Once someone honked to ask me to go at left turn, I couldn't see well so i didn't go. And a sec after he honked there was a car speeding right pass me. Would've got bad crush if felt being rushed.
You and Rick from Smart drive are one of the best instructors on RUclips, thank you so much for your great detailed videos and helping people pass the test and become better drivers.
This lesson is amazing. Especially for someone who is a first time driver, who is nervous. Very detailed explanation which I really needed. Very clear instruction.👍
Shayan, this video and many of your other videos have really been super helpful in clarifying a lot of finer points in driving safely in Canada. Thank you for building this great learning resource for the public. I cleared my Class 5 road test today (transitioning from a foreign license), after pouring over many of your videos. Your suggestion about prepping the mind during a test to deal with anxiety was something that really helped calm me and focus on the job at hand. As you said, it doesn't matter if one passes on the first try or the fifth, in the grand scheme of things, it's safe driving skills for the long term, and treating the assessment as objective feedback to improve upon, which count. Thank you very much!
Thanks for the explanation on left turn. I used to be afraid to make left turn at a four way intersection where the protected left turn is off and the regular green is on and no oncoming traffic. Now I understand. Thanks a lot
This this The Best video on Left turns at intersections... and the options I have and what actions I should do in the different scenarios... Thank you so much.
I just passed my test, I couldn't take any warm-up lessons but your videos took me 90% there!! Thank you so much and you will have my full recommendation!!
Really one of the best videos on left turn amongst a tonne of random videos. Glad i was able to watch it. You explained the concept extremly clearly and kudos for the effort.
thanks so much, I used to be really confused when making a left turn at intersections before, after I watched your video, I pass my class 5 road test on the first try. Thanks again
And by the way you said something very important at the end of your video, (PLAN BEFORE YOU ENTER THE INTERSECTION), I agree 100%, you have no right to change your mind in a middle of the intersection
Even I took a lesson from this cuz I was so used to just creeping towards the middle soon as I had the green light but that waiting position and yellow light creep is very helpful 👍. Thank you. Stay safe everyone.
Thank you so much bro, very helpful, I was in a dangerous position while being in a waiting position and the light turned to red and when I had to turn, somebody from the left side position stop suddenly to avoid crashing on my car. Thanks God! Safe, since that I am very cautious when making a left turn
Awesome video! You are so clear in your instructions and I like that you explain the logic behind each steps. The diagrams are a helpful visual as well.
Great explanation. I'm having difficult knowing what a safe gap looks like visually during high traffic hours when I'm waiting to make my left turn. I feel like I just can't tell how fast the cars are going and what the distance of a safe gap looks like. This makes me quite nervous as I find myself in the waiting position often when the light turns yellow.
I apparently failed in the last example. North Van ICBC. Few blocks from the building I had to turn left. But there is a truck towing RV. I don't see much, to add to the injury- behind the truck is a road that curves to the right. I did same as the video- stop, and dong go until it's safe. And that's what failed me. Video showed me that I was right all along.
You have brilliantly illustrated all the possible things that can go wrong by using your "waiting position". The correct waiting position is behind the stop line, just like when you're waiting for the light to change. Also, never block the crosswalk.
So basically once you’ve committed to turrning left you should have your back tires in the waiting position ASKING the oncomers to yield. When lights start to turn to yellow, you should already be inside the intersection, and at that point you’re “NOT ASKING” anymore for them to yield. Lol.
This is so helpful! During my road test, I skipped your '3rd scenario' and went from 2nd to 4th, and the examiner failed me as it was, according to him, a ticket-able offense.
Wonderful... I learned a lot. But what if you're caught out in the middle section and it does turn red. Would it count against us if we just went straight to avoid on coming traffic?
Nice vidéo...what if in the case you showed when turning left some pedestrian on your left jumps suddenly and you have then to stop in the intersection but as it's red light so the traffic on your right has green light, what if this right traffic speeds up while you stop suddenly in the intersection when some pedestrian jumps on your left? What is the best practice in this case? I guess as there should not be more than one vehicle in one intersection, in addition to the traffic behind you, even the traffic on your right Should not also speed up, ie it should stay at the stop line, before you clear the intersection right?
Hi Shayan thanks for the wonderful video. One scenario that I'm not sure who has the right of way ... If a vehicle has a dedicated left turn and at the same time another oncoming vehicle is trying to turn right, then who has the right of way if the streets have only 1 lane?
Hi Arnab, If you are facing a green arrow then you have the right of way. If you are facing a regular green light you must yield to the oncoming traffic if making the turn would mean that they would need to slow down for you or cover their brake.
Hi Shayan, Thanks for your exquisite explanations, it was really helpful. Suppose I am in the 2nd scenario, and a car on the opposite road is turning it's left, which is certain in the majority of cases, who's having right-of-way? Is it me, other car or both can turn left at the same time?
Hi Jerin, you are welcome. As for your question, usually, the opposing cars waiting to turn left do not interfere with our ability to make our turn when it's safe to do so. The key word here is safe. In other words, if the car waiting turn left across from you is blocking your view of oncoming traffic, then you need to wait until they turn so that you can see it's clear, or when the light turns yellow, we start rolling forward, looking for a safe gap to complete our turn. I hope this helps.
I was taught to have wheels turned . Now you say no. No wounder I failed my drives test. Everyone if another mind of ideas. Beginners are not aware..Ok Now I will watch your film.
The best and most comprehensive lecture about the left turn, which I have ever heard. Thank you. Best wishes to you and your students!
Yes the best
what happens if the opposite side is making a left turn at the same time as you
Thank you. I failed my test as I froze due to obstruction of view of oncoming traffic. I now know exactly what I am supposed to do!
Once someone honked to ask me to go at left turn, I couldn't see well so i didn't go. And a sec after he honked there was a car speeding right pass me. Would've got bad crush if felt being rushed.
good decision, you literally safe yours and that speeding life as well.
This is the best video on RUclips for learning left turns. No other video gives this level of detail or in such a simple way. Great job.

Very helpful! My instructor didn’t explain in such detail
Very Impressive.. It covers all possibilities I had in my mind and thinking to get answers.!
Finnally i understood all the cases. Thanks!
Thanks for this video. The 3rd one happened to me today.

It's really helpful. I faced the last scenario; a big car blocked my view of the incoming car.
Very useful and well-paced video .

Kolaylıklar ve başarılar dilerim. Şahsen tanımasam da, aksandan tanıdım :) Çok güzel video. CA, USA için bakınıyordum :) takıldım kaldım.
Do understand scenario 2. Why would a car hit me from behind on a left turn if I’m waiting. I’m waiting in the left turning lane 🤔
