Late to the party but I couldn't agree more! I saw this on HBO Reverb as a teen in the late 90s and I love it to this day. Am so grateful to have discovered this band (and Caustic Resin)
Good fucking Lord!! Built To Spill was the best band ever back then, and still hold the record in my book. Wow, to be at this show. . . The original BTS.
I’m so spoiled that in these live performances Doug sacrifices the final verse (“this history lesson…”) for the solo jam. It’s my favorite part of the song actually, that soft quiet interlude after a frenetic couple minutes…wondering if there is a live show out there where he does combine the two
I will spend the rest of my life looking for a band as awesome as BTS, and will never find it. This is a sweet fucking video. Saw them play in Boston last year. Incredible show.
I am so glad you had the opportunity to show the world what you could do, all of you, especially Doug of course since he was the force of will and inspiration that led you all there. RIP my capable, humble friend and thank you for giving me the right to say, The best memories I have of you are moments when no one else was there. The world could use you now more than ever and I truly hope enough of you rubbed off on Brett, myself and the rest to make a difference that will help dissolve this illusion so we can finally see the way. I WILL keep my promise!
Saw em in Memphis about 10 years ago at the Young Ave Deli and they were fucking awesome. Heavy as fuck live. They even looked like a metal band. I mean, they didnt sound heavy like a metal band....heavy in the sense that every note they played carried a lot of weight. They kept that crowd movin!
FFFFFFFFFUCKKKKKKKKK 100 % agree. Ben Gibbard said in an interview that DCFC’s first few albums (particularly Something about Airplanes and We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes) were heavily influenced by Built to Spill.
Hi, have you the performance on VHS or DVD? Or do you know where i could find it.. Would you share it ?? Cause i've been looking for this for a long time... Thanks,
@wyndorf03 Yeah i agree, the early ep's and 'This is a long drive...' all had that feel of being a stream of consciousness, but now 'good news' and 'we were dead' have more of a structured feel to them. Just didn't want you to outcast those from modest mouses sound
I used to incessantly plan. Plan, plan, plan. Brought up hearing of this 'Plan'. Brought the plan up too much to some. :/ Got me nowhere. Nowhere I tell you!!! Takes two, or more, to implement the 'Plan'...So now I say: "Fuck the plan", and just listen to the beauty of the perfectly unplanned plan they call Built to Spill...*-*
My mom took me to see them in San Diego, I think it was this show. Never heard the band before seeing them, was def for a few days after. But was also a life long fan been listening to them ever since. Going on 15 years love me some built to spill
My thought exactly. Such a shame, I have to beat friends (all musicians like myself, almost all junkies for modest mouse too and knowing they were largely treepeople and BTS Inspired) over the head endlessly for their owb good so they can go 6 months later. "You were right man, sorry I'm so stubborn" another month "they're probably one of my favorite bands now" quotes are direct from my best friend lol. Different style but I find most people who dig this stuff love em, just as underrated maybe more is pinback. Incredible band, more bass centric and less guitar but so good.
No way he just improv'd that solo like that I'm pretty sure that was improv considering how Doug usually does things but holy shit that was an amazing solo
I remember watching this live in my college apartment. BTS Pavement and The Delusions on the bill. They were interviewing Elliott Smith and Lou Barlow on the show too
@MeSh479 its similar in the sound of their old albums and yeah all MM cds are different and MM are good because the lyric and the singers are awesome.... a MM and BTS Cds would great!
i wonder what kind of distortion/OD Doug uses for rythim parts. I know he uses lace sensor pick-ups and i bet a velcro-like fuzz pedal for the solos (IE big muff). But since his rythim part sounds saturated yet organic...
One of the greatest solos ever. Every single note so beautiful.
i've seen close to 1,000 concerts and Doug is still one of the best guitarists i've been lucky enough to see live very underated
@@marcusfoto how many years did close to 1000 concerts take? 20 years at least, right?
@@hayleyb467 yes over 20 years... I started seeing shows when I was 16 and I'm now 42
@@marcusfoto badass! I'm the same age & have been to roughly 300 concerts. STRFKR tops my wish list. Ever seen Phish?
@@hayleyb467 yea I've seen Ph 60 times most of any band, BTS I've seen 5-6times I think
Randomly heard this song while at a pizza place. One of the best random music discoveries ever.
Every single note in that solo is absolutely perfect
Flipping amazing. My dad used to play basketball with the singer at the ymca in Boise lol
Yup, Doug is a huge basketball fan. He's kind of known for playing a lot of games around Boise.
Watched this on HBO when it aired originally. It instantly changed my musical taste and lots more
Late to the party but I couldn't agree more! I saw this on HBO Reverb as a teen in the late 90s and I love it to this day. Am so grateful to have discovered this band (and Caustic Resin)
back to when I was young and happy
This is the song you hear while you descend to heaven!!
holyyyyy shit
just discovered them while listenin to pavement...
damn, great upload dude
Me too!
Pavement is diet built to spill and modest mouse is off brand built to spill (all 3 are good bands)
Good fucking Lord!! Built To Spill was the best band ever back then, and still hold the record in my book. Wow, to be at this show. . . The original BTS.
I didn't realize these guys jammed like this live. It's really great
The way I describe this band too my friends is by telling them that BTS is basically the widespread panic of 90's indie rock
Robert R. Dude...... I love this
Those Washington bands were natural jam bands, man. Good times for music.
no no no no no no Not WSP could not be further from them

that k pop band?
@@resmarted no, Alex Gianascoli. Look him up. He opened for BTS a few years back.
I just found out about these guys. I've had to listen to this song so many times, it's undeniably very catchy/rockin/groovin.
one of the best solo in the history
UNBELIEVABLE. 1000 thumbs up.

My absolute favorite Doug guitar solo here. Glad this finally made it to youtube. Thanks a ton for the upload!
MOdest Mouse and BtS are equally great they both sound similar in a way but every modest mouse Cd sounds different
I love the bass playing
Thanks for uploading! I've been looking for the rest of this show

They still put on a great show too! Been a great live band since the beginning
goddamn this was BTS at their prime.
1:43 goosebumps
How was this 14 yeas ago? These guys should've been a lot bigger in the 90's. But I'm kind of glad they weren't.
this song reminds me of You Can Play These Songs With Chords

i love how he uses feedback SO MUUCH
Thanks lads! So good!!
Now THIS is music.
fuck man, this brings me back. Good shit
best music show HBO Time Warner ever produced was Reverb, this performance is proof positive

Trust in the Lord JESUS CHRIST with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Trust JESUS CHRIST, make Him the Lord of your life !
Fuck you.
I love this band but they look pretty boring in this video
Sometimes I am glad I discover great bands in my mid-twenties. If I had sooner, I just wouldn't have been able to comprehend its greatness.
I saw them in Chicago in 2012 and I almost fainted so doug gave me his set list. They are our gems!
WHERE WAS I IN 1999!!!!!fuuck!
+driver valentine I had to be talked into going to see them back then and I still thank that friend for making me go

That solo changed my life.
Absolutley brilliant!!!
BTS was Modest Mouse's Mystical Guide
Nice solo , BTS Keep it like a secret is the best album!
Amazing❤
wish i had hbo back in 99
Holy shit!
Doug is a little special, but Built to Spill is in my top 10 of all time. They need to get the whole band back together.
@MeSh479 its similar in the sound of their old albums and yeah all MM cds are different and MM are good because the lyric and the singers are awesome.... a MM and BTS Cds would great!
I love both bands but i think its the fact that MM isnt as tight and structured at BTS that makes me love them more. Much more exciting and pure.
Captures the 90s flashback euphoria

Daddy O overdrive during this time, could be a big muff too

AMOEBA REPERZEEEEEEEENNNTTTT !!!
what's it matter if it does sound similar there is footage of them at the same show covering each other's songs their both fucking legends
I just think he meant the squeeling sound where Jim has the slide over the strings. Otherwise, it sounds absolutely nothing like Mechanical Birds...
