  • For the 25th anniversary of Built to Spill’s astonishing third album, Perfect From Now On, Doug Martsch joins us for a detailed look at how the record was made. After Built to Spill released their first two records on indie labels, they ended up signing with Warner Bros. for their third album. Signing with a major label left Martsch feeling conflicted but inspired to experiment in the studio and was determined to make an ambitious album that deserved to be heard by a larger audience. Martsch’s original vision was to change the lineup for the third time and play the majority of the instruments himself with Peter Lansdowne on drums. After reconnecting with producer, Phil Ek, in Seattle, they recorded the first version of the album but were dissatisfied with the results. Martsch then decided to bring bassist, Brett Nelson, back, along with new drummer, Scott Plouff, and record the album a second time. After Phil Ek drove with the tapes from Seattle to Boise, they found that the tapes had been damaged. The band ended up recording the album a third time and brought in collaborators, Brett Netson, John McMahon and Robert Roth to help fill out the arrangements. From envisioning a classic rock sound to the difficulties of analog recording in the nineties to combining ideas to make collage-style songs to stealing lyrics from his wife to the never-ending quest for perfection, we’ll hear the stories around how the album came together.

Without exaggeration, this is my favorite album of all time. Thank you for this.
I really wish Doug would get Phil Ek back behind the controls.

While going to college, I would sit in my car at night, just to get away from everyone, and I would listen to this album on repeat as a form of meditation and therapy.
Banging on the steering wheel to the wonderful build ups, and singing along.
I can understand why Doug's so critical about some parts, there's always more that you can do to improve something, and I'm pretty glad in some ways that he was compelled to re-record everything so many times. But damnit man, the album is way better than it needed to be.
I feel like this album really encompasses some of the finest guitar layering.
It's to the point that you can always hear something new on each listen, and the tracks are NEVER too repetitive,
Oh and the drums on this album are just really perfect for each song.
Randy... the first few notes are so awkwardly comforting, that I'm instantly drawn in against my will.
And the long songs made of multiple smaller songs, while much more work to combine, are exponentially better than a bunch of short songs that might not stand up on their own.
Untrustable is a wonderful closer to the album, the "simple" 2nd part of the song is an uplifting change in tone from the rest of the album. And I really enjoy the transitions after this. The fact that he called it circus music made me laugh, it's kinda true, but it still sounds unique and interesting.
Anyways, I'll stop now, thank you for putting this together.

Dug is such a great guy. So humble but is an absolute beast on the guitar. Had to pleasure to speak to him after a show and he's as genuine as it gets. Thanks Kelsey for getting me into BTS

I still remember when I first heard this record. It was spring 1997 and i had just been through a terrible break up and a good friend of mine (Randy) picked me up and had the cassette playing. Being an indie musician myself I instantly loved it. I'd heard the other records but this was different, more drawn out and spacey. We went to Fire Island and I managed to cheer up. Also on this trip I first heard that "not being stupid" song. Thanx Randy K.

Scott Plouf is brilliant on this album. Not an errant or unnecessary hit on the entire album. Compostionally from a drumming standpoint this album is perfect from start to finish.
Plouf's subtle choices in shifting where his snare hit lands in relation to the main counts depending on the song adds an energy and/or subdued quality without being too laid back in the pocket.
Randy Describes Eternity has a snare hit almost ahead of the count countering the slower tempo and monodynamic unaccented ride cymbal. It creates a tension in that simple beat that creates an anticipation and is actually somehat difficult to play unless you understand what he's doing.
The tendency is the hold that snare hit back behind the beat and to accent the pulse on the ride cymbal -- but do that and the entire feel changes.
One of the best albums of the decade.

I totally agree. I remember when this album came out. I first heard it in a car on cassette mid song (don't remember which song) but I thought the drums were a bit stiff. It only took another 30 sec or so to be won over by the "unstiff" music. It all blends so nice.

The Beatles song Doug couldn't remember when he was talking about Stop the Show is Good Morning Good Morning from Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band..
After awhile u start to smile now u feel cool.
Then u decide to take a walk by the old school.
Nothing has changed it stays the same.
I've got nothing to say but it's ok.
    Good morning good morning

When you realize that the whole process of creating good quality profound music it's probably the #1 hardest of them all in the world of arts. Your simplicity in admitting your downs and flaws it's very honest and really nice to listen to. It shows your good character as a person and that's simply amazing.
