  • Bake bread in the slow cooker! Now you can make no knead bread without a dutch oven and heating up your kitchen. Our slow cooker no knead bread recipe makes for an easy bread recipe. For this video, we are using our Oatmeal Whole Wheat Bread Recipe, but the method will work for any no knead bread recipe.
    The baking time will vary depending on your slow cooker. In my crock pot, its 1 hour and 20 minutes to bake bread. Its best to use a digital thermometer to be sure its fully baked. For me, about 200F is when the bread is baked.
    Here are some good digital thermometers: amzn.to/1GITNND

    He made a valuable comment about using filtered water. I notice everything I make in the slow cooker is different, including beans, lentils, rice, they are different with a jug of filtered water.

    I watched another video where a woman from Eastern Europe draped a cloth over the top of the pot (on the stove BTW) and then put the regular lid on to capture some of the steam rising up and keep it from dripping down on the bread. I've been looking everywhere for a way to make bread off grid that wouldn't take too many watts. Thank you so much for showing us this. I think I've looked at every possible way to bake decent bread including wood stove, propane, butane, and alcohol stove ovens, microwave, convection oven, toaster oven, those infrared cookers in the glass bowl thing, pressure cooker and instant pot (you need the one that has the bake feature) but never thought about a slow cooker. Guess this will be my project for the day. Thank you so much for this video.

    Whole wheat bread in Taiwan is expensive and it is hard to find whole wheat flour, but I found a bag at Carrefour and started this adventure with my crockpot slow cooker. First loaf did not rise much, so I boiled 2 cups of water in my microwave and put the batch in and it rose about an hour later! Then I went to bed and it rose again and I baked it for 1.30 minutes and checked the inside (over 200), but when it cooled it was not ready at the bottom, so I cooked it for another 15 minutes and it was fine. My husband ate half the loaf before I knew what was happening. thank you for the recipe! I can make three more loaves before I run out of wheat flour. Cheers! American in Taiwan, which is not locked down because only 7 deaths and 527 cases since Jan 27th-October 11th. Everyone wears masks on public transport and public venues and you must be checked for fever before entering a building, including restaurants. We have daily reports from CDC for guidance. In the newspaper it shows where people who were positive went before they were tested. If you feel sick and were in those locations, you are instructed to call a number. Happy baking folks!

    I was given an old bread machine with a missing paddle, so I mix the dough by hand and let it rise and cook the bread. it would not cook part of the top until I put a towel over the glass top to reduce heat loss. you may find that the cook time is faster if you put a towel over the glass cover.
    best

    Nice info, but what you have there is a crock pot. One can read it right on the appliance. A crock pot provides more heat, both on the bottom and on the sides. (BTW, I have been making good bread with city water for years.)

    Crockpots come in different sizes and wattages. What wattage was yours when you made this bread? I have 3 crockpots of different sizes and the wattages, on high, range from 92 (smallest pot) to 250 watts for the 6 quart model. Which one gets chosen determines how long it will take and whether or not you get any browning.

    Different slow cooker works differently for no knead bread. Mine cooks about two hours before it is done.

    Distilled or RO water would work. Not all counter-top filters remove all of the chlorine. That bread looks tasty, time to whip out the crockpot.

      Balconygarden good to know about the water in the no knead bread. the slow cooker works great for this, eric

    Oh my gosh, I never realized that tap water would have such detrimental effects on the PROCESS itself!
    We have an RO system but, honestly, for bread I often use tap water (to get warm water) because the spout for our filtered water doesn't have a temperature control.
    I'm going to have to be diligent about using the filtered water and look for improvements.

      vegangelist i learned this recently from reading about the Tartine Bread Starter, it made a big difference. thx! eric.

    Very nice can you make this bread in a solar cooker ?, I have tried other bread recipes that worked half way good.

      Jamie Grand have not thought of using a solar oven, i'll have to check into that, thx! eric.

    Eric, love this recipe, tho I haven't tried baking in the crockpot. Will have to try that this weekend. Homemade bread is my favorite thing to make- especially the more rustic loaves. Just wondering if you've done anything with sour dough? I'm keeping two crocks going at the moment- such fun to work with.

      +Sharon McKissick i have managed to kill sourdough starters several times, I have to get more from my neighbor. the slow cooker works fine for baking bread, though the crust isn't as toasted. you can slide the loaf under the broiler for a minute to achieve that after the slow cooker phase. thx, eric.

    May I ask you no water in crock pot? It will not brake? Can I turn it upside down in crock pot because in my truck I don't have a oven. Thank you in advance

    You could probably add a tablespoon of water, to steam the bread.

    Eric, you mentioned some trade offs with making the bread in a crock pot. I might have missed it, if you did :)

    • @gardenfork
      @gardenfork  9 лет назад +1

      Jamie Kernc with the slow cooker, you don't get the nice crust and browning you will get with a hot oven. thx! eric.

    I thought I asked a question about the size of the crock pot but don't see it. I have a 2 1/2 is that big enough or should it be bigger. I also have some white whole wheat flour left from my last disastrous try at baking whole wheat bread. Can I use it?

    • @gardenfork
      @gardenfork  9 лет назад

      Danny McCarter Hi Danny, is it a 2 1/2 quart slow cooker? i'd try it and see. you can use up to about 1/3 whole wheat, so go ahead! eric.

    First, let me say, I love your videos and look forward to watching all. Do you pre-heat your crockpot on high before you cook the bread?

    • @gardenfork
      @gardenfork  8 лет назад +1

      +Cathy Holm I don't, but if you do, it will shorten the baking time. since slow cookers can be very different with their heating abilities, i'd pay close attention the first time. thx!

    I have a ricecooker (two settings: Warm and Cook) which looks very similar to your slow cooker. You think a bread can be done in one of those ?

    • @gardenfork
      @gardenfork  9 лет назад

      sandertel most rice cookers turn off automatically, so not sure if this would work. i'd try it and see. thx, eric.

      I most likely need to take a screwdriver, open the thing up and create a fire hazard in which I hot wire the thing to prevent it from switching back to WARM... ;-)
