And this was 2 years before Phoenix nights. Not only did that rip off 'The Club' sketch but a lot of the cast from Phoenix Nights accused Peter Kay of not giving the cast writing credits, as a lot of it was ad libbed. It makes sense as Max and Paddy was nowhere near as funny as Phoenix Nights.

Seriously, I love surreal humor (Spike Milligan, Monty Python, et al), and therefore I despise lazy randomness, which its creators legitimize by calling it "surreal." Every person in the world can scrape together a random pile of shit and call it "surreal," but it becomes neither surreal nor skilled.
I disagree but its not everyone cup of tea. I think this is just a lot of stuff they wanted to get out of their system before going onto their other work.

I saw it back in '99 and thought it was hit and miss. Returning to it now, my opinion hasn't changed at all. There's an 'Oh, that'll do' attitude that comes across in quite a few sketches, making it seem half-baked and slapdash. Props to Vic and Bob trying to do something different (it's certainly much darker than The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer), but I'm baffled as to why so many people seem to think this ranks among their best work.
