Dave Alvin’s never gotten enough credit as a songwriter, guitarist and performer on the big stage in my opinion. He an American treasure. Truly a great musician! Rock on Dave!!!
Happy 4th of July 2024!!! This song reminds me of my ex husband, met 1982, divorced 1987...just texted, we live in different states now...this song always makes me cry...GREAT song!!!

It’s true. He just nails the whole thing with a few simple words Davis great I’ve seen him a number of times and he’s a very nice guy… But there’s nothing like X bashing this song out like a howitzer.
Happy 4th!!!!!!!!!!! Blasters and Dave RULE!!!!!!!!!!!! X too!!! "Now my mother's gone, now my fathers gone And all the old blues men have all passed on And I'm out on this highway travelin' town to town Settin' up my gear and then I'm tearin' it down Turnin' up my guitar, standin' up on the stage I'm just tryin' to raise the ghosts up out of their graves"
Someone already said that this man is an American Treasure! He's so much more to me than that. He's also a teacher, a preacher and a guru from next to that dried-up river. God bless him always, and his brother also. I just love this man!!!
NINE years ago ust saw them tonight in San Frnacisco - with Jimmy Dale Gilmore. I'm 65 and have reviewed and viewed a LOT of bands in my life -- some have been as good as Dave Alvin's band -- but NONE better. None make you feel more satisfied at the end of the show. Just...SO damn good. And shout out to Miss Lisa -- such an amazing drummer and somehow always looks pretty and fresh as a rose.
I saw Dave Alvin at The Folly Theater in Kansas City years ago, maybe ten years ago and it was hands down one of the best concerts that I have ever seen, I believe he was with his all female band The Guilty Women and they were fantastic, just a great show, he played an acoustic set then his electric guitar, I love that he uses one guitar, God Bless you Dave
My wife Leann and I were at this Ark show and every show Dave's played solo or with brother Phil in the Detroit area. He is ALWAYS excellent. Why this song is not a country standard, I have no idea. I urge anyone here to seek out Dave and Phil Alvin's other records and see them live. Support quality Americana music !
Towards the end when Dave and his Bassist are just in sync and the lead guy is supporting with grace and the gal drummer is in lock step...everyone looking to see where the hell this ride ends is just sublime baby! Thanks to you Dave Alvin and amigos!!!!

I was in attendance at this show at The Ark in Ann Arbor Michigan. Dave and his band mates were stellar. I’ve seen Dave three times, and would not pass up the opportunity to see him again.
Drummer Liz Pankratz is perfect for this band. Never in the way, always deep in the groove and I love the whole bands build up to the crescendo at 5:05. Thats how its done, kids.
Thanks for that shout out for Liz! Every iteration of Dave and the Guilty people of all persuasions that I have had the pleasure of seeing in the last twenty years has had her glorious hard driving beats as a foundation stone. And every show includes the rest of the band giving her a moment to unleash a solo that just leaves me breathless and in awe.
This song is the ONLY THING i like about this holiday - Today... the 4th of July. In 1980 I was in hellish marriage - we fought so much, we could easily forget what day it was. But... We lived in L.A. and got to see X, The Blasters and all that stuff - There were some good nights as a consolation. At 3:40, when this song blasts into a new dimension, I just burst into tears of astonishment and JOY. Thanks a lot.
I played with his drummer, Lisa Pankratz when she was with the Cornell Hurd band in Austin. She is seriously one of the best American drummers of the last 30 years.
This is well-written, well-played and perfectly sung. Alvin rocks this so hard and looks so relaxed, doesn't even break a sweatl This is one great group of musicians playing a great, heartfelt song, about an America I can fully get behind. My cowboy hat's off to you, Dave. You and your band brought the goods.
Performers such as Dave Allen and John Doe are underrated artists speaking out for the lost and disenfranchised with their hearts firmly on their sleeves. I would bet good money if "4th of July" started getting air play in this day and age it gould go to number one the modern country charts. X was ahead of it's time.
You are so right. They are my favorite band of all time. This song is just so perfect in the way it captures that moment and those of its type. The older I get the more that song touches me.
@@jennyrabbit4643 Honestly, I'm not even a giant X fan, but this may well be the greatest rock song ever written. Credit where it's due. This version in particular is simply astonishing.
It's absolutely jaw-dropping. I've seen this clip at least 150 times, and honestly, I've never heard a more perfect tone from any Fender, and he just puts his whole body into his playing. Maybe my favourite solo of all time.
Saw Dave & the Guilty Ones at the Roots on the River Fest on June 7, 2013 and they blew the roof off the tent with a blistering 2 hour show! The 4th of July is my (Canadian) wife's birthday too !
Late to the party. Stumbled across Dave Alvin when looking in to the origins of this song (discovered via "X"). This HAS to be one of the greatest live performances ever. This is intense! Everyone is absolutely crushing it.
Love this song...a relationship maybe lost, and the singer's observations....adult, sad and yet the music makes you think maybe there's redemption possible. Keep it coming, Mr. Alvin!

Yep! One of the best Strats I've ever heard. People talk a lot about 1960 and 1962 Stratocasters, but I played a '64 that was absolutely amazing. Very similar sound to Dave's. Also a bit of a sucker for the transitional decal...

And to think, he wrote Marie Marie as a teenager in Southern California. His writing genius began at a very early age.
I’ll second that , get better as time rolls on.
could not agree more!
The Alvins have been top credits in my household for... 40 years now, damn!
Amen to that.... and Snoop Diggety Doggy is a multimillionaire???....What the heck???

Best song!
Yes. Reminds me of an ex as well. Sometimes There's a reason they are ex's. HUGS.
“Walk outside...It’s the Fourth of July!!”
Best advice, ever.
This should be much more an American anthem than it is. Dave Alvin is one of our most underappreciated national treasures.
Dave is a living American treasure. I can't imagine an Independence Day passing without hearing this song.
i listen to the 4th of july song every 4th of july. x's version also. hey hey baby....it's the 4th of july!

There is only one Dave Alvin.
Great songwriter....performer, guitar hero, band leader.
There are actually four Dave Alvins in Texas alone.
This song still gives me chills. "Whatever happened, I apologize. Dry your tears and baby walk outside."
Yep every 4th of July this is my go to song to start my day. Love Dave Alvin. Agreed he is an amazing song writer, never enough credit.
A terrific singer and songwriter. He wrote the most moving song about the Civil War I've ever heard..."Andersonville."

Stunning! Great band and so good to see awesome TX drummer Lisa Pankratz, one of Dave's Guilty Women!

great facials
I was going to shout out for her, too. I love Dave, but seriously - she is wonderful.
An American original, the great Dave Alvin! The 4th ain't complete without listening to and singing this song!!!
My fav artist, an American icon!
I think that big smile on Dave's face says it all

Hell yeah. That's the moment he drops into his stance and opens the throttle wide. Shivers and tears, no matter how many times I listen to it.
It's the Fourth of July. Love Dave and his band.
Good grief, this is just so good!
Saw Dave with Jimmie Dale Gilmore last night in Berkeley. Wonderful 2+ hour show filled with great music, stories and laughter.
‘Seen this particular lineup, with Texas bred drummer Lisa Mankritz, and it is a winner!
Lisa Pankratz...
I played with his drummer, Lisa Pankratz when she was with the Cornell Hurd band in Austin. She is seriously one of the best American drummers of the last 30 years.

How have I gone this long without hearing of Dave Alvin!?
Check out The Blasters, his band with his brother Phil Alvin. You’re in for a treat! PS Dave was an original member of X.
Great song. Great band. So good.
He's just another one of the greatest, a dying breed if ya ask me . Not gonna be any left soon and I CRY ! Never be the same.
I didn't expect that second guitar break. Damn.
Yeah. Damn. Who knew Dave could play lead?

I love Dave Alvin and everything he does, but I must now go watch X do this. :)
He wrote it for them.
Their version is so much better.

Brilliant. This is American art at it's best.
Damn good performance by all.
