- I recently discovered the PIVOT Case by FlyBoys, and I am a huge believer in the product now after using it for weeks in the cockpit. I love that it is a sturdy case that is also designed specifically for mount in the cockpit, and it can be configured many different ways (suction mount, yoke mount, kneeboard, etc.) and even with other products (ram mounts, etc.). I've been telling a lot of my pilot friends about this new case and so I wanted to do a video on it as well.

I work for a major U.S. airline. We use Pivot cases in the cockpit for our iPads. These mounts and cases get used for years (under very heavy use with planes that fly around the clock). I've never seen a problem with one. I have a 182 with a cheap mount. I think it's time to upgrade!
Awesome video. I’m continuously impressed by your production, scrips, and great aviation content. Well done Charlie!
Thanks so much! Really appreciate the feedback!
I bought one about a month ago and absolutely love it. For those of you saying it's too expensive, get a different hobby. Plus when I went to Best Buy just to get a regular case that didn't have an aviation application, they were the same price if not more.....If you decide to get over the "too expensive" you WON'T regret purchasing!
“ Get a different hobby” he says 😂 😂
Seriously aviation is a money eater!
You are costing me money Charlie!! Just ordered for my Mini 4. I have a suction and yoke mount for Ram so I ordered just the ball with mounting plate.
Love your videos!
Haha! That's awesome. Glad you enjoy the channel!! Thank you for watching!
As soon as I saw your title (while scanning RUclips vids on my iPad mini in my pivot case) I KNEW you were going to say you switched to Pivot. Like you, I spent way too much money on many systems and found the Pivot system the best for me. It is super high quality. The company makes some other pretty neat products as well for pilots. I own one of their clip boards which straps to my leg-another top quality item that blows the competition away. Yes they cost more but well worth it. Anyway I love their products too and not at all surprised at this stellar review. Good stuff.
Our company uses this PIVOT case in our B-767s. It's awesome. Rotates 90° easily.
That’s such a great introduction to the Pivot line of cases! I’ve been using the Pivot case for my 11” iPad Pro for about a year now. I was so excited about the new iPad Mini I was one of the first to preorder the new Pivot T21A case. They are absolutely worth the higher cost.
In South Texas I've had way too many incidents of iPad overheating, I haven't used a full case for years. I've had iPads overheat in a Ram Roll'r mount, and in an X-Grip mount. I've had my iPad overheat just from putting it on the seat while I close the hangar door. I changed to the X-Naut cooling mount, they are very expensive and you can't put your iPad in any kind of protective case (which is a bit scary) but it never overheats anymore. If it wasn't for the overheating issue the PIVOT would be the perfect mount. I know they say it's vented to prevent overheating, but that's a lot of money to spend to find out it will still overheat in my environment.
I have the same issue in Southern California. Flying our 182 this morning from TRM to CMA, my iPad almost overheated just sitting in my lap as the sun hit it. In many daylight conditions, I just don’t think I can hang it to the side window where it can get the direct sun on it. Very frustrating.
I use the suction monunt Ram Mount with the X-Grip. That checks all of your boxes and you can use what ever case you prefer.
I used this option with my iPad mini for the first time yesterday during my flight review. Worked better than any other mounting location I've tried so far.
Same, I am IFR rated and use the X-grip. Kind of future-proofs it too since it will accept any case/ipad mini size. I can't mount it on the side window in a PA28, the window curves and isn't flat like a Cessna.
@@matt3950 How do you mount yours in a PA28? I have the same mount and have been flying my school's Archer more often and can't use the suction mount on the curved screen. Did you end up going with a yoke mount?
Yup! Love my Pivot case. I use the lap strap while flying. But it’s versatile and it just works better than expected. Plus they sell add ons.
I used these during my T6B and T44C training. Now I’m looking to get one for my personal iPad. It’s the best mounting solution I’ve seen so far.
Starting flying again after 30 years. Love your videos so I can get up to date on technology and skills. I'm sold. Great video.
Thanks Danny. Pumped for you!! Welcome back!
I definitely love the Pivot Case. I found both the window mount and the yoke mount obscures the gauges for me. I had to rig some RAM mounts to make a 90° angle to lower the yoke mount a bit. Works great now.
To each their own. I love my yoke mount and don't see myself moving away from it, but this certainly looks like a great option!
Been using pivot mounts in the r22 with the ipad air for a few months now and it makes it so doable when mounted to the windshield. B4 pivot I'd never think to bring anything bigger than an iPad mini in the r22. But now it's awesome!
My iPad mini pivot case is the
Rare blue angles edition. It’s solid, don’t overheat (I’m in Arkansas). I have the lap version because I’m old school and am use to charts strapping to my leg. The strap works well. It rotates 360 degrees on your leg to any position you want, vertical or horizontal. (I’m in a 172)
I can't use a case down here in Louisiana in the summer as the Ipad will over heat. Once in the air OK. I have a little USB fan I use on the ramp to help cooling
Have it. Love it. I use the optional larger Ram Mount ball adapter. I first saw it on Stevo1kinevos RUclips channel
I tried a bunch of different sytems early in my training including simple kneeboard and paper. Now, as I approach my checkride for PPL I find myself centered around the Pivot system. I have the suction and yoke mounts (different sizes) since I do not own my own aircraft I wanted maximum options for mounting. I also have the Pivot thigh strap and the converter for regular kneeboards. So yeah, I may be a bit biased but it's because the quality is top-notch.
I also got the adapter that lets me use my Pivot cases with MYGOFLIGHT mounts (it's basically the MYGOFLIGHT puck attached to a Pivot head). Why? Well, I have a MYGOFLIGHT thigh strap that lets me angle the iPad upward which is great when I'm doing safety pilot or backseat observer roles.
I carry both a 5th Gen iPad Mini and a newer IPad Pro 11"--I have Pivot cases for both and with all the mounts I have a range of options with which to mount the iPads depending on my mission. One of the most versatile systems out there.
It's worth noting that some Pivot cases have an optional additional security kit that complies with government standards for covering the camera and nullifying the headset/microphone for us government (or tinfoil-hat-wearing) types.
None of this is cheap, so if you want cheap, move along. :)
Also, for those of us still training, make sure to keep a regular kneeboard with your sectional and E6B stashed close by. DPEs love to disqualify iPads, so keep the old-school kneeboard (and practice using it!) until you are a fully certified pilot. :)
And I wish you'd had that affiliate code a few months back, I'd made you a few scheckles. :)
I started my PPL training around the time you started your channel, now I'm almost ready for the checkride. Keep the good content coming!
I am an instrument trainee. I use an iPad mini - 5 with a kneeboard mount that I'm looking to replace with a yoke mount. I've heard from other sources that cruel DPEs would disqualify the iPad and that is totally BS of them to do that. Why not disqualify the headset too, and make the checkride applicant use the little cockpit microphone and try to hear ATC from the cabin speaker? Headsets and EFBs are for safety, not convenience. Any suggestions on what I can tell my future DPE in advance to prevent such inconsiderateness? Recently I asked somebody this and the reply was: When the DPE takes your iPad away, pull out your first of two backup iPads from your flight bag.
@@JustSayN2O As for the DPE, I carry two iPads and he disqualified both. :/ He explained later what he wanted to see me do (PPL checkride: use a Navlog and annotate differences as I fly). I was able to use my iPad again as we returned to the airport for landings as he expected me to look up taxi diagrams (which I did). YMMV.
I think if I'd just had an editable navlog on my iPad and was taking notes via Apple pencil *and* had a backup iPad do to the same with, he would've been fine. I think the *dependance* on the EFB doing the mental math and whatnot was his trigger.
Just took my first solo and used my new pivot suction mount and case ! Awesome ! Thank you so much for the shout out and yes! I used the discount code!
I've been back and forth like you, but went back to yoke mount after a couple flights above 8000' (starting at 800'). Suction cups (Ram) failed at altitude when the air got thinner and the whole system fell onto my lap and down to my feet. I feel much safer with it physically attached to the yoke. I stuck my phone though on the suction mount and it seems to stay in place, probably because it's lighter.
It would be nice if the suction mount that Nflightcam uses could be used for iPad mounts. The one Nflightcam uses, you can reapply suction because it has a suction pump. So no matter what height you're at, it will stay attached to the window.
I really appreciate the hard work that went into producing this video, even though it’s so niche and probably won’t see millions of views
Thanks Collin. Glad it was helpful!
So I am honestly intrigued with this product. I think it will be great for both my iPad Pro and mini. I bought the mini for flying. The iPad Pro for everything else. It does use a keyboard. I think this product is perfect for all and look forward to trying it out.
Thank you. Very informative and mounts are a hot topic of frequent discussion in my aviation circles.
I won hundred percent agree this company has the best solutions.
I use mine with a kneeboard and the entire ecosystem that they sell is compatible. In the future I may have a second iPad mounted to the windscreen.
Even After a Year of posting this video, the claim code still worked . Thank you !
I THINK what you are talking about is the ram mount on top of the yoke cushion. For that I detached the cushion on my 172n, not hard it was just glued on. The mount then goes directly on the yoke and I can pull all the way back without removing the mount. It also matters what kind of ipad and what aspect. I use a 7 inch ipad in portrait. This is the closest to the size of a plate, and mounted as you would if you clipped a plate to the yoke.
Pivot case is amazing. Using it in military flying applications. The new Mini 6 case is great too
I have 2 PIVOT cases…iPad and iPad Mini (the new one). I love both of them. I’ve had my regular iPad PIVOT case for over a year and it has about 250 flight hours on it. I use the kneeboard and yoke mounts in a 182.
I'm finally thinking about upgrading to an iPad EFB. So thanks for the recommendation!
Been using the Pivot case and mounts from Flyboys for over a year now and love it. Mine is Pink, because it was half price!!!
This was the best review on this topic I've seen! Well done, just purchased a case, screen protector and mount based on your work. Appreciate that!
Thanks so much for the kind words! Glad you found it helpful!
Thanks for recommendation! Picked up one with your code and flew with it yesterday...so much nicer getting that iPad off my leg! Thank you sir!
I love my Pivot case and mount. I currently use it with a yoke mount, but I'm thinking about switching to a suction cup mount in the window. Thankfully their mounts are all RAM mounts anyways, so its pretty interchangeable.
I'm sure the Pivot is very nice and I've even seen Steveo1kinevo using it, but what stopped me was the outrageous cost, $200+. I have a nice Ram mount with a solid Otterbox case on my Ipad mini and it works just fine, less than $100.
Huge Pivot fan! I am on my 2nd one for the new iPad Pro and have one on pre-order for the new iPad mini pro, can't wait to start flying with the mini, the full size pro is a little too big. I do have a RAM yoke mount that has the Pivot connector on it and I like it, once I get the mini I will give the suction cup a try.
I went through this same discovery that you did. Glad you documented it.
Great video. I was just wondering this week why Ram didn't make a case that directly mounts to the arm. Just ordered one these from FlyBoys! I also like the attention to detail they put into their little security/protection kit for the Ipad. Thank you.
Just got mine. Very easy to adjust and very durable. Thanks for the recommendation.
Awesome!! Glad you like it!
I also operate a Cessna 182 and have no problem using the yoke mount with my new Mini. Blocking my window (side view) is not for me.
I tried a bunch of iPad mounts. I also ended up landing on the PIVOT cases and mounts about two years ago. Perfect for full size iPads and minis, and the cases on their own are fantastic. For ForeFlight on my phone in the supercub, I use quad lock.
I use a adjustable spring loaded mount, sturdy, and doesn’t block me view when I mount it on the yoke, and works will all cases. I’ve been using it for a year now and the spring feels as strong as new, and it was only $40 on Amazon
That's a bargain!! Have you got a link? Would love to check it out! Thanks!
Yes, please post a link, thank you!
They are superb. I’ve been using one with a knee mount for a year.
Nice!! Have you ever experienced any issues with suction mount on window coming loose due to temperature changes?
Good question - I have had the RAM suction mount fall off only a handful of times, but this could either be due to wear (have had it for years), dirty windscreen which makes an imperfect seal on the suction cup, or user error and not suctioning it down tightly enough. But honestly it's only happened a single digit number of times over the years, so I'm not blaming RAM for that. It was more so the case compatibility with the Pivot Case that got me jazzed up about switching. In general I've found suction mounts (RAM, Pivot, etc.) to be really sturdy, even in turbulence.
Hi Mike, generally speaking, when used properly, our suction cups don't experience issues with detachment due to temperature changes that you may experience with other locking suction cups on the market. That's due to the design of the locking mechanism itself. The locking mechanism on our suction cups more effectively expresses all of the air out of the suction cup, which prevents getting an air bubble trapped in the suction cup that can expand or contract with heat and cold.
Thanks for this reply! Super helpful
There are several aviation channels that get episodes sponsored by Pivot, but none of them have ever explained the product like you just did. I usually feel sorry for Pivot because they normally just mention the company name and point to their device and roll right into the content. You were on point, direct, quick and firm with a good knowledge of the product and it didn't turn into a sappy music video. 👍
Thanks so much! Really appreciate that.
Wow charlie, thats cool!! Thanks for the PIREP! I think this is just what I am looking for. You are so right when you say how cruicial the IPAD is to the flight. I would hate to be 4 states away from home and have it bounce off the tarmac. I went to the site but I cant find the ball mount that is ram compatible.
I agree... looking back on it, I regret just not using a case for my iPad. That was dumb. There are mounts that probably work with cases but I just really like that this is all purposefully designed to go together. Really neat solution. Here is the ball mount adapter that I mentioned for RAM: flyboys.com/products/pivot-ppk-to-1-5-ram-adapter
Thanks for the review. I ordered one for my 2021 6th Gen iPAD Mini, and it's still on pre-order.
This was a fantastic video! Thank you. My case (Titan Series for the 6th generation mini) and suction mount are on the way. I can't wait to try them out.
Flew with the new pivot for the first time today. I love it!
Awesome!! Glad it went well!
I use a ram x grip iPad mini mount. I have both suction cup and yoke claw. I too prefer the window mount and can easily in a Cessna.
In the Archer it covers my standby panel so I have to deal with a yoke mount and loss of viz of the soft keys on the pfd..
I can still see them I just need to move my body slightly each time. Luckily hey aren’t needed often.
I love my pivot case. Started using it without mounts. Finally bought their yoke mount for same reasons you described. It was blocking one of the G5’s. I was pretty bummed but plan to go for suction mount next.
I use one of these at work. Great gizmo. Just got another for my not work plane. Thanks for the code!
Just pre-ordered the Pivot T21A case for iPad 6Mini. Looking sooo forward to it!
Awesome! Let me know what you think!
I like their gear but in the summer here it regularly gets to 95+ degrees with many days over 100. I have no choice but to use the X-naut fan case to keep my iPad alive.
AWESOME CASE That's what I own
Been using flyboys kneeboard for dead reckoning and found the quality good. Might try flyboys for the iPad as well.
There is no good place unless you have room on your panel . Windshield mounts keep you from seeing traffic.
Nice, but... if you fly in hot weather and have experienced an iPad overheat shutdown then the ram mount can be modified with a hole saw for cooling.
Hey Charlie. Awesome review. Will be getting one for my iPad 11 pro
Great product review, Charlie - thanks so much.
I'm in Texas and it's 102+ these days. I am reading a few replies about potential overheating. I would really love your professional recommendation regarding over heating. I see mountainous terrain in your videos so maybe you are luckier than me.
I also have a problem with glare when using the iPad mini as my kneeboard. I use a glare screen but...not seeing any improvement.
Maybe a solution is to move to a better climate - ha.
Thanks in advance for your (and any fellow Texans) reply/suggestions.
Thanks Molly. I'm based in TX too. Knock on wood, I've never had the iPad overheat on me in the cockpit but I have a high wing airplane which occasionally provides shade, and if it's REALLY hot and the ipad is in perpetual sunlight I'll actually take it out of the mount during cruise and get it out of the sun so that it can cool off. I think there are some mounts out there that actually provide internal fans and things but I have not personally used them. The strategies above have worked for me so far. Just have to be cognizant of it.
What about iPad overheating? My iPad would ALWAYS overheat until I found a case with cooling fans. I wouldn’t consider any case that doesn’t have an integrated iPad cooling system.
Thank you for this video. I just used your link and ordered it. Your video was convincing.
Sure thing! Glad you found it helpful!
Just got one recently. Works great.
I’m at Sulphur Springs. Seeing it on the map and seeing you turning for final in that video. I’m working on my PPL yet. Hoping to check ride soon.
Awesome!! Let me know how everything goes!
I took your advice and ordered one today. Based on your review & video, I'm sure it'll meet my intent. Thanks
I love watching your passion in these videos! Continue to be encouraged and allow Him to use you more and more!
In terms of the mount, has this new case/mount helped with any overheating issues?
From the website:
Superior Cooling Design: The 10X helps prevent device overheat using a passive chimney effect to draw in cooler air while venting warmer air using thermal vents that are 20% larger than to previous designs.
Also, I have made my purchase. Thank you Charlie!
Thank you! That is a good question on overheating. I have not been able to test it in the Texas summer yet, but I would imagine that it would help. Previously I wasn't using a case and so in cruise the iPad could really bake if it was in direct sunlight and so I would have to periodically take it off the mount to make sure it didn't overheat. Having a case on it should insulate it a bit from the direct sunlight and slow down the warming process I think. We'll find out. But either way, the biggest thing I like is that I now have a really sturdy case for my iPad and don't have to worry about fumbling it around the airplane and cracking the screen, and it really easily snaps onto the mount that I leave in the plane. Really neat solution.
Awesome! Hope you like it, Aaron!
Hope they could release a kind of cooling fan attachment for the case, my ipad mini6 was overheated several times in summer. Other than that it is a great system.
$150 for the case? Wow, They sure are proud of their plastic!
Charlie, what about cooling? We all have experienced overheating issues with our ipads.
During long cross country legs in the Texas Summer, if the ipad is in direct sunlight the whole time I'll move it out of the sun during less busy portions of the flight just proactively. I haven't had it actually overheat on me yet, and I've really only been concerned about it in the middle of the summer.
LOL, good video but I had laugh when you referred to "bringing the yoke back on landing", you showed an airplane landing that has a stick 🙂
Been looking at these cases for a while however, I’m sticking with the ram mount, because pivot is unreasonably expensive.
I'm assuming the suction cup never falls off and be totally trusted during flight? Also, do you find it is plenty out of the way of seeing necessary instruments on the panel?
Just ordered a pivot case and mount and used the Charlie code. Thanks for the info.
there are several cases now. was this review about the pivot mini specifically?
PIVOT T21A Titan Series - Fits iPad Mini (6th gen.) ??? thoughts??
Just ordered mine...was ordering other items anyway...perfect timing for the discount :o)
Nice!! :)
Great information sir will give it a try.
I am surprised that I cannot see a "bolt on" flyboy mount on their web page for fixing permanently to the aircraft. This is quite common for experimental aircraft where you want the mount to stay in the aircraft, not obscure the view (so not stuck on the windows) and not fall off if attached to a painted surface, which the suction mounts may do. I have a Europa monowheel which I am finishing-up now and want to bolt the mount through the panel before I finally fit the panel into place. A suction mount will likely fall off with the non-reflective matt paint I have used and I am not keen on gluing a large suction mount on. Am I missing something ? I like the easy "clip on, clip off" feature" but I just cannot see a permanent fixture mount on their site.
Just did the same! The RAM Mounting Plate is not really compatible with screen protection and the stress on the iPad was really high...unfortunately getting a PIVOT Case here in Europe is kinda hard. Mine is still in the bag of a friendly aviator :D
If there was an option to add cooling fans. It would be perfect. If my X-Naut cooling mount featured a protective case that stayed on the iPad when carried separately, it would be perfect.
That’s the mount we use at United
Do you have any issues with overheating?
Where in Idaho are you located…we’re up at COE
I looks great but will it overheat. I live in CA and we have temps in the 90 to 100's.
How do you navigate around the iPad blocking some of the left instruments? I fly Cessnas and Piper warrior/cherokees and in the Piper's in particular, the mount tends to block the left side of the panel..
In my 182, where I have it mounted doesn't block any instruments. That it probably harder in the Pipers. You might have to consider a yoke mount in that instance. I put together a video comparing those different locations here: ruclips.net/video/uwOP-cpyDQc/видео.html
hope it helps!
Looks great, can you get it with w yoke mount
I’m thinking about purchasing the pivot case. Any issues with overheating?
Will the ipad overheat and does it block the air speed indicator. I am flying a C-172. Does it block your vision out the side window.
That looks great. I'm not in the market at this stage as I need to stick with paper for my CPL cross countries and flight test. Just wondering if they have any products compactable with any android products as I'm definitely not an apple fan.
Thanks, Charlie. Just curious if any readers use this with a Cherokee 140?
Do they make a waterproof case for use on boats?
I looked at these but for me it's a no-go because of price. $230 for the case + mount + shell before tax & shipping? That's a bit rich, even for aviation.
I only paid $168 for my IPad Mini 4 128GB w/Cell connection in 2019. Still in its original box.
I bought a second one as a backup with 64GB for $100. I always travel with both iPads. The primary one has all of the latest & greatest software on it. The backup one is intentionally kept a version or two behind just in case a software glitch takes out the Primary.
Redundant iPads or a rugged case. I'll take the former.
Sadly, they have been sold out of the Ram adapter since you posted this. I'll buy a case once they get their shot together and stock the parts so I can use it on my existing Ram mount.
You should call 'em and tell 'em they costing you (and them) money by not having the items in stock.
Always love your videos. What is your preferred iPad these days?
thanks! I just put out a video about it last week. I just updated to the iPad Mini 6.
Quick question for you? Do you use suction mount versus yoke mount? Also are you using iPad mini and I assume your flying 172. What are your preference suction over yoke. Great review sir.
Thanks Kelly - I cover those questions in this video: ruclips.net/video/Mrx7RAlEbQE/видео.html
I’m glad I came across this video. I hadn’t heard about the PIVOT cases before. Just pre ordered the iPad Mini 6 case. Can’t wait to get it. Do you use a single or double suction cup mount?
Awesome! I think you'll really like it. I use the single suction cup mount. I don't believe they offer a double?
The single suction cup mount is more than adequate for most pilots. We generally recommend the double suction cup mount to customers who fly helicopters due to the high levels of vibration inherent in certain phases of flight.
Which mount are you using in your 172? The company have two that are similar and I cannot tell the difference. Thought I would just ask to make sure I get the correct one. Thanks.
I just updated it, I talk about it in this video: ruclips.net/video/F-5RyHs6rX8/видео.html
Is the one shown in the video the regular or the shorty version?
Regular I believe
Which ipad do you use in the cockpit? I'm looking at getting an iPad and some input on screen size would be appreciated!
Hi Charlie…great video…. Do you have any issues with overheating because of its location to the windscreen especially in summer… our summers are pretty hot here. I currently use a mount that the iPad clips into and it has two fans.
Hi there - it's a good question. I haven't been able to test the pivot mount in the Texas summer yet, but I would occasionally run into that issue with my RAM mount, though I don't know if the mount was to blame. Pivot does have some statements on their website about their cooling technology so I do know they're trying to address that. However, all of that aside, I would only have heat issues when it was in direct sunlight for prolonged periods. It never actually overheated to the point where it shut down, but if the angle of the sun was just right and the ipad didn't have shade, occasionally en route I would take it off the mount and put it in the shade on the copilot's seat and point the air vent towards it. I never found out if that was actually necessary or not, it just felt precautionary on my end. But like I said it was only in certain situations when the angle of the light and duration were just right.
Any idea when the case and mount for the new iPad mini will be out?
They've currently got it on pre-order. You can also reach the company at sales@flyboys.com and 1-888-435-9269. They're real people so they should be able to get back to you!
