Hello and welcome back to In the Kitchen with Matt, I am your host Matt Taylor, today I got an excited little episode for you, I am going to show you how to bake bread in a crock pot, what? Yes a crockpot. Let’s get started. All right first we need our bread dough, I have a couple of loaves here ready to go, here is a short little video on how to make the bread dough. All right I let these rise a second time, and now they are ready to be baked. This one I am going to bake in the oven traditionally for 25 to 30 minutes, at 350 degrees F. And this one we are going to bake in a crockpot, and then we are going to compare the two. So what you do is you get yourself a large Crock Pot, and if you don’t have a large crockpot, what you can do is, put parchment paper in there, and then just put your dough right in there, so it will resemble, it will resemble one of the round loaves, as opposed to the sandwich loaf. All right then we just put our dough right in there like that, ready to go, then we turn it on high, we put the top on and then we let it bake for 2.5 to 3 hours. Until it is nice and golden brown on top, all right time is up, let’s go ahead and take a look, ha ha, look at that. Bread cooked in the crock pot. All right now with oven mitts I am going to go ahead and come in here, grab my bread, all right I am going to go ahead and take this loaf out of the bread pan here. All right and then I am going to point out some differences right away, so the side there got more crispy or more hard on the sides, this is the one that was in the crockpot, this is the one that was baked normally in the oven, a little bit browner on the edges here, nice little crust, a little bit softer, pretty cool, now look at the tops, as you might expect this one looks like a normal loaf of bread, this one got these little ridges, what you might expect from the steam inside of the crock pot cooking the top. Now let’s cut into them and see what we can see. First let’s start with our normal loaf, take my bread knife here and I am just going to cut the end, look at the inside, it looks really good, it looks like you know how bread should look. Give this a little taste, mmm, now let’s take our crockpot bread, same ingredients and everything, same dough, cut off the end here, a little crispier on the edges, and a little bit different texture on the inside, a little bit more brown, here is the difference, I probably could have cooked this a little bit less time, that’s pretty cool thought the difference. Let’s give it a taste, taste really good the outside crust is nice and hard the inside is really soft, really cool. All right our crock pot bread is done, it turned out amazing, now there are some differences as I showed you, between this loaf and the loaf that was baked traditionally, in the oven, the crockpot loaf has more crispy or crunchy edges around it, and it turned out the color was just a bit different then the other one, but it still tastes really good, so there you go, if you don’t have an oven, or your oven is not working, make your bread in a crockpot. It is really easy to do, if I can do it you can do it. - Хобби
I live in a low income apartment, my oven hasn’t worked for 4 months. Now under quarantine it won’t get fixed for a while. Thanks to your video, I can bake bread! I’m so excited to get baking!!
You are welcome! Let me know how it turns out. :)
why doesnt the landlord fix it? withhold your rent until it gets fixed.
thank you this is perfect I live in a motel with my 3 kids with no kitchen surviving off of a griddle a Crock-Pot and a coffee pot , and I didn't know there's so many good Crock-Pot ideas out there I'm glad I have one :-)
Yeah it is pretty interesting for sure baking bread in a Crock-Pot. It will turn out a bit different then in an oven, but it still works!! :)
Good for you!
Bravo to you for making it all work, even with limited conditions. God bless.
A crock pot,a rice cooker an a little electric pot and u good to go .even better now.a instant pot and nothing more
Wow, two and a half years later, this really helps. We'r stuck at home with the kids because of the Corona Virus @ home self-isolation. Bread is really a great family friendly task. So a BIG THANK YOU from Ottawa, Canada.
So glad it was helpful! :) Let me know how it turns out if you try it out. Good luck and stay healthy and safe! :) :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt - We will try it tomorrow or Friday, but I will definitely let you know how it goes. My daughter rules the kitchen this week, so my wife and I will place an order for permission to use the kitchen....... teenagers, what can you do:)

@@alexafly4866 Let me know how it turns out. :)
Thank you! I never would have guessed that we could make bread in a Crock-Pot.
You are so very welcome! Yeah it is fun to be able to do it. I still prefer to do it in the oven, but so cool to be able to do it in the Crock-Pot.
Yours is the first comparison I've seen and its an important one. Thank you.
You are very welcome, Virginia!
I really like that you point out that you can use AP flour. I watched a comparison video between bread flour and AP and they showed there's little difference in the results, but most hardcore breadmakers won't admit that.
Thanks! Yeah I used both all the time. Not a ton of difference, just slightly different. Plus bread flour is more expensive.
Update: I made my flaxseed bread without sugar or oil last night in my crockpot and put water on the bottom of the crockpot and cooked it for 2.5 hours and the texture and taste was amazing. Taste like cake. I drizzled butter and honey on the top. The only prob was it wasn't brown at all on any sides, but was thinking nxt time I could use a creme Brule torch to give it a little color. But taste was omg amazing. Thank you again.
That is awesome! :) And you are very welcome!
Toaster ovens are excellent for browning/crisping but need to watched like a hawk. Intense dry heat in such a small space can easily burn foods. I can't tell you how often I've set tortilla chips ablaze !
Great, great, great idea!!! 👍
Especially right now. The lady @ Walmart got a really good laugh @ me when I hugged the bread I actually found there. Now, I can make my own in the Crockpot! I really am super excited!
Thank you, Tracy!! :) Let me know how it turns out once you try this method. :)
I like crispy bread. I also noticed there are more air pockets in the crock pot bread possibly due to the fact that the dough had more time to expand. This is definitely the best way to make bread.
Crispy bread is awesome! :) Especially smothered with butter haha
This is the 1st time I've seen one of your videos @ i want to thank you for several things. You were direct,to the point, gave clear, simple instructions @ measurements. The bread turned out beautiful @ i cant wait to try it!! Thank you very much!! I'm going to check @ see if you offer a recipe for biscotti...i absolutely adore that stuff @ for some reason I just can't get it to turn it right for me.... Anyway, thank you so much!!!!!!😊😊
Glad you found this video and my channel! Sorry, I don't have a recipe for biscotti. And you are very welcome!
Self-quarantined, looking for things to, and along comes Matt. Sir, you have opened a new vista for us. I swear, it never occured to me to try bread in the crock pot! Thanks a million!
You are welcome, Robert! At the very least it is a fun experiment to try. :) And then you know if the oven ever goes out, you have an alternative.
You can bake a cake in there, too!
That looks good, the crust is my favorite part!
Thanks! :)
Hi Matt: It's me again, just wanted to let you know the bread turned out really good it was delicious. I will definitely be making it again soon. I loved it. Thanks again!
That is so great Kathleen!! I am happy it turned out well for you! :) Thanks for letting me know!
I have been contemplating getting a crockpot for awhile now and watching this video has cemented my mind ❤🇬🇧🇯🇲
Awesome! There are so many things that you can make in a crockpot!
Matt that's great. My oven just stopped working. I want bread, fresh bread. So thankful you put this video out

This would be a great option, especially if your oven is broken or it is summer and you don't want to heat up the kitchen!

OMG - bought smallish slow cooker that has a crock pot inner; haven't used the cooker yet - BUT your recipe for using it to make bread is wonderful. What a joy to be able to make bread at home. Thank you - I've subscribed to your you tube😃
You are welcome! that is awesome. :)
I've made it, with the parchment paper and it is good. A little different than the usual, but great if you want bread that you don't have to watch so closely.
Agreed! Different than the usual, but still good and it is always nice to have another way to make bread. haha :)
Thank you, this is helpful!
You are very welcome!
When I was in service, there were 3 appliances I bought. An electric skillet, a crockpot and a percolator coffee pot.Living in the barracks, there were no stoves or ovens and after awhile one got tired of eating at the chow hall, I'd go to the BX and get some food for home cooking. I used to "bake" my pizzas on a cookie sheet inside the electric skillet. I never thought about "baking" in the crockpot, but this appears very doable.
That is a great example of when something like this would come in handy! And thank you for your service Greg!
I will be trying this .
Great! Let me know how it turns out. :)
Would have never thought about a crock pot! Awesome Matt. Thanks for sharing :)
Thank you and you are very welcome!! :)
Wow thank you🌷💕

I would suggest place a towel over the crock pot before placing the lid on top. This will make for a softer bread.
Good tip!
Cool Idea , I did not know you could make bread in a crock pot. Thanks for sharing
Thank you! And you are welcome. Not something I do all the time, but fun knowing that it can be done, if my oven ever goes out. But definitely great for people how may be limited on space and may not own an oven.
Must try
Yes! Try it out sometime and see if you like it.
crock bread seems much better well-learned something new Thanks
it is an interesting way to make bread for sure. :) You are welcome!
Good video. I was impressed!

Coronavirus brought me here! Thank you! Can’t wait to make this tomorrow. 🥰
Let me know how it turns out, Ginger! :)
When cooking bread or cake in a crock pot, two sheets of good paper towel can be placed over the top before putting the lid down. Let the papers be held in place by the weight of the lid and NOT touching the food. Shorter time. It works nice too. If you can find different size containers to use in the crock pot that is good too. We used to use a small metal coffee can inside a rounder and taller crock pot and it was good. Made good carrot cake in it.
Cool idea. So I am guessing you use the paper towel to absorb the steam? Other then that I don't really see the reason to use paper towel.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Yes, that is correct. I have even used a clean kitchen towel.
@@MiddleEastMilli :)
If you score the top of the dough and lay a dish towel Across the top of the croc just under the lid it will help to create a Dryer Air bake. I also make an awesome monkey bread that I got off of the kin more RUclips channel. It's unbelievably awesome and easy
Cool tips! Yeah I score my bread some times. Especially with my soda bread.

I'm so excited as my condo does not have an oven. I think I would do less time as I don't like my bread too crispy. But definitely going to try.

I have no space for kneading bread dough. I might use frozen bread dough from the grocery store. Worth a try anyway.👍
Worth a try for sure! :)
When searching for a 'topic' I look for the shortest video on the topic. This video is in my recipe 'folder' because, the video demo is easy to understand,, and it is short, with the recipe link provided in the description. . Thanks.
Awesome, glad you found the video helpful! You are welcome!
Amazing. Thank you. AF the bread slices or AF for top.
Thank you and you are very welcome!
Thank you for sharing! The oven loaf looks tastier and more like a loaf of bread should look. I would eat the crockpot loaf too but maybe use it for grilled cheese sandwiches or something of that nature. Making croutons out of the crockpot bread would be great too!
It is possible that someone lives in a small flat and doesn't have an oven, just a microwave and a hot plate, in that case the crockpot bread could come in handy. I have also had some loaves turn out a little more presentable then the one in the video.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Some people recommend putting some paper towels over the top, then putting the lid on (soaks up extra moisture) but don't know how that would work with your "dough in tin" method.
@@Kayenne54 Yeah you could use a tea towel too. Others actually add water to the bottom, which helps steam it.
Merci
You are very welcome! :)
that was really interesting. I thought you had to put some liquid in the crock pot, but you just inserted your bread in the pan straight on "high" - and I am amazed that the inner stoneware pot did not crack or break! Wow! You sure taught me something - thank you!!! :-)
hehehe yeah it is pretty great. I won't do it that way a lot, mainly because my oven works, but for those people who don't have an oven, but may have a crockpot, they can still make bread. :) :) You are very welcome! And you could put a bit of water in it if you wanted too.
I plan on baking a no-knead bread in my small crock pot. Here is a tip ; Put a paper towel just under the lid. That
way the steam won't fall back onto the dough. Thanks for the idea of crock pot bread!
Cool that is a cool tip! :)
Thanks for the tip & another when the baking chicken in a crock pot put a plastic bag under the lid that way the chicken will cook in the steam & be very
moised &suculant

Woo hoo I can still have homemade bread, even when its over 110 degrees outside, .i kive in tge central sanjouquin valley,ca.
Awesome! :)
I have to admit that I liked the look of the oven baked one rather than the crock pot one; however, they both turned out well. Baking bread in a Halogen Oven is also great, and turns out just as it would in a conventional oven. :)
Agreed!! I like the look bread in a traditional oven, but if for some reason someone lives in a small flat or something, and they don't have an oven, and only a microwave and hotplate and crockpot, they can still make bread! :) haha
In più l'alveolatura del pane cotto nella crock-pot era decisamente più bella
could reduce the brown bottom in the crock pot by raising the pan up a little. Some people use oven save small plates. I use canning rings.
Definitely! also a small wire rack would work too, like that kind that are for air fryers.
I actually prefer a crispier crust. Thanks I'm going to try this for sure.
You are welcome Rick! Yeah give it a try and let me know what you think. :)
You have to pour some water before placing the bread dough on it..
Then u. Will. Get some soft bread
Yep it is a good idea to put a bit of water in the bottom.
Rub butter on the sides after you take it out of the pan. Will soften it up.
Yes butter is amazing! :)
Very nice, I am surprised that it actually browns in the crock pot. Thanks for the tips.
Thank you! Yeah it is pretty cool right?
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Yes, it really is. Thank you
@@Latindyva You are welcome! :)
Can't wait to try this as our oven just broke! Should we heat the crockpot up before putting the bread in, or put the bread in and turn it to high?
Sorry to hear you oven broke, Dana! Just put the dough in, after you let it rise once, and then shape it and put it in the bread pan. No need to really do that second rise that I show in the video, since if you put it in the crock pot at room temp, it will have some additional rising time while the crock pot heats up. If that makes sense? Let me know how it turns out. You can also put a little bit of water on the bottom of the crockpot if you are using a bread pan for the dough.
No Matt, if *I* can do it.... you can do it.... coz between you and me, you’re the pro one, lol. Will give it a try soon and update you with the result! 😊
hahaha thank you Selma! :) Yes please let me know how it turns out. :)
You might try putting 3 large metal washers in bottom under the bread pan to help keep it from getting as brown and crunchy on bottom and sides.
Yep a rise of sorts is a great idea. :)
Omgoodness 🤗 no oven for a few months and have such a craving for banana bread.. Going to experiment a few different things to bake 💚💚
Yes! Experimentation is awesome in the kitchen. No oven you say? if you have the budget Air Fryers are awesome, and you can bake in them. Check out my recent videos, I have three relating to the air fryer. :)
In The Kitchen With Matt I will check them out 🤗 thank you

Nice 🌹🙏
Thank you! :)
Cooking it less time and adding a little water in the bottom of the crock pot while it bakes makes it moist inside & crispy outside.
Yep! I don't particularly like moist bread so I don't add the water. I thought I mentioned the water in this video, but maybe it was just on my recipe blog post about it.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Thanks for posting this video. Its great! I think its easier to tell when its done by how crisp the crust is. Never tried to bake in one while I was traveling but thats always an option!
@@Yeshuaschosen You are very welcome! Glad you liked it. :) :)
Reall good tutorial!
I am just wondering if i need to add the 2/3 cups sugar for it to rise properly? Or can I leave that out? Would I need to add a substitution in that case?
Hello Alexa, it is only 1/3 cup not 2/3. You can reduce the sugar if you like. It won't wind up tasting the same. But the dough should still rise. Just add at least a tsp. of sugar for the yeast.
A flatter pan styled loaf, seated directly in the slow cooker for half the time of some waxed paper would have finished perfectly.
Several ways to do it. That is a classic bread loaf pan that I used. You could even forgo the pan altogether and just use parchment paper and make a round loaf. Or use a rectangle cake pan. It all depends on the side and type of crock pot/slow cooker you have. I wouldn't use wax paper, parchment paper is a better idea.
Looks good great idea have you made a cake in it
Thanks!! I haven't but it is definitely doable. I will probably do a video on it at some point.
Can you grill the loaf to make the top a little browner?? Great video by the way 🙏
Thank you! you can certainly try it, but it would probably overcook the bread by doing that. The steam from the crockpot is what makes the top look like that.
Hey Matt... JUST the video I was looking for! A few questions... do you think the crockpot bread may have risen a little smoother if it had been put into a preheated crock? Also, do you think adding a little water in the pot would have made a difference either way? Thank you for the comparison - it was a great, straightforward informational video & I appreciate it! Nice to know it CAN be done!
You are very welcome!! You can certainly try using a preheated crockpot, I am not sure if it will effect it. A little water like 1/2 inch deep on the bottom works it creates more steam so will steam it a bit more than the natural steam produced from the bread baking.
Matt, do you have a recipe calculated for a 9x5 loaf is the only size I Could find locally. Thank you,
That same recipe works with a 9x5 loaf, but you don't divide it in half, you just use the whole thing. However, it may not fit in your crock pot because it it pretty big pan. But you can still bake it normally in the oven and it will be great!
Hi Matt, we like to bake our bread outside in the Traeger.
That is awesome James!! Traeger's are amazing, my dream grill. I will own one some day. :)
Hi Matt, Great looking loaf but just a little concerned as to how much yeast you are using in such a small loaf. Isn't that going to be the main taste of the loaf ? I use a 7g sachet in the same size loaf, I recently lost my oven (we have a combi oven) for 2 weeks, I tried making my same ingredients loaf in a cast iron skillet, successfully ! can i sometime send through and ask if you'll make a video on the (no knead) wholemeal loaf, it is so easy to make. its known as the Grant loaf) a couple of others on here have tried but cant stick to the original recipe
Hi Jon! No that amount is for the entire bread dough which I divided into two loaves. So that loaf that you see in the crock pot is only half of the amount of dough. :) I do have a no knead bread recipe done in a dutch oven, but it is not whole wheat/meal. It can be found here - ruclips.net/video/GS94Un14qJw/видео.html, when I get the chance I will make a whole wheat version.
I made another dough recipe in the crock pot. For some reason I decided to start this at 9pm. Figured I have a half hour left I set my alarm. Woke up two hours later. Not bad but was a little dry.
Cool! Glad you tried it! :) Yeah not the best way to bake bread, but it works! And if for some reason your oven isn't working, or you live in a small flat without an oven, this is an option.
Can you add anything to the bread dough before you bake, like herbs or anything? Will the crust be as crispy if the bread has direct contact with the Crock-Pot (instead of using a pan)? I plan on trying this soon, thank you for your clear directions!
Hi Tiffany, yes you can add herbs in with the dough. :) The crust will be even crispier if you just use parchment paper and no pan. Another thing you can try is putting a little wire rack or some metal washers in the pan to elevate the pan so it isn't touching the pot. Let me know how yours turns out!
What do you think about using turkey roaster, which is basically a giant crock pot, but it has temperature dial. I am wondering, if I should just use same temperature and time as for the regular oven or change it somehow? My comes up to 450F.
Yeah I think that would work! You may not want to raise the temp that high though. :)
I wonder if you put the bread pan on a little wire rack in the crock pot or somehow reduced contact with the ceramic if it'd lower the temp and make it less crispy on the sides?
Yes!! I think it would work, I haven't tried that yet, because I don't have a little rock small enough to fit. However my rack that came with my air fryer accessory kit might just work. you could put a little bit of water in the bottom as well.
👍
Thank you! :)
I just started making more bread because of this quarantine; however, I surely didn't know you could use a crock pot. Tell me, could you use glass loaf pans in the crock pot? That's what I have. Enjoying your videos.
Hello Melissa! I haven't tried a glass dish, but I am pretty sure as long as it is oven safe it can go in a slow cooker. The oven gets much hotter than a crock pot. You may try putting down a little metal rack for it to rest on. Or like some metal washers that are stacked. And then maybe a cup of water. :)
Brilliant idea....thanks dude, as my oven is broke and doesn't work. That's my tomorrow morning job...
You are welcome! Let me know how it turns out. :)
@@inthekitchenwithmatt ....Turned out great, had to use the greaseproof paper method...but rather liked the shape, and crispness around the circumference of the loaf...As with many comments, thanks for sharing Matt....

BTW, do I need to pre heat the Crock-Pot ?? TY !!
Hello Bunny! :) You can pre heat the crock pot if you like. :) You are welcome! :)
Oh I love your recipe. Currently here in Australia I cannot find bread flour and yeast. Very frustrating because I do bake my own bread occasionally - and I am always on the lockout for new recipes. Any advice please 👍😊
Hello! You can use all-purpose/plain flour instead of bread flour. You can make a soda bread instead, they are not as light and fluffy as traditional yeast based bread, but they are so good. Here is my video for soda bread. ruclips.net/video/HxeytVPiMTc/видео.html
Pinch some of your husbands Fosters...seriously check out recipes for Beer bread you don't need yeast and it is good if you add cheese, chopped green onions, etc. Good luck from England.
@@carolannetitmus8481 Awesome idea! :)
If you put a paper towel between the bread and the lid of the crockpot the moisture will be absorbed.
True, that is if you want it to be absorbed. You can try it both ways and see how you like it.
Question: did you use an 8 qt. slow cooker? The bottom of my 6 qt. slow cooker is 9 x 6" inches. I was just wondering if the 8 x 4 loaf pans would fit. Also, I wonder if you elevated the the loaf pan off the bottom of the ceramic pot the bottom of the bread would be less crispy.
Hi there! The bottom of mine is 11x7 inches or right around there. The 8x4 should fit fine. Yes if you have a little rack you can put in there or metal washers even stacked up. You can put a bit of water on the bottom as well.
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe a small ball of foil on each corner. And I've seen some people put a paper towel (or you could use a kitchen towel??) under the lid to keep the moisture off the top of the loaf. I've been wondering about baking bread in the crockpot, and now I'm going to try it. Thanks for the video, Matt!!!
Will this work with a Pyrex glass loaf pan as well?
I don't see why not.
I have a Crock-Pot a 7 quart 700w Crock-Pot. Should I use the same settings and same timing ?
You will have to experiment with it and just try it. Crockpot baking bread isn't an exact process.
Question: Have you tried elevating the pan from the bottom of the crockpot? Wondering if that would result in a less crispy texture on the bottom & sides. If I get a chance, I'll try it and post an update, but my wife and I are low carb dieting and she might hate me for it. LOL! Thanks again!
You are welcome! I actually haven't, but that will probably work. You could use the small racks that you can get for air fryers which would be perfect to elevate it.
@@inthekitchenwithmatt Many thanks, Matt! 😎👍
@@winkfinkerstien1957 You are welcome!
Hey could you do this with keto bread
Hello, I am sure you could, I haven't tried it yet. But it should work.
Hi Matt: I have a question how hot does your water need to be when adding it to the yeast? I let the water run from the tap for a bit and it was quite a bit warm will that be okay to use? Also, how long do you need to let it sit in the water? Thanks in advance..OOOp's one more question, how long do you let the bread rise the second time after it is in the pan?
Hi Kathleen! The water needs to be between 105 and 115 degrees F. If the water was quite warm from the Tap, that is probably okay. As a rule I normally don't use tap water, I always use a good filtered water, but my tap water here tastes awful though haha, if your tap water tastes good then use it, if not use a bottled water. :) Put a pinch of sugar in with the water an then the yeast, let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it gets nice and foamy. Actually the second time after you put the dough in the bread pan, it doesn't need to rise again if you place it in a cold crockpot, then turn the crockpot on, the dough will continue to rise in the crockpot, if that makes sense? If for some reason you want to preheat the crockpot, then you can let the bread rise for another 45 minutes to an hour in the bread pan before putting it in the preheated crockpot. I hope those tips help? :)
Thank you Matt you answered all my questions.
You are very welcome Kathleen! Let me know how it turns out and if you need any other help! :)
Would a rack in the crock pot to prevent the pan from heating directly from the pot help?
Hi Robert! Yes if you have a small rack that can fit in the crockpot that would certainly help. :)
HEY MATT! I HAVE A CROCKPOT WITH DIFFERENT TIME SETTINGS FROM 4 HOURS UP TO 10 I THINK.. WOULD I JUST PUT IT THE LOWEST TIME AND CHECK AFTER 2-3 HOURS....? THANKS!
Sounds good! :) let me know how it goes! so yours only has time settings and now a low or high setting?
Hi Matt looks great
Just asking about canola oil. It use to be know as industrial oil, I’d prey to use olive oil. That shouldn’t make a difference?
Cheers
Hi Paul, you can use olive oil if you like. :) Or vegetable oil, coconut oil, avocado oil.
use coconut oil....the kind that is flavorless if you don't want the coconut taste.
yes...you do NOT want to use canola oil....see my comment above..
@@lynnreed7342 canola oil is fine to use. but plenty of options if you want to want to use it.
