@Missy-24 it's just more of a Western saying, so it'd make sense (to American and Canadians) that most other countries wouldn't call other immigrants aliens
If neither of you have seen "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", that would be why you didn't get the significance of the flat-top mountain (which is a real place in Wyoming). Also, Blythe Danner (who played older Tara) bears a very strong resemblance to Melinda Dillion, who was in "Close Encounters". I suspect that was one of the reasons why Danner was in this movie.
"If"? The fastest way to tell someone you have never seen that movie is to not recognize Mato Tipila. 2nd is to not recognize the famous musical motif. 😀
When Jason Bateman shoots and says "It was a boring conversation anyway." Its the scene from Star Wars where Han shoots the the control panel when they are trying to break Princess Leia out.
Lorenzo's Oil is a 1992 Susan Sarandon / Nick Nolte film based on a true story about parents trying to find a treatment/cure for their son, Lorenzo, who was diagnosed with adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). The experimental treatment that was developed for asymptomatic ALD is derived from olive oil and rapeseed oil (what we call Canola oil in the store), and was named after their child, Lorenzo Odone, thus Lorenzo's Oil.
3:28 The word "alien" doesn't just refer to extraterrestrial lifeforms. It also just means something that's unknown/foreign. As such the term 'alien' is also often used for foreigners, including immigrants.
The latino room attendant saying "What do you mean aliens??" was thinking they might have meant illegal aliens. The agent named Lorenzo Zoyle was a reference to a movie title "Lorenzo's Oil" Agent Zoyle shot the radio and said, "Boring conversation anyway" as a reference to Han Solo doing the same during the prison break in Star Wars. "I can't believe she's gone" was another Star Wars reference. The "Black Vampire" sword was a reference to the movie "Blade". Watch the book release scene at the very end of the movie closely. The agent who "perished" in the house explosion was in the audience as a very excited burn victim.
I love this movie. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are hilarious. It was the first time I (as an Aussie who didn’t really know SNL) had heard of Kristen Wiig and I thought she was hysterical in this.
Fun Fact: when Ruth asks where the 3rd guy is ("where is the other one?"), because she heard 3 voices or shows 3 shadows the day before, in the French version, she asks "where is the 3rd "type"" ("Où est le 3ème type ?") , because "type" can designate a guy, but it's is a little play on words, because "une rencontre du 3ème type" in French = "encounters of the third kind", like Spielberg's film. (logically translated into French as: "Rencontre du troisième type" for "Encounters of the Third Kind") I think it's a very good adaptation/translation. And the "Boring conversation anyway" after shooting on the radio, is a StarWars Episode IV A New Hope reference, with Han Solo in the Death Star.
*BEST TRIVIA:* This film came about because on the set of SHAUN OF THE DEAD, whilst being interviewed for a magazine, they were asked _"So, what's you're next film about?"_ ... and one of them joked the answer _"Two friends go across America and find an alien"_ ... this story stayed with them over the years and because of constant delays in the making of the third Cornetto movie, they decided to sit down and write it, being made before AT WORLD'S END, this is what made people call it the unofficial entry. My daughter and I love spaced. It was originally scripted because of how unrealistic friends was at representing our age group so Pegg, Frost and Edgat Wright created Spaced and let's face it, I'd rather be in Spaced.
See, now you have to react to Jason Bateman in "Hancock". There are SOOOOOOOOO many SF references in this film! I can't believe George has no idea what Devil's Tower is (the strange mountain-like feature he thinks has a spaceship inside it), or that it's the central image in Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". 23:16 - "What? I don't get it." - That's Devil's Tower, an iconic location from the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. 25:00 - "Lorenzo's Oil?" - It's the name of a 1992 movie.
There are so many references in this movie that are flying clean over your heads (but that's an easy problem to fix, just catch up on all these great shows!): Close Encounters of the Third Kind (my favourite movie of all time) - the opening scene, the Devil's Tower, Wyoming reference, her leaving with the ship, the mother ship reveal, even the helicopter fake-out. Basically the entire backbone of the movie is a Close Encounters homage. The X-Files. Alien(s). The Karate Kid (the hand-rubbing gesture Paul does before applying his powers). Roswell (the TV show, which had a remake more recently - the healing power probably came from there). Total Recall (three-breasted alien chick). Indiana Jones (the short-round reference). Star Wars series. Probably a ton of others.
That was really Stephen Spielberg on the phone, he did It as a favour as Pegg & Frost were also doing Tintin at the time playing Thomson & Thompson which Spielberg directed
The Little A'lee'Inn is a real cafe in Roswell. Lorenzo Zoil is supposed to sound like Lorenzo's Oil which is a movie about a man who invented a special oil to treat his son's sickness.
24:43 Another Classic reference, and Blythe Danner will always be both Hotter and Cooler than her daughter. 24:56 "Lorenzo's Oil" was a 1992 Drama starring Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon. I hope the guy who's been requesting this for literal years is having a good day today. Nice of you guys to get around to watching it even though it never performed too well on a poll.
22:58
Love the quote from Han Solo, StarWars, A New Hope.
I love that idea George has that Earth is the Mexico of the galaxy where alien teens take their gap year. Please George and Simone write this story now!
11:55 not to know the most iconic sci-fi series of the 90s o.O
23:16 - "What? I don't get it." - That's Devil's Tower, an iconic location from the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
25:00 - "Lorenzo's Oil?" - It's the name of a 1992 movie.
22:34 “I’m on a mission from God!”
Didn’t notice that Blues Brothers reference the first time I watched this movie.
9:50 you could say George ATE his words with that one
"28:52 Issz that Diane Spencer 'bietveen' Frost y Pegg?"
There are so many references in this movie that are flying clean over your heads (but that's an easy problem to fix, just catch up on all these great shows!):
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (my favourite movie of all time) - the opening scene, the Devil's Tower, Wyoming reference, her leaving with the ship, the mother ship reveal, even the helicopter fake-out.
The soundbites at the end. Thanks, Simone. LoL ALSO: "Game Night" (2018) Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams +
Always wanted to see this movies' reaction.... Ur channel is the only one that has it!!!
22:57 That is a Star Wars Episode IV quote when Han Solo shoots the console in the cell block 😂
3:25 Was an _"illegal aliens"_ joke George, because the room service guy was from south of the border.
24:43 Another Classic reference, and Blythe Danner will always be both Hotter and Cooler than her daughter.
24:56 "Lorenzo's Oil" was a 1992 Drama starring Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon. I've never watched it, but I worked in a video store through the mid-nineties.😉
26:19 Jinx! George owes me a Coke. But we'll let it slide since he did ask for a "squashing", and his wish is granted momentarily.
28:31 Phrasing! C'mon guys, are we not doing "Phrasing" anymore? 30:30 Best trivia section ever, because of that intro. 🤣
You need to watch “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” to understand the reference to the mountain
Welcome back George!.
Unless this was pre-recorded while he’s recovering.
If so, get well soon, George!
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost did a video for Collage Humor while on location filming Paul. It's them recreating a scene from Star Wars with C3PO and R2-D2. Really worth checking out, only a few minutes long.
24:54 "Lorenzo's Oil" is a George Miller movie. The joke is that his name is play-on of that film.
Jason B shoots the Radio..."This is a boring Conversation".....Straight outa Star Wars..Solo in the Detention Center..=))
George!! GREAT to see you are up and about and no longer in the hospital!!❤❤
