As I’m sure you guys now know, the old white guy actually was Eddie Murphy.
Reminds me of that classic bit on SNL when he went around the city as a white man and he was treated entirely differently.

Rick Baker knows his make up , cant get 7 Oscars for make up if you are bad at it . He did opposite make up in Tropic Thunder , Downey Jr black face .
Also some more unknown movies like Star Wars 1977 , The Empire strikes back 1980 and An American Werewolf in London , but no one has ever seen those .

Eddie Murphy was a lot of people in this movie...
When I got married, my wife allowed me to play "Sheeeee's your...queeeeeeen tooohoooo beeeee!" once they announced us a husband and wife. About half the people started cracking up, the other half had no idea what was going on. It was incredible.
Please say that's on video somewhere!

the homeless men who he gives the bag of cash to are the Duke brothers from Trading Places, if you haven't seen that I suggest it.

I saw Coming to America several times before I saw Trading Places for the first time. So the reference flew over my head at first as well.

I presumed that having Patrice use the line in a totally in appropriate way was a way to show that she's not as well-educated as Lisa is.
This movie was an extreme hit when it debuted. I saw it when I was a kid. I loved it. The two old bums are the villains from Trading Places (1983 - Dan Akroyd, Eddie Murphy) which was another great comedy. Eddie Murphy was huge in the 80's. His standup routines were major hits as well. Several of his films like 48 hours and Beverly Hills Cop are worth reactions if you haven't seen them.

Rundolf and Mortimer definitly you ahe seen this movie
Don Ameche (Randolph) and Ralph Bellamy (Mortimer) were big movie stars back in the 30's & 40's. Just about everybody in this movie was famous for film or TV shows or stand-up comedy. Even small parts like the cab driver or the counter guy in McDowell's or the guy in the barber chair. ❤️ this movie so much.
I second watching Trading Places, it's a classic, Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis are great in it.
The Jewish guy in the barber shop was indeed Eddie Murphy. The two bums (Mortimer and Randolph) were the villains of the 1983 movie Trading Places, starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd. A comedy classic which you should definitely check out!
John Amos tripping over those stairs was a real accident. He stayed in the moment and the director kept it in the movie. What a pro!

I remember watching his RAW show on dvd and him talking about getting an African wife who's never heard of him before.
This movie was up for two Oscars: Best Makeup (yes, the Jewish man WAS Eddie Murphy), and Best Costume Design. And while you may recognize the father as Mufasa, the mother is also Serabi. A fun little reunion in The Lion King. ^-^
And yeah my dad quoted this movie ALL the time. One of his favorite comedies. ❤️

Definitely watch Trading Places for another good Eddie Murphy movie from the same Era. Arguably even better with Dan Ankroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis, and you will get the two old homeless guy cameos.

This was one of my dad’s favorite movies. He would watch it every time it was on tv. And laugh so much even tho he already knew the jokes. 😂
There's a try not to laugh reactor I've seen on here that has that kinda sense of humor. Hell do compilations and never succeed because he finds it funnier when he knows it's coming.
What I like about this movie is that Akeem and Lisa were facing the same dilemma in different settings and that's successful parents arranging a marriage for them instead of allowing them to find love for themselves.
To be fair, McDowell wasn't as extreme about it as the king. He was encouraging the relationship between Lisa & Darryl but didn't know that the latter lied about the engagement.
George is right: "Goodnight, sweet prince" is what Horatio says to Hamlet as Hamlet dies.

Just an FYI. 18:50, when the two homeless guys get the money. This is a crossover from an earlier movie starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd called Trading Places.
Yeah you both need to see 'Trading Places' but you may as well save it for December now as it can be argued it's a Christmas movie.
Why not just tell them to see the movie and let them figure it out instead of spoiling the surprise.

To be fair, it's really the John Landis Cinematic Universe, but that didn't end up turning out well.

The Randy Watson sequence is still one of my favourite bits of comedy ever.
Introducing him as Joe the policeman from what the "What's going down?" episode of "That's my Momma" immediately had me laughing

Fun fact: in the scene where the father gets back and forward to the door, he wasn't meant to slip, but the way the actor stayed in character, had the director to keep it for the final cut.
Its funny that she commented how the opening of the music made her think of The Lion King, as the King and Queen in this movie also voiced Simba's parents! haha
The third star of this movie is makeup artist Rick Baker. Eddie and Rick worked together many times after this (with varying results).

Great choice for a reaction! I saw this movie in the theater the weekend it came out. Lots of cameos. John Amos, Mr McDowell and the guy who recognized Prince Akeem at the game both appeared in Die Hard 2. The taxi driver who took them to Queens was Jake Steinfeld, a stand up comedian and fitness guru from the 80s. He had a workout program and tv show called Body by Jake.
Also, Hailee Steinfeld's uncle.

When Simone pointed out how good Samuel L. Jackson is at yelling, it reminded me of The Chapelle Show commercial for Samuel Jackson beer. Someone asked him if he could please stop yelling and he responded ,"I'M NOT YELLING! THIS IS MY NATURAL TONE OF VOICE!"
The throwback to Trading Places is one of my favorite moments.

Just a mention here. The King and Queen are played by the same actors who played Mufasa and Sarabi in The Lion King: James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair.
The sequel was fun. I watched it with my roomies, and we laughed.
Soul Glow was not a real product but the hairstyle, the Jerry Curl was a very really and is pretty universally agreed upon as one of those fashion mistakes that will probably never come back into style.
When I was in HS it was the "big trend" and this guy who sat next to me in one of the classes was CONTINUOUSLY spraying that Jheri Curl shit on. He'd not shower after gym class so he'd come in stinking and smelling of Jheri Curl juice.

"Coming To America" and "Trading Places" are my favorite Eddie Murphy movies. I wish you would have watched Trading Places first so you could recognize a short scene that connects the two movies.

LOL, totally forgot that Vader reference "I will deal with them myself." And the fact that Mufasa was already a king wearing a lion shawl was a nice precursor to The Lion King. Simone's Tommy Wiseu was perfectly timed.
Hysterical classic! The McDowell's restaurant was actually a Wendy's for many years when I was growing up. It was on Queen's Blvd, right by the Queens Center Mall.

Celebrity paradox: Akeem is nicknamed "Kunta Kinte," which is a character from Alex Haley's "Roots." The older version of Kunta (Toby) was played by John Amos, Mr. McDowell in this film.
James Earl Jones is always great. This is one of those movies that is perfectly over the top. They know exactly how far to go without taking you out of it and losing the story.

The song from the intro is actually a version of the song from the lion king (The lion sleeps tonight). The original is called Mbube, and was written by a South African. Murphy wanted a version of that song for the intro.

Almost no reaction YTer seems to notice that the opening music is "Mbube", the original song that became "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" in the US. Which is kind of hilarious, especially considering James Earl Jones later playing Simba's dad in The Lion King...

I've watched this movie about 30 times, just brilliant.
I love this movie! The jokes still land even if you don't get all the 80s references😂. Watching this reaction I clapped when Lisa's Dad said he would break his foot off in JEJ. This movie has a lot of heart too.... I think that kind of heart is what is missing in the sequel. But it is still worth seeing for the continuing story of these characters.
I couldn't take more than 10 min of the sequel from all the forced jokes.
A sequel wasn't necessary,the first film was enough,you had Eddie & company all in their prime.Why wait 20 plus years for a sequel ???

A Mcdonalds once changed themselves over to Mcdowells for a special occasion..... Eddie and Arsenio play so many roles in this movie it's crazy.. [Randolph and Mortimer are from an earlier Eddie murphy movie called Trading Places where they lost everything over a bet and some hijinks involving Eddie and Dan Akroyd] Eddie Murphy is the old man in makeup

Some good stars in this, both from that time and the future. When they first walked into the barber shop, the young man in the barber's chair was Cuba Gooding. Maurica, the chubby guy who worked at the restaurant, was Louie Anderson who was a pretty big comic at the time. The dad, Mr, McDowell played by John Amos who had his own TV show called "Good Times" and appeared in other successful shows back in those days. You saw that Eddie and Arsenio were others in the movie; both played 4 parts. Eddie not only was the barber but was the Jewish guy Saul in the shop too. And then he was the soul singer Randy Watson, doing a takeoff of sorts on James Brown, so total of 4 parts for him. Arsenio is also Morris, the other barber then Reverend Brown and also Baba, the grandfather. Good stuff!!
I wish you guys would’ve seen “Trading Places” before this. It’s one of thee best comedies of the 80s plus you would’ve gotten that little Randolph/ Mortimer scene

The McDowell's was actually a Wendy's at the time so it was a real working fast food restaurant. After the movie, they had pictures up of the cast hung up around the place. Sadly, they tore it down a few years ago. You both definitely need to see Trading Places.
I was a kid working at a different Wendy’s at the time this movie came out. As I understand, management was NOT happy about this; the franchise didn’t get permission to use the building in the movie.
In some scenes, you can see the (at the time) Wendy’s products on the menu board, and also the Wendy’s logo on the red oven in the kitchen.

@@fubar1217 the Samuel L Jackson scene gives the best shot of the menu board. Remember at the time they had a Chicken Club sandwich (essentially chicken with bacon), the “Garden Spot” salad bar, and the stuffed baked potatoes, which you can see clearly in the movie.
The oven is (I think) seen the first time Cleo escorts Akeem and Semi through the kitchen. The detail of the logo is out of focus, but the shape is unmistakeable.
Beyond loving you guys, I cannot begin to tell you how happy it makes me when Simone wears her The Band t-shirt. In your spare time, you should watch The Last Waltz, if you haven’t. Cheers!
A bit of history about Eddie with the old Jewish man costume, he was so convincing, he fooled a older Jewish woman and others that didn’t know it was him in costume ( Thank Rick Baker ) for his incredible costume designs . He also did King Kong 79’
They actually sown skateboards into the train so she could move. Also the choreography for the big dance scene was done by Paula Abdul.
Trading Places is an excellent movie, Eddie Murphy's first big hit iirc (48 hours was his first movie, also quite good), bonus it's also a Christmas movie so should definitely be on your list, and will explain the randolph and mortimer scene (where he gives the money to the bums).
Love your reactions. I think The Last Starfighter, an older 1984 campy sci fi flick would be right up your ally. The room at the end of Ready Player One was taken from the main character’s bedroom in that movie.

Randolph and Mortimer were two characters from a previous Eddie Murphy comedy, Trading Places. Well worth watching.
13:26 Seventies reference that missed you. 'Kunta Kinte' was the name of a character in 'Roots' a TV milestone series based on Alex Haleys book Roots: The saga of an American Family which traced his own family history back to the African slaves - hence the reference to Akeem. Roots was very good, if uncomfortable viewing but it's generally accepted to be more fiction than fact about the authors own real family. Young Kunta was played by LeVar Burton of Star Trek fame and the older Kunta was played by - John Amos AKA Mr McDowell the restaurant owner !

Therefore, the United States seemed big to them compared to their country of Zamunda, not compared to the continent of Africa. Just a little FYI
On the start is seemed that Simone has upgraded to another jedi level: besides predicting plot elements she even got some dialogue up front. She calmed down soon after

Yes, there are still beauty pageants. One similar business that seems to have slowly faded away are the promotional models at car shows, boat shows, and that sort of thing.
