  • Today we are looking at the new Motu M2 2x2 USB-C Audio Interface. This thing offers 32-bit floating point, 192khz sample rate, +60dB of gain, an EIN of -129.5dBu, Loopback functionality for podcasters and streamers, an On/Off button, and individual phantom power on/off buttons per channel. Pretty much, this is the best audio interface under $200 that I’ve ever come across.

Your content has been super useful to me over the last few weeks, it's helped more than you can imagine. I had a full podcasting setup with PodMics, stands, 7506s, cables, and a Rodecaster - but circumstances have changed, and I needed to be ultra lightweight for travel.
I have decided, in large part thanks to your content, to go for 2x AT BPHS1 headsets, running into a Motu M2 - into my laptop. I was itching for a SD MixPre3ii but it was super hard to justify the extra $$$ for a pre-revenue podcast, especially when my mics of choice are not super high fidelity anyway. I've been able to get my setup down from over 8kg + laptop to under 1.5kg + laptop. That's a MASSIVE haircut when you consider the ever decreasing carryon luggage options available. Once I get it all up and running I might make a short video about it.
    Keep on keeping on dude!

      Hi!
I'm looking to get an Audio Interface for recording Audiobooks and Voiceovers. This is a home set-up with a Windows 10 laptop, in an untreated room. So, Can use only Dynamic Mics like SM58 or Rode Procaster. CLEAN PREAMP GAIN and LOW NOISE is prime requirement.
I've shortlisted the Audient ID4 MK II and the MOTU M2. Both are at same price here in Mumbai, India. The additional mic input in the M2 is useful in case i decide to work on two person narration or interviews.
      Which would you recommend?
      Thanks in advance!

Thanks so much for this review. You got this review out so quickly, and I really appreciate that. I was about to buy an $800 interface, but this one (the MOTU M4, to be specific) has the features I really want (including an input monitor mix dial) that none of the other "entry level" interfaces have. Given the sound quality and features, I would say this device is "prosumer" not "entry level."

I have the Motu M2. Great preamp, great interface, and just great. My main and really only complaint about it is that it doesn't have enough control. Only a gain dial, and that's it, no mute button or anything. But if you don't need that, I definitely recommend paying an extra $50 and getting this over a Scarlett Solo or something like that.

Encoders and connectors on my MOTU Ultralight mk4 are wobbling too, but never miss a connection or skip values, so i guess it is some specific about their encoders and potentiometers manufacturer. I'am using my Ultralight mk4 every day for more than a year without any problem, so this wobble is not a fragility. Another thing which you can add as missing is that there is no lock on XLR. You can find it on their higher grade models.
I believe preamps and DAC/ADC on M2 are the same as on my ultralight mk4 and they are best ones i have ever used. Previously, a have used a Focusrite Saffire Pro 14, Scarlett 2i2 mk2 and Steinberg UR22 mk2. This one outperforms all of them easily. Nobrainer for less than $200.

After thinking about it for month and month, I finally pulled the trigger on the MOTU M4. I was thinking a lot about wether I need The M4 or if I should get a full out 4 channel interface, and in the end, the M4 would give me some features, that I really like. The line ins3 and 4, which I could use with - say - two DBX 286S, if I should ever need the additional mic inputs, or maybe for a stereo input. The Mix dial is another thing I sometimes love to use. But the completely digital controls for all inputs and outputs is the most important feature for me. I like hardware controls for fast changes, but I like digital controls for giving me the most control. Digital controls for the knobs is a genius move by MOTU and I really hope, more companies will pick that up in the future. Your review supported me in my decision process in terms of the sound and for that, I thank you! Just one thing: In my books loop back isn’t exactly preferable on stream. At least, it doesn’t fix the problem many people have, leveling their audio correctly.

  • @patbollin

I’m trying out the M4, partly because of this stellar review of the M2. I haven’t been able to find a negative review, actually. I was a little concerned about the loose knobs and XLR ports that you mentioned as one of its only negatives, but the unit I received doesn’t have that issue. The XLR ports are tight and the knobs are sturdy with a nice resistance to them. I wonder if they fixed the issue since the release date based on feedback. Anyway, thanks for the review.

You probably have a V2 which is made in china with slightly newer components, your MOTU software should say firmware version 2.0.* which means it's a v2, it would say 1.0.* if it was a v1 (assembled in USA, slightly older components). The audio RTL is a bit lower on M4 compared to my 2i2 2nd gen.. 6.8 vs 9 ms. This difference though small is perceptible. However I can get the virtual instrument latency on the 2i2 to be lower than the M4 due to the 2i2 allowing for more sample size options (3.25 vs 5.33 ms). This difference is virtually imperceptible, however it is nevertheless disappointing.

Edit: so my use case would be (1) recording a grand piano in a small studio; (2) recording a nicer grand piano in a large chapel hall; and (3) recording choir ensemble singing in the same large chapel hall. The microphones are a pair of rode M5.
Edit 2: the use cases I have seem to point me to the cheaper version with just 2 inputs (that is, 2i2 and M2) but I put the 4-in 4-out versions here so the comparison against iD14 is more of apple-to-apple comparison.

However, the audio input latency is significantly lower on the M4 and therefore I am getting 2.2 ms less audio RTL with it. With my setup (an i7 laptop) I can get the audio RTL to be as low as 6.8 ms compared to 9 ms on the 2i2. In terms of virtual instrument latency, I can get the 2i2 to go as low as 3.25 ms (96kHz @ 104 sample size) while the m4 can go as low as 5.33 ms. In practical terms the difference between 3.25 ms and 5.33 ms is practically imperceptible. The audio round trip latency difference between 6.8 ms and 9 ms is more significant.
