its literally still at the beginning.
I'm really glad you liked it. It only gets better and better!
2:50 "Overly positive & infallible protag"
Also Filmspeak: showing Yami Yugi
Me: "Thanks for the laugh, mate."
I think this is the best review of One Piece Live Action yet. All the others are too tied up with how it compares to the anime and the story they already know.
Thank you so much! That really means a lot.
Welcome to the crew! You picked up on the themes pretty quick. Buckle up, it gets so much bigger.
The themes present in this show are exactly what the world needs right now too.
Buggy's lack of confidence because of someone else he trusted to take that crown,he had complete belief that guy to claim the one piece
You'll get everything about it later, and honestly, its wholesome
0:12 SERIOUSLY? Zoro is ALREADY lost?!
Luffy asked the writters "what is ur dream and dont be stupid!" They wrote it, oda cut some and approved the rest. History was made!
I like the observation made between the relationship of a pirate's personal freedom and the bounty on their heads, turning it into their literal "price of freedom".
The more they exercise their freedom as pirate's, the more they must shoulder results of their actions
I loved their version, it's faithful to the manga and very good.
As a long time One Piece fan I can say with confidence that I enjoyed it very much.
For one, recognizing characters or things that are mentioned or shown felt exciting, I´m living for all the references they made :D
And of course watching it and feeling that spirit and heart that makes One Piece one of my favorite stories is very satisfying.
I´m happy with the changes they made, even though I miss some minor things here and there.
As someone who's been following the story arc since Shonen Jump, I was highly impressed with this breakdown!!
I had 0 hopes for this and I have never been happier to be wrong.
one piece beeing partly about dreams is the greatest understatement i have heard this year
I think that this live action is fantastic and reignited my love for One Piece, that was one of my favourites anime but I stopped reading it because life happens.
@@simianurchin7630 yeah, i hope the WIT remake include these wilder ideas and more darker, serious undertone to One Piece.
As a long time One Piece anime watcher (on and off Manga reader), I am highly impressed by the live action. I think everyone involved truly cared about the product and source material and it shows! I am glad Oda was a huge part of the production journey, as well. I think that helped them a lot too. I am excited for season 2!
I've never watched, now I'm on my way to being a one-piece nerd. Loved the show so much
A lot of people complaining don't understand what "Adaptation" means, they were expecting a full 1:1 copy paste of the Anime which is unrealistic and honestly really dumb!
(which I hadn't had since 3 months after Arcane ended)
I am absolutely fascinated with One Piece now. (I'm at fishman island and plan on ordering the manga box sets)
I'm a 45 year old dude ffs and this was just a different feeling for me.
