  • In this video we discuss what you should be thinking about when coming up to make a left turn at an intersection where the light is green and there is oncoming traffic. You may have to complete your turn on a yellow or red light. We'll talk about what you should be taking into consideration while waiting in your waiting position.
We are a driving school in Victoria BC Canada.

Thanks for making these explanatory videos.
Question: if it's a large intersection that can fit say 2 cars in a waiting position, is it appropriate to enter the intersection on a greenlight if there's already another car there (assuming the other car left enough room behind them)?

What I would have done is still be in the intersection to make my left turn but waited until that left turn vehicle in front of me would have made its left turn because I can't see if any cars that I can't see are going to stop or what. Then I would make my left turn after I see the light turned red and or when I see enough that no cars are driving with an intention to keep driving past the light toward me from the opposite direction.

In America, 37 states allow left turns on red at an intersection from a one-way street onto another one way street. Only five states allow turning left on red from a two-way street onto a one-way street. However, 8 states prohibit turning left on red onto a one-way street from any streets.

These are the only five states that allow left turns on red from a two-way street onto a one-way street.
    -Alaska
    -Idaho
    -Michigan

Question: is it a general rule to have your back wheels in the middle of the crosswalk to get into a Left turning position? I live in Toronto and when we turn Left, in most intersections that are larger, I was taught to go right in the middle to make the clearance needed, less.
