There are a number of questions the Jocko truly isn't understanding, not how to answer the question, but he isn't understanding even what the question is.

Nobody asks it cuz its not moral and everybody should obviously not want to talk about their death, or how they feel about it. He knows it too, thats why he gets into his 'shy shell' when he asks. Its weird questions. Plus we all know and dont care to know the answers. Its either a "yes", and, well, duh...or "no", and your just a tough guy, who fears to show his fears. Because NO ONE, is not worried about dying and leaving loved ones behind. NO ONE! This has to be one of Lex’s best interviews. I feel like I would have just gotten sorry for myself when Jocko answered the questions like he did. However Lex knew this was going to happen, prepared for it and perfectly blended his style and Jocko’s.
Winning through losing is more valuable then winning. And when there's ego involved, challenge that ego and give it a chance to be humbled and shifted. Challenge being the main source of happiness. Creating the best version of yourself. So challenge yourself, and love to lose knowing you're doing something difficult and that is a win. That's what I learned among other things on this episode. Lex - "Does the old man still got it?" Jocko - "Are you talking to me?" I can't believe Lex had the balls to ask that question. I couldn't stop laughing. It's at an hour and thirty-three minutes into this interesting talk.
In my opinion, this interview is a perfect example to why Lex is among the top interviewers in the world. His questions are so specific yet overlooked and never asked from other interviewers. The leadership case study was so interesting, I had to listen to it on loop a few times! Thank you @Lex Fridman
I feel like Lex is more tense in this interview, and confrontational stance. Can’t blame him, but Jocko’s a genuine sweetheart and has a lot more wisdom to share with us. Thank you :)
I would describe WAR and the fear of DEATH as follows: When I went to war I got on a train. On this train everything was about making in through together, doing what must be done, taking no unnecessary risks. The moments I came in contact with death the fear I experienced was quickly overshadowed with making in through together, doing what must be done. After the war I got off the train on my peaceful, familiar and save station, where I got in the train five months earlier. Only then I had time for contemplating, and noticed that everything looked different.
One of the things that concern me about A.I. or other 'autonomous' weapons doing the killing is that it becomes easier for the person doing the killing to disassociate themselves from the ethics of the act. It's easy to push a button in a room and turn a blind eye to the consequences.
Both of my favorite podcasters go into this cross-over conversation. My podcast app went beserk and I felt the shockwave of this gem by just reading the host and guest names. First time that I ever actually watch a full episode of Lex and Jocko on youtube instead of just listening to the podcast. This - is - a - weird - combo! My brain spins in circles - good ...
The first three minutes of this one are the most powerful. So good to see a grateful immigrant. Welcome, Lex. You are the type of New American my father and uncle fought and bled for in wars past.
Lex, thank you for sharing at the beginning of this podcast. Thank you for loving and appreciating your adoptive country. It is a refreshing perspective compared to some of the immigration/border issues we are dealing with only 3 hours from my home in South Texas. As to this country….my elementary school years were spent in the mid-1950’s to early 1960’s. We were taught to love our country, to appreciate its unique government structure, to love our brilliant Constitution, to appreciate our founding fathers even though flawed in some areas of character. We were taught to love our free and open elections, especially the privilege of casting a secret ballot so one could not be targeted by those who wanted you to vote other than you did. We knew this was not the practice in other places. Our fathers, grandfathers, uncles fought in WW2 and we loved them for it. We suffered with them through the PTS they experienced in our homes behind closed doors. We knew freedom came to us at great personal cost. For decades, it seems that our schools have taught our young ones not to cherish these things and to be hostile toward law and order. The education against communism is gone. But listening to younger Americans like you, this older woman has hope for the future of my grandchildren. Mostly, my hope is in the God who influenced the very founding of this country. As Jordan Peterson points out so readily, our societal foundation is on Judeo-Christian principles and practices. We fail in wanting to dismiss the necessity of religion in grounding our communities in order and peace to insure ongoing prosperity of heart and life. Jesus plucked me from hopelessness and fills me with joy unspeakable as I live in His Life which He so freely brought me into over 50 years ago. May you someday know Him too. It would be the greatest capstone to your journey. ❤️
Lex saying how self critical he is to the point he hates everything he has done is so relatable. I feel confident in the things I do but looking back I often find it like I could've done this or said this to be better and it doesn't paralyze me but it makes me reflect so hard
One thing I’ve learned, being apart of multiple startups in the “The Valley,” is that a leader should detox the culture from your presence. There really isn’t another word I can think of. The product is simply a byproduct of the culture. The purpose of making your bed is to simply start your day with contrary action. Most of your day should feel like contrary action. Happiness is that feeling when you put your head down on the pillow at the end of the day and you KNOW there is nothing else you could have done to make that day better. Strive for that feeling every night and you will live a life that you love. I know this because I have lived both. When people say how hard do you train I really don’t know what they mean. I’ve been very lucky to have been pushed when I was young there is really only 1 gear. This doesn’t mean I’m stretching vigorously on Sundays but I’m doing my best to get the MOST out of everything I do. Good stuff Lex.

I can't believe Lex had the balls to ask that question. I couldn't stop laughing. It's at an hour and thirty-three minutes into this interesting talk.
Lex looks like a nerd but is black belt jui jitsu hes no wheenie
@@amirmeiti Against Jocko, you bet he is.
@@amirmeiti
Lex is legit but would fo well to NEVER roll with Jocko
@@roman5782 of course the guys weighs a lot more and is a beast.
trying to provoke jocko with a cheap shot..fail.
18:33 fully engaged stare of death
In my opinion, this interview is a perfect example to why Lex is among the top interviewers in the world. His questions are so specific yet overlooked and never asked from other interviewers. The leadership case study was so interesting, I had to listen to it on loop a few times!
Thank you @Lex Fridman
01:33:00 best moment in podcast history
When Jocko takes a shower, he doesn’t turn it on. He stares at it till it cries
I feel like Lex is more tense in this interview, and confrontational stance. Can’t blame him, but Jocko’s a genuine sweetheart and has a lot more wisdom to share with us. Thank you :)
Yeah there's periods where lex doesn't make any eye contact whilst talking for minutes at a time
I would describe WAR and the fear of DEATH as follows:
When I went to war I got on a train. Only then I had time for contemplating, and noticed that everything looked different.
jocko can make snow angels in solid concrete
Glad to see Jocko smiling in the thumbnail.
😂
I wish I could see Jocko's face while some of these questions are being struggled through.
Plain face. The sniper watches.
@@billlets5460 rofl!
God bless our veterans and all those who serve this nation and the sacrifices they have made to keep us alive
fuck yeah! Time to stop studying and take extreme ownership for not studying later on! hahahaha
Man, this interview was like oil and water.
I thought it was a good interview,though.Kind of awkward,if I'm being honest.
But I think that that was more because of Lex's interviewing style.
I liked how he didn't ask questions in a way to purposely get on Jocko's good side.
One of the things that concern me about A.I. or other 'autonomous' weapons doing the killing is that it becomes easier for the person doing the killing to disassociate themselves from the ethics of the act. It's easy to push a button in a room and turn a blind eye to the consequences.
This was intense.
Lex is the philosopher, Jocko is the soldier. Verbose v. Succint.
fascinating
Both of my favorite podcasters go into this cross-over conversation. My podcast app went beserk and I felt the shockwave of this gem by just reading the host and guest names. First time that I ever actually watch a full episode of Lex and Jocko on youtube instead of just listening to the podcast. This - is - a - weird - combo!
My brain spins in circles - good ...
It felt like lex was a kid asking a grownup a bunch of questions lol
Ha I felt like it was the other way around
Him sitting across from Jocko,it does comes across that way.
I didn't get this inpression at all John Paul.
I noticed that towards the middle and end of the podcast, both seemed to be having a much more comfortable time talking with each other.
Jocko should have brought Echo with him for this one. It would have flowed so much better.
Two Giants!!! Hope when the mat time comes, someone is filming it so we can all have a master class!!! Another fantastic podcast Lex!!!
Greatest intro. Of all time.
The first three minutes of this one are the most powerful. So good to see a grateful immigrant. Welcome, Lex. You are the type of New American my father and uncle fought and bled for in wars past.
Just listening to this guy makes me want to lift weights
Jocko steps in, and it's Jocko's channel now
The end cracked me up "Could be sooner than you think"
Your preamble was first class, great interview too, keep up the great work

Lex: are you afraid of death?
Jocko: No.
this talk was epic. omfg. love how simple his answers are at times... sometimes, that's all you can just say.
"fun"
“They are all manifestations of the human spirit, longing to strive for a better world”. You are a great American Lex.
