And a good excuse to help people figure out what to do or where to go, same with those little floating blue unbloomed petal things that spawn a line of coins pointing to where you should go when you touch them that are throughout the levels- I haven’t even seen people mention those. Your description of Mario Wonder reminded me a lot of the reasons I love Yoshi's Island, and I'm glad you concluded the video referencing that game.

I still remember playing Yoshi's Island for the first time. It was a lifechanging experience. As much love as it gets I still feel it's an underrated gem. There are very few games I would call "perfect." Tetris is a hard lock. Yoshi's Island though? Maybe it's not perfect but it's so close to perfect I feel it's fair to argue it is. The beautiful spritework still stands to this day as some of the best of all time imo. The graphics were especially incredible for its time on the SNES no less. That 3D chip was such a wonderful idea. And don't even get me started on the OST. To this day random tracks from this game will suddenly start playing in my head. I also think it has the best fortress theme of any Mario game.
There was a sense of magic to Yoshi's Island that few experiences ever quite match. It is one of the few games I ever gave a perfect score to.

I feel like this game is in some ways a response to everything that came out of Mario Maker. Players got such mileage out of the standard Mario elements and came up with such amazing designs, that Nintendo must have seen it all and realized that in order to make a new 2D platformer, they needed to do something truly unique and impossible to imitate. That's why I think there's so many brand new ideas in each level; an example of fan-content pushing the developers to innovate their own IP and bring back the "wonder" that was originally associated with the series from the beginning.

  • @Howlingburd19

@@Parallelocam Its not about revolutionize the Mario formula is just about adding new and fresh ideas.
I was already tired of the New Super Mario Bros. Series because they all felt like the same game, the aesthetic of the games was also very boring (they even recycled the music and the animations from the DS one). When Nintendo announced Super Mario Maker i thought that was Nintendo saying "okay make your own levels cause we don't know wtf we should do anymore", i legit thought that was the end of the 2D games.
In Wonder every level feels unique and different from each other and has a ton of variety, also the animations and graphics have been improved, wich makes it the most visually pleasing 2D Mario game ever.
Of course is not a revolutionary game but for me is definetly the best 2D Mario game since Super Mario World(at least in my opinion).

The sheer level of creativity and childlike wonderment in Mario games is genuinely heartwarming and nostalgic to the old days of gaming I grew up during. Games made to BE GAMES. Not movies with gameplay. Those are fun too. But Nintendo, still believes in pure gaming. Which is fantastic as well. Their legal department is a bunch of friggin' Nazgûl, but the developers are keeping that flame alive.

Like, if 500 new fan games go up one month, and Nintendo only DMCA’s 300 of them, (because that costs time and money,) and then that happens every month for dozens of years, then yeah you’re gonna have thousands of games that haven’t been taken down, but it’s just the ones their legal department hasn’t gotten to yet
Edit: I’m down to be wrong though. If there’s really ones that Nintendo are confirmed just cool with then that’s actually hella interesting lol

@@PlayMadness Also, just because Nintendo may choose to ignore a project doesn't make me wrong. And it's not just fan projects. They are spiteful in litigation. Remember the hack seller Bowser? Went to prison, and was sued for 10 MILLION for selling modding tools for hardware that they own. He'll never be able to pay that back, and they know it. They ruined his life over something stupid. Just a mega-corp pushing a kid around.

Honestly, this has been one of the most fun and creative Mario games in a while. Every course is extremely fun to play and explore, and the Wonder effects are a welcome change of pace.
My only complaint is that excluding the final two courses, this game was extremely easy. I 100 percented every level leading up to the final Bowser conflict first playthrough and 100 percented the entire game a few days later.
For reference, I often find myself struggling with the later pre-bowser courses in Super Mario Bros. 3 and World. So I could only imagine how easy this game is to long time veterans of the series.
Despite that though, I do highly recommend it to anyone looking for a Mario game closer in design philosophy to Super Mario Bros. 3 and World. It won’t challenge you as much as those older titles, but compared to the New Super Mario Bros. games from the past few years, it is a welcome breath of fresh air.

Legit I feel like this game took the best elements of all the 2d Mario games and put them into 1. The cute/wacky worlds of Mario World SNES, The funny transformation/side objectives in Yoshi's Island SNES, the difficulty of Mario 3, the different and unique appearance of Mario 2. Its so fantastic. I'd recommend this game to literally anyone who has ever been a 2d mario fan even once in their life. Playing through this game made me feel nostalgic to so many periods of my life where I was playing one of the games mentioned above, be it as a 9 year old playing Yoshi's Island on my GBA, being at my aunts house as a 5 year trying to find hidden exits in Mario World, exploring the interesting/different world of Mario 2, and the frustration and me outright shutting off the game like 100000 times whenever I died playing Mario 3.

I honestly think Super Mario Odyssey turning out to be a huge success paved the road for them to try a similar approach in Wonder in that they're free to try new game mechanics instead of being forced to play it safe with gameplay as other big studios with established franchises make their design teams do.
