BMW R1250GS TFT ISSUES! Stranded in France, fortunately not. 🤔

- Whilst on my Normandy Landing Beach Tour, the TFT threw up several warnings and did some weird things.
What's going on with the TFT?
Anyway, fortunately I didn't get stuck, but the bike is going into my local BMW to get plugged in for any codes that may have been generated.
Any thoughts?
Had the bike for 10 months with none of the issues in the video occurring before this.

I was always told to switch the engine off with the push button not the kill switch or the side stand so it shuts down properly. The SOS function was resolved with a software upgrade under warranty. I’ve had the odd traction control issue on start up but it cleared with a shut down and restart. Be lovely to see you back supporting the operation at the flagship base.
Flagship base ?
@@gsd32i 😂😂
I have had 2 software issues since buying my GS 2021, one concerning Traction and the other performance. Both problems were solved with updates for the software, however,it is quite disconcerting when you are far away from home.
The sos does sometimes warn you that you are out of range. Since the updates, this hasn’t happened anymore. Thank you for your wonderful videos as I came upon you while investigating which tyres to replace the standard Bridgestones. Now I know! I will be going this route in summer( Normandy to Bretagne). My dad landed on Utah beach and I had always wanted to visit this place where so many young soldiers lost their lives. Thank you for posting, new fan and subscriber , Jim.
Thanks, just getting the footage together for Utah and Omaha Beaches, so watch this space.
Stranded in France!?! I sure hope not. :) Just ordered my GSA a few weeks ago. Your title scared me a little. Haha. I hope your trip to Normandy went well. I've always been a history buff, especially WW2. Thanks for the video and keep up the great content.
Thanks , loving the gs still, best bike I have owned. Just editing all the footage to come up with a watchable series of Landing Beach Tour videos......Now all you need to do is look at ALL the things you can get for the GS 😂
I had that starting issue. Video on my channel. It's not an unknown issue, and has to do with valve clearance. If you leave the bike to cool down a while, it resolves itself. I've had that emergency call issue too, but the dealer couldn't diagnose. Gremlins!!! You're not alone.

They eventually claimed it was a poor connection with the battery, but I don't believe that. It hasn't happened since.
@@photobiker4309 I had the same issue, and it was dirty battery terminal, interestingly I took the battery out and cleaned BOTH the negative terminals (the negative terminal is daisy chained to provide a negative terminal on the Right hand side), once I had cleaned those terminals, issue disappeared. I had to call out BMW recovery several times as a result, in the end it was the Recovery Guy who suggested it, guess he’d had enough of picking me up from different locations, not had the issue since
Hi GSD,sorry to hear of your troubles, firstly going back onto your tyres saying your bike pulls to the left, I have the same bike same age and same tyres, took mine out today 😁 covered about 60 miles, duel carriageways etc , and I have to say I never noticed mine pull left or right , (You must have ya wallet on that side ) 🤣 when restarting the bike it’s important you let the TFT cycle through if started to early it can throw up unwanted warning, it’s probably not an exhaust valve issue , ( have you a gs 911 scan tool ?)
Your emergency dater or what ever you had is probably a signal fault nothing to worry about it happens occasionally.
As regards to your heated grips I haven’t herd of that issue, I wouldn’t have thought your heated jacket wound causing those issues give it another try with out the heated jacket on if you haven’t already done so , wishing you a safe journey home , keep it on the stops !👍.
Thanks and yes it was kept fully to the stops on one occasion (fast enough for an ex sport bike rider )and rock solid but I didn't take my hands off the bars to see if it drifted 😂
Emergency call is just when it can’t find a signal. Nothing to worry about
👍
I’ve had the key not in range loads, and now have to put the key in my outside pocket , I did wonder if it was because of my new heated jacket ,
Yup it is.
I have my Key on a LanYard around my neck, solves the heated (GERBING) jacket issue (and means I don’t leave the key anywhere as an added bonus)
@@KarlyBoy Good idea👍
Yes and yes, I get this exact same issue on my tft about the key, only happens when I have my heated gear on, comes and goes, but doesn't cause any issues luckily
As luck would have it, I was on a ferry between Horseshoe Bay BC Canada, and Nanaimo Vancouver Island, BC Canada. On the car deck, just hanging out, a fellow walked up and was looking at my 2022 R1250GS Rally. Turns out he was an employee of BMW , Netherlands. He advised; never use the kill switch to turn off the bike. He said use the main activation button, to avoid the issue you had. So BMW was well aware of this issue, back in 2022.
Now, I understand why they relocated the "on"button to its new location. This ugly new 1300GS is starting to grow on me.
Like others have said, the first problem sounds like a low/weak battery. It's, unfortunately, a very common issue with these bikes. Fortunately, it's easy to just replace the battery. I wouldnt be surprised if the third issue had something to do with a weak battery as well. Whenever the voltages on modern machines it outside what they expect, they get all kinds of weird.
Its the jacket, the car park. Is the bike not picking up the phone or the key
I’ve been looking at the older gsa 15-18 vs the newer 1250 with TFT. These issues have always worried me about newer bikes. Maybe it’s a fluke, but the older style of speedometer feels more reliable, but harder to read. 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for sharing. Enjoy your trip.
Back home now . Great trip . Love the bmw glad it’s got a 3 year warranty 🙈
just had the update last week at my first service , Stopped on the kill switch saturday and wouldn’t start, Also once ridding again while going over a slight hill the front wheel lifted and literally the second it hit the ground the tps went bananas and instructed me to pull over immediately . The tyre was perfect no issues. I will run this weekend and see if it happens again.
Had three GSs, few electrical gremlins sorted under warranty, biggest issue was the ‘tick of death’ on my 2019 1250, resolved with a complete cylinder replacement under warranty again. Valve damage apparently😬. Ride a Multistrada 950 V2S now with absolutely no problems so far and a lot more fun to ride…
Re GoPros, dumped them a long time ago…Action 3 and Insta x2 brilliant.
I get the ' Emergency Call' thing now and then. I think its a wifi signal issue. System comes back on when it finds a signal.
The dealerships are doing a lot of updates on the 1250’s right now. My ‘18 1200 GS TFT had some issues too. After an update at the dealership it was all fixed.
I've had a similar tft issue on mine coincidentally near St Mere Eglise when i was over last year. Stopped to put waterproofs on and when I went to restart, the tft came up with dtc error and wouldn't start. Turned everything off and tried again and laboured into life.....fast forward a few months later, I was in my garage messing about with cardo and had the tft on for a while without the engine. The bike had fired up fine prior, but when I finished doing what I was doing and went to start the bike to move it, dtc error came up again and the bike failed to turn over. I put it on to charge for a few hours and on a retry it fired straight up so I came to the conclusion the tft draws a lot of battery when on, and when the engine is off it runs it down to where there isn't enough voltage to start the bike and it has a fit.
It's been in for service since and they've cleared the error codes and given clean bill of health, so I'm convinced it's low battery levels caused by the tft without the engine running.
Yours seems to be multiple issues, so probably more to it, but maybe your jacket is drawing too much power and the battery is struggling to keep up?
Strange, as the bike has been ridden many miles whilst on my tour in France and I don't leave the bike sat there with everything on without the engine running. I checked the bikes status page on the tft and all in the green .Its going in tomorrow 🤔
I’ve had the starting issue, and it was typically when I had the TFT on for a relatively short amount of time, there was not enough Juice in the battery to turn over, it would basically just turn off the tft and go through startup, I cleaned the Battery Terminals and my Optimate Terminals (which I had only had on for 4 weeks), but were already ‘manky’ and it came back to life, the ‘startup’ was very random til I cleaned the terminals, incidentally when that happened I would get random alarm messages on the tft, DropSensor, and various others, that would clear very quickly once the bike started
Sorry to hear about your issues, afraid I'm a bit of a technophobe and try to avoid keyless and all the associated malarkey.
Completely with you on the Action 3. We think it's great, reliable, and does what it should. Sold every Gopro I owned, just not reliable.
Yup my b roll gopro gave up the ghost on this trip. Tempted to do a gopro destruction video! More than happy with my DJI, the magnetic mount system works very well, easy to get batteries out, cards etc, no need to reset the day and date, no need to dismantle the helmet mount to change things ...I could go on. I don't even have to check that the dji is level as the chin mount etc is fixed and I just pop the camera on. Fabulous system .
Coincidentally I had the same traction control error the other day when I managed to stall the bike at a junction. The bike refused to start until I used the main on/off button. I wonder whether there is some firmware update issue with the connected app?
🤔
nope not heard anything like that, mine likes to throw up a warning about the key not being there when I am wearing my heated clothing, only happens when I have my heated clothing, comes and goes.
yes I am happy with that code but the speedo thing is very unusual.
Hi, I've not had it on the GS yet but the KTM before and on my car, when the battery has almost run out of juice (usually when I've left the lights on for a bit without the engine running) it has shown errors with both ABS and Traction control. As you are aware Im guessing you can't connect the battery up each night to an optimate? Test the battery when you get back to see how well its holding charge.
Yes thanks I have the optimate, but there battery page on the menu on the bike showed all green with the battery. It will go in today for them to plug their diagnostic tool into
oh dear, the GS really doesn't really like France, does it?
1st issue, never happened to me, DTC error shouldn't be exhaust valve though.
2nd issue, that's the SOS button on your right handlebar... I for one don't even have it on my bike, you can't equip it in my country so perhaps it doesn't work in France?
3rd issue, that's a strange bug you found, never happened to me but I'm running TFT version from last year, maybe it's a new bug they introduced in your version?
As everybody else suggested, strange issues happen when you have a faulty / dying battery due to all the electronics... so replacing it would probably solve your issues.
PS: I always use the killswitch or kicking the side stand down while in first to turn off the engine; never had any codes or problems popping up, that's baloney.
Had problems starting mine twice. Once got error codes in hotel, then 30min later had to push it onto the ferry (suspect had started it too often in que) Second time stopped for 5 min after 30 mile run, full power on seat and heated grips and would not start. 1st resolved ok when we docked, 2nd after sitting at side of a cold road for an hour. Dealer says battery is fine. Suspect low battery voltage gives every warning under the sun except low battery. Never had these issues with a Ducati or Triumph!!😢
Yes the ferry stop start is always a potential issue, builds the leg muscles top though 😄
I have 2021 S1000XR and the only issue I had was using the kill switch a few times instead of the start/stop button the bike did not cycle down normally so it threw a code. Once I hit the start/stop button it shuts itself down in a predetermined sequence. I don't use the kill switch anymore. No more codes....😅. Hope that helps 👌
That was the one and only time I stopped the engine that way!!!!🙈
I'm not sure why some riders use the kill switch instead of pressing the main button (which has to be switched off in any case surely). Having said that, I almost always kick the side stand down when parking and stop the motor that way - it assists me to remember the side stand having dropped the bike by forgetting it some years ago
That was the one and only time I turned the bike off that way 🙈
I suspect the second issue was due to being out 'in the sticks' and the bikes sim could not link to the mothership. I don't have the SOS button but have read about a few such issues. can't help you on the other two either. Perhaps your bike doesn't like France!
Perhaps! It'll go into Mansell tomorrow to have the codes read.
heated jacket was totally worth its weight in gold too...yesterday was 2 degrees in the morning with frost on the seat1
I had my bike a week and the headlight failed, electrical fault that completely messed the bike up, couldn't turn on Spot Lights, heated seat, heated grips, brake light was on 100% brightness and the headlight was stuck on a 45º angle.
They replaced the headlight which did nothing and in the end turned out to be a software glitch. They had my bike for nearly 3 weeks. :)
Oh dear. I hope it's all better now and no other issues?😁
@@gsd32i still getting used to her (Britta) I've avoided the GS for years and been an XR user but I can't deny, she's a brilliant bike. No other issues as of yet.
Haven't had any of those problems but it might be worth considering a means to see and clear problem codes when on a long trip. If you already have an Android phone you are set, just buy the appropriate OBD2 adapter and the top level version of Motoscan. It's worthwhile. I use an iPhone so I bought a cheap Samsung tablet which will travel with me on the next long (15,000km) ride in July :)
I may have to ask there dealer how to do this then wow that is a long trip.👍
@@gsd32i I have a GS911 and can always help out, as I can have more than one BMW on it, think I can have 6
@@gsd32i yes, I rode half of Australia last September, this is the other half :) Look up Motoscan online.
I had that and end up having a new engine.
🤞
Why I simply want a motorbike, preferably from 15 years ago built in Japan
I think that, we all have to understand, that so much electronics on all new bikes, needs so much energy from the battery...and the battery can't afford it!
I suggest to maintain the battery frequently, avoid keeping the key close to other electronic devices (mobile phone, heated jacket, etc.) and as for the emergency button...no suggestions!!!😂
