I'm totally fine with just having video game levels, but if they can make the map more interesting than more power to them. In fact this game, Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Sonic Superstars make me so happy that we're getting just normal platformers again, instead of just big sandboxes full of _immersion~_
@@jameslawrenson1208 I never said they were. They're just not my taste, so it's been a little disappointing to see the latest two Zeldas, Mario Odyssey and Bowser's Fury, Sonic Frontiers and the latest three Pokemon games all going the open world route. But I know I'm in the minority there, especially with Elden Ring adding fuel to the open world craze. So many game of the year winners are big open worlds and I'm sure TOTK will get it this year.
Very weird to talk down on Odyssey like this, especially considering how long fans were waiting for the sandbox Mario formula to return. Or was the 15 year gap between Sunshine and Odyssey completely forgotten?
@@MochaRitz Very weird to think they are talking down on Odyssey. It really isn't though Odyssey isn't anything remotely like Sunshine, it is so open it forgoes level design. This leads to the world feeling amazing or like crap depending on how you understand the movement.

If anything I liked Odyssey more because it had a mostly linear sequence of world maps.
I noticed that their jump animations are just... chef's kiss. Especially Mario's. His jump looks near-exact to his jump animation from the OG Super Mario Bros. game. Also, apparently the death animations are a bit reminiscent to Super Mario World. Sudden stop when they turn to face the player with wide-eyed shock or grimace, then they stay upright while flailing their arms and legs as they fly up and fall off the bottom of the screen.
I think Yooka Laylee & The Impossible Lair had the best "overworld map with a bunch of secrets everywhere" I've ever seen in a game. Very fun to explore.
I find it surprising that a monster like Arlo got to officially play Super Mario Bros Wonder BEFORE RELEASE. I wish I could be as lucky as him, but alas. Probably something against Wario.
God this is the best a 2d mario game has looked in years!! the new super mario games were cool when they first came out but after almost 10 years and every 2d game has mainly been like that including both mario maker games this looks so fresh and amazing.
Demo was great! It was difficult at times for slower players to keep up, they'd die off screen so when playing with multiple people keep that in mind. The Camera focuses on one player and I forget how it decides which one to focus on.
Jumping up the same wall is a staple of the 3D Mario’s so im glad it’s here. In sunshine you had flud after a walljump, in Galaxy you had the spin to drift back, and in odyssey and now the new 3D world, you can turn around and dive back toward the wall you jumped off of. It’s a really important mechanic
listening to a guy speak passionate about Mario is great day in my book. Feels like only nintendo can do these extreme changes in their flagship franchises than not only draw in new players but are not alienating experienced ones
I'm convinced that this inevitable Pikmin 4 video is going to be multiple parts 2 hours long videos each that are going to put the breath of the wild mega deep dive review that Arlo did back when his channel began to shame.
I hope that half way through bowser drinks a box of apple juice and kicks me in the balls and puts my head in the toilet and I have to eat the elephant power to use toilet water in a boss fight
I'm pretty sure the random element of the Wonder Flower is that it changes each level it's in in a way that is different from other levels, so replaying the same level twice would have the same Wonder Flower effects, but the next level changes the effects
Im glad theyre still doing 2d Mario. A lot of the levels in Mario Maker felt like they played themselves, or otherwise didn't have the same charm as the older 2d Marios. Granted i really liked the puzzle levels, but too many people didnt like those.
I love how you hit the bullseye on Nintendo getting their creative mojo juices going and going to town on this title. They really shined bright based on gameplay and just letting the player be as interactive and surprised by what a 2D platform could do. Finally! Something akin to the Super Mario World game.
Interactive elements on the map is why I like Super Mario Bros. 3's maps slightly more than Super Mario World's maps, it's also something I really liked about Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. Hopefully Super Mario Bros. Wonder's map's will be just as involved. Arlo reaffirming that he's not that big into 2D platformers in general again makes me curious about his thoughts on Wario Land, since he said he wants a new Wario Land instead of a new WarioWare. Really hope he eventually does a video on that.
As someone who has always bee pretty bad at standard platformers, the badges' effectiveness are really what my entire experience is riding on. I hope that there's a badge that allows you to hover at the same altitude like you could with Peach in 3D World because that would make this so much more fun
Mario 1-3 and World are a different series than anything that has come since. I’ve been waiting for this long-abandoned series to finally get the sequel it needs. I’m hoping this is it.
Small thing but I already can't wait for this style to be in Mario Maker 3. I still hope they add 1 more retro style (or ideally, leave the old styles behind and add like 4 new ones: 3d World can stay, then Yoshi's Island, Wonder and idk Mario Sunshine or Galaxy or Odyssey or something), but really, even 1 new style and some extra power ups in the old styles does a tonne.
i hope your neck recovers well soon, & I'm glad you had a good time with the game, I'm now looking forward to it also single wall Wall-jumps give me life
I don't know if it will hit the same polish as Rayman Legends for me, but I am very interested in Wonder just for finally changing the 2D Mario Formula
Was one of the fortunate souls that went to Nintendo Live to play this game. While it was only for 15 mins, I had fun! This will be a hard game to put down, there's so much eye candy and animations that are feast for the eyes. My biggest gripe with Nintendo Live were the crazy long lines, I didn't even get to get a merch as people reported being in line for two solid hours. I've waited in line for the concerts and photo ops, after PAX the day before my feet were done... and I was getting very hungry. PAX had concessions, Live did not and if you left you had to wait in line to get back in.
Hey Arlo! My kid and I were at Nintendo Live and met Yoshiller in the line for the Smash tournament. He had a blue Yoshi hoodie and gave us a business card. So cool you were there. We also played Wonder.
The art style feels like a cross between Super Mario 3 and Super Mario World, I was sold the moment I saw that we were finally leaving the plastic, child-cartoon feel 2D Mario has had since the Wii. I've had fun with New Mario Bros but this looks much more like Mario to me. Animations look so slick too, Mario is supposed to have just a dash of crude, adolescent humor that has been airbrushed out for too long. Man I'm excited for this one. What a year for video games.
I cannot wait to get Super Mario Bros Wonder it looks so much fun to play and also well you also gotta talk about the Nintendo Direct since it's happening this week so you better talk about that since everyone is
This is gonna put the NSMB series into shame. Everything from the different plot, to the evolution; yet still formulaic of the gameplay, the intriguing level designs, playing different characters, the challenge, etc. I hope this is how the future of 2D Mario games will take notes from.
It’s giving super Mario bros 2 on 3DS in terms of how new the game feels and I’m all for it ! New animation, power ups and even kingdom! This is definitely going to be one of the best 2D Mario’s
this really feels like the first 2D Mario game that hasn't been phoned in since... what... Super Mario World? Super Mario Land 2? everything 2D since the New series first appeared on the wii has felt half-assed to me
I also played this at Nintendo Live (Hate that I missed you Arlo), and I really loved it! It was fun playing with people! And it's got that Mario charm that's just fantastic! The charm that I think got lost in the New Mario Bros games.
I can tell from like the snippets of gameplay footage that they took some inspiration from fanmade levels in mario maker, can't see what other fun and wacky stuff this games got in store.

Small thing but I already can't wait for this style to be in Mario Maker 3. I still hope they add 1 more retro style (or ideally, leave the old styles behind and add like 4 new ones: 3d World can stay, then Yoshi's Island, Wonder and idk Mario Sunshine or Galaxy or Odyssey or something), but really, even 1 new style and some extra power ups in the old styles does a tonne.
i hope your neck recovers well soon, & I'm glad you had a good time with the game, I'm now looking forward to it
also single wall Wall-jumps give me life
I don't know if it will hit the same polish as Rayman Legends for me, but I am very interested in Wonder just for finally changing the 2D Mario Formula
Super Mario Bros. Wonder looks great it’s the innovative fresh take 2D Mario needed.
THE THOUSAND YEAR DOOR IS GETTING AN HD REMAKE.
That wall jump movement is a game changer. Movement is INCREDIBLY important for me as a gamer, and I LOVE mechanics like that 😍
Glad to hear it! I pre ordered it and can't wait to try it!
I’m so excited, I really hope it’s atleast challenging to an extent
I'm gonna take your word on being more impressed by the at style. I'm still not sold on it
When you started explaining how the badges work, my excitement for this game shot through the roof!
i was at that event and got to play the game, it was very fun!
This game starts a new era in the Mario franchise!
Arlo... watch the direct...
I cannot wait to get Super Mario Bros Wonder it looks so much fun to play and also well you also gotta talk about the Nintendo Direct since it's happening this week so you better talk about that since everyone is
Arlo!!!! It's happening!!!!!!🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉
This is gonna put the NSMB series into shame. Everything from the different plot, to the evolution; yet still formulaic of the gameplay, the intriguing level designs, playing different characters, the challenge, etc. I hope this is how the future of 2D Mario games will take notes from.
TTYD IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The sheet music that appears in the clip Arlo shows right near the end of the video is the start of the Enemy Fight theme from SMB3!!!
It’s giving super Mario bros 2 on 3DS in terms of how new the game feels and I’m all for it ! New animation, power ups and even kingdom! This is definitely going to be one of the best 2D Mario’s
I'm not as informed but, are there more over worlds as good/interesting as Yooka Leylee and the impossible Lair out there?
this really feels like the first 2D Mario game that hasn't been phoned in since... what... Super Mario World? Super Mario Land 2? everything 2D since the New series first appeared on the wii has felt half-assed to me
…the New series first appeared on DS, and in what world was that one phoned in?
Hot take, I think New Soup DS is a more fun game than World.
WAHOOO, IT'S GOOD!
Do the video funny man i need your funny reaction
