SEGA-AM2(AM2研)初のポリゴンレースゲームとなり、セガ初の3DCGボード「MODEL1」を採用したのが、この「V.R.(バーチャレーシング)」。ポリゴンレースゲームというジャンルではナムコの「ウィニングラン('89)」が先発となったものの、重さの伝わるステアリング、コーナーで横Gのかかるシート(特殊エアドライブシステム)、レース中での4種類の視点変更(VRボタン)、タイヤのグリップ変化・コースに刻まれるタイヤ痕など、後のゲーム業界に大きな一石を投じた作品となった。また、ゲーム中のピットシーンや表彰台に登場するポリゴンキャラクターが、後の「バーチャファイター」開発のきっかけとなり、「バーチャ~」シリーズの第1弾ソフトとしても知られる作品でもある。

Sega once again prove themselves to be kings of the racing genre with the superb and innovative "Virtua Racing". This was the first racing game to be fully rendered with shaded, filled polygon graphics (the first game to ever be rendered in filled polygons was Atari's incredible 1983 release, "I, Robot").
As well as the sublime graphics and superb playability, Virtua Racing also allowed players to switch camera views to suit their preferred style of play. The game features 3 well designed and varied courses; 'Big Forest', 'Bay Bridge' and 'Acropolis'.

Virtua Racing was released in October 1992 in Japan.
Sega went to General Electric Aerospace (who made the first 3-D simulators for NASA in the 1960s) in 1991-92 for assistance to develop a CG platform architecture for their new experimental 3-D system, which later became known as the Sega Model 1 hardware. Virtua Racer was the game being written to find out how viable hardware 3-D games were, it was never designed to be released, but it was such a success internally they decided to actually release it.
The first AM-2 polygon race game. The game features many epoch-making ideas : changing the point of view freely, feeling the hardness of the steering, the seat interacting with the gravity.
In true Sega fashion, their 'Virtua' prefix was used on a variety of other products such as "Virtua Fighter", "Virtua Cop", "Virtua Striker" and "Virtua Tennis".
Toshiba EMI released a limited-edition soundtrack album for this game (Virtua Racing & Out Runners - TYCY-5365, 5366) on 15/12/1993.

@@BoshBargnaniorry if it’s really late to say it but I probs think it’s because they tried to simulate the game as if you’re in a car
A few hints for people playing this on Switch or Mame:
Draft behind cars for a speed boost; you can hold it longer behind faster cars
When steering, it is more recommended with analogue control, it is smoother and easier, just don't flick as sharp
When your car's handling starts to drop, get to the pits before it gets worse, or it will render your car uncontrollable
Between the Deluxe and Link cars, the AI cars perform differently when starting a race; watch them carefully
Manual gives your car a slightly higher top speed; you'll only need to shift down to 5 at minimum if your an expert
So the pits _can_ be used. I always wondered.
私はリアルにやっていた世代だけど、確かに上級者コースの方がやりやすかった。
後半どうしてもタイヤがもたなくてピットインするから、3位で終わっていた。
そういう設定も下手な私には、作り込まれているなぁと思っていましたね。

Atari's I, Robot polygons were not shaded according to an actual light source but relative to each objects relative rotation. Virtua racing's polygons were actually lit by an genuine direct light source. In fact it is possible to observe that the light source in VR is pointing downward onto the scene. I believe Winning run from Namco had no lights either. So I believe Virtua racing to be the first to feature a consistently shaded and lit 3D scene in a game.

Camera needs some kind of shake filter
This is the PS2 version. The arcade never had that camera shake problem.
@@RedLP5000S PS2 version has updated graphics and probably a different engine too. This is MAME
@@RedLP5000S This is the Arcade version but it has never been emulated properly. It doesn't shake on the real hardware.
