The show was cancelled by the BBC because it was becoming increasingly more expensive to produce, and they wanted to free up budget to make newer (cheaper) comedy shows. If you go through the history of BBC comedy you'll find many great shows that were cancelled because of budgetary constraints. That's why the majority of good comedy is produced by Channel 4, SKY and DAVE and Nexflix Originals these days.
