The Wheelers get in an argument because April (Kate Winslet) realizes that she no longer is in love with Frank (Leonardo DiCaprio).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Titanic shipmates Kathy Bates, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Kate Winslet step onboard for director Sam Mendes' tale of suburban malaise in 1950s-era Connecticut. Adapted from the classic 1961 novel by author Richard Yates, Revolutionary Road tells the tale of a young Connecticut couple whose once-idealistic relationship steadily deteriorates into a ceaseless cycle of petty jealousy and bickering as they strive to retain their independence in the conformity-obsessed world of picket fences and perfectly manicured lawns. Ever since they first met, Frank (DiCaprio) and April (Winslet) saw themselves as special and different. They strive to form their relationship around higher ideals, though upon moving into their new home on Revolutionary Road, the defiant couple pledges never to be confined by the social conventions of the era. As time passes, however, Frank and April gradually become the very thing that they both feared most -- a typical suburban family complete with abandoned dreams and faded hopes. Frank loses his nerve after taking a comfortable job with a reliable salary, and April morphs into an unsatisfied homemaker desperate for passion and excitement. But April's independent spirit hasn't been suffocated just yet, and when she hatches a plan to head for Paris, her need to escape at all costs stands in direct contrast to Frank's desire to hold on to what they already have.

the way kate asks if leo’s gonna hit her as she’s trying to be strong but is backing up into the end table is terrifying and realistic to how abusive relationships feel from the person with less physical power. both phenomenal actors. it felt hauntingly real.

@@chelseasfilms22 agreed. 99% of people won't fall in love in 24 hours the way Jack and Rose supposedly did, but there are some really cute/good couples with regular relationship issues from time to time in the real world. The same way most people won't experience the exagerated friendships in movies either, but real good friendships still do exist. Same thing with family. Some people have terrible luck with the one they're born with and others have amazing ones.
All relationships are difficult to properly maintain especially lifelong ones, but good ones definitely do exist when everyone involved tries their best.
You mean the cutest FANTASY couple. If Jack and Rose had both made it to America, Rose would leave Jack within 2 weeks when sleeping under a bridge and eating scraps got too uncomfortable for her.

Leo said that being able to play this role with Kate was comfortable because their fights didn’t effect neither Kate or him

When she goes from laughing to anger is when she stops pretending she’s in love with him. It’s actually quite amazing. “You were just some boy who made me laugh at a party once”. A lot of couples end up like that. I was her once it’s crazy.

They are both sooo incredibly good! But the ending of this scene where Leo bursts after Kate screamed blew me away. He delivered the "empty shell of a woman" line and the "why are you even married to me" so well that you literally get to feel some of what he's "feeling". This scene would have never been this powerful if it wasn't for their incredible performances, they felt like a real broken couple.

This is my favorite acting scene by him. The sadness in his eyes when she tells him she hates him is so raw and desperate. I love it so much

I don’t know what it is...but when he says “why the hell are you married to me” it just hits you like a ton of bricks. The way he can change his voice and tone like that and just break down on cue shows you how much emotion he really puts into his acting.

I wonder what Leo and Kate did after the director yelled "CUT!!" at the end of each intense scene they filmed for this movie…
Probably hugged each other or something along those lines. From what I’ve seen, they are clearly incredibly good friends, which makes sense considering how long they’ve known each other.
They prepared to scream even louder in the next intense scene, cause screaming is really good acting.
Kate probably tried to hold in her laughter when Leo was screaming at her and vice versa

Recently got heartbroken by a girl I loved and considered to be "the one". This scene immediately popped into my mind. "Empty, hollow shell of a woman" is such a perfect description. Such a strong scene, especially when you can relate.

It can be seen as the boiling over point or key line of the melodrama/tension in the scene. And it's alright, it's memorable but not oscar worthy.

Rewatched this gem of a film years later and felt in love with Leo's incredible performance all over again! The man is stupendous in his craft. This scene particularly was bril and it's almost hard to believe it's not real. Also their chemistry is great. Wish they had been in more movies together.

Perhaps. I much prefer Marriage Story as a movie but I think this was a better scene.
I think Adam Driver did an amazing job but what brings the scene down is Scar Jo...she just isn’t on any of these actors levels. Adam to me personally was on par with Leo. Or atleast in the same playing field. Scarlett brought the tension down tho.

I watched this movie today and I can't express enough how spectacular the acting of these two legends actors were. I have always been a fan of Leo d caprio. But Kate Winslet is extraordinary in this movie. I think all married couples or people who have been in a relationship for too long should watch this movie. We often feel numb and can't feel anything in a relationship. The stress, the commitment take the life out of ourselves. We forgot to live, laugh and be ourselves. But still we can't leave or we can't stay . We feel stuck and that feeling keeps killing us from inside day by day.
This movie made me really emotional and a must watch underrated movie.

This scene really speaks to me. Leo brought justice to the screen in one of the most human and satisfying temper tantrums ever filmed.
I feel for both of them but this scene really made me lean towards Frank. While they both have their issues, April really is the sick one here.
lynda campbell I would agree with you up until the point when Frank found a rubber tube and April spoke of her children as some kind of punishment award. But anyways that's what makes this movie great. Really makes you think. It's basically just two people unwilling and incapable of understanding each other.

macabregemini Uh, no. Frank promised her Paris. He promised they would move forward with their lives. Then he backed out to take an opportunity for himself. It was extremely selfish of him to do, especially when he lead her to believe that Paris was still going to happen even though he was already considering the promotion. I could say you only side with Frank because he's a man and, because as we all know, the men are always right and the women are whiny bitches.
***** He cheated on her too so idk why you even brought that up and after their fight she told him she doesn't hate him. He told her to abort the baby and she did. You can't honestly say Frank isn't to blame as well when he literally told her to abort the baby. She didn't kill herself on purpose. Killing herself was never her intention. It happened because of the abortion. Neither of them are innocent.

It doesn't matter if he got an opportunity to improve their financial life. They could have lived in France for 6th months without working at all and she said she'd get a job there. Money isn't the problem nor is it the answer. They both did some shitty things and they are both to blame. I just don't know why you're so adamant about demonizing April and making Frank the saint.

you can compare both movies, but to say that is outrageously stupid. they both were extremely well acted in such an intense situation. the level of consistency throughout both scenes are just overwhelmingly impressive in sense of a solution and/or despair

What if he wasn’t faking the pain? I think I saw an interview where someone talked about a time they tried to cry on cue, so they remembered something from their past. What if he put himself in a place where he felt such sheer emotion, it caused him to act so intensely?
