    In this video I review the MOTU M2 audio interface and compare it with the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. I demo the features and provide audio samples for both the MOTU M2 and the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. The MOTU M2 is a budget interface with two XLR and 1/4” inputs for microphone, guitar, or line. It also has MIDI inputs as well. The MOTU M2 also has a screen which acts as a meter for input and output monitoring. The Focusrite has similar ins and outs and also features the “Air” feature for the preamps. This video contains audio samples - vocals, guitar, and spoken word to help you decide which is right for you.

      @@angelbenitez8035 You could turn off the interface before turning off your monitors, but the sudden loss of signal will create a pop in your monitors which could be damaging to them. The safest practice is to turn off your monitors before you turn off the interface.

    Thank you Sanjay! This review video was one of the reason which helped me to buy the Motu M2 when I was confused to choose between Motu M2 and Focusrite Scarlet 2i2. Motu M2 is my first audio interface and I'm using it for the past 6 months now. Below are some of the things from my experience with the interface ,I like to share here if anyone is looking for .
    1.The interface is sturdy.
    2.The colourful readings on the interface is much helpful as a newbie in music recording. If you are new to recording , you should really consider getting this.
    3.The software "Performer Lite" which comes with the MotuM2 had some bugs/issues . But I must say this, the MotuM2 Tech team was so active and helpful and they solved the issues with the DAW. Their response was so fast . Kudos to their team!! In fact you will also receive Ableton live DAW. But I personally liked the "Perfomer Lite" DAW and I'm using the same DAW for the last 6 months.
    4.I use a dynamic mic for recording my audio since my room is not acoustic treated .You will notice much noise once the gain is kept more than 2"0" Clock. And I guess this is normal with every interface .
    5.Finally regarding the sound quality. I find it Top Notch and there is no latency issues .Just go for it!!!I love this interface!

    I have the Focusrite 2i2, and am looking at the M2 now. A common issue with the Focusrite 2i2 that people (including myself) have is that it outputs one stereo channel (i.e left or right) as louder than the other. I was also recommended the Motu M2 from a worker at an electrical music equipment store, and he previously owned a Focusrite 2i2 and said the audio quality improvement into the Motu M2 was definitely noticeable

    Just a word of warning. For nvidia card users please use the studio drivers and not the game ready drivers. I had constant issues with audio drop out and crackle but once I experimented with different studio drivers my issues went away. There is also a tool called latencymon which helps pinpoint the source of any drop outs or delay.

    MOT🦄 has always been a serious company with excellent hardware. The first digital sound card that I began working with was a MOTU 828 MKII interface and I loved it's performance, back in 2003. I still miss that awesome FireWire card.
    It's present day upgrade of the 828 MKIII is yet another blazing interface, kills most competetors in it's range.
    And this one here M2 really looks no less a card that means business, even in this low end range.

    Hey Brother thanks for doing this review. You know I've had the Motu M2 since around June. This is definitely my favorite interface. I had the second generation Scarlett 2i2, and the only reason why I had to look elsewhere was because after 2 years I stopped hearing sound out of my left headset, and Focusrite would not replace it. Great video!!

    • @HurveyJones
      @HurveyJones 3 года назад

      @@SanjayC My first favorite feature is Performer light. It is a DAW, and it is super easy and sounds amazing. I've already owned UVI workstation, but they have a different UVI workstation that will get your attention. The first default sound is the piano. Yes, so crisp, and looking at the interface you can actually see how much sound is coming out of the right side, and how much sound is coming out of the left side.
      There are a lot of people who sample. Well, for your own personal use, you can sample right off of youtube. That's right, full songs. But like I said for personal use, because we don't want any one to be sued.
      Also, the M2 easily configures to your DAW. All in all, you can just set it and forget it.
      But, wait, what if you are concerned about saving power, or protecting this great interface? You can actually turn if off in the back, and turn it back on when you are ready to use it.
      It is a no brainer, and I will go as far to say that this is a Scarlett killer! And if you need more outputs, you can always get the M4.
      Thank you Sanjay C for allowing me to review this product on your page. I absolutely love this, and will continue to use it.
      One thing I will do today, is hook up my bass guitar to it, however I know it will be great because I've hooked my microphone to it, and it was so amazing!!

    I was lucky to snag the M4 back in early spring, and so far I’m really satisfied with it. I really could use the extra inputs, thus the M4 instead of the M2. I’m still gonna need some time with it, especially since I just got back a refreshed MBP (late-2013) with replacement battery and a faster SSD (the original crashed back in June). I use Logic and it’s a bit snappier with the SSD, so I’ll be testing out the latency with the M4. I plan to do the same with Ableton, when I have the time. • @KazKasozi
      @KazKasozi 3 года назад +19

      @ted smith it is a function that allows the interface to be used simultaneously by more than one program. For example if you are recording a lesson of a DAW or live streaming a performance with programs like OBS or Ecamm Live. A sound interface with a loop back feature would allow you to easily record the sound output from your DAW as well as taking a direct microphone input into say OBS and also record the system sound from a player like VLC or iTunes. For online lessons and live streaming this is brilliant.

    Wish I'd seen this earlier, the MOTU M4 is still in stock some places. It would be interesting to see a comparison of how the Loopback features on the Scarlett 4i4 and either MOTU model compare. Which one is better optimized? Do they have the same or different features? Both have 2 channels for loopback and that's all I can really tell looking at specs and manuals.

  • @SpaceCowboy57
    @SpaceCowboy57 3 года назад +5

    I had some issues with my 2nd gen Scarlett solo and the 4i4 I replaced it with, so I wanted to try a different brand, and needed more input options. I went with the MOTU 8pre and am happy so far. The mic preamps have less gain, but it's still enough. A nice touch on both the MOTU 8pre and the M2 are the individual phantom power and pad buttons on each preamp channel. The air feature on Scarlett products is cool, but you can compensate for not having it with a plugin.

  • @jjrusy7438

    Great info. I have a 1st gen 2i4 and in the w/e 6 years or so i have had it, the most important feature that i also use by far the most(so much that the pot is shot and i have to replace it soon) is the blend of the DAW playback and direct input as i build my tracks. I do a lot of ad-lib and i have to sync in realtime to existing tracks. If the MOTU had that, i think i would try it, but as of now, i intend to get another scarlett with that monitor balancing option. I input from a mixer, so the ring LED's are ok for setting levels, since i have the meters on the mixer as well. I don't have to worry about overloading like when directly plugging in. The rings dont show you that you are getting close as well as any normal meter does and for the few times i used direct, they kind of suck lol. My mixer has compressors which would be a REALLY nice thing on an interface since it is acting like a 2ch mixer.
    edit: maybe i should check out an M4...

      I have the first generation 2i4 also. I bought it used but I don't think it was more than a year old and he still had the carton. My first disappointment with most gear where I'm counting on microphone input is the weak gain. Not just the 2i4. Generally I get next to nothing until about 12 o'clock and then it all comes on at once beyond that so it's a waste of half the dial and hard to set smoothly. The spec for the 2i4 is 50 dB for mic gain. It seems like I need it all especially for dynamic mics (Sennheiser e945 w 2 mV/Pa sensitivity.)
      My controls also seem to have developed scratchiness but maybe because it goes months without use for recording.

    I think the MOTU sounds better for spoken word, but for instruments and vocals (when using the AIR option) the Scarlett sounds better to me. Add to that the software included, and I think the Scarlett is better choice. However, as someone else mentioned, the Scarlett's volume knob does start to crackle after a while, and the meters on the MOTU do look great.

    • @CliffinAZ
      @CliffinAZ 2 года назад +1

      @@zerotoninemusic5957 As far as judging by ears go, it’s such a personal choice. With any of these RUclips comparisons, opinions on which sound better are so varied… It’s hard to tell from a RUclips video alone. I think for a non-biased comparison of sound, you’d also have to do the comparison blind so that expectations wouldn’t play into it.
      I’ve also seen a lot of reviews from people who switched from Focusrite to Motu saying that that they were impressed by how much better sounding it is. I haven’t seen a single reviewer saying that they were dissatisfied because the Focusrite sounded better (although like any large set of reviews for an interface, some were unhappy for other reasons). This would make me think that more people prefer the Motu in a direct sound comparison. Obviously that’s not a very reliable or statistically sound indicator of opinions though.
      I guess for myself, the most important test will come when my M4 arrives. It’s replacing my Scarlett 2i2 which I’ve had for 5 years (which broke through user error-it got dropped and a pin in the USB port snapped). That’s probably an unfair comparison however, as my 2i2 was first generation, and Focusrite has improved the units since then.

      The Solo will suffice if you only need the one mic...... I use one mic recording my non powered acoustic guitar and the other output is used for my electric guitar. When I am not working on music and just using my pc, I end up using the mic for communicating with my girlfriend Cortana! She is supper feisty!!!! 🤣🤣🤣

      @@SanjayC I'm doing awesome sanjay. We are having the worst climate in the last 10 years in South Tamilnadu. I am about 8kms from sea shore. It has been constantly raining in the morning and being sunny in the evening. It's getting a lot of people sick. Everybody is panicking whether it's corona or normal fever.

    Hi Sanjay, thanks for your review of the Motu M2! Question please. I recently bought the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 3rd Gen audio mixer for $229. Do you think the comparable Motu M4 mixer for $219 is "better" than the the Scarlett 4i4 in terms of feature set and audio quality? The Scarlett 4i4 does have a Loopback feature via the Focusrite Control app so I don't know if that makes any difference to you (the Scarlett 2i2 doesn't have that, I don't think). Also the Scarlett 4i4 has the "Air" feature. Anyway, I'm within the return policy period for my Scarlett purchase so I can exchange for the Motu M2 or M4 units. But unfortunately, both of those Motu mixers are out of stock and back ordered everywhere, so maybe this is a moot point? I'm using the Shure SM58 mics and the Audio Technica AT2005 mics (both dynamic mics) so I don't know if that makes any difference. But I notice if I crank up the gain dial on the Scarlett 4i4 mixer to maximum, there is positively a noticeable humming/hissing background noise. If I crank up the gain dial to maximum on the Motu mixer, will it produce the same amount of background humming/hissing noise compared to the Scarlett mixer? Your thoughts on this?

      That is due to headphone resistance. Use 150+ OHM headphones.

    15 days ago I purchased a Scarlett 2i2. After a few hours of use I realized that I could hear a light "click" regularly. So I pushed the volume of the gain to the maximum to hear better. Yes, there was indeed a noise, a regular click, a bit like a metronome.
    So I asked for the audio interface to be replaced. As soon as the new 2i2 arrived I did the same tests. Same results (click, click, click).
    I tested both 2i2 with two different computers, a Mac Mini M1 running Monterey and a MacBook Pro 2014 running Big Sur. I used the MacBook Pro on battery power to avoid possible noises that could be caused by problems related to the electrical network (which I don't have anyway). I plugged my headphones into the monitor output, so I could hear the sound directly from the card, without going through the computer. I plugged different cables and different instruments and microphones in the inputs (one at a time) and I pushed the gain to the maximum with and without the activation of the instrument option (inst). The "click" was still very obvious.
    I contacted Scarlett and the problem was not solved, they totally deny that their product can have this kind of problem (although I found on the internet other users with similar problems).
    So I returned the second 2i2 and my MOTU M2 is coming tomorrow.
    I will probably never buy Focusrite products again!

      Shame, I own Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, and Windows 10 is giving big issues with it now. I will miss my baby. It's so good, but I think it's either Windows 10 finally causing issues or my unit lived well since 2009

      You can either get an audio interface with lots of inputs (more expensive option) or get a mixer and connect it to an interface with at least two inputs (like the ones in this video)

    Hello Sanjay! I really love your videos. They are very informative and helpful. I would like to ask your opinion on what first audio interface i should buy. My choices are, Scarlett 2i2, Evo 4, SSL2, and this MOTU M2. I'm really having a hard time since it's my first time ever buying one and I don't want to make a decision that I'll regret later on. If you have other suggestions other than my choices, I would gladly look into it. Thank you in advance!!!
