While Capcom had quite the pedigree when it came to side-scrolling platform and brawler games, I think this is the only 3D-style arcade racing game the studio ever put out. It's a sprite-scaling affair that the likes of Taito and Sega had been putting out close to a decade earlier, and true 3D racers like Daytona USA and Sega Rally had made the pseudo-3D sprite-scalers of years gone by seem pretty archaic by the time this came along in 1995.
The game was released in, from what I can tell, to a very limited market that included Brazil and Latin America only, which explains why the only ROM sets in the MAME database are for Brazil and Hispanic editions of the game.
What makes Slip Stream even more interesting is the fact the game is powered by Sega's System 32 arcade board, rather than Capcom's own CPS1 or CPS2 hardware. Why Capcom chose to partner with Sega on this is something of a mystery; it's possible the System 32 hardware was more suited to the sprite scaling trickery required to make a decent sprite-based racer, rather than anything Capcom had available.
As for the game itself, it's a fairly average F1 racing game whose principal feature is the inclusion of a slipstreaming mechanic; tailgate an opponent's race car until the your speed gauge begins flashing, then pull out from behind them to active a short turbo to power to the front of the pack.
The game seems to use an internal resolution of 416 x 224 for the main menu, but switches to 320 x 224 for the actual races, which made normal means of capturing footage more problematic than usual. Pixel perfect mode is pretty much out, unless you want large black bars throughout the video, so capturing at 4:3 aspect ration was the only way to go here.

these late gen scaler games looked a lot nicer than the early 3d polygon games!
Fact. Kinda sad that home consoles 2D capabilities never evolve to what arcades were doing and then simply skipped ahead to full polygon 3D graphics.
Yes, they have way more granular detail than a Virtua Racing, for example. People got away from 2d elements with the boom of 3d, but the games from the 32 bit era that aged better are the ones with lots of well drawn textures and 2d elements.
Yes, sliding an F1 car like a rally car and lap Hockenheim in under a minute. Pure arcade goodness!
Over 270mph round Adelaide’s corners in the wet is impressive!
Everyone: Crazy boosted formula car arcade with insane sense of speed and a side order of drifting.
Japan: F1 simulator.
They know seriously their racing.
It's also an ARCADE STYLE driving racer... ACTUAL full simulators do exist made by SEGA.... the Ferrari F355 had a full bulky sit down cabinet..... it was so hard core that the average arcade operators and gaming public outside Japan, barely played it or purchased it.
@@apollosungod2819 There was one at Oasis in Blackpool, sadly that Arcade shut down some 20 years ago now, not sure what happened to the Cabinet, I hope it is still going somewhere (or better still, has Restored by a Specialist! I know a Specialist is Currently Restoring the "Ridge Racer: Full Scale" Unit that used to be at the Pleasure Beach back to full Operation (it is going to take a long time however as it is a Wreck, but, given it is the *only known Surviving Unit anywhere in the World* ! it will be Worth it!) , and the GTI Club: Rally Cote D'azure Twin Cabinet that used to be in the Winter Gardens was Restored by "Arcade Direct" Recently. Neither Sega Games, but both Childhood Classics! heck I am old enough to Remember when Sega Rally was Brand New after all!) as it was the Full Sit Down "Simulator" one with Full Motion, Triple Monitors, Surround Sound, and the Proper Open Gate H Pattern Manual Box with Clutch!
I was amazed to learn (last night!) that Mister J's Arcade still has its Old "Outrunners" Cabinet in Fully Working/Restored Condition! Sega built their Cabinet's Tough! so Hopefully the Old Oasis Sega F355 Cabinet/Simulator is Still going :)
Damn, never knew Capcom made an F1 arcade game!! Thanks for this!
Automodelista for the PS2 is also an underrated racing game that Capcom made.
@@paxhumana2015 Not an F1 game

In American gamer magazines the arcade game coverage was really sloppy and not as strong as it was in Japan where they had dedicated arcade game magazines so this game could easily slip from being known... however.
Why did Capcom partner with Sega? very simple... the Sega Multi System 32 arcade hardware was the most powerful super scalar 2d hardware made for arcades until the Sega Saturn based Sega Titan Video aka ST-V arcade hardware which could easily push the sprites and scaling to pull off this game however yeah by 1995 this getting a home port would have depended on Sega of America (the subsidiary branch hired to market, distribute, etc Sega hardware) actually had bothered to support the Sega Saturn...
Also Capcom's CPS2 was NOT a super scaling design... you can only do so much with that hardware... and later Capcom used the Sega ST-V arcade hardware and even used the SH2 CPU in their CPS3 arcade hardware which would have made a Sega Saturn port extremely close to the arcade version.
Great comment.
Why Sega never bothered to port many of their top arcade games like this, Golden Axe Death Adder, and more is beyond me.
They had a 2D powerhouse in the Saturn. Yet they decided to focus on 3D to go toe to toe with Playstation. I mean, Japan got
some 2D love and awesome shooters. It's really a shame Sega of Japan and US couldn't see eye to eye.
@Apollo Sungod The System 32 was actually noticeably faster than the Saturn for sprite scaling effects. Even games from SEGA's previous gen super scaler system (the Y Board) like Galaxy Force and Power Drift only ran at 30 fps on Saturn which was half the framerate of the arcade originals.
That'll explain why it looks and feels more like Outrunners.
@@kathleendelcourt8136 Although there is a bit of a difference between the Super Scaler Systems like the Y Board... there is also a difference in the programmer staff and the effort they may have put in as well as OTHER physical limitations like dealing with the fact that the Sega Saturn ended up becoming a CD-ROM based game system thanks to Sega of America's disruption with the 32X.
On "paper" the Super Scaler System did indeed boast certain features... same with the Multi System 32 however I hope you understand that Sega and Hitachi worked very closely together in designing the Super H CPU and the more powerful version used in the Sega Saturn... the SH2 which architecturally wise is a dramatic power difference from the Motorola 680X0 variants used in those arcade boards... which is a big factor as the Amusement Division teams were known for cracking open CPUs and other chips by using custom assembler coding because in the arcade centers there is a greater pressure to stand out of the rest of the machines... aka these machines have to appeal to an average arcade center visitor and player. They don't just have to capture the imagination but they actually have to play well as well as perform well to keep those coins coming back or in some cases, where a master player performs what seems impossible and get the top scores on a single credit.
I would argue that it might not be giving the Sega Saturn hardware and it's scaling capabilities credit due to the dual SH2s, the VDP1, VDP2 and the SCU-DSP chip... note that the SH2s also have a built in DSP and that for Power Drift and Galaxy Force, the 4MB RAM Cartridge, despite having been released in 1997, was not allowed to be used because lets face it... Sega of America dropped the ball, the set the tone of not supporting, not properly promoting and not beliving in the Sega Saturn as a next generation platform... their job was marketing and they blew it which should come to no surprise when they were doing the same with the Sega MegaDrive ever since they kept requesting that it be produced with "cheaper" parts to force lower prices instead of just doing proper marketing efforts.
Also I seem to recall that in a Japanese Sega fan magazine either press release or interview, the dev team in charge of handling the reprogramming conversions of Power Drift and Galaxy Force mentioned that they had to work with the memory available... now I do not recall the precise issue but I feel this makes sense since they were a reprogramming conversion team and not the original arcade team which in Sega, they were busy with the constant hardware changes especially that same years of 1997 to 1998 where the pressure from Sega of America made next gen hardware where Sega's devs had to basically keep up.
Man, those nostalgic old product placements really take me back. Not just because they're advertising products that aren't exactly kid-oriented (Foster's beer FTW) but also because the logos they're showing are really old-school. I don't think I've seen that old Mobil logo in at least 15 years!
Not to mention the fact that you're basically driving a pack of Marlboro reds lol.
After winning the championship our driver drives off in the F1 racer apparently going up the same path Ryu walks up in SF2 to try and catch up to him! lol
Damn, how did I miss this? I thought I played every arcade driver ever created back in the day
Probably because it was only ever released in Latin America.
@@Alevamltd And Brazil.
I've noticed 4 of these cars are F1 Liveries from the 90s, the other 4 are colour variants as told:
Best Balance - Honda McLaren
Shooting Star - Honda McLaren Red replaced by Blue
Powerful Monster - Ferrari
Drag Star - Ferrari Red replaced by Blue
Speedster - Williams Renault
Shake Hip - Williams Renault Blue replaced by Red
Fun to Drive - Benetton
Quick Handling - Benetton Green replaced by Pink
It’s funny, I was thinking earlier how Capcom was pretty much the only Japanese dev back then that didn’t make any sprite scalers, then I find this. Fascinating.

Um jogo de corridas da CAPCOM e com óbvia homenagem à Ayrton Senna, o carro McLaren e o capacete amarelo. Queria ter jogado na época!
I've never knew Capcom made a F1 game as well neither, but I had the pleasure watching this and great performance by the player! Rockin' arcade quality soundtrack of its time. I got a kick out of noticing the small details like the sparks that pop like in real life F1 races and how the weather effects affects performance.
Also can't help but chant out, "SLIHHL STREEEEEEEEME!!" lol
Never played it back in the day but it looks great. The tracks look very legit for a 95 game..
this game runs on the sega model 32, it should have been perfect for the saturn as outrunners with online play....
This game Looks awesome. I Will Always prefer these kind of sprites scaling to 3d

This looks great. Would've been awesome if it got a 3DS port and had 3D (like the Sega Super Scalers such as 3D OutRun, etc)
Yeah
They should re-release obscure arcade ports in 60fps(as option). You can even remove all licensed content as long as gameplay stays the same
I wish this was on Switch!
Thanks, love these wonderful 2D graphics.
I love the graphics of this game. It looks so amazing and cool... The gameplay as well of course....
It looks cool.
Thank you for uploading.
Interesting how they produced a pseudo-3D game so late. By 1995 most had already transitioned to true 3D.
Isn't it funny how they do the fake HDR as well when you come out of tunnel at Monaco, everything is dark then goes 'overexposed' and then back to normal outdoor lighting. There's lots of interesting details like that.
Well, I think we were lucky 2D went on for a bit in the '90s despite the new hardwares, as 3D graphics were abysmal for the whole PS1 period. Only in late '90s in the arcades and beginning of 2000s at home 3D began to be decent at least.
Those poor Goodyear tires...
The rain effects and boosting effects look fantastic
whoa , those rain and spark effects on the tires! awesome animation!

It's on a Sega PCB.
I wish they'd do some compilations of lost games like this. I've never played it and it looks like a game I'd love.
Love this game, so much fun!
One of the best-looking psuedo-3D games I've seen!
Wonderful game, too bad it wasn't converted to 32-bit machines at the time like Saturn and Playstation.
I think it could even be released for SNES e Genesis!
With certain graphic modifications, of course
The System 32 was no joke! Amazing hardware for the time

This is an INCREDIBLY rare board. In 25 years I encountered it only twice in the US.
Believe it or not but at least one of these arcades landed somewhere south of the Equator. ;)
This was distributed in Latin America, where it's relatively common.
I love that the other cars are "enemy"
Absolutely gorgeous.
Wow, never seen or heard of this game before but looks sweet.
An absolutely beautiful game!
Most advanced sprite scaller that I am aware of, when I discovered this a few months ago, my jaw hit the floor. Too bad it is one of the last of its kind... At least in the mainstream video game industry.
Holy sprite-scaling Batman!
You really felt the speed in those games lol.
Wow! Wish North America had gotten this. I would love if I could grab this for Saturn. Looks so good and the music is AWESOME! Never even heard of it. The only 3rd party title on Sega's system 32 board and its CAPCOM! I WANT it! Thanks for the video.

It's funny that in the Aus GP stage, they have the Sydney Opera House at the horizon, yet the actual circuit is in Adelaide.
Even better...the Sydney Opera House is in front of Ayers Rock, when Sydney is over a thousand miles away from there.
😊🚗 he-he! Excellent race! Good game!
Nice videogamen man
Incredibly rare board, never seen one.
I remember this one. How long has it been? More than 20 years since I played, maybe even 25. Loved it.
incredible smooth scaling ! had to be a powerful arcade set to run this....nowadays a puny 50$ smartphone could surpass this with ease....technology is a beast in itself
among all those amazing scaler effects, I feel that (ironically) the game could look 3x better if the road graphic wasn't so noisy and had more of the flat look of simpler games. it would make the car sprites more readable and better convey how smooth a racing track is.
Or the track of any modern game. They should have added a 32x dedicated to create Perlin Noise texture for the road. Add higher frequencies the closer the road comes to the viewer.
The game looks fuckin amazing
Slip Stream Longplay (Arcade) [QHD]
Really good 3D effects and it looks like it controls pretty tightly. Only thing is the sounds are like nails on a chalkboard
for a mo' there i thought this was an f1 update/mod for the 'new' steam game slipstream. Had no idea there was an og arcade called that. thats a very interesting graphics approach. Can see why Sega's superscalers probably overshadowed it. I swear that's the same drum samples used in virtua racing though! I wonder if the sound hardware was close?
This needs to be on the Switch.
We need the old Hockenheim back

I remember back in the days seen an add of this game in a magazine. Was surpris d by Capcom doing something other than fighting games or beat'em ups. Wonder if it runs on Sega hardware as it reminds super scalers a lot and CPS1 and 2 were not known by scaling and transparency effects
It does, System 32 to be exact.
Hello my friend, this game runs on a regular mame emulator? I'm from Brazil and i used to love this game back in the days.

It's not so outdated by 1995 standards. I was amaze back then and feel happily crazy when magazines announced a SEGA SATURN version (which of course never saw the light of day). Sure, it was not cutting edge like Daytona or Ridge Racer, but still impressed me, in part by the large sprites of trees and everything on the sides of the tracks with sleek frame rate, something impossible in both Mega Drive and Snes at that time.
Great game. But how config dpad controllers on race games emulators? I'd love to play Pole position on controller
