The genius of this game all comes from Maker 2. They knew just making a new Mario game that players could make themselves would be no good. They literally broke all the rules because that was the move, that’s the brilliance of this entry. Might be the best Mario 2D ever made, and I don’t say that lightly.
Yeah, I've been thinking this as well. There's a lot of design decisions in some of the shorter levels that deviate a lot from the traditional 2D Mario formula (even one-screen puzzles, lol) and I really feel like the devs were influenced by what people were building in Maker. I'm most of the way through World 4 so it's still a tad bit early to tell, but this might even beat out World for me, which has been my favorite Mario game for ages. Lots of creativity on display here - it's absolutely brilliant.
Yeah, even that level he shows in the video with the stampede that you ride, that reminds me a lot of certain Mario Maker 2 courses where you're running along but activating a P switch changes something as you're running and jumping over gaps and following kind of a track.
@@exoplanetarydev yeah I'm loving the style and creativity present here. So far my only complaint is that it's been fairly easy so far...more so than other 2d Mario's (even the generic ones). It's like a more self contained version of one of my favorite things that the Donkey Kong Country games tend to do with their levels where sometimes there's just a fun unique mechanic that just makes one fun, memorable level.
Well said, played this with my friend and the laughs we had with that wonder seed parts were refresh and just fun. Won’t get the game till later on but it’s on my list for the collection.
@@TaliesinMyrddin some levels they're required, but most of them, you can just skip them. however, there are gates that require a certain number of wonder seeds to progress, so you still need to collect about half of them.
My favorite part so far are the wonder flowers. Completely random. Some are pretty straight forward but some…wow. To avoid spoilers, the one that shoots you into the air…I immediately said out loud to no one…”this is the coolest game” Oh yea…also love how there’s no clock so I can explore to my hearts content. This is a true gem
Honestly so far it's been one of my favorite mario games of all time. The amount of content in this game is wild, and literally right as you think you've seen everything, you're thrown into something weird and "wonderful" all over again. Such a good experience.
I've only finished the first world as of now, but I know while I was playing through it I kept walking around the map thinking that I'd seen all the stages and then there kept being more side paths. Like holy hell man I don't know if my brain is still stuck in the past because I haven't played 2D Mario extensively in a very long time, but it felt like just the first world was packed with so many stages. Makes me excited to see what is to come in the future.
This game makes me feel energized and kinda like a kid again, which is great. Playing online alongside others is fun too. The amount of interactions I’ve had is fun. The wonder seed gimmick makes levels so unique and fun. I LOVE THE MUSICAL BITS. This is just such a new breath of air for Mario and I love it.
This game is so good, absolutely beautiful. Definitely breathes some fresh life into 2D Mario. The environments are creatively surreal, the character designs are cute. And the new power ups are so cool.
one world in and i've been blown away by every turn of every level so far... the attention to detail, the level design, the visuals, the backgrounds, the animations, the wonder effects, the soundtrack.. everything is on point, everything.. Wonder truly feels like next the evolution in 2D Mario we've been waiting for since Super Mario World..
I had the same reaction. I was expecting a lot of stuff with the wonderflowers but the musical completely suprised me. It reminds me of old amusement parc shows where the mechanical puppets sing ^^ There have been some other wonders in the first 2 worlds that where much better than I anticipated. Great game so far.
The Pirahna Plant musical score also had me jawdropped. Soooo unexpected and really set the mood for the wackyness of the game. I love everything about it so far
My first impressions are the same! The most amazing part was the singing pirahna plants, and I don't know if you noticed this detail, but if you fire'd a plant, their part was no longer in the music track, like they are actually the ones that are singing!
Something that’s also incredible is that while playing with my pro controller I noticed that the HD rumble doesn’t just vibrate, but also makes sounds that correspond to what you are doing on screen! Like if you’re running over the music block notes, if you listen to your controller, you can hear it making the notes as well! Same thing goes for the speed boost platforms! It totally blew my mind when I noticed! Why hasn’t Nintendo used this in their games before! It adds such an extra layer of depth to an amazing game!
Something that isn’t talked about enough is the removal of the time limit. It’s so much better, I can take in the scenery and look for the secrets. My only worry is that the wonder seeds get repetitive, I don’t want it to be like odyssey where at first all the moons are super cool but gets boring after finding what spot rumbles the hardest for the 100th time
So far I’ve 100% world 1 and wow…. Think this has already turned into my favourite 2d Mario game. It’s definitely high up there for favourite Mario games of all time. Those wonder flowers, the animation and music and levels… my first game was super Mario bros Wii and it makes me so happy to see how see this and how far we have gone. ❤
@@TheNintenfan64from the levels list you can see whether you have 100% on one by seeing if there's a green check mark behind all the collectibles. I haven't beaten world 1 yet but an early level has a very well hidden secret exit
I am pleasantly surprised at how well the online works and how it makes the game that much more enjoyable for me. I find myself waiting for people to finish levels together, helping each other along the way. All without having to say a word, the game just makes you wanna cooperate with others
I find it interesting that there was a whole era of the 3D Mario games being influenced by the 2D Mario games, and now it's seems like we're getting the opposite. We're getting the creativity in the early 3D marios and odyssey into Mario Wonder.
It’s amazing to play a game like this that really thinks about the experience of playing it from the beginning. Much like watching a really good, special movie made by someone who knows what they’re doing right off the bat. It just feels so special.
My version of that is "dude this is SO FREAKING FUN." And I literally just did the smallest task or action. Or when you beat one of those harder challenge short stages and you're like "I wanna do it again," like a little kid that just found something fun to do.
Got the game and loving every second of it. The thing with Mario games is the level of “polish” it always runs silky smooth. The consistency from Nintendo in that realm is amazing. Most games are choppy , have frame rate drops, need patches. But with Nintendo the games always feel “finished “ . I appreciate that!
I've found at least two Sunshine references so far. The elephant trunk fill sound effect is almost identical to the FLUDD accessory box opening sound, and one of the underground themes is a refresh of one of the Sunshine themes but I can't remember where you hear it in Sunshine.
One of the most refreshing parts of this game to me is how varied each world is. The actual layout of the world follows a progression depending on where you're going. When you get to new world it's not just like "great, 8 more sand levels." You're always pleasantly surprised.
My favorite thing about that Piranha Plant moment is the title of the song "Piranha Plants on Parade" like it's a reference to "Pink Elephants on Parade"! This game is straight up a drug trip and I LOVE IT!!
I’m close to 40, and just when I’m starting to think I don’t connect with games in the way I used to, here is this truly delightful game that is pure joy to play! A rare gift of a game only Nintendo could deliver.
Mario Wonder, man. I seriously cannot think of another nintendo game that has thus far been given this much polish and details specifically in the graphics and animation. I'm not saying it's the best Nintendo game, but I struggle to think of a better looking one
I'm so glad you brought up Piranha Plants on Parade. I've been losing my mind feeling like I was the only person absolutely blown away by it! I didn't see it mentioned anywhere else and I just felt like.. how are people not flipping out about this?!
I’m right there with you. I went in kinda going “yeah OK I know what the wonder thing does I saw the trailers, nothing will be too shocking” but the singing Pirahna Plants managed to surprise the hell out of me in such a visceral way and the game hasn’t stopped since. The creativity on display is next level even as a Nintendo product and especially as a 2D Mario, and NO 2 stages are alike, even ones with similar theming which is such a break for 2D Mario. Like yeah OK maybe these 2 are both water levels but they manage to be completely different and every stage so far has been it’s own unique, incredible idea. Absolutely the best 2D since the early New Soup days (and miles better in retrospect)
I think what really tells me this is a triumph is that sure it stands out even more thanks to how stale the 2D games had become but I can confidently say that even if that hadn’t been the case and 2D Mario had been constantly evolving this STILL would stand out as incredible.
Blue toad and Yellow toad, are so different personality wise. Yellow toad is just a chill dude (I chose yellow toad as my main) and Blue toad just feels different
The singing Pirahna Plants was something special. That was pure joy. The last time I felt pure joy while playing a game was early on in Super Mario Galaxy.
My first impression of Super Mario Bros Wonder is that it's a really good game because all the characters, the enemies, the music, the levels, and everything just looks fantastic Nintendo did so good with looks so good with this game and it looks amazing.
My personal favorite part of modern mario game trend, is the developers removing unnecessary mechanics. Like removing Lifes from mario Odyssey, and removing the level timer from Wonder. Yhe only times in Wonder is explicitly when the timer IS the challenge. Otherwise yiur given the tome to explore and enjoy each level in Mario Wonder, and I think thats really great.
Don't want to spoil, but the singing plant level isn't just a one off thing. I stumbled on them again today elsewhere and it's a hectic one. Grats on the move to WA! The visit to Seattle opened my eyes to a whole new culture that doesn't exist here in AZ. Though I probably can't afford Seattle, I could go Redmond or something... not Spokane though, well maybe.
What I love is that, besides the wonder flower, there’s always new in every level you play, and it might just be for that one level, and that’s just so cool
Yep, Piranha Plants on Parade was the establishing level for just about everyone. Nintendo could have included it on the demo I played, though. The game would have been all the rage in previews that way. Can we also (mild, _mild_ spoiler alert) appreciate the levels having a star-measured difficulty level, with a whopping 4-out-of-5 stage popping up in the FIRST world?! Because dang, that level is insane and I'm fearing what else the game might throw at me
Watching my son play this game felt like watching myself play super mario world for the first time. At one point, there was a puzzle level where he needed to find one more coin and he (and anonymous online players) were searching the small level for a few minutes. Suddenly he figured out how to get it and was allowed to beat the level. I said “great! Now you can beat the level!” “No. I need to help my friends!” He said, as he proceeded to jump around and mime what needed to be done to a bunch of strangers. Finally, they all completed the level and so did my son. I didn’t think my heart could be more prouder of him… until he immediately entered the level again… to help out more strangers. I know I know it’s just a game but I’ll never forget how MARIO WONDER helped me see/underscore what a determined, smart and kind gamer/person he is.
There were two things early game that made me crack a big goofy grin. Only mild spoilers I promise Captain Toad! Exploring the world map and bumping into him was a delight! The Special Stage Music from Super Mario World.
i picked this up for my kids today as last weekend school hollidays. i was busy doing something else but checking it out. but when the plants started singing my kids loved it. was so well done
I’m with you, loving Mario Wonder, loving Sonic Superstars too. Not sure why folks are griping about Superstars. It’s literally a 2.5D Sonic game with (finally!) the right physics, multiple characters to choose from and great level design. If you’re a classic Sonic fan and that’s not working for you, what would? I mean, Mario Wonder is the better game, but nobody should be surprised at that. Still, both are great. This was a good week to be a 90’s kid, that’s for sure.
Wonder is the greatest side scroller Mario I’ve ever played, and it dethrones Tropical Freeze as my favorite side scroller ever. They nailed every aspect of this game. An instant classic.
I have to say, the overall style reminds me of old Nintendo Power Magazine covers, it’s especially noticeable when Mario starts sprinting in this game or if he gets a power up.
I'm glad Nintendo opted to do something a bit weirder for a new 2D Mario. I'm almost at the end of the game and it has been a really fun ride thus far! This honestly feels a bit like Mario 3/World mixed with the weird creativity of Yoshi's Island. There are lots of secrets and memorable set pieces that were fun to go through. I like that you actually have more character choices as well. There is a lot to like about it. The Switch has given us games of familiar franchises that give us something a bit different from their traditional roots like Zelda: Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom and Kirby and the Forgotten Land. I hope Nintendo continues to creatively experiment a bit with their franchises.
2023 is delivering for videogames, isn't it? Nintendo in particular has been on absolute fire this year! The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the almighty Pikmin 4, & now Super Mario Bros. Wonder. This is what happens when GAMEPLAY comes first & foremost from PEOPLE who are passionate about making GAMES. Never change, Nintendo. Keep putting smiles on Arlo's face.
I am happy you mentioned the scene with the singing Piranha Plants, because I went into this game very sceptical thinking that what I've seen from the trailers might as well have been just another New Super Mario Bros with only surface level distinctions. But that moment grabbed me and opened me up for a new experience, and while it still took until the second world for me to fully let go of my doubts, I gotta praise this sequence for showing just how much more creative this game gets than its predecessors. I am having a great time and am getting more and more hooked, 2023 just doesn't let us down. ^^
These games always introduce a new creative concept. That’s been their purpose since the beginning. With Wonder, you have the elephant & Wonder Flower mechanic. It’s amazing through and through.
They really made this game feel like a fresh new experience. The old Super Mario Bros games I got tired of real quick, sunked so far 8 hours into this, and it's alot of fun. Going for 100% completion, really like the graphics and how wacky the game can be with the wonder mechanic.
I finished World 1 and the interlude (yes, there are interludes between worlds). One thing that got me was home much they stuffed into the world and where all you find them. I know there are only six worlds, but you get the sense this game is still more meaty than any of the "New" series.
I must say, I ADORE the talking flowers. They’re so charming. There have been times where they’ve said things like “good job with (this)” and it just boosts my mood.

To avoid spoilers, the one that shoots you into the air…I immediately said out loud to no one…”this is the coolest game”
Oh yea…also love how there’s no clock so I can explore to my hearts content.
I totally agree the singing plants were so out of nowhere and super silly oozing with charm, they really bringing the magic back
I love how it looks and especially how it feels. Once you build up momentum, you can keep going with it. Speedruns are going to look insane.
This game makes me feel energized and kinda like a kid again, which is great. Playing online alongside others is fun too. The amount of interactions I’ve had is fun. The wonder seed gimmick makes levels so unique and fun. I LOVE THE MUSICAL BITS.
This is just such a new breath of air for Mario and I love it.
same
This game is so good, absolutely beautiful. Definitely breathes some fresh life into 2D Mario. The environments are creatively surreal, the character designs are cute. And the new power ups are so cool.
Agreed
I can't wait to play it.
@@genjis5155I played it earlier and it's truly a masterpiece
I'm loving it so far
one world in and i've been blown away by every turn of every level so far... the attention to detail, the level design, the visuals, the backgrounds, the animations, the wonder effects, the soundtrack.. everything is on point, everything.. Wonder truly feels like next the evolution in 2D Mario we've been waiting for since Super Mario World..
My favorite part is that all the demos kept this locked away.
They knew they had something special. And they kept it close until the right moment ^^
“I got two sore cheeks now because I just keep getting smacked around” - Arlo 2023
i really hoped youd mention the singing piranha plants because it was such a joyous suprise having them burst out into an adorable musical number
Sssh. Keep it a surprise.
You might even say it's "wonderful"
Stop

I new super Mario bros u deluxe when people will stop making this pun :P
I’m so happy Arlo talked about the singing Pirahna plants. I’ve been gushing over them since I saw that level. It was awesome!
Mario Wonder is truly wonderful. I'm in world 3 and already my favourite 2D mario by far!
Play Super Mario World on the SNES. Thats the best 2D mario
@@chiquita683 nah mario 3 better
@@YhanStatikknah mario wonder better
I beat the game a day before it came out. That's the power of ROMs and Emulators!
@@chiquita683world was never even that good
I had the same reaction.
The goofy ear to ear smile I get anytime a Wonder Effect activates proves how good this game is. Pure creative game design
They've done it before though
I’m still missing seeds in world 1. A certain shadow course is hiding a exit I’m SURE OF IT.
It just feels so special.
i’ve caught myself saying out loud to an empty room “wow this is DELIGHTFUL” while playing this game so far. truly a treat!
So fun! I think a lot of us forgot that this is how a great video game can make us feel! It’s pure joy, so thank you Nintendo.
This game is such visual candy. And it even has challenge if you’re looking for it. Definite platformer of the year, no contest.
One great thing about SMB Wonder being out is that now we don’t have to deal with that clip of the pipe wonder with purple coins being left behind
6:54 "I got two sore cheeks now because I keep getting smacked around" Man, Arlo LOVES this game
I love musical levels in platformers, they're always a highlight
I was giddy with joy when those piranhas plants came out and started singing
I’m close to 40, and just when I’m starting to think I don’t connect with games in the way I used to, here is this truly delightful game that is pure joy to play! A rare gift of a game only Nintendo could deliver.
"But who will speak for the trees?"
Arlo. Arlo will speak for the trees in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
Mario Wonder, man. I seriously cannot think of another nintendo game that has thus far been given this much polish and details specifically in the graphics and animation. I'm not saying it's the best Nintendo game, but I struggle to think of a better looking one
That intro is a bit like the beginning of years of the kingdom. I loved walking into the catacombs with zelda
The Piranha Plant level is absolutely amazing. I've lost track of how many times I've played it now....
The joycons even make musical notes when you run on the music blocks, I've never seen another switch game use the rumble like that 😅
The is the most exciting 2D Mario has been since the early 90s
You realize that thumbnail opens itself up to more Arloverse memes right? Now I’m wondering what Green Arlo thinks of the game
The second level being a piranha plant marching band was an amazing idea.
Well, New has become Old and Wonder is the new New. Wonderful!
Glad for this video. The game’s opening really hit me and I’m glad to have that impact articulated this way.
The music parts of this game are so amazing. I was not expecting it but they turn out to be a jam.
The part with the singing plants reminded me a lot of rayman, I was smiling for the entire song
What I love is that, besides the wonder flower, there’s always new in every level you play, and it might just be for that one level, and that’s just so cool
ngl from what I've seen, I'm getting heavy Rayman Origins vibes
Now you can beat the level!”
“No.
I think this is the first 2D Mario since SMB2 to have neither scoring or a timer
Yes
There were two things early game that made me crack a big goofy grin. Only mild spoilers I promise
Captain Toad! Exploring the world map and bumping into him was a delight!
The Special Stage Music from Super Mario World.
i picked this up for my kids today as last weekend school hollidays. i was busy doing something else but checking it out. but when the plants started singing my kids loved it. was so well done
Started playing after work, and it's so magical! Glad to see 2D Mario become more stylized and experimental
I feel like this game is perfect timing for my mental health lol
I’m with you, loving Mario Wonder, loving Sonic Superstars too. Not sure why folks are griping about Superstars. It’s literally a 2.5D Sonic game with (finally!) the right physics, multiple characters to choose from and great level design. If you’re a classic Sonic fan and that’s not working for you, what would? I mean, Mario Wonder is the better game, but nobody should be surprised at that. Still, both are great. This was a good week to be a 90’s kid, that’s for sure.
the drumroll and cymbals for a ground pound is *chefs kiss* 🤌
When I played level 2 that’s when I realized how good this game is going to be.
Wonder is the greatest side scroller Mario I’ve ever played, and it dethrones Tropical Freeze as my favorite side scroller ever. They nailed every aspect of this game. An instant classic.
I wonder if the piranha plant singing level was inspired by the Super Mario RPG Japanese commercial? 🤔
I have to say, the overall style reminds me of old Nintendo Power Magazine covers, it’s especially noticeable when Mario starts sprinting in this game or if he gets a power up.
Wonder captures a magic I haven’t felt in 2d Mario since Super Mario World and Mario 3 when it felt like brand new things were constantly happening.
I... may have cried a few tears of joy on a certain level... DONT JUDGE ME
The best par is even the story acknowledges how goofy bowser is by not even trying to explain him becoming a Castle
Completely missed that Peach rode in on Yoshi when i played the intro, so adorable and appropriate in universe.
The wait was totally worth it, im on world 6 and i am LOVING this game
They definitely took a lot of inspiration from the Rayman games and I love it!
I couldn't stop smiling when the Piranha plants broke out into song. So so wonderful.
When i saw the piranha plants singing i was so thown back and smiled so much. It was amazing.
These games always introduce a new creative concept. That’s been their purpose since the beginning.
With Wonder, you have the elephant & Wonder Flower mechanic. It’s amazing through and through.
my favorite tiny thing is the pose the characters make when they put down their standees
I'm sorry, but my favorite part is definitely the talking flowers! They are actually pretty clever and funny!
Apology not accepted
@@mr.awesome6011 Gasp! The nerve!
I think piranha plants on parade is a reference pink elephant on parade.
Anyone else notice that the HD rumble makes sounds that coincide with the Pirannha Plant level? That's one of my favorite aspects.
