Here are just some left turn examples at intersections with traffic lights in Canada. These turns were shot around the lower mainland of Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, and Vancouver.
New drivers often don't have much confidence about left turns so hopefully these examples can help, even though they aren't the best.
When we turn left, we must yield to oncoming traffic and any pedestrians. Always check where you are going to turn, to make sure there's a space to turn into.
If you can't see or aren't sure if it's safe, simply wait until you are sure or you can see. It's not worth it to take chances.

Straight to the point and no talking through the video. I like that it just shows you whats going on. I'm a new driver and this helped me a lot. Thank-you creator
You’re welcome ☺️ glad it helps
great demos! always wait to make sure its clear, if its busy wait before the intersection as you know you will not make it on that light. There is no free on the red you have to wait till next green. Also stay in the outside lane do not swing wide into the slow lane.
thanks
Awesome Awesome Awesome content! Wow. We need more of this
Working on it 😊
Perfect left-turn tutorial. I failed my advanced road test today. F*ck the Driving Manual for not being able to explain these critical maneuvers in the real road exam. Thank you!!! Great demonstration!
Glad it helped. Sorry to hear about the road test...
thanks :)
Calm down!
Excellent video. Now I understood why the car honked at me while I made left turn on Green light (yield)😜
awe thanks for the comment! Oh I’ve been honked at too, sometimes people are just too spazzy! Safety first!!
There are a few situations you might encounter when making left turns.
1. Priority Left Turn Signal (Green Arrow Left): Simple, you have the right of way when you see it, and usually the traffic light on the other side will be red. Just turn if you see it.
2. Normal Green Light, no straight/right turn cars on the other side. You can turn but be sure to observe pedestrians.
3. Normal Green Light, traffic ahead turning right or going straight: If you are the first car on the left lane, you can go out straight, but then you have to wait, they have the right of way. When you get a safe gap, or the light turns yellow, observe incoming traffic & left side pedestrians carefully and make a quick turn.
Thanks I have to make some new ones soon.
I have always been watching people turning left into a gas station or coffee shops etc just before the intersection. I wonder how a solid single, double, double with 3-4 ft apart yellow line can be crossed over to enter area on the left. Sometimes, the left turning lane is used by the vehicles to turn left into a service area. What kind of road marking actually allows to turn left shortly before an interaction is always a mystery. Can you plz educate on it. I have yet to see anyone covering up this common practice in videos.
Absolutely - thank you so much for the great idea !! 💡 😊
Hey, any particular intersection you’re thinking of, or just in general?
Hi, what is happening at 5:55? Why are you allowed to turn left when the light on the left side (and above) has gone from green to yellow?
Hi! The car entered (pulled forward into) the intersection when it was green, so it’s legally allowed to turn whenever it is safe. That’s how we do it in British Columbia. Traffic lights legally control vehicles that are approaching intersections, not vehicles that are already inside them.
Thanks so much! I just watched your instructions on turning left and jt helped a lot
@@laurelie9008 oh good! Are you just learning to drive?! I’m glad it helped! Here’s some yellow light turns : ruclips.net/video/HzlaOKobNyc/видео.htmlsi=XD9zHUO4UzUXzOA0

Anytime!!! 😃
Hello, I was reading your blog for left turns and I have a question. If I'm in a lane with a left turn signal light and I want to left turn, do I move into the intersection when the left turn light is off but the regular green light is on?
@@starplatinum-oz4bo Yes, just treat it like any other regular green light… unless you have a red arrow!
I couldt see all combinations of ligts. For example; red light with amber arrow, green light with amber arrow etc
Not sure what you mean!?
thank you for the great video, I wrote this before but i can't seem to find it !, here it's once again, I am creating awareness videos for middle east new comers, so i need your permission to use small parts of your videos and add some Arabic voice-over to teach them not to make accidents when they come to Canada, is that ok?
Sure 😃
who has the right of way if there is car on opposite direction turning right?
The car on the opposite side, but now that you ask im beginning to question my own knowledge 😂
The left turning car should yield to the right turning car.
Literally just saw a video on that. The right guy has the right of way. (Including pedestrian if there is any)
@@willowunleash4590 Left turns really have no right of way. If there's a crash, the left turn will be at fault most likely.
What was the last song that was playing? I really like it. This video was so very helpful
Hi! Happy New Year & thanks so much for the comment! It is just some copyright-free music I found, totally random: ruclips.net/video/zKjiiVAMEgY/видео.html
When I'm waiting for turning left, the position of my vehicle must be straight, is that right?
Hi, Yes that is generally Correct although there are a few exceptions. This is so that if you get rear-ended while waiting, you won’t be pushed across the lanes of traffic and be hit a second time; you just get pushed straight forward which is less bad.
sooooo helpful, thank you!
Great, I’m glad you like it! 😃
4:06 How is turning left possible in that situation?
Hey! What do you mean? This is 1st Avenue and Renfrew in Vancouver, it's a strange kind of intersection. Most people don't go straight where you see the two lanes turning left facing me..

@@bcdrivingblog Ah I see, I'm from the US so I've never seen intersections like this before.
@@andersonlim1546 ohh!! Which part of the US?

That was weird for me too. The intersection should have a separated right turn lane, otherwise I would give way to all oncoming traffic.
Wait so u can legally make a left turn at an intersection even if there’s no separate lane to turn in?
Yeah! People do it all day every day around here, I guess that’s just how we do it around here. It’s not the best design.
Thank you!
You're welcome!😊
Can I get more information on when to actually start turning the wheel? Like should It be when the front of your car is in line with the car on the road u want to turn to?

Turning left onto a 2 lane road ... Is there a rule that states to stay in the "left" lane? People like to play "pick-a-lane" and go where ever. When there are 2left turn lanes onto a 2 lane road most people "stay in their lane" but when its a single left onto a 2lane confusion seems to be king. Example of this is at 5:28 in this video ... The silver car directly in front, that's an illegal turn in BC isn't it?
actually both the white van and the silver car...
Technically yes you are supposed to turn into the closest available lane.
Plus maintain your own lane. Do not take 2 lanes to turn.
Totally
Is there somewhere (here or on your blog) you talk about where to scan while making turns? I tried to search, but couldn't find it. Thanks.
Hi, have you read the article called “Turning Corners Not Awesome?” That maybe not be the exact thing you mean but I’m not sure… let me know 😊
@@bcdrivingblog Hi, thanks. What I was actually looking for was where to look for pedestrians and cars. Some say for left turn you should look Left,Right, Left, then front and shoulder for the pedestrians on the side where we are going. I am forever confused in this, either I look too many times or too few. I just found some scanning info in "Left Turn Tutorial" . I was wondering if there was a post for what we are scanning for and where for all kinds of turns including stops and even while driving. Thanks again.
