Gotta love how they did these games back in the day. How the fuck were you supposed to guess this? I had to read it on a magazine after beating the game
@@solitaregames Indeed. Beats the "Go here, do exactly this" pointer style we got now. I think that's part of what makes the Fromsoft games so compelling.
This game is sorely in need of a rewrite. I appreciate the ambition with the plot, but as many an editor will tell you, sometimes the reach exceeds the grasp. This could have been paired down, simplified, and tied in better with the plot of its predecessor. It's still a five star game and easily one of the best RPGs ever produced. But with a little restraint, it could have been utterly transcendent.
It is more like they failed to add all the features. There are locations in the game that feel like they were supposed to have something more. Also at the start of the game, you can go from house to house and find something to collect. Later in the game that is only left to chests. The first disk has like 70% of the game and the second disk has like 30%. Not sure what happened. Probably since the FFIX started development they needed more people
@@Joso997 There's also the matter of it feeling like they just kept adding more and more characters without considering how they'd add to the story. The cast of this game is probably one of the biggest I've seen of any jrpg, but this results in a great deal of characters outside of their introductory story (assuming they even get one) completely losing any sort of character interaction or growth outside of the lines they'll only say if you happen to have them in the party at any given time. Ultimately, for how large the cast is only a very ludicrously small handful of them are actually all that important for more than a couple hours or have any great deal of non-optional lines or involvement in the story. You can argue that this is sort of common and there are a great deal of jrpg with this problem even into the ps2 era (Suikoden games for example) but even they still had a select main cast of playable characters with importance throughout the story. Honestly, Serge and Kid are like the only player characters with narrative significance throughout, and one of them is a silent protagonist. Looking back on that, it feels so peculiar that for how big this game's cast is so few of the characters actually mattered. Most character interaction was driven by your enemies, and a lot of characters you met would become potential party members who from then on would only have optional dialogue based on if they're in the party.
@@Joso997 Your complaint about first and second disc having more or less is par for the course with PS1 games. The only thing I know that changed was a major character from the first game was supposed to have a key role but he was changed to a minor character. That's about it.
@@FirstLast-yc9lq You pretty much completely missed the point of my comment, or outright ignored it. The issue isn't lore. Hell, giving a character a bunch of lore only for them to have no story significance is just as if, not more of an issue. The issue is that for how bloated the cast is, only like 2 or 3 of the characters matter for more than a very small portion of story, and one of those characters is a silent protagonist that barely qualifies as a character. Most the cast has no presence or impact in the story whatsoever. For all the enjoyment that can be had from this game, it's still worth noting its major flaws. And that is a pretty big writing flaw, even compared to other jrpgs of the time that suffered similar issues with bloated casts and large swathes of optional members.
If Chrono Cross was real life & I was a newscaster, & I was broadcasting Schala's speech live, I would cry, hug the 1st-person I see and just walk away. Quit my job on set & just cry all curled up
I remember back then my first ending was the bad one, i mean how in hell i suppose to know the correct order of chrono cross? especially when im not very good at english at that time... however thanks to gamefaqs back then i manage to get this ending, i wonder is gamefaq still around today?
Right at the end of terra tower when you get on the elevator for the final boss the order rings out there. I've also seen that it's the order in which you had to answer the crio sphinx.
Personally, I really like Chrono Cross. Honestly, the reason why is I never played Chrono Trigger until very recently. For someone saying reason, I've had the game in my collection for the last 7 plus years, but I never picked it up until recently. Now I can't put it down! I just realized what I've been missing for the past, almost 28 news! There is no fool like an old fool!
Leena should join you automatically at the beginning. At least another world leena. (At least it happened with me.) But you can also get her and Poshuul if you refuse coming with Kid three times when you meet Kid for the first time.
The choice you make with Leena at Beach is important. Pick the first options for all Then when you get sent to Another World. Deny Kid 3 times and you'll get Leena and Poshul ( if you didn't get him in Home world with Heckon Bone items)
Canon wise its the same Schala. And the explanation they gave was that all Zeal royal family members dyed their hair blue to show their status. Because even in Radical Dreamers schala is portrayed as blond. (and Radical dreamers is the true sequel to Chrono Trigger).
@@sibbywoo depends on which version. Radical dreamers schala was reborn after getting lost in time by lavos. In Chrono cross she was trapped by lavish and player has to free her. But both versions she forgotten who she is and her past. I'm Chrono cross she regain her memories as princess schala as seen in the ending.
you can't find this kind of eloquent writing in modern rpgs. they've been more generic or just full of nonsense since ff13. or maybe it's just me? maybe also due to the fact they have voice acting now and i want to spend less time reading and just watch movies/? whatever the case is, square enix writers / translators have long lost their touch
I don’t know Chrono cross screws over the original cast for absolutely no reason and it’s impossible to know whether anything you did was worth anything in the end or not Also they messed up Scahla’s age and hair
Has any one ever noticed that when you activate each element, as part of your action, a musical sound is played. So in an effort to beat the Time Devourer with the Chrono Cross, you are slowly starting the first couple notes of the ending theme.
This ending still makes me mad more than a decade after I beat it. Want an original story? Too bad, the last half tells you this is going to be about Chrono Trigger. Want to revisit your Chrono Trigger friends? Too bad, they all died horrifying deaths, except Robo who had a horrifying life instead. Want to finally save Schala? Nope, you get annoying side kick that we’re going to tell you is Schala. Want a fun meaningful ending where you talk to the people you met in the game? Nah, how about a slide show about planet sperm?
First you have to know which colors to cast in the right order, AND the boss not interfering in your colors casting is pure RNG. So i don't believe you at all, you need to be beyond stupidly lucky if you get it by accident.
@@RaptorZX3 The boss follows a pattern, you can predict it and adjust. (I dont remember the pattern because i played it non stop as a kid, but has been a while)
Lenna kind of sucks so I used Fargo at this point since Post Fort Dragonia Kid is NEVER in the party for the rest of the game not only did I keep Fargo in the party I never did the Burning House scenario after beating FATE to use have Kid back in the party. I also did the Save Kid route so no Glenn in my party on a 1st run. I used Fargo/Starky as my final party.
well, you dont get Kid but you get Harle for a while. But Glenn and Kid are always my party members. Leena is a third and Boris is a forth. So when I dont have Glenn I use Boris or Leena.
Honestly, SE should remake CT and CC with an eye towards unifying the story properly. CT is one of the most beloved games of all time and, alongside a proper follow-up in a "completed" CC, would be a sales juggernaut But SE would probably find a way to stuff it with microtransactions and NFTs. Its sad that so many Japanese developers forgot how to "business" and started believing the suits should direct game development. Squaresoft was a brilliant company until they got combined with the pile of stool that was Enix.
there will be no remake of CT unfortunately, it cant be done. Because the dream team is no more. And without it, SE will just ruin a masterpiece. Closest to a CT remake is "Another Eden". And regarding SE... the company began to sink once they moved the main HQ to California.
Beating TimeDevourer(Lavos + Schala) without the use of elements and Chrono Trigger only kills him in a particular timeline. It doesn't erase it from existence.
As a game by itself -- very good. Spells are a bit clunky, and the fight mechanics with the stamina thing. But overall, good story, love the selection of characters. As a trigger "sequel" (is it even called that??) Horrible. 6.5/10
You do realize that this actually _followed up_ on all the threads that Chrono Trigger failed to cover, right? Like the ultimate conclusion to Magus and the schemes surrounding them, what happened to Robo and the ultimate "ripple effects" of all that time travel they did which was hinted to have destabilized the flow of time, all the defeat Lavos. It didn't so much as "overwrite" Trigger so much as it did try its best to expand the threads. The only issue I take with it as a "direct sequel" was that it seemed to be that the cast stumbled upon the aftermath of the Lavos affair and had to tie it up rather than having a personal stake in it, but you could also argue that the whole story was built around the machinations of that ruined future trying to over-rule an independent world and that world fighting _back._
More of a real sequel than a Chrono Trigger 2 would actually be. You can't make a regular sequel to Chrono Trigger due to how far it takes its time travel and multiple endings. You would have to be nepotist and rob the game of its multiple endings by choosing but one to be the "real ending", taking away a big part of what made it special. The Dream Team would also no assemble again, and a new Chrono game would not be better at the same things Trigger was good at, never meeting those high expectations. Chrono Cross makes every Trigger ending canon with the Time Crash, all of them coexisitng and competing. Stop spreading the myth that Cross is not a real sequel to Trigger. It is the best type of sequel it could get, even if it isnt the best game at times. Themes and storylines started in Trigger keep evolving non-linearly in Cross, if you haven't played Trigger, you would not understand those nuances in Cross.
well thank you for your opinion, but if you didn't like it, why are you here then? When I dont like something I dont even look at it less speak about it. And I am sure many people here have my same opinion and wont care about yours. So do yourself a favor and move on please.

agreed. And if you try this style now, people will complain.
Probably since the FFIX started development they needed more people
@@Joso997
There's also the matter of it feeling like they just kept adding more and more characters without considering how they'd add to the story.
@@OsnosisBones Those characters are there for replay value. Not for story points. Not every character is obligated to have lore built around them.
Quit my job on set & just cry all curled up
Somewhere, in a timeline far, far away, this did happen.
ANOTHER EDEN X CHRONO CROSS COLLABORATION!!!!!
WE KNOW!!!! And I am actually trying to film it! Sadly I just began Another Eden, and I need to at least finish chapter 25.
I remember back then my first ending was the bad one, i mean how in hell i suppose to know the correct order of chrono cross? especially when im not very good at english at that time... however thanks to gamefaqs back then i manage to get this ending, i wonder is gamefaq still around today?
it still does. Gamefaqs.
Well, I had the strategy guide so I used that the most.
Right at the end of terra tower when you get on the elevator for the final boss the order rings out there. I've also seen that it's the order in which you had to answer the crio sphinx.
@@ckelcro it is also the order for the melody sequence of the chrono cross.
All of them are clues for player to realise how the chrono cross works.
Hey yo wtf. Why is ethereal by tmxy hitting it when this song isnt? It feels ripped from this.
You are right, it does sound similar. But this Sound Track game in 1999. So maybe Txmy took inspiration from?
Personally, I really like Chrono Cross. Honestly, the reason why is I never played Chrono Trigger until very recently. For someone saying reason, I've had the game in my collection for the last 7 plus years, but I never picked it up until recently. Now I can't put it down! I just realized what I've been missing for the past, almost 28 news! There is no fool like an old fool!
Well, for me, I think what makes Chrono Cross special was its unique combat system.
I can't wait to play it again, now on Xbox series

Leena in Another World...
So sad -_-
I know, right?
How to get Leena?
Leena should join you automatically at the beginning. At least another world leena. (At least it happened with me.)
But you can also get her and Poshuul if you refuse coming with Kid three times when you meet Kid for the first time.
You have to deny to let Kid come with you. Then you wake up in your house and Other Leena comes in and says she's been thinking.
The choice you make with Leena at Beach is important. Pick the first options for all
Then when you get sent to Another World. Deny Kid 3 times and you'll get Leena and Poshul ( if you didn't get him in Home world with Heckon Bone items)
real life is hard to live do we all have time line that tells are story of life the game we all play right now
Is that the same Schala from Chrono Trigger? I thought she had blue hair?
Canon wise its the same Schala. And the explanation they gave was that all Zeal royal family members dyed their hair blue to show their status.
Because even in Radical Dreamers schala is portrayed as blond. (and Radical dreamers is the true sequel to Chrono Trigger).
Okay, that actually explains a lot. So thank you. That must mean, story-wise, Schala must of severed all ties with her past.
@@solitaregames Oh cool, thanks for the info!
you can't find this kind of eloquent writing in modern rpgs. they've been more generic or just full of nonsense since ff13. or maybe it's just me? maybe also due to the fact they have voice acting now and i want to spend less time reading and just watch movies/? whatever the case is, square enix writers / translators have long lost their touch
No, its not just you. I understand what you mean.
I don’t know Chrono cross screws over the original cast for absolutely no reason and it’s impossible to know whether anything you did was worth anything in the end or not Also they messed up Scahla’s age and hair
@@starvoltnexus3139 i thought they died in chrono trigger so wdym
The dialogue in this game is so philosophical and existential
@@unskillfullymasterful the girl you see inside the creature is... schala, she didn't die per se, but got fused with lavos, which is this creature.
Has any one ever noticed that when you activate each element, as part of your action, a musical sound is played. So in an effort to beat the Time Devourer with the Chrono Cross, you are slowly starting the first couple notes of the ending theme.
yeah, I did notice. Its a bit obvious, no? lol
I dont get it..
what is that you do not get?
Хорошее оружие дали Лене конечно 👁👁
I used the Chrono cross first a got it
I got this ending by accident 😁 EDIT: ... on my first playthrough. And I'm not lying. I can swear on anyone but I have no proof.
First you have to know which colors to cast in the right order, AND the boss not interfering in your colors casting is pure RNG. So i don't believe you at all, you need to be beyond stupidly lucky if you get it by accident.
You trollin like a mother
I think you meant the end credits only. Since the normal ending is a bad one since timedevourer teleports and escapes and eventually ends all life.
@@RaptorZX3 The boss follows a pattern, you can predict it and adjust. (I dont remember the pattern because i played it non stop as a kid, but has been a while)
@@RaptorZX3 I was stupidly lucky apparently. But don't have proof to back it up. So sadly, it will remain a lie for most.
Lenna sucks as in never in my party and Glenn I never got until NG+ runs but I used Fargo/Starky as my final party members.
@@veghesther3204 Leena usage is a matter of liking. She is weak physically but good at blue magic, I use her as healer mostly.
I'd rather use Fargo for that since he can use Cure all and he STILL gets all the worthwhile items to steal.
Leena IMHO sucks for the ENTIRE game
Honestly, SE should remake CT and CC with an eye towards unifying the story properly. CT is one of the most beloved games of all time and, alongside a proper follow-up in a "completed" CC, would be a sales juggernaut
But SE would probably find a way to stuff it with microtransactions and NFTs.
The story was too convoluted. That is the only thing that ruined this game.
WTF this is best ending??? And i think just beat lavos and don't save schala is true ending
yeah this is the best ending of the game.
6.5/10
honestly speaking, the developers did say that it was more of a stand alone loose based on trigger than an actual sequel.
@@Sizdothyx you know, you do have a point.
This game was trash.
well thank you for your opinion, but if you didn't like it, why are you here then?
When I dont like something I dont even look at it less speak about it. And I am sure many people here have my same opinion and wont care about yours.
So do yourself a favor and move on please.
