      It was super intentional. If i remember, the genesis was based on the sega 16 arcade specs and a whole slew of games were made to be ported for the genesis for "arcade like quality". At the time Sega was pushing the "genesis does what nintendont" campaigns with vg decide type side by side graphics comparisons "nobody brings arcade hits home like Sega." The 80s into 90s were the time to be alive for gamers. Arcades were huge, the cool kids got the newest 16 bit systems, game companys were showing "attitude", and the bit wars era was alive

    For profitability reasons in December 1988 when the game was released on Mega Drive in Japan, the cartridge was only a 4meg. On a 16 or 24 meg and with less pressure for development, we would not be far from Arcade Perfect.
    For the performance/price ratio, in 1988 when it was released, the Mega Drive was a fantastic machine.

      It took 32 to make Darius Extra nearly Arcade Perfect, but there's a lot more to it than Altered Beast. Maybe 16 would be enough for Altered. I dream of a Mega Drive remaster AH AH I find the game more fun to play on MD than Arcade, and we won the parallaxes.

    Genesis Foliage - Medium
    Arcade Foliage - High
    Genesis Post Processing - Medium
    Arcade - High
    Genesis LOD - High
    Arcade LOD - Medium (look at the Gravestones on Lv1 compared to the Genesis)
    Genesis Sprite Scaling - Off
    Arcade Sprite Scaling - On
    Genesis uses multi parallax scrolling, while the arcade (bizarrely) doesn't.
    Overall, this was the game that demonstrated why it didn't make sense to still be playing on your NES, the Genesis pretty much brought coin ops directly to your home. Yeah there were some compromises, but considering is was only a 4MB cartridge, this was a solid conversion and a great demonstration of what was to come from the system.

      Altered Beast is memorable for that reason. Maybe if I were a kid instead of as teenager this game would have had a different impact.

      Altered Beast "lore" really makes no sense ; and that's probalby what makes it so "cryptic", yet kinda imaginative and "special". It is definitely heavily horror and B movie inspired, mixing _The Howling_ with _Clash of the Titans_ and some tokusatsu element (the boss growing bigger).
      I kinda disliked the game as a kid, and resold it. I remember being very disappointed with the last stage utter ugliness and its... bestiary? After fighting hordes of dead bodies, and rotting demons, what were those boxing billy goats and ridiculous purple unicorns ?! Also the final boss, while being kind of original and genuinely aggressive and stressing, was some departure and a real let-down from the iconic incredibly creepy and creative two first bosses. Overall the bosses went from two barely describable monstruosities to ... a snail-like dragon, a fatty crocodile (literally its name) and an anthropomorphic rhino. Meh.
      Still, I have some fondness for the game nowadays, and think it is still totally playable, and kind of enjoyable (to some extent). But I can't help but think it could have been even "weirder and better".

  • @lazarushernandez5827
    @lazarushernandez5827 2 года назад +8

    This is so close. The Genesis version adds the parallax layers, but is let down in just a few areas:
    -the clouds of smoke when the boss transforms, both versions use white and greys but the Genesis could have tried to get the gradient closer to the arcade version,
    -the boss scales up right before he changes, the Genesis doesn't have sprite scaling but if they had more memory they could have faked it.
    -the end stage pit to the next level is missing some details, this seemed like they could have gotten even closer with more time/memory.
    Considering how quickly they turned around this game from both concept to arcade to home port, they did a great job.

    • @yasminesteinbauer8565
      @yasminesteinbauer8565 2 года назад +2

      The scaling effects could be realized by software if someone had taken the effort to code it.
      I find it more irritating that the colors are often completely off, although there is no technical necessity for it. But the developers simply didn't have today's image processing software at that time, I guess.

      @@yasminesteinbauer8565 The Genesis had a limited color palette, it could display 64 colors (slightly more with some techniques) out of 512 total. Compare that with the System 16s palette of 4096 colors on screen out of 32,768 ( not that Altered Beast used all 4096 colors at once). The Genesis did what it could with what it had to work with.

      @@lazarushernandez5827 I am fully aware of the Mega Drive's technical specifications. (By the way, it's only 61 colors without additional tricks like Shadowmode etc.) But that doesn't change the fact that many arcade conversions have very poorly chosen colors. This has nothing to do with limitations of the MD but with indifference, incompetence or lack of resources and developer tools of the developers. I can achieve much more original looking results without lots of effort. But I have modern tools at my disposal that didn't exist back then. Especially in dark areas the weaker color resolution is really noticeable. This game, however, is relatively bright and colorful, so that's hardly significant. Most people underestimate the MD's color capabilities because they misjudge the meaning of numbers.

      @lazarushernandez5827 2 года назад

      @@yasminesteinbauer8565 "But that doesn't change the fact that many arcade conversions have very poorly chosen colors". I agree with that statement, several rom hacks have produced versions of Genesis games that were closer (color-wise) to the arcade originals, for example Street Fighter 2 SCE and Outrun.
      That isn't what you stated in your original reply though. And while today's software is definitely more capable, there was software back then that could handle higher color depths, and were pretty good at reducing color palettes. It would ultimately come down to either choosing the closest matching colors or the best color combination for the scene within the Genesis palette.

    Altered beast fue un juego que impuso un cambio!, Para esa época pues no se hacían muchas traslaciones de arcade, Y ala vez muy pero muy restringido, aunque cuando se presentó el prototipo en e3 supuestamente según revistas de época era casi idéntico al arcade , ya sabemos que la versión final cambio mucho , sobre todo en los movimientos scroll y colores y sombras para dar profundidad 😳😞la versión genesis no fue un juego exitoso en norteamerica, pues los estadounidenses y mexicanos ya eran muy exigentes ( Canadá por tradición no era partidario de videojuegos) así que la empresa empezó a regalarlo en la compra de la consola.
    Años después su creador habría dicho que el genesis pudo dar * para más* pero en su momento sega y todos los licenciatarios y fabricantes, estaban limitados a no hacer traslaciones exactas al arcade, pues "el negocio de todos era los arcades no las consolas".😳Para mi un gran juego , una leyenda 👍

      @@variedadescuriosidades6194 es correcto , en aquella época japón tenía cierto imperialismo en los fabricantes de videojuegos y arcades , siendo los arcades un negocio más millonario que la industria cinematografica,y con un impuesto mucho menor ,pero la asociación de fabricantes de la industria de máquinas de videojuegos*** ( jamma por sus siglas en inglés) imponía ciertas reglas y por supuesto sanciones Resultando las consolas un mercado muy secundario, en el cual se le daba primicia siempre a Nintendo por considerarlo no competente en el mercado de arcades.

      No era un port recortado adrede para no perjudicar a los arcades (la misma Sega publicitaba a Megadrive como "el arcade en casa"), sino por las limitaciones del momento, que era basicamente la limitada relacion espacio/costo de los cartuchos de 1988. En aquel año lo normal eran 4mb, y era impensable usar cartuchos de 16, 24 o 32 mb como se vieron en años posteriores. Obviamente, si este port en vez de salir en 1988 hubiese salido en 1992 en un cartucho de 16 mb hubiese sido mas proximo al arcade aun. De todas formas, hablamos de una epoca en la que no podiamos hacer comparativas lado a lado con lupa como hacemos hoy... el port fue bueno y cumplió su cometido: sentir que te llevabas el arcade a casa.

      @Lovesadako1978 2 года назад

      @@variedadescuriosidades6194 Que va, los ports de Capcom como The Punisher o Street Fighter II eran notablemente inferiores a su contrapartida en los arcades. Konami por su parte pocos ports hizo (casi todo lo suyo en mega era original para la consola), pero para uno que hizo, el Sunset Riders, era muy muy inferior al arcade. Las placas arcade eran mas potentes que las consolas y los juegos para arcade solian ocupar el doble o el triple que los cartuchos de consola, los recortes eran absolutamente normales y muy muy poquitas conversiones de recreativas a consolas de 16 bits no estaban bastante recortadas.
      De hecho uno de los mejores ports de Megadrive, que fue Strider, fue realizado por la propia Sega. Capcom solo cedió la licencia.
      Pero lo dicho, salvo alguna excepcion muy señalada, lo normal es que los ports de recreativas para Megadrive o Supernes llegasen con recortes tecnicos bastante notorios.

      No es correcta tu afirmación, y te voy a explicar porque o cuál es la razón, y ya tu me dirás si estoy o no en lo correcto, cuando se empezaron a rippear las placas profesionales arcade, los primeros que lo hicieron fueron españoles, como todo lo hacían en el anonimato, porque para entonces aún era piratería, los foros donde se comentaban eran punto net O sea la otra web, ahí explicaban que los juegos realmente ocupaban muy poco, algunos que en la placa ocupaban 16 mb ripeado se daban cuenta que la información útil era de mucho menos de 2 a 4 mb, y la mayoría del info estaba de más, gran parte de los MB no los ocupaba en si el juego, sino las opciones y la estructura de como debía reaccionar el cpu, pues ahora se sabe que la memoria de créditos, liberar el botón start y en si todas las funciones que hace un pulsador interface cuando adaptas una consola para convertirla a un arcade, ocupaban gran parte de la memoria de las placas, por lo que el juego de génesis en si pudiera haber sido mucho mejor, pues realmente la info básica o esencial del juego sin las opciones de un arcade del juego ocupa poca memoria ( porque son muchas más que la de un juego de consola) , eso sin meterme en detalles de cuando se dio el salto de información a medios digitales como el CD , cuando apenas los programadores empezaban a desmantelar eso alo que ellos llamaron " la gran mentira de la capacidad de un softwareo medio de almacenamiento informatico" pero ese es un tema muy extenso que es aparte , saludos 👍

For one… the animals not attacking on key moves was a heartbreak because the Werewolf and tiger hadouken animation form was dope as a kid and the flying kicks in their moves was a nice touch. The dragon kicking and punching out his electricity game the transformations personality. These are things Sega could’ve added since everything is always rushed.

    I never understood why the Mega Drive soundtrack was changed in pitch, because aside of a strange playback engine which stops to play samples, it's actually very close (lack of channels notwithstanding). Also, I'm not sure how I ever missed Edvard Munch's The Scream in the foreground during the final boss battle. :)

    É claro que a versão arcade tem um som mais suave , efeito de escala que no mega talvez faria por software....
    A única coisa que me irritava na versão do Mega é que qdo vc pega um.power up, a música volta pro início, talvez por causa da voz que por falta de mais de 1 canal pcm e menos memória pra som, acabava interrompendo a música e não recomeçava onde parou .

    A versão de Mega Drive só não é igual totalmente ao Arcade pela fita que só tem 4mb, tanto que podem notar o fundo do cenário, nem tem background praticamente e muitas texturas são bem simplificada no mega drive. Mas mesmo assim, excelente port a versão do Mega Drive.

    • @bonifaciovintage
      @bonifaciovintage 2 года назад +1

      Não só isso, mas no arcade a resolução é mais alta, paleta de cores maior, efeitos de zoom, mais canais de som, etc. Os sprites tem mais frames também, repare no bater de asas do personagem em 3:50 Mesmo assim é impressionante a semelhança, pois tecnicamente o Mega é muito inferior, senão encareceria demais o console. Se fosse igual ao arcade, seria tipo um Neo Geo AES, só que enorme e caro, poucos comprariam.

    The Arcade definitely has more detail than the Genesis version. Also, the arcade has better stereo sound because you can hear the voice clearer. The arcade version is actually 32 bit vs the 16 but home console version. The arcade has bigger sprites with less pixelation and can handle bigger sprites and more on screen enemies. The devs had to sacrifice enemies than the arcade version.

      Castlevanai Não evelheceu MAL , ja que todas mecanicas dele existe até hoje é está toda em shymphony the Night e os graficos são bonitos pra 1991
      ALterede Beast sim é um Jogo que envelheceu MAL , pois ele era TOP na epoca dele , e dentro da mesma geração ficou DATADO
      Tanto é que a SEGA mudou ele , mesmo em 1991 nao dava mais ele com o mega pois ja achava o jogo datado.
      ENVELHECEU MAL , é quando o jogo fica datado e ruim dentro da mesma geração.
      é quase um senso COMUM - os amentes de jogos ao ver o aldeterd beast hj nao acha bonito e nem mecanicas fluida , tirando o fator nostalgico é claro.

    Unacceptable the differences like the player's y position, it's from the same company. They should port exactly the same code, they even have same resolution. Even if they put the player by hand they owe to check side by side with the arcade for offset. The same for backgrounds position. Transformation scene, they owe to keep the closest to arcade blue colors in palette cycling and put bg1 higher. Why took these arbitrary decisions? For these reasons we don't have arcade perfect games from this era.

    The arcade version's sprite size and animations are better, but the MD's parallax is good. It doesn't look too bad for taking a 16 Mbit arcade game down to 4. MD Altered Beast is the best you could get at the time... forget about the sluggish Amiga and MS DOS versions. MD's version plays close to the arcade.
    One change I noticed in the bear stage is that the MD version takes away the rocks covering the first pit.
