This is a 2-year review of ForeFlight's Sentry ADS-B receiver. This might be the best ads-b I think you can buy at this price! This video goes over the features, as well as my likes and dislikes. If you are looking for a new addition to your electronic flight bag, check out this review!

Well done review! :-) here is the only thing I would add.... After watching another video showing a disassembly of the unit it showed that the battery is soldered onto the board which means it's not user replaceable --- but , guaranteed, eventually any battery fails. If I'm going to pay $400 to $500 for something I want to make sure that the battery is replaceable by me and doesn't become a box of expensive junk when the battery eventually fails. So my purchase choice is going to be the sentry adsb MINI. It uses an external power source which of course I can replace at will. So in my book the adsb sentry mini is the best bet as far as function and longevity of the product.
Cool... I flew over NASA space shuttle runway once also. Unfortunately, it was on my 1st solo cross-country (KDAB-KMLB), back in the days before GPS and iPads. In spite of all the excellent training my CFI had provided, I decided that navigation was not required due to the ease of this flight. So, I folded up my sectional chart, which had been carefully annotated with checkpoints, believing that nothing could go wrong if I just kept the water on my left. As I was chillin', listening to Jimmy Buffett on the NDB receiver, I noticed the longest runway I had ever seen right below my aircraft. My heart pounded with fear as I realized I was in the restricted area and not talking to anyone. This was in early 80's just before the very first shuttle launch & the ASAP reporting program did not exist. Haha... I miss the days when you could be forgiven for dumb mistakes, just because you were and young & inexperienced. I am just getting back into light aircraft flying after decades away. Thanks for this review. I just ordered my Sentry today.
Very cool and informative! I'm just about to adopt Foreflight and noted that you can connect this Sentry unit to a wi-fi only iPad. Nice tutorial. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing! I just ordered one
Really good, succinct video. Thank you!
Great review! Concise with history. First time I’ve been to your channel, and it’s a winner.
Thank you!!
Just found your channel. Thanks for the video!
Great review, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great review. Concise and to the point. Asked by another reviewer as well, it would great to get the link to the iPad mount hardware.
Got a sub for that shuttle fly by!
Great video! Student pilot here with iPad and ForeFlight. Looking at the sentry. Was wondering how you mounted your iPad in the video or you flying over the space shuttle runway?
Hey, really appreciate your review as I'm looking to get an ads-b receiver. A bit of an side question, what size iPad do you fly with?
I also subbed to your channel.
Hahaha the link to the headset stand is hilarious
Nice job...!
Great job and testimonial. I wish you could get some credit for the unit I just purchased.
THX for your great review. I have a stratus 2S, does the sentry do traffic and weather any differently?
I think a benefit of Stratus is it can be used w multiple devices & multiple Apps -where Sentry is only for Foreflight/iPad.
Hey man I fly out of KFIN and KDAB!!
For ADHR to work with foreflight is there a calibration of the unit needed? I imagine you calibrate it after its mounted straight and level? So if you take the unit out for recharging it has to be calibrated again for attitude display to be accurate? Is it difficult to calibrate? I purposely signed up for Pro plus just to have AHRS then realized it will not show dynamic picture of terrain....I guess I need to have this Sentry unit or something similar.
Great review, thanks! What is the price?
You need more views and subs, great vid. Can I buy the wifi version of the iPad mini 5 and use this to cover gps (along with all it either features) or do you recommend the cell version if the iPad with this?
capybaras I’ve never had a cell version iPad. They cost too much :). The WiFi version works perfectly fine and you are able to use all of its features. In fact, the Sentry has pin point accuracy with GPS positioning regardless of altitude. The cell accuracy however, degrades as you climb in altitude. You can test this yourself. Next time you fly, look at your accuracy in ForeFlight using only your cell phone service on the ground, then compare that accuracy again as you are climbing. The cell version iPad is no different.
@@AeroNerd thanks. btw watched some of your other vids, good stuff
Could i possible get a link to your ipad window mount hardware? I have yoke mount but want to check out the window as well.
Can you use your iPads LTE connection while connected to Sentry?
Can it be charged of of 12v aircraft power?
Great review! Can this be used with an iPad without the cellular?
Chi Hin Chan yes
I hear you. I had to go with the stratus because it links to my heads up display and the sentry doesn’t play well with others
Links to a HUD? Nice!!
@@AeroNerd yup. The XHUD 1000 gets traffic and ADHR from the stratus 3. So I link the the stratus to my foreflight and HUD
Great review.
Do you need to be within cell range for the Sentry to work in terms of showing weather ?
The Sentry doesn't use cell towers, uses GPS and ADS-B for weather, traffic, and position
@@AeroNerd thank you
Great review! I was wondering if I should get this or not. I am a student pilot and my flight school has 152s and 172s. the 172 have the Garmin gtx350, flight stream 210, and a Garmin gtn650 so I can connect my iPad to those, but I am flying the 152 right now because it's $33 less an hour but it has no avionics whatsoever, just a radio and transponder. I was wondering if I were to buy the sentry would I be able to use foreflight for navigation even if the plane has no avionics besides the sentry? thanks!
I’ve been using this Sentry for many years in multiple aircraft. I chose the Sentry because it’s easy to use, long lasting battery, works with ForeFlight, and it’s very reliable and accurate!
do you know if it works with an aera660
Does it only work with Foreflight EFB?
Hold up, how is that not restricted airspace? Can anyone fly over the space shuttle runway? What about doing a touch and go?
Might be a dumb question but if I have a cellular ipad and this, is there anything else I need to have GPS thats shows my position in real time on Foreflight as well as weather and other traffic? My CFI would also have what I believe was some sort of wifi puck in addition to the two.
I have used both cellular and noncellular iPad. It will work fine. The Sentry gets the GPS info and sends that data to your phone or iPad via wifi. All you need to do is connect to the Sentry's wifi. Bada BING bada BOOM!
Will this work in the Caribbean?
You didn’t add the link to the ADSB
Sentry does not indicate what generation iPad/mini - it took me a while to find it on foe Flights support page...Pad 5 or higher iPad mini higher than a 2nd generation. I needed to upgrade my iPad. Works well.
Sounds expensive 😬
I needed to upgrade my iPad and the grandchildren took over my other iPad
Works with nothing but foreflight 😢
That’s why it’s cheaper than the Stratus.. BUT.. it has a carbon monoxide sensor which non of the other ADSBs have.. at least not to my knowledge.
Good thing FF is the GOAT lol
NO not worth the money.
All you're doing making them rich
Why not?
Do you know if the Sentry has API'S?
Thanks for the question, I’ll post this answer on the AeroNerd Reboot Episode 1 next week!
