    Of course the arcade version has more going on but the Mega Drive port was great for its time and remains good with all its exclusive features! Also it was a rather early release and obviously with a bigger cartridge size and further hardware mastery they could have made something visually closer on the MD.

      Initially I was disappointed with the home port, as Sega used arcade screenshots in early advertisement of the game, but I appreciated that they you a full season of races. I would have been more disappointed if I had spent $50 on a game that just had the arcade tracks.

      Eh, in this case it had everything to do with the powerful scaling chips in the arcade hardware and little/nothing to do with the ROM size. They could have an 8MB ROM and it wouldn't change the fact that the base genesis hardware was simply not capable of scaling/displaying as many sprites as the arcade hardware (which makes sense as it was commodity console hardware and the arcade board cost thousands of dollars at the time - it was never going to match up). The 32x/Saturn could have done a closer/close port I think.

      Exactly, the Mega Drive Version. Because World Championship mode. The arcade version is boring because it just offers one course and no competition mode. The Mega Drive version is very addictive and the re-play factor is very high. Aside from the sprite zooming, MD is the superior game BY FAR.

  • @stufaman
    @stufaman 8 лет назад +15

    To be fair, the Megadrive version does capture a lot from the arcade. Except the impressive sprite scaling, which I'm guessing was the point of the arcade.

    • @stufaman

      F1 was customised to suit the Megadrive/Genesis. Super Monaco was not.

    Timely! As I said in the other video, the Genesis port is solid overall and the best home version. Sure it's dry in terms of roadside scenery (only the Mega-CD or the 32X could have kept most if not all the scaling) but other than that it has classy presentation + smooth gameplay + some memorable tunes and is expanded with the world championship mode which is where the game shines. I also like how the tunnel sections look and the stereo localisation for some sound effects.

      Well, no wonder, considering how huge and mysteriously powerful Sega arcade boards were. 2D sprite acceleration points were astronomically high just for the sake of pseudo 3D use, while Genesis had only simple 2D acceleration that was best fit for the classical 2D games.

    Cool channel comparing the arcade to the original here. Thanks. This was one of my favorite Sega racing games. The arcade game's level of detail was tough to match, though the Genesis got the racing and frame rate down really well. Just wish the Genesis/Mega Drive had a scaling ability like the Super NES back then.

    Definitely the Arcade Version...Usually that was often the case in comparison with the earlier game consoles...Except for computer (and even with that, you had to have a powerful CPU with advanced graphic processors and better cooling), you really didn't start seeing more graphics detail and better gameplay until the likes of later Nintendo, Playstation, and XBox systems...At that time, the neighborhood arcades were fast becoming things of the past...

  • @KTJohnsonkidThunder

    The Genesis/MegaDrive version is totally inferior graphically - lack of dedicated sprite scaling hardware on the base MD made this game (like OutRunners) an overly diluted conversion.
    Sega should have jumped its development onto the MEGA CD, that would have added the extra graphical muscle required to at least make the conversion look and play more like the coin-op original.

I guess there was F1 Beyond the Limit on Sega/Mega-CD but that wasn't made by the Super Monaco team nor did it have an arcade feel to it.
      I think Batman Returns and The Adventures of Batman & Robin are as close as we can get to seeing how well the Sega/Mega-CD could have handled a Super Monaco arcade port.

    The Arcade version is much better. But who can be blamed, after all, the Mega Drive / Genesis was just a Master System on Steroids, with two thirds of the machine consisting of parts known from the Master System. Super Monaco GP could not be properly ported without hardware scaling, which is one of the reasons why the machine failed so hard in Japan. They expected at least some sort of scaling in a modern console, as arcades of the time were full of it.

    • @davida7153
      @davida7153 7 лет назад +4

      Megadrive is not a Master on steroids, its a downgrade of the arcade board system System B and its way more powerful than his little sister. Just watch the parallax scrolling Mega is capable to do in super fast games like Sonic 3, even the PC Engine cannot do that or the SNES without extra chips. Having a Z80 for sound does not mean its related to Master System since for 16 bits games is used to process the sound.. The Neo Geo also has a Z80 for the same reason and even the Sega X board.
      Its that these SEGA arcade boards designed for mass sprite scaling are insane powerful: 2 main cpus motorola 68000 working together, same megadrive cpu has but much faster each one, very powerful video chip....Its not the Megadrive is weak, its a pretty good hardware for its time.

      How did kids get so misinformed about classic gaming consoles?
      This is sad. There should be mandatory Video Game History Appreciation class in all junior highschools.

      The PC-Engine is the system that beat the Mega Drive in Japan and it didn't have hardware scaling either. The console itself is an economized version of the arcade hardware. It probably should have included hardware scaling but it would have been prohibitively expensive in 1988. The only reason it uses a Z80 as a sound driver is because it allowed them to make the console backwards compatible with Master System games using the Power Base Converter. It's much more than just an upgraded Master System and had a faster processor and higher bus speed than the Super Famicom allowing it to do some pretty impressive software scaling for a home system at the time.

      Well...yeah. It's throwing around a HELL of a lot of scaled sprites. Pop-in or not, from a technical stand-point nothing else came close to it when it was released.
