  • Its time to try and catch a halibut outside of the San Francisco Bay. In my last video we tried but failed. Today we are at Tomales Bay and I dont want to fail again. We need to catch our live bait first. Bait of choice is gonna be live jack smelt. Thats what is most prevalent in Tomales Bay waters right now, so if there is a hungry halibut, thats what they should naturally be feeding on. Bait was success and so was the big halibut. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed the video!

    I was out there and saw you out there! Said I loved the vids as we passed by. It was my first time halibut fishing and hooked up on a 34 inch for my first ever halibut around 3:30 and then I hooked up on a 28 and a half. My friend also hooked up on one as well so three in the boat for my first time and two for me.

    Great video, Chris! Nice presentation on catching smelt as well as the patience needed to catch halibut. Some of my best halibut fishing has been done with smelt, which stay lively much longer than anchovies. Also, you demonstrate the “big bait, big fish” motto very, very well! Thanks!

    Chris,
    I think that fish that broke your line was most likely a halibut. When I lived in So Cal. me and my brother went out and while fishing for bait my brother hooked something huge he finally got it to the surface and where we got a look at it and it was a halibut about 35”. We were fishing off a boat dock and I didn’t have a net. It ended up breaking the 4 lb test he was using.

    Hey Chris - is it tough to get to the Ocean from Nick's or Lawson's landing? Have you ever launched at Lawson's? I'm trying to plan a combo salmon halibut trip and the Google Earth pic shows a lot of white water going around Tomales point. Love your videos by the way.

    Did you launch at Tamales or Bodega? Is trolling inefficient in those waters? Would drifting
    anchovies work better there than smelt if you had them? I think most prefer an incoming tide when fishing for halibut in SF bay…why do you like an outgoing tide at Tamales? Lastly, like you I enjoy having company when fishing in my boat and I totally agree with you that fishing solo can be fun too…freedom to do what you want and to go where and when you want without approval, tacit or otherwise. I can always live with decisions I make on the water…not always the case with guests.

    At what foot tide is it okay to launch your boat? I watch the tide charts and it moves from -.07 to 6. Is it okay to launch at say 2 foot tide? or what is the lowest you can launch before getting stuck?

    • @ChrisPfish2
      @ChrisPfish2  3 года назад +1

      boat size matters. if your at 1 foot with an incoming tide you can most likely get in. 2ft you will have no problem unless you have a monster. hope that helps, thanks for watching

    How big of a smelt is too big for striped bass and halibut? And how can you fish live bait from shore

    • @ChrisPfish2
      @ChrisPfish2  25 дней назад +1

      No smelt is to big but its relative to the size of the halibut or striper. A 20" halibut or striper would eat a 10" smelt. A 10" halibut or striper would not eat a 10" smelt. Maybe try having the weight at the bottom of your line and a hook some place between 2-4 ft above it.

    Hey Chris, I was just out at Tomales for the first time crabbing and was planning on trying to catch a halibut in between pulls. We ended up not Halibut fishing becuase we were pretty busy with our nets and couldn't find a good spot to catch Smelt. What part of Tomales do you typically find the smelt? Closer to the mouth, near Hog Island? Appreciate any pointers you can provide. Thanks!
