Like the murder scene at the lake in Fincher's Zodiac, this is further proof that a scene can be way more horrifying and bone chilling with absolutely no bombastic or manipulative soundtrack to let you know when you're supposed to be 'afraid' or 'shocked'. The quiet stillness and the tranquil sounds of nature, the birds singing (or in Zodiac the sound of the woodpecker), it just builds the tension and horror so subtly but makes it all the more effective. I wish more filmmakers would go this route in sequences like these.
That zodiac scene was so brilliant. Creepy af though because it is so real. I think they actually shot it where it happened for authenticity. Some ppl where upset about that.
Not just the soundtrack but also the fact that both scenes happened at day time just goes to prove that you don't need the dark to depict a horrifying scene.
@@CheefChaos he actually helped with the logistics/filming of that scene. I've driven by that lake and area so many times and whenever I see 'the spot' i just get such weird vibes. If you listen closely you can hear where the round went through her and hit the tree. Gotta love the attention to detail. This movie was a masterpiece!
That's some strength she's got to manage drowning three people. They may have been kids but everything living instinctively knows to struggle like crazy, so three in a row? I read this book and saw the movie at a time when I was a dating a girl who was clearly troubled. On antipsychotics, a pathological liar, and incredibly charismatic. @@mebeb6399 I dont know. For a whole summer she kept trying to leverage her 'illness' to get back together. I told her I would be there for her and take her to appointments, and support her etc, but I could no longer be in the relationship. This went on for about 2 months before I allowed myself to accept she was lying. (Her roommate and mother were either in in the ruse or were lied to themselves). When she realized I wasn't going to cave she basically vanished. Deleted her social media, and never contacted me again. It wasn't until 3 or so months later when a friend of her friend that we both met at a party once contacted me on Facebook and told me she was full of shit. Told her last bf she was pregnant and faked a miscarriage, made up stories of getting mugged by a girl she saw as a rival etc. Basically she had been conning people for years. I was so grateful to this girl for reaching out to me because I felt so confused by it all. I had my suspicions but it's so hard to even ask yourself 'is this person lying about something so huge?' I heard an episode of RadioLab that spoke of this guy who fell in love with a con artist. Dated her for a year before things fully unraveled. People asked him 'do you find it hard to trust others now?' And he said 'no, I find it hard to trust myself'. Kinda summed up my feelings perfectly. It's been 10 years now and I'm doing fine. Up until I saw this movie, I always thought Dicaprio was overrated because of his looks. But after watching this I have to say, he is an incredible actor. He definitely deserved more Oscars.
I teared up watching this. Its fictional, I know but how do you bear losing your child? Especially like this. I don't blame any man or even woman who loses their sanity on seeing their children lay lifeless in front of them. This is fictional, I know. But this is emotionally deep.
I had a dream my son died when he was a toddler and it terrified me for years afterward. I can't imagine losing one of my kids, but all of them, all at once. No one should ever feel anything like that, ever for any reason. Such a tremendously gut wrenching scene.
People who ask about the Oscar snubs or no nominations. We all understand Leo is the top dog. Screw those silly circle jerks of recognition. Who needs em? A little worthless metal statue? No. The real prize is that we ALL know and recognize Leo is one of the greatest actors to ever live.
That's probably one of most awful, but realistic portrayal of how this may happen. Someone you loved and trusted kills the ones you loved the most in the most mediocre day. That betrayal and pain, that's something you'll never deal with. Leonardo's character ended up the way everyone probably would. By creating an imaginary world to escape the reality.
This is EVERY parents nightmare. I don’t even know how people cope with the death of their children. It takes a really strong person I guarantee you that. I would beyond lose my mind if something like this ever happened to my children. My life would end right there. Edit: I just have to admire how amazing of an actor Leo is. Just riveting!
"You know how you call a guy whose wife died a widower? Or, if your parents die, you're an orphan. You know, there's no word for someone whose kids die. Because it's like the worst thing that could happen." - Leah to Bucky Barnes
Fitting quote I remembered, fits well to yours: - There's no word for it, you know? There's 'orphan', 'widow', 'widower'. So what do you call someone who's lost everyone? Mom, dad, sister, girlfriend, friends... A survivor, or a walking time bomb?" - Mr. Robot
I’ve been in this scenario. With my baby boy, we found him unresponsive. That moment gutted me for life. Life is never the same after this happens to you..

How has this guy only had 1 oscar. All his performances are to perfection. From this boys life , whats eatinf gilbert grape, basketball diaries (lost for words on that one) , titanic, wolf street to present. Remarkable performances
Reminds me somewhat as a folklore story we have here in Mexico, the legend of “la llorona” a woman that lived in the indigenous times before the Spanish people that found out about her husband cheating on her, so as “revenge” she drowned her three kids in the lake, then she realized what she had just done and died (there are two versions, she died because of sadness, or she died because she was so sad that decided that she would drown herself on that lake at the moment) To then haunting the streets of the entire country screaming and mourning “ay mis hijos!” (Oh, my children!)
They featured "la llorona" on an episode of the series Grimm. Every Halloween throughout different States she would take three children over 3 days and then drown them on the last day. They rescued the last 3 children taken.
Sounds like the story of Andrea Yates, who drowned her 5 kids in 2001. IIRC there's a documentary somewhere that makes the husband/father seem incredibly neglectful.
@@ScoobyDoobyDoo25 There's tons of versions, but the original one didn't have anything to do with murdered children. La Llorona was actually an omen in Tenochtitlan (Aztec Empire capital) that foretold the Spaniards were arriving soon and the Aztecs would be slaughtered and conquered. She appeared at night numerous times before the Spanish arrived and cried out "my children, your destruction is near" "Where can you go? Where can I take you so you can escape such terrible destiny?" The Aztecs believed she was the Goddess Cihuacoatl, a deity that protected the Aztec people.
There are many stories like this, one of my favourite is the ancient Greek myth of Medea, who killed her kids after her husband left her for another woman.
That was the best ending of a mind f movie ive ever seen. That scene totally struck back home into the young father I was. The acting is 100% on point. Leo has a gift to render those scenes in a human way. The way he's already rejecting reality when he rubs his daughter's feet. When he asks his wife to stop talking crazy... when he has a glimpse of reality left in him and shoots her only to realise now hes truly alone. Thats 100% how someone can beget crazy having problems distinguishing reality from fiction. When stuff like that happens to you, its very hard to take in. Especially if the perpetrator is there acting out of this world and you have to put an end to it.
@@ねこ男の子 He didnt, he feels responsible for it because he ingored his wife's mental issues ignoring her odd behaviour. If he got her help at earlier signs, children would be alive, while she might have beem treated.
This scene is so heartbreaking. I bet this clip hits harder if you are a parent yourself, what this poor dude goes through is something that nobody should ever go through. No parent should ever have to bury their child, much less find out that your own partner killed them.
This is one of the most disturbing movie scenes I’ve ever seen, it literally makes me feel ill, and I mean that as a compliment, on top of the incredible acting I think one of the things that really makes this scene unsettling is the fact that apart from the one piano note and the birds chirping the scene is dead silent, there’s no dramatic or suspenseful music playing while all of this is going on which adds to the eeriness because it makes feel more real, especially when he looks up and shouts no, that’s something that could’ve easily come across as cheesy but because of the more realistic atmosphere this scene has it feels totally believable and it sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it, and yeah, if you were a parent I’m sure the sight of all your children’s dead bodies floating in the water would be the most horrific image you could possibly imagine, I feel so sorry for him every time I see this scene, also another thing that never ceases to amaze me is how startling the gunshot is, no matter how many time I watch this movie even though I know it’s coming it shocks me every single time, I seriously do not understand why Shutter Island is widely considered one of Martin Scorsese’s lesser movies and how some people don’t like it cause I think it’s one of his best
For Years I wouldn't watch it and after I finally did I was mad at myself. I Love Leonardo and I didn't watch it because of the reviews but I should have known better!!!!!!!

I agree. Obviously wolf of wall street and inception and django unchained are amazing performances. But this is something different. Very few actors can truly express the pure pain of losing your family especially the way he did. Because not only was it tragic but he felt guilty. He should have more than one oscar
Andrews wife was showing clear signs of depression and mental illness but he didn’t feel it was too serious. So afterwards his guilt of not having sought the help she desperately needed, which lead to the death of the children and her, caused him to go insane.

Your 1000000000000% right
What's nuts is the guy in that scene actually lived on.
I had my suspicions but it's so hard to even ask yourself 'is this person lying about something so huge?'
I heard an episode of RadioLab that spoke of this guy who fell in love with a con artist. Dated her for a year before things fully unraveled. People asked him 'do you find it hard to trust others now?' And he said 'no, I find it hard to trust myself'. Kinda summed up my feelings perfectly. It's been 10 years now and I'm doing fine.
3 children? I thought it was 2 children? I’m not Mexican but I watched the curse of La Llorona.
Where can I take you so you can escape such terrible destiny?"
The Aztecs believed she was the Goddess Cihuacoatl, a deity that protected the Aztec people.
You didn't even watch it mate. Leo killed the kids himself LMAO.

My goodness, he's a brilliant actor. I felt every ounce of his pain here.
