16 knots max speed really does suggest this is not meant to be a combat vessel. It's too slow for everything. So it might really be a research vessel intended to test new technologies. But it's kinda crazy to build an entire >15000 tons flat top just for experiments. It's like that stealthy corvette size ship that was also built as a test bed. Really goes to show just how much resources China can command today.

The Chinese yards are churning out interesting prototypes faster than peas popping out of a pod! As a potential drone carrier, this might be a great system, and one has to wonder just how fast China could build bigger vessels in any case of national urgency? The more prototypes they construct, the greater the amassed depth of operational knowledge China gains.
In the last few decades China has become the biggest producer of commercial shipping in the world while the US has let it's ship building capacity rot away to nearly nothing. The US only has three dedicated shipyards devoted to building large naval warships while the Chinese have half a dozen plus dozens of the aforementioned commercial yards that could be repurposed quickly if necessary. Note also that the Chinese are building up their navy while the US is simply maintaining theirs - every new ship that China builds adds to their fleet strength while every new ship that the US builds simply replaces an existing one.
@@rags417 "while the Chinese have half a dozen plus dozens of the aforementioned commercial yards that could be repurposed quickly if necessary." Guess why the production of supertankers since 2022 has dropped massively...
The size, low speed and low freeboard (which suggests there is no hangar) point towards a second line role. Two options occur to me: 1. It's a multi role drone carrier with helicopter capability similar in concept to the Damen design that Portugal is now building, and which the Portuguese navy is referring to as a multi role drone carrier/science vessel. 2. It's an aviation support vessel for South China Sea bases and the Coast Guard. It does not need a hangar to achieve this role - many support vessels worldwide do not permanently embark aircraft, but can temporarily transport them on the flight deck. The distances across the SCS are low enough to make this feasible. Bonus option 3. It's a prototype for a modern "escort carrier" that, like its WW2 predecessors, can be built quickly in any yard and rapidly boost the flight deck capacity of the PLAN and Coast Guard at relatively short notice. But I don't think this option is very likely. I prefer options 1 and 2.

Very good. Instead of relying of advance marines or soldiers rushing for the beaches , these carriers with all its complements of drones, helicopters etc will be a great forward forces to clear the beaches or beachheads. After clearing by thousands of drones the soldiers can move in safely. Great concept to have such a carrier .
This ship fits well with China’s high priority on dominating the emerging low altitude aviation industry … Planes and drones with electric motor driven props for vertical takeoff & landing plus gas powered props & wings for long distance performance. Small batteries because electric motors are powered for only 1 minute regardless of the flight distance. And then there are the copters (quad copters, helicopters, chinook style copters … both manned and unmanned … both cargo payloads and passengers). You don’t need a long runway with expensive air launch & retrieval gear. Instead of the hundreds of baby flat tops that played a crucial role in WW2, China could pump these out at the rate Liberty ships were produced.
One more reason for prioritizing many cheap baby flat tops vs a few big carriers … the eggs are not all in a few baskets (very difficult to defend against concentrated attack that focuses overwhelming force on 3 targets). With 100 baby flat tops, there will be many that survive.
I don't see any elevators. If it isn't a drone carrier or a Darkstar project, then my guess is that we are looking at a floating fuel station for helicopters.
I wonder what it would be used for. Training new sailor recruits to prepare them for service on the other three main carriers? Drone or helicopter launching ship?

@@douginorlando6260 No worries. China doesn't have to fight the US in the middle of the Pacific. But anywhere within 2000km of China's coast, roughly west of Guam, the US has no chance of winning. Another possibility is a transfer station between the mainland and Taiwan. Military helicopters and cargo drones would shuttle between the ship and Taiwan in support of an amphibious landing. Some air vehicles would use the ship for refueling/recharging as they shuttle between the mainland and Taiwan. China has made low flying air vehicles such as delivery drones a priority. The recent drone exhibition showcased cargo drones using electric motor props only for vertical take off and landing and a different fuel powered prop like a regular aircraft. China sees this as a major commercial evolution of aviation … with serious military advantages. The ship would also be a base to provide continuous air cover for an amphibious landing including drones that drop off robo-wolf fire teams at key locations many km inland from the amphibious landing zone. The air Calvary of the future will likely be 80% drones & semi autonomous ground robots and 20% soldiers. This platform fits nicely with the new type of amphibious invasions VTOL + drones/robots/forward observers/check points etc.
