    Do you need any mods to the ECU or map or MAF? Are there not instance's when the EGR would be commanded open and the ECU would expect a different reading at the MAP than it is getting?

    • @NatesToolbox

      Nah doesn’t seem to matter on this model but the PX2 ranger need a small hole in the plate or you’ll get error code so there must be an additional sensor on the newer models to detect flow

    Great video, thanks for going to the trouble of putting it up. I've just bought a very low mileage 2016 Ford Ranger (37000km) with the 5 cylinder diesel and am a bit worried about what the EGR cooler might do at some time in the future. We go to remote areas so reliability is very important. It's still under warranty so I can't mess with it yet. Does running with the EGR cooler completely bypassed have any effect on the engine over the long term. And can I ask where you got that blanking part from, it looked properly made and even had a part number.

    • @NatesToolbox
      @NatesToolbox  4 года назад +4

      Thanks Pete, as it’s only passing through the EGR valve bypassing the cooling shouldn’t affect anything negatively, I’m thinking it will benefit engine cooling as your not trying to cool down hot exhaust. The dealer will never spot an EGR blank (I’ve had an engine replaced due to faulty injector and they never noticed). Bypass going the cooling may need reconnecting though at every service unless you can get it serviced somewhere else (warranty usually states you can get it serviced by any mechanic it’s only the warranty repairs that require a dealer). Was a few years ago now, I’ve put the video on my new channel.
      I just got it from eBay, they are all the same just get cheapest stainless steel one :)

  • @joelyking7661

    So did you only block the one side? I've seen people say block both and re run the coolant lines. But this way seems much easier

    • @NatesToolbox
      @NatesToolbox  2 года назад +3

      Just the rear. Waste of time trying to block the front when the source is already stopped. It’s like turning the tap off (blocking plate) and then plugging the end of the hose just because 👍🏻. Apparently the cooler can possibly split mines ok but doesn’t hurt to disconnect and join together.

    • @joelyking7661

      @@NatesToolbox if it ever does you'd just lose coolant out the exhaust then hey?

    • @NatesToolbox
      @NatesToolbox  2 года назад

      @@joelyking7661 I think it would leak over the road or potentially get sucked into the intake but I don’t think it would have enough pressure to do that (the dirty gases from egr go back up into the intake manifold that’s why you wanna block it). High chance of overheating if your not watching your temp gauge often. I don’t think it’s a huge issue.

    I just remove the entire egr system and leave the egr motor on a bracket connected to the wiring harness to avoid fault codes. This method simplifies the cooling system, reduces points of failure and improved under bonnet clutter. A blanking plate needs to be fabricated for the exhaust side, i just TIG weld up the existing S/S inlet manifold egr pipe.

      Hey mate, I've just done my blanking plate today and I couldn't get to the top bolt because of all the breather lines and the egr cooler coolant hose being in the way. What I did was zip tie the coolant line which was in the way, to the engine lifting point at the back of the motor. This gave me much needed room and I was able to get two hands to help position the ratchet spanner properly on the bolt head. Best of luck.

      Haha, I wonder if all the extra maintenance unclogging intakes, poor intercooler & engine efficiency, replacement faulty EGR’s, blown engines due to faulty EGR coolers and so on due to these emission recirculating devices would out way the long term environmental benefits of having one. Things like a DPF & AdBlue on the other hand is definitely good for reducing emissions and they don’t affect the engine in any way.

      Jzx100aus thanks for asking, inserting the plate before the EGR prevents any gases from entering it at all.
      This keeps the EGR “cold” including the whole intake system which allows the cooler fresh air entering the air filter to stay cool rather than be mixed with the hot EGR gases. Definitely don’t unplug the EGR motor otherwise I’m certain you’ll get error codes. It will just operate as normal but without any gases passing through it.

    • @MrKylehopkins
      @MrKylehopkins 4 года назад +1

      Yes I see, interesting.
      So what would happen to all the gas in the pipe leading up to the plate from the exhaust, would that not clog up in the pipe/cooler? As it has no where to go?

    • @NatesToolbox
      @NatesToolbox  4 года назад +10

      Jzx100aus When blocking the EGR port you are redirecting the exhaust gases back out via the turbo, (where it was meant to go). So the gases won’t want to flow to the EGR pipe anymore as there is no flow pressure once blocked off.
      Directing all gases straight to the turbo it now means has slightly more pressure turning the blades and the turbo will spool quicker. (you will feel a very marginal increase in performance and that’s a good thing). Variable Vane Turbo Charges are also OK with blanking the EGR.
      EGR systems are not in place to help keep the engine from getting hot. This is a myth. The EGR is PURELY an emissions system.
      This is proven from the fact that at Wide Open Throttle, when the engine would need to most cooling, the EGR system is CLOSED. Yes, the engine is producing more NOx emissions however the reduced throttle position (because of EGR blanking) means you will be using less diesel and producing less soot or particulate matter.

    • @NatesToolbox
      @NatesToolbox  3 года назад

      @@craigg6879 Great question, the blanking plate blocks off the recirculating exhaust gasses which also contain some unburnt diesel which eventually clogs up the EGR mechanism and also dirties the intake causing loss of power. The coolant portion however will function as normal as this is a separate sealed system that flows through the EGR to keep the recirculating exhaust gasses cooler for Re entry into the intake with the fresh air. By blocking off the EGR you’re only allowing fresh clean air to get into the engine. The only reason to block off the cooling portion is because some people have had a hose break which would drain all the coolant from the engine. It’s not a huge risk but one that some like to prevent. You can also just check the condition of the hose or block it off completely.

    • @NatesToolbox
      @NatesToolbox  3 года назад

      @@craigg6879 not really, there’s heaps of other things that can also fail (we’ll have failed), like intercooler pipes, intercooler, alternator pulley, no.5 injector (this actually blew the engine up from diesel saturation - no warning at all) so yeah I’ve had worse so I’ll just cross it if it ever happened. I personally don’t know anyone that it’s happened to and I don’t do off-road so can easily just pull over if engine temps start to rise.

    I have a question
    when you close the EGR
    -DPF filter starts to clog more?
    -The engine warning light will not appear when the EGR is closed?

    • @NatesToolbox
      @NatesToolbox  4 года назад +2

      My opinion would be nothing would change except for a cleaner intake which should in turn result in a cleaner DPF due to more clean air entering the intake.
      You could argue that the exhaust doesn’t get to have a second round at burning off so the first round goes out the exhaust a bit dirtier but at the end of the day it’s the same exhaust and carbon deposits going through the system, The DPF should clean itself if you go for a decent drive so this is negligible, and we haven’t modified the EGR so all warning lights will still work if the EGR fails to operate, the Electronic valve that opens and closes is not part of the plate blocking and will still open and close however no exhaust gases will be recirculating past it so technically it should never clog up and jam.
