After having to play this over and over again in Shenmue, this is a lesson I learned the hard way. Not only do you lose speed with the brake, but it doesn't let you ease into the turns, ruining your momentum. That said, this video is a level of mastery I could never achieve - I NEED the "G" Easter egg in Stage 4 to give me enough time to win!
Agree with this. I've completed this with 12 seconds spare 2 handed, and 9 seconds spare 1 handed (arcade). I've not played this game for over 30 years and its still amazing how I remember all the corners and where they used to try and catch you out.
Back in the day I knew kids who would just clear up the game with one single dime. Among other fond memories, I remember heading straight to the arcades (that was in '87) to play this game from afternoon school before home to do the homeworks. This was the first game that gave the player a real feeling of speed and you were kinda of afraid to crash the bike. This game was replaced in our arcade (and same spot) a few months later by double dragon which just came out...and the same kid again crashed double dragon too 🤣
Hang on and super hang on was my thing on Holiday....I used to have my name at the top of the score board on all the local arcades..and this music takes me right back to the 80's as an excited 10 year old
I remember being, what, 5? 6? maybe 7? in an arcade on Great Yarmouth sea-front and you could hear the title theme blaring out of the cabinet. Takes me back.
I remember this well late 80's,first big bike, dressed in leathers and playing this is the local acrade, without putting feet down and doing it properly......trying to impress the birds.....How funny, good times and a cracking game, many a 20pence a game was spent!!
Our local cineplex had the sit down version of this game. You really had to lean into those turns. Love how there is a Marlboro ad in the game. Everybody smoked in 1985.
wow i just happened to come across the video , it brings back so many memories when i was on vacation with my parents and siblings in italy , right across from the resort was an arcade with a simualtor where this game was to be played , unbelievable to see this again after over 30 years
it's crazy how far graphics have come. We went from this to Ride 4. I've never seen a more photorealistic game. I wonder what the 80's kids would think of it after playing Hang-on.
Hi! 80's kid here - Hang On *was* super realistic to us - especially for it's time. Way better than Enduro Racer or Excite Bike as far as that's concerned. Then Super Hang-On in '87 entered the chat. Also, not sure if you're aware, but the control at the arcade was an actual "motorcycle" you sat on and could lean which really helped the realism.
Who else found out about these games from playing Sonic Riders? There's a gear based on the arcade machine itself and even Super Hang-On. They even change the stage BGM to the games' race themes
yes it did, i allways remember going to the arcade getting change for my pound and hearing the intro music to this wooooh now that takes me back, i want to be a kid again they were great times late 80s early 90s for many young whipper snappers like me
If this Sega Arcade game came to Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PS4 as if Turbo Outrun, After Burner, Thunder Blade must is something great to have even if that already did on Nintendo 3DS. The upgrades such as high powered engine, hi grip tires, armored bumpers and easier turning already happened in Outrun as if that must happen in Hang On minus the armored bumpers and Turbo Outrun, including a never overheating turbo booster.
Yes, if you are referring to the ride-on cabinet version. There were also two traditional upright cabinet versions: one where you stand (most common), and another with a chair to sit down in.
I've never made it past stage 3. On Shenmue you can play the game with the d-pad but it's basically unplayable because it never recenters the rider. The analog stick returns the rider to neutral when it's not being touched.
You said the intro music to Hang-On sounds exactly like the intro music to Afterburner. Since I've played both games from when they appeared in arcades, I can say no they don't.
Your telling me the first few seconds to this video sound nothing like this /watch?v=MxLM25-qNJs I'm sorry but it's pretty much the same key, same first chords, same rhythm.
This game looks great on sitting arcade cabinet or the stand up arcade, its cost controversy in Japan of involving female players on the bike cabinet,i like the arcade cabinet of After Burner II and Galaxy Force II looks great too
The thing that really made me resent Hang On was all the Star Rider machines got converted to it :( And most of those Star Rider boards and laserdiscs were probably junked. That masterpiece, for this shit.
I remember cleaning up at this game at the local 7-11 when I was a kid. The key is letting up on the throttle on corners instead of using the brake.

Some arcades had the actual bike to sit on. I loved when I found those
What brake? 😂
Hang on and super hang on was my thing on Holiday....I used to have my name at the top of the score board on all the local arcades..and this music takes me right back to the 80's as an excited 10 year old
If you ask me, the music in this game is truly the best tune for racing to.
What? Its one of the most boringly repetitive tunes in a game ever.
@@Ass_Burgers_Syndrome What an exaggeration.
Seriously? Or being sarcastic?
I think I played this game soley for the music.
@@aodhablackheart nah he's being autistic
One of the best, if not the best intro title screens of all time.
This player who played this game in this video is just PERFECT!!!!
The title screen was truly amazing in 1985 :)
Yes it was
I remember being, what, 5? 6? maybe 7? in an arcade on Great Yarmouth sea-front and you could hear the title theme blaring out of the cabinet. Takes me back.
The Best 👍🏻
i really like this game! Though, it might sound tad tricky if your new to it.
This and OutRun have music that still stands the test of time.
I remember this well late 80's,first big bike, dressed in leathers and playing this is the local acrade, without putting feet down and doing it properly......trying to impress the birds.....How funny, good times and a cracking game, many a 20pence a game was spent!!
Sega had some of the best cabinets back in the 80's/90's. Hang on, afterburner, g loc... Oh man they take me back
Don't forget the sequel, Super Hang-On.
@@kingbawesome and you both are forgetting the most iconic one.... a certain OUT RUN!!!!
And virtua racing too !

Boss: "Just make 'em ride motorcycles."
Legendary. Starts in 8th position and ends in -191st place.
Our local cineplex had the sit down version of this game. You really had to lean into those turns. Love how there is a Marlboro ad in the game. Everybody smoked in 1985.
A short and hard game. Still very addictive to play today.
the intensity at the start of this game would get you every time! classic
wow i just happened to come across the video , it brings back so many memories when i was on vacation with my parents and siblings in italy , right across from the resort was an arcade with a simualtor where this game was to be played , unbelievable to see this again after over 30 years

They would've probably thought it was just as photorealistic. Lol

Legendary soundtrack.
one of the shortest longplays ever
Oh my God , so many memories with this game. It was one of my favorites. ☺
One of my favorite arcade games. At one point, I had thoughts of becoming a motorcycle racer.
After watching this, I suddenly want a Marlboro red
And a JPS. There were two cigarette branded signs!
Who else found out about these games from playing Sonic Riders?
There's a gear based on the arcade machine itself and even Super Hang-On.
They even change the stage BGM to the games' race themes
One of the two best machines in Zero Gravity don't @ me
I found out from playing Shenmue
After all these years and countless quarters, I finally saw the end of this game by watching it on RUclips🤣
Used to play this as a kid @ my local seafood joint. Man how I loved this game, and it's music!
great job, it's an amazing game and not easy
This is big technological achievement considering it's from 1985
the same year we got super mario bros. on the NES, there were games with these graphics in the arcades
Crotch rocket, vroom vroom! Nothing say cycles, or easy, like a fine Suzuki on the Suzuka!
Nice this level music was also featured in Sonic Riders when you use the Hang On Gear!
that dolphin sign will forever be my enemy!
this was included with my European sega master system. It was the first game that I finished! great memories. The port was top notch!!!!
Bro that JPS logo got me there, those good old days when you can put real brands in games and not pay for sponsorship
Willy Pro And what’s more, Tobacco and Alcohol brands no less...!
Shoot I thought I was good, this person kicked ass. Nice flashback
I love how there's just straight up marlboro and JPS ads in this game.
And THAT my friends, is how you play...
yes it did, i allways remember going to the arcade getting change for my pound and hearing the intro music to this wooooh now that takes me back, i want to be a kid again they were great times late 80s early 90s for many young whipper snappers like me
Nice memories from my childhood. Ost I never forgot though.
I remember playing this game at the local ice cream shop for years. I was so made when they got rid of it.
Back in the day i found a place which had the bike, good stuff.
What sort of PC is needed to emulate Sega's Super Scaler games at full speeds? I hear they are pretty tough to emulate.
I used to play this game all of the time back in the day.
I'm surprised I'm drunk enough to have watched that entire video.
It's 6 mins long. Are you still drunk?
I remember super hang on for genesis. I never knew about the turbo button until watching a youtube vid just recently! lol.
If this Sega Arcade game came to Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PS4 as if Turbo Outrun, After Burner, Thunder Blade must is something great to have even if that already did on Nintendo 3DS.

Brilliant playing. You make it look all too easy.
Lotsa quarters
nice play! bravo!
didn't the arcade version have the bike you sat on?
Yes, if you are referring to the ride-on cabinet version. There were also two traditional upright cabinet versions: one where you stand (most common), and another with a chair to sit down in.
I be wasting all my money on shenmue playing this game it’s very addictive lol
wow really cool. cool graphics!
I'm here cause I'm forced to spent soo much time in the arcades in Shenmue and can't get past half the track. Lol
if you pause at 3:06 you'll see a Marlboro sign, just like in Pole Position.it's so fast though you have to pause to see it :P
What's the title of the Soundtrack? I'd like to see if either they have done a metal cover out of it
just realized the map layout for this game is on the megadrive version of super hang-on's original mode
I've never made it past stage 3. On Shenmue you can play the game with the d-pad but it's basically unplayable because it never recenters the rider. The analog stick returns the rider to neutral when it's not being touched.
Very well done
real master.
I saw a video showing it here on RUclips, must've been a different version
im wondering what that one is with the dolphin in a coat....probably just an image >_>
Gameplay looks very smooth thanks to 60fps.
i think that was Barry Sheene's Suzuki @0:37
Don't hit the brakes when going fast, I learned the hard way..
I played this at the game preserve!
The intro music is like exactly the same as After Burner !
Nothing like After Burner's music.
? Have you heard the menu music for After Burner 1 & 2?
You said the intro music to Hang-On sounds exactly like the intro music to Afterburner.
Since I've played both games from when they appeared in arcades, I can say no they don't.
Your telling me the first few seconds to this video sound nothing like this /watch?v=MxLM25-qNJs I'm sorry but it's pretty much the same key, same first chords, same rhythm.
That has never been the intro/attract music for Afterburner 1 or 2, that is from another part of the game.
3:32 as far as I can remember, if you hit at least 1 "Hang-On" letter on the left, you'll get rewarded extra time, of up to 10 seconds!
Yep! You'll get an extra 20 seconds if you hit the "G"!
The it looks like that riders' knees are really tough...........
This game looks great on sitting arcade cabinet or the stand up arcade, its cost controversy in Japan of involving female players on the bike cabinet,i like the arcade cabinet of After Burner II and Galaxy Force II looks great too
nO-gnaH = Hang-On written in backwords on the title XD
Is there also a perfect port on a home console of this game..?
You can play it inside many of the Yakuza games and also on Shenmue I & II.
Dobuita Arcade in "Shenmue"!
I wish this franchise would come back?! But after the Dreamcast version..oh well..
Looks like maybe an emulator version with smoothed out graphics. Maybe..
yeah but its easier to go for the "first" ones i guess, cant go after them all, youd be there forever
bit harsh?
I've heard of this in Sonic Riders
I'm sure nobody will see that as any sort of a huge loss ;-)
Good bye, and close the door on your way out.
The thing that really made me resent Hang On was all the Star Rider machines got converted to it :( And most of those Star Rider boards and laserdiscs were probably junked. That masterpiece, for this shit.
Loved this game but I was useless at it!
You only play one course?
I can't tell if the sprites are being scaled or if the game is using many different sprites of different sizes.
Sprite scaling was the big thing with SEGA's arcade hardware at the time.
Mountains: I'm melting oh what a world what magical colourz. Rescape back to Moonwalker mom odo. Soundwave tree police, n-oo. FlynnAndross rockphoo.
good morning
People who use arcades, do you see a high score as an incentive to play a arcade game?
Hola.! Gracias.!
Outrun but its a bike race
So, how many competitors were in this race?
I counted 164.
it's like outrun
