NINE years ago ust saw them tonight in San Frnacisco - with Jimmy Dale Gilmore. I'm 65 and have reviewed and viewed a LOT of bands in my life -- some have been as good as Dave Alvin's band -- but NONE better. None make you feel more satisfied at the end of the show. Just...SO damn good. And shout out to Miss Lisa -- such an amazing drummer and somehow always looks pretty and fresh as a rose.

"Now my mother's gone, now my fathers gone
And all the old blues men have all passed on
And I'm out on this highway travelin' town to town
Settin' up my gear and then I'm tearin' it down
Turnin' up my guitar, standin' up on the stage
I'm just tryin' to raise the ghosts up out of their graves"

Why this song is not a country standard, I have no idea. I urge anyone here to seek out Dave and Phil Alvin's other records and see them live. Support quality Americana music !

Performers such as Dave Allen and John Doe are underrated artists speaking out for the lost and disenfranchised with their hearts firmly on their sleeves. I would bet good money if "4th of July" started getting air play in this day and age it gould go to number one the modern country charts. X was ahead of it's time.

This song is the ONLY THING i like about this holiday - Today... the 4th of July. In 1980 I was in hellish marriage - we fought so much, we could easily forget what day it was. But... We lived in L.A. and got to see X, The Blasters and all that stuff - There were some good nights as a consolation. At 3:40, when this song blasts into a new dimension, I just burst into tears of astonishment and JOY. Thanks a lot.

I heard the X version first and never realized Dave Alvin wrote this song. I remember seeing Dave and John Doe in the film “Border Radio” and being really intrigued by Dave Alvin. I like this version better than X’s, the more I listen to it.
