I relate to what Doug says about how visual art isn't nearly as much of a social or scene-building medium as music is, but what's interesting is I think it's the opposite for my kids. Their friends all seem to do art, all seem to want to share their art online, and that's what draws them together way more than their taste in music. And I don't think my kids are out of the norm. I think it's somehow changed for this generation for whatever reason.
@@slacktoryrecords4193 One depressing thing to me is that so much of the art seems to be "fan art." I realize that's a place to start, but it would be the equivalent of if Treepeople were a cover band or something.
@@cominginsecond Yes that’s exactly right. “Fan art” is plaguing my other love-older movies released on Blu-ray- currently too. And it’s *bad* fan art.
as an art kid, yeah I totally get that. I didn’t grow up in that time, so i don’t know if it’s the same or different but I definitely know more art kids who share art with their friends, but not as many music or band kids. However, now I am getting into music and have been playing with some of my friends 😋
Hes got a very sympathetic voice, full of heart. I love this voice, even when he doesnt sing. Maybe this fulness manifests in his genius music, how can this man say hes not a good guitarist?! I think hes very agreeable to be around...
"My brother and sister both went to lots of colleges and became professors." Yeah but YOU'RE DOUG MARTSCH. You wrote classic after classic record. To me that's an equal tradeoff.
Yeah but yr Doug Martsch...You play incredibly fluid complex parts made to sound simple...Also you play progressions that sound like trademark riffs, unlike any other. Don't give me this punk rock bulls$%! Lol lol love this guy forever now, going to see him solo next week at a private gig. So excited!
I'm not kidding when I say he's one of the all time greatest musicians to ever live. Love ya Doug
This guy is a brilliant song writer 🎉 it’s obvious he was born to do it. how lucky we are that he did! 🤗❤️🎶
It was time there was a channel dedicated to Built to Spill, I’ll watch its growth with great interest
Have you checked out Built To Spill Tapes at all?
R.E.M. on Letterman changed lives.

I think that’s true, and it’s unfortunate for music, broadly speaking, that this has become the norm.

@@cominginsecond a lot of bands just start playing songs they like then move into their own stuff, so it's kind of the same thing

Love the interview and great topic! Doug seems so normal and it's so inspirational to me.
I wish my mom was like Doug, also, cool that Doug got a song written about him back then

Would love to see Doug's drawings (and maybe have one in the collection?!)
For some reason? Early R.E.M. is the shit.
Bernie (his mom) is awesome!
