Folks are probably familiar with the Genesis version of Sega's Formula 1 racer, but it started life in the arcades. It leverages Sega's X Board hardware and super scaler technology to create a remarkably realistic first-person racing game; it's bonkers to think this was done entirely with sprites...in1989!
I must confess, I really struggled with this one. The controls are REALLY sensitive, no doubt intended to mimic the twitch-reactions needed to pilot a real F1 car, and I suspect you really need the full arcade set up and wheel to get the most out of it.
Even so, the blistering pace and simulated physics result in something that, surprisingly, doesn't feel a million miles from the racers of today.

There's something about the old games that is so comforting here?! That it isn't TOO realistic, that I know that it's just a game here. That's the problem with the newer games that they're so realistic that it doesn't feel like a game anymore but a chore to play here...Maybe it's just me here.....
I am 100% right there with you. Too many games nowadays try too hard to be “overly-realistic” and end up feeling more like a boring cinematic movie instead of a game… it’s absolutely soulless. I deeply miss the 90’s and early 2000’s era of gaming as a whole, back when games were simpler, and had a lot more creative freedom, instead of the constant unfinished grindy and generic FPS bullcrap we get now. So i completely understand where you’re coming from. You are not the only one here my friend 😩
Me too, I don't like to control movies, I prefer to just watch them
Games nowaday is like movies
@@BusterChops1000 Too much Story, too much Wokeness, too Violent, too much Profanity and Blasphemy, too much FOMO, too much live Services Grind, indeed, they are just a Depressing Movie crossed with a Job now.
Niceeee drivinng
I remember when I saw this arcade back in the day I found it so mind-blowing! I immediately bought it for my Sega Genesis thinking it was going to look the same but it didnt. I was a bit disappointed at first but then I played it and liked it anyway.
The genesis version was actually very similar to the arcade considering it's limitations... the only thing really missing from it are all the scaling sprites that were on the sides of the track.
@@Mekaneckpain Well Those buildings surrounding the track added so much realism to the game in my opinion. So not having those building didn't ruin the game but I did take some realism out of the game I wanted to play. As I said I liked it anyway but it wasn't what I really wanted
The Mega Drive version is way better because of the World Championchip mode. So addictive! We played the arcade version in 90s in Belgian arcades, as well.
@@CCQ75 Always think they should have done a Saturn version.
Played this in the 80's when it was new in the arcades here. Purchased the sitdown AirDrive machine in '96, been fixing it for the last 6 months!
Great stuff!
F1-based arcade game never ends, but 3D is absolutely legend.
Pole Position, Circus Continental and Super Monaco GP is the key.
First time seeing this game. All the things are 2D sprites, for sure. But the way they did it the trees and buildings (and the other things) are like 3D models. Great!
and thats how the arcade games of before was insane thats sega and namco made
but the modern arcade games of now is not so brutal at all
@@Renzo-cn4zw i think i don't play new games since ps2 became to the scene.
Games were more challenging in the past.
Genius Yu Suzuki at work.
@joaopires1761 yes. These guys from the old school are true artists!
If you look at the track layout very closely, it very resembles Suzuka Circuit, but without the crossover in the middle of the track, and is meant to be the same style of track as the Monte Carlo counterpart.
Monaco is a very small country, but not as small as Vatican City.
Love This Arcade! It's a Very difficult game for this time
played this in the arcades and the force-feedback in the steering was brutal
Amazing game
NICE DRIVIN!
I still imagine this game ported to the 32x, like several arcade ports, with the full World Championship mode from Genesis version...
By far one of the best super scalers by SEGA... I wish this game was ported to the 3DS like all the other ones.
This was so far ahead of any other F1 game at the time.
Board composition: Main board + Link/Network board + Sound board + Motor board. CPU: Main CPU: Hitachi FD1094 @ 12.5 MHz, Motorola MC68000 @ 12.5 MHz (16-bit & 32-bit instructions @ 4.375 MIPS) - this in 1986 hardware
Truth
@helvio2547 acshully it was 1987 ☝️🤓
Winning Run by Namco was much more advanced
It's unfortunate we never got a version with the Arcade graphics and mechanics but the content of the Genesis version.
whoever's playing this is a master!

Excellent driving, great game! 🏁
sega's glory days.. doing what nintendon't.
yea then super power came out...
@@tonycervz89Super power came with chips carrying it 😂😂😂
excellent longlay like everytime ! Continue to dream us :)
You can play Arcade games too on your PC. Then you can dream your own dreams.
@@danieldorn2927 thx but i already have entire collection of arcade et console games at home ^^
@@MrCydoo Me too. Did you ever try multiplayer over the internet? Is it even possible?
60fps back then, sega was the best
Still are the best! Miles ahead of their time, there are Racing Games *now* that, at least on Console, won't do more than 30FPS!
Still looks great now.
That´s the legendary Nelson Piquet holding the trophy on the final image. Good, real good.
wow i didn’t know it was him! wonder where they got the image from tho
Holy crap, not only was the Genesis version of this one of the first games I've ever played, but this was the first racing game I've ever played.... back when I refused to believe there was a use for brake. lol As my common cause of losing was head on collisions with the scenery watching my tires abandon me. lmao I think I was 7 or 8. This is the first time I've seen the game at this frame rate.... and at that speed too. lol Again, cause I didn't understand why the brake existed. 😅 I lost my kid mind when I found out, you could make the flag guy blast off like Team Rocket by crashing into him. Ah.... good times... back when Pizza Hut was awesome and had a Turtles in Time arcade in it....
One of the most fun games of Sega's super-scalers! And may I commend you for your unrivaled zest for the race.
Great driving! I can do well in the Genesis version, but the arcade game I need a lot of practice with, having yet to reach the 2nd stage, which seems to be the final stage of this game. I am surprised if there are only two stages. Thanks for the gameplay!
Very nice, classic game.
This brings back memories
Never seen the arcade version of this, and it looks very nice
Should have been on the Astro City Mini
Be shit controlling it with a stick
insanely hard, one of the hardest arcade games of all time
Flicky 😂😂😂😂😂😂
RUclips compression really batters this game hard. 1440p is a must.
This looks awesome. 😀😀👍👍
This would be an interesting track if it was remade in a racing sim
also this game looks insanely difficult....
Insane. Most dificulty than any f1 2021 game and than star wars racer etc..
なかなかエグイドライビングですね!
懐かしい!
SEGA really knew how to make 3d environments with 2d sprites.
It stills look great.
Great !
Good dynamics game.
A bit sad that most games back in the days got 320x240 as standard for graphics, for so many years, just a little bit higher resolution and ALL games would have looked MUCH better.
320x240 on crt 15khz monitors looks way better than lcds...

Poor Ayrton Senna at 2:00
my arcade had the magnifying glass screen!
16 bit era was the best
Anyone remember on this game some cabinets had a curved display to make it kinda look 3d
Grate game
Super Monaco GP Longplay (Arcade) [QHD]
Amazing that this was mad using only sprites. No 3D here.
I miss pop up! 😂
Is this a precursor to 3D graphics?
Yea, id say so... as well as the other games using sprite scaling like Outrun, Afterburner, Space Harrier etc.
Back in my day, that's all we had for 3D graphics. These young, punk kids don't know how tough we had it!
Sega called it 2.5D graphics their way of doing it with scalable sprites.
Seems like Sega ought to port this to new consoles
"Technique" is misspelled, but otherwise, not too bad.
Feel free to 'put in the real sponsors' in this game.
who keeps scribbling with that marker?
Never played it but it looks like those sharp turns are a little too much!
That grid woman in the yellow swimsuit is Playboy's Mercy Rooney or Claire Rambeau.
Wow
You shift too fast sometime and you lose torque. Its better of to shift in the yellow line rpm to begin for to have the best top speed in the straight line. I have received 5000 pts one time with the Rain race include. My best racing game for this era. Better that Virtua Racing one thousand time.
Project Cars 2015 Formula-B F1 Does Not Care... 😂
Which emulator do you use to run the game?
Probably MAME.
Is it just me or does the layout of the track not match Monaco at all?
The most ridiculous thing in this game...the beginner level automatic transmission is very difficult of to win that professionnal level 7 manual speed because you dont have top speed lol
Its a Arcade game bro...built to take your coins kkkk not a console game... Super Monaco Gp in Mega Drive its more easy.
Was this version censored?
Console?
なぜ7速を使わないのでしょうか?

you over shft too much!
It makes the game easier.
