"Super Monaco GP" erschien bereits 1989 erstmals in den Spielhallen, ich sah das Spiel erst in den frühen 90ern zum ersten Mal in Italien. Und obwohl es inzwischen echte 3D-Rennspiele gab (also mit Polygongrafik) faszinierte mich die detailreiche und pfeilschnelle Pseudo-3D-Grafik, die Segas "X Board" damals förmlich auf den Bildschirm schmetterte, immer noch total!
Die "X Board" Spielhallenplatine war eine der Platinen auf denen Segas "Super Scaler Chip" seinen Zauber wirkte: Dank diesem konnte man 2D-Sprites super schnell und flüssig skalieren und rotieren, was bei entsprechend perspektivisch gezeichneten Sprites, wie hier bei den Streckenbegrenzungen beispielsweise, einen räumlichen Effekt erzeugte, der echtem 3D sehr nahe kam. Einige der bekanntesten Spielhallenklassiker aus dem Hause Sega nutzten diese Technik, z.B. "Space Harrier", "OutRun" oder "Super Hang On". "Super Monaco GP" war übrigens eins der ersten Spiele, in denen man einen Rückspiegel hatte.
Das Gameplay orientierte sich auch 7 Jahre später noch an Namcos "Pole Position": Das Spiel konzentriert sich auf eine Rennstrecke. Es gilt zuerst eine Qualifikationsrunde auf einem kleineren Streckenabschnitt zu meistern, bevor man auf der kompletten Strecke ins große Rennen gehen darf. Hat man auch dieses gewonnen, was nicht leicht aber mit etwas Übung machbar ist, darf man auf der gleichen Strecke bei Regen nochmal antreten. Weiter bin ich bisher leider nicht gekommen.
Ich denke, das Video spricht für sich: Das ist Spielhalle, das ist Action, das ist Sega! So gut mir auch die später veröffentlichten Mega Drive Versionen des Spiels und seines Nachfolgers gefielen, diesen Detailreichtum und diese Geschwindigkeit bot leider keine von ihnen. Dafür konnte man zu Hause an der Konsole auf viel, viel mehr Strecken fahren und sogar eine komplette Meisterschaft bestreiten. Aber dazu evtl. mehr in einem späteren Video.
"Super Monaco GP" läuft hier im Emulator MAME, der das Spiel fast perfekt emuliert, einzig mit den Sprachsamples gibt es Probleme. Für die Aufzeichnung kam wieder PlayClaw 5 zum Einsatz.

I absolutely loved this game. We had a arcade shop directly across the street from the library. Whenever I was in there studying the pull of that arcade would force me out to play just a little of this game. Unfortunately I loved it so much I would literally spend hours playing this game. It was amazing because it was housed in a replica of a F1 car and right beside that was a replica of what is and will always be my favourite car a TR7 with Hard Drivin'. They were without a doubt the best years of my life. Thank You so much to the person who uploaded this. It was brought back some truly fantastic memories.

Had this on the Genesis, had no idea it was a port, or that an arcade version even existed. Genesis version was awesome but this blows it out the water

This is what they were looking for with the 2 CPU cores in the Saturn, infinite scaling looked amazing in 1990 but it looked really outdated in 1995 with Ridge Racer and even own Sega's Virtua Racing.
They really made a huge miscalculation with the Saturn release, they failed to foresight the market and pay the price with the Dreamcast demise

Just remembered how i played this game in 87-88 it was very difficult to master in 7th gear manual transmission eventually i mastered it and i dont remember how many times i had the super licence, if you see the video the position limit lowered after each checkpoint, i dont know but the arcade cabinet had changing pads gears behind the wheel in 87-88 then later the first sport cars began to offer that option my guess some car designers played this game?

It always bugged me that by the time home consoles could do sprite scaling the games had moved on to 3D. So many arcade games that never got a home version that was the true experience.

@@neilmclean1527 And to be quite honest, while I think the racing genre was the genre that most benefited of the move to 3D, I still think nowadays a very arcadey racing game doing sprite scaling on home systems could be really awesome.
