  • I have been dreaming of the moment when I catch my first bluefin tuna on my boat for three years. Confidence is boosted after the last trip when we caught four on the D&D boat. I think its time to get my boat bloody. I got a sushi chef and fellow RUclipsr ‪@OutdoorChefLife‬ on board who is eager to catch his first.

The best set up is: most experienced...drive the boat, second experienced...gaff, least experienced...rod. The thing that should have been done is rod way down or out, and swing the stern away from the fish. The key is to keep the fish mid ship. Lots of steering near the end. Tough loss...it happens. Keep swinging.

whats the purpose of keeping the boat in gear seems counterintuitive. moving with the fish provides fresh oxygen to it. Would trimming both engines up and out of the way eliminate line on the prop

@@exploreoutdoors3978 I'm not saying fight the fish in gear...only that you should manuever the boat when needed as the fish is near the surface at the end of the fight. That's tricky, and why the most experienced crew member should be at the helm.

DRAG was Too Tight. Couldn't lift rod over the camera or the motors. Following fish around boat is fine as long as you keep the line clear. 😢😢😢😢

If you got your main and a kicker sticking out off the back, you have to either need to have someone who can run tight circles and pay attention to the fish or just stay put and have someone with enough strength to pass the rod tip around the engines. The smart alternative is to have the engine inside the boat and the wheel and rudder underneath it out of the wraps.

Man, Chris. What a battle and so unfortunate. Not that I am an experienced guy with BFT, but last time we put the rod as much forward as possible to reduce the prop risk. One guy on the rod, one guy pushing the rod forward to make sure it cannot slide backwards, and the third one on the wheel to keep the tuna on the side…. well, easier said than done. I know it all happens real fast. You will get one, sooner or later. I will go out tomorrow and try as well… keep at it - and many thanks for the footage. Always something to learn.

Interesting different Tuna tactics. In Los Barrilos Baja the " hotel boats " back up on the big Tuna and keep them in the water a long time before gaffing. When they do get to the boat they are swimming slow circles ( called the tuna dance ) so gaffing is manageable.

Chris, when you go thru the comments, you might find yourself not wanting to read the "negative" ones, but don't make that mistake. READ THEM ALL. They are all right on the money, and probably coming from experienced big tuna fishermen like myself. Read them and take the advice. Once upon a time, when we first started big tuna fishing and we didn't know shit, we all made mistakes and lost fish in the most stupidest ways. We all got the same advice. So even tough some of the advice may be critical, please know that everyone is trying to help. I know I speak for all of the subscribers when I say that we want to see a big bluefin on your boat.

Just a suggestion. In Kona, Hawaii - we put the motor up, when we've got the 200lb tuna pin wheeling under the boat. They make huge pin wheels that grab the props easily. So there's nothing the leader can wrap around under the boat. Good fight. Tight lines

  • @JS-sx3bl

    Right On Chis!
2 speed reel. Push the button for low speed…
Good job switching up the angler to stay fresh. It’s a We Fish…but next time could make all the difference.
Only some suggestions from a student of BFT fishing college which means ‘Big Fuel Time’…I’m also currently enrolled so just take it with a grain of salt!
    A. When the fish is close things happen quick so having a hand on the wheel to keep the angler in that rear quarter is important and throttle up to not allow the fish to swim ahead. The fish by getting ahead is taking a break and thinking it’s next move like chess…
    B. Keeping the boat gear is better and in a slow turn. I like Starboard side of the boat so that the helm operator can glance / view over the right shoulder easier.
    C. When it does happen that the fish goes towards the props or stern (where the sharp things are) it is important for communication by the “angler” to issue orders to the helmsman. So in your case actually next time do the opposite of stopping the boat by going into neutral and to ask to accelerate the boat away from the trouble may get you that fish next time.
    D. The rod person did well when under pressure to stuff the rod down potentially below the propeller/sharp stuff but the should next time evenly reduce the drag to let the fish out while getting a the anglers a better chance to tighten the drag up in a better body position to do that. More than likely the fish will continue to remain hooked and with only a few inches of bend remaining on the rod needs that full bend again to work again to even out the subtle head shakes at the end of the fight.
    Lastly
    E. The last fish you had was probably gaffed on its back tail section and the hook pulled out of the flesh. In addition the rod was too flexible as well so it surged out of its hooked placement, next time a 2x or 3x medium action could do better.
I did notice the upper rack needs a gimbal base to lock the rod in place where the eyes of the rod and reel are facing the correct direction for the spine of the rod to work without failure.
Great progress in your channel and your stronger than most to show not catching but “just fishing” and to ask us here to chime in.

Tuna are something else, best day as soon as you put it out you'd have a hook up. They're so strong you think they're beat as close in as yours and it'd take off and you start all over again that's how much line it'd take out. Having someone to position the boat is critical, the last place you want them is in the back. Guess sometimes they're so strong they're going to go where they want. You'll get one just have to be patient. Good Luck!

Hey Chris so my tips for you is that first of all get a 2speed reel like a shimano tailca or tigra and also don’t be in gear the whole fight. Only be in gear the Beginning of the fight, when the fish is still far away from the boat. Then whenever the fish get closer turn off the Motor and trim it up All the way. When you are in gear the whole fight your giving the tuna for oxygen so he is getting his energy back, but if you get him in a tuna circle the tuna won’t get as much oxygen through his gills. Make sure to use a rail instead of a rod holder like that

Disagree u have to keep boat running , blue fin spin under boat, they need some1 with experience on the wheel and some1 calling left or right hand down or reserves to control the fish, motor off and the fish goes under it will b to late, I think they need a gimbal belt and harness to start with that would make a huge difference using legs and the 2 speeds to gain the line back, it looks painful locked in that rod holder

@@ChrisPfish2 I'm a fan of heavy drag as well. Down south of you here some people fish heavy drag with the boat in gear to get the fish pointed at the back of the boat. Low gear and wind the fish right up to the boat. Most are very experienced fishermen and boat handlers and so are good at positioning the boat for the gaff shot on a greenish fish. 300ib + fish in the boat in under 15 minutes.
As other have mentioned low gear is your friend! Hope you guys get a couple more weather windows before this year is done.

Always try to have your fish toward the side meaning plenty of driving even moving away at times to have good angles, worst case is what happened to you but was avoidable with boat control. Finally waiting for the good gaff shot without rushing and panic! All comes with experience and that is what you guy's are gaining, best of luck for the next time 👍

I know the feelings of loosing the fish at gaff. We have been fishing these monsters many years in SoCal and learn a few things. Over tight drag equals fish loss, we set our to 22LB let the fish run as needed. BTW, when you are unable to reel in the fish, have one guy hand pull in the line while the other guy reels in.

If you had a top shot on there or not Pretty important ox ask is a shock leader. Also having your rods at a slight angle works better dragon script light strip like that and it’s someone someone mentioned before play them off of the corner and do wide circles around them. Also having someone studies Rod, while you’re real helps immensely and when you get them in a pinwheel close strip line from the first Rod guide. To the real takes a lot of work out a cranking and picking up slack

While keeping the boat in gear with minimal power the person at the wheel and angler must keep the fish and line behind the boat, by saying which way to turn the boat, then when the fish tires, the boat is turned so slack line is easy to reel in and the turn toward the fish cuts the corner, now the fun really happens when the fish is circling next to the boat, now keep the fish to one corner of the boat by steering right or left.

Chris I share in your heartbreak but when I saw your title I knew it wasn’t going to happen. You would had titled it “got my first bluefin tuna on my boat!” Had it happened. Maybe you should have me on your team as a newbie as a good luck charm because you know what they say about beginner’s luck! 😂

So close! Jocelyn needed to touch the rod one more time to insure you land what you hook. I am heading out early Monday to hopefully land my first blue fin on my boat 🍀 🤞
