- It's a long one! Trying to keep things simple for new BMW GS owners. In this video, I take you through the various riding modes that the""MODE" button on the right allows you to select. Then we have a look at the suspension/dtc button on the left hand side.
NOTE: Some model years may have different functions etc with the buttons.

Definately the most comprehensive description of all this technology I have come across, thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge.
Thanks very much 👍
I’m buying my new R 1250 GSA in 4 days. I’ve done one full day riding course on one a couple of months ago at the BMW Performance Center. This video is an extremely helpful reference I will be using as a supplement to familiarize myself with my new bike. Thank you 🙏
I now own a 2019 R1250 GS and a 2021 S1000 XR. Your videos have been incredibly helpful to understand all of the key electronic functions. Well done and keep the videos coming!
Thanks . 👍
Should have seen this a few days ago as it would have saved me time looking through the manual. The suspension changes were explained last year when I picked up my bike but needed a refresher so resorted to the manual. Keep up the good work Paul with these informative posts 😊
Thanks for the comments 👍
Ok! I'm 2.5 years in and I'm JUST getting to grips with this bike! NOW I understand these settings. Well done! On another note, I was offered a week's work in Riyadh and to get to Heathrow from where I live is either a) a nightmare or b) ridiculously expensive (and potentially unreliable.) So I strapped a small case to the rear and loaded up the old Kriega back pack and off we go. 106 miles and 1hr 45minutes. As you know, the bike parking at LHR is all free. T4 was great: through those huge hydraulic bollards and under cover of a flyover. The big bonus were the ground anchors! I decide to cover it (cheap cover from Amazon - had it for years) big fat hairy Oxford lock and chain - crash helmet chained to the grab handles with a bicycle lock - and off I went! Bit tricky changing outside and not sure what I would do in the depths of winter but I felt it was a big adventure and I was so excited (which makes me smile because I'm 68 this year!). Love your vids - keep 'em coming!
Hope you have a great week away.😁
Excellent, thank you for taking the time to figure this all out. Makes perfect sense, as the sales BMW boffin wants to talk to me about the suspension ahead of my test drive. Can't wait to try it now.
tyvm :)
I've gone from HD to BMW and want to leave the asphalt and go more gravelroads, wheelie and clear obstacles. This video was superb and now I can actually set up my bike the way I want. Thanks a lot
Great video very interesting and easy to follow unlike a lot of videos and the Manual 😂
Thanks for an outstanding explanation on a complex setup tutorial. Picked up my triple black today. Will watch the rest you have done...
Enjoy👍
dct,abs,msr,esa....oh my god i just wanna ride and have fun! too much electronics though for our safety. thanks for your explanation, very interesting and helpful. 👍
Great video mate, love your chart with all functions and “consequences “.😊
Thanks 🤪
Thank you for putting this video together, excellent!
Thanks again for another great video as I'm really enjoying my new bike and your information really helps 👍 best wishes Karl 😊
Very helpful video Paul, keep them coming 👌
Thanks , work is going to get in the way for the next week or so 🙈😂
Thank you , thank you , for this video. This was the info I needed , ... , so many options and I use only a few. So when I wanted to change something in the settings I forgot what and how . Very nice video.
Glad it helped 👍
Fantastic 😊 great explanation as per usual and explained in a simple way , keep the videos coming 😊
Thanks a lot 😊
Great job, actually I did forget things that I knew previously, and this was a wonderful refresher course for lazy me. As a short rider, I do enjoy the minimal suspension setting. I did do Enduro Training and forgot to deactivate the DTC while climbing a steep hill with gravel and sand. Needless to say I fell over. Thanks for effort! Greetings, Jim
Glad you are now suitably refreshed 🤪
Thank you. Picking up my new f850 gsa today. That really helped understand.
How good is this, we know we should read the manual, but you have just answered many questions so much more easily and great graph too , thanks 🙌🏼👍🏼
Appreciate the comment 👍
Great job. You buy these bikes & the dealer doesn’t know how to operate it.
All the accessories are fun.
But not necessary if you choose. Excellent bike !
Hello Paul , just fitted my colight running lights , excellent, thanks for the tip 👍
Picked up my new bike yesterday and this video has been really helpful, thanks very much 👍🏻
Enjoy 🤪
I don't normally comment. But in this case felt I just had to say a big thank you for this excellent video. You've earned that beer!
The beer was great 👍
Thanks for the informative video.
That's really helpful, thank you.
Well done. Please keep it coming. New R1250 GS owner here
Thanks, will do!
Great video tutorials! Thank you! :)
Great video. Thank you very much for sharing this information ℹ️ thumbs up 👍🏻
Thanks for watching!
Better than any manual...well done!
Thanks 🤪👍
Thanks heaps. Excellent information catch up. You've done very well. Cheers , Simon, Australia
Your welcome.
Thanks for the video. For the rider mode, I use road and dynamic a lot and rain when it’s wet. For suspension mode, road can be quite bouncy so dynamic works best for me. I often move the suspension to low when I need the extra assurance on a loaded bike in a gravel car park or when boarding a ferry or the channel tunnel train.
Thanks for the comments and input 👍
Excellent video, just come from triumph explorer . Wow thanks for the effort you put in, explain well 👍
Your welcome . 👍
That was amazing! Appreciate the detailed explanation (I am still on Pg.28 in the User Manual 🤫)
😂😂😂😂
Really Great Stuff, Thanks!
Glad it helped!
Bang on for a clear explanation and real life applications for the BMW 1250 GS wizard buttons. Enjoying my 2021 R1250 GSA on the road and bashing about at Off Road Skills in Wales on their R1250 Rallye models. Amazing what these bikes can do in whatever mode, however the programmable options do help a lot. Newly subscribed to your channel, so I will have a root around to see any content on your KTM 690R you mentioned in this video.
Thanks. With the weather we currently have here in jersey I think the Welsh hills will be a better option, even drier! 😂
Thank you for the great explanation.
Thank you, very informative.
great video, many thanks
Very helpful, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Yeah! Nice video, very tutorial and fine. Thank you ✌️
Thanks , just about to go and do one on the hill start control.👍
Perfect timing mate! Just bought GSA but cant pick it up for a few more days.
Enjoy 👍
Very informative thank you all the best
Thanks 👍
Very accurate, well described and well done :)
👍
Excellent video 👌Enjoy your beer.
Thanks, I did.😂
Thanks for the informative video. I haven't picked my bike up yet so wondered if you could tell me, if you have the riding mode in dynamic and change the ESA to road then turn the engine off, when you restart will the ESA have changed back to dynamic or would it stay in road until you manually change it, or change the riding mode please?
thanks again for the explanation
No worries!
My 2020 USA model allows turning off ABS front and back. At the BMW riding Academy on the GS you do emergency braking maneuvers on gravel with full ABS, no ABS, and front enduro ABS with no rear ABS. Option 3 was the winner!
Yes, 😂, as I mentioned schoolboy error I had downloaded the wrong manual from the internet and thought I could switch the abs off... hours later and a visit to the bmw dealer confirmed my model now doesn't have that option!!!
Great piece of content....thanks for good information.....S.F.A.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video.....
Thanks ...the beer was great too!
Thank you!
Thanks so much for this info, I was totally unaware of the throttling back part.
Btw I’m pretty sure you are over in Jersey? I go twice a year and immediately recognised it as you got to the junction of the A2 and the old station cafe.
You lucky man! I love Jersey.
Yup great place . Lots of construction work going on though at moment . Views are pretty good though 😀
Thank you I have been completely confused for a year and adjusting from the suspension button relentlessly
No I know I can program by mode
Thank you so much🤙
You
Glad I could help!
Thanks; waiting on delivery of my new (to me) R1250GSA next week, and onboarding as much info as I can. I already read the manual (the correct one! - the VIN is key to selecting it), but this was a great review.
Do you have that summary chart that you made available as a download? Ideally as a Google Doc or spreadsheet file instead of PDF? Would be great to make a customised "cheat-sheet" for the bike.
Hi Michael , enjoy the new GS . Not sure how I would do the chart thing . 🙈 quick screen shot and drop into a “GS “file on your phone for reference … ride safe 👍
Thank for the extensive tutorial. Any video on the "wheel"? Just got a new 1250 GSA and trying to figure things out. Bit overwhelming.
Hi. Appreciate the comment. The whizz wheel is pretty explanatory , click left click right , up n down...fire! Enjoy the next 1250. Loving mine🤪
Road/Auto = Shredded silk.
I have tried all the settings, max preload is tall! For reference I'm 6'2" with a 33" inseam.
I do not have eco mode, and my manual is from Germany. I will have to dig into the settings because whatever was set up in my bike makes my back hurt.
Hi sir, I was a little nervous about my DTC setting on my GS 1250. Was it on…was it off? You reassured me when you said the DTC safety system comes back on when the bike is turned off…if I understood right! Thanks, Marc, Quebec, Canada 🇨🇦 My riding season will begin very soon! 😉🏍
Enjoy the riding season 😁
Thought you can shut off abs In dynamic mode too?
RUclipsr Carl on “just the way it is” did a comprehensive coverage of this a few months ago, including discussion with motorrad to clarify the difference between all settings. Worth a look.
yup watched it 👍
Excellent vid again bud, you’re really loving the GS - BMW GS and the hairy GS 😂 Can’t beat the Germans for quality 😃 did you manage to get hold of some flush cut cutters?
😂it's on my to do board in the man cave👍
now ordered from Amazon 😂
@@gsd32i your hands will thank you 😂 not to mention the service techs come maintenance time 😂😂 oh and you need to post more videos of the pups 😉
HI, just updated my GS TFT to incude Sports Mode..now available via GS-911.....have you seen this option ?? be good to see you do a video ..
Let me check
Do you have the"Rally Package" GS?? Does the ... non Rally GS have all these riding modes!! Great vid!
Thanks, non Rally package, just ticked the option box to give me all the riding modes.
Hi again would it be possible to please send a link to download that great chart you did as I can't seem to be able to download it from your video? Cheers Karl in Oz 😊
Hi Karl, I don't actually have a link. All I have done is screen shotted in from my video and kept it on my phone for reference. It;s been a while since I looked at it and it was good to be reminded of what the things do! Ride safe.😁
@@gsd32i Great thanks for explaining that 👍 I have saved that video for future reference so no problem 😉 thanks 🙏 cheers Karl
Cool...
ABS is annoying for my bike, but something I have to live with, in enduro it dumbs it down for both the f750gs/f850gs, I believe the f850gs/gsa and the 1250gs you have the extra mode which is Enduro Pro, this completely turns off the ABS on the rear to my knowledge. And to change the suspension from one to two riders, or one and luggage, engine needs to be on as well, makes a huge difference, just done mine ready for my trip to France, one rider and luggage, with the suspension in road + dynamic you can change the stiffness on the suspension as well, for my bike at least, but for the rain + enduro mode those are set to their normal settings.
Folks have just gotta play with it and see what the bike does....I was going to video a bit of hooliganism but didn't want too crash with things turned off 😂 enjoy the tet 👍
@@gsd32i jut under two weeks until I am away, set the bike up the other day, was going to use the soft luggage from mosko moto, but it means I would have to take everything with me every time I was to break camp, that would be a lot of weight to lug around some the TET, so taking my hard lockable luggage, and will leave it in the tent whilst I go out and about, staying at the same campsite for 5 nights, as it is central in Normandy and close to the national park with some of the TET, doing 2 sections in that area, then going to visit some different sites and have downloaded some GPX files from Ride magazine for Normandy tours.
What’s the brand/model of the windshield? I want to buy it for my gs
BMW's own rallye screen.
very helpful video-- A+ !! Is it possible for you to put a link (or email) to your full chart of modes?
Have a look at this
www.advpulse.com/adv-bikes/bmw-r1250gs-and-r1250gs-adventure-review/
thank you!! keep up the great videos my friend!@@gsd32i
Hello sir. May I ask what is the windshield you are using?
Hi, its the BMW Rally screen for the GS 👍
Hi there, got the 2023 1250 GS Ralley. Question, do these run lean when all stock from factory or, is there an easy way to find out if I should make it run more rich? I live in the USA and my VIN was made in Germany. Or, will I get 100k miles on this GS if I leave it all stock and just enjoy it? Just want it to last long time.
Scotty that is way above my knowledge base....possibly try some of the GS forums.
@@gsd32i will do
I do not see the download of the chart that you made for all of the modes and features
Hi . Just screen shot it . 👍
They simplified all this in 2023. Thank God! No more watching hours of videos and days trying to understand the manual. Select Road mode, Dynamic mode and Dynamic pro and be done with it.
Always nice to have the ability to change things a bit , but thankful the menus are not as "customisable" as some manufacturers where you do need a course in menu operation to understand it all.😂
Is yours a nav6? Have you synced it to your phone & tft ? I am on my 3rd nav6 they just keep going mental skipping about not keeping any destination or routes. I tend to use google maps on my iPhone far superior to garmin!
Hi . Nope it’s a Garmin zumo xt . Routes compiled via an app called scenic app on iPhone and then sent across to the zumo . Works great .
Hi David… I think it’s a common issue with the Nav 6… 👎
In my option save yourself £400 and get the BMW Connected Cradle instead.
Gives you control over the Connected App via the whiz wheel if you like or use it as a wireless charger for your phone. ( Yes I know Ali Express ones are available for £20)
Hopefully in time, now BMW are moving away from the Nav’s they’ll develop the app and bike integration.. 🤞
love ya hints vids i learn more than reading the manual lol , could you do one on fuses ? where and how to change them 👍
Hahaha I’ll have a look but there aren’t too many fuses ……🤔
How do we get the PDF of the chart please?
You'll just have to screen shot it I'm affraid, I think I deleted the original 😁
Can you drive in the MIN setting?
Hi, yes you can, if you are referring to the suspension. I use it sometimes to help the boss get on and off 😂
@@gsd32i thanks, I am doing same, but was wondering if I can keep it in MIN without the boss on and drive...🤣
@@DavorBrisevac yes am sure you can 🤞
I cant believe you said, why would anyone have a use for ECO mode, (or words that effect) have you seen the price of fuel? 😮
Can’t put a price on smiles per miles 🫣
Pro = Programmable - I wish I had know that months ago.....I just thought it was marketing speak....for people too "pro" for regular dynamic and enduro....hooray!
You have a U/S model?
Mines a uk model. US manual is the one thats the same as my owners manual that came with the bike .
Yah, and apparently there's an extra gear after the 5th. I have nicknamed it ....6th gear.
As an American I’m curious about what a boffin is?
Boffin= Scientist in a white coat 😂
@@gsd32i Thanks. I learn something new every day.
Geez you waffle mate!
Indeed my wife says that too. But hey, not all perfect. Ride safe and have a great day. waffle waffle 😂
Probabley the wrong bike for such a small island.
You would be surprised how many big bikes are on this Island, actually a great bike for here, but I get your point. Ride safe and enjoy 👍
OMG put your hands in your pockets lol
😂
Very comprehensive but damn man get to the point…
🙈
Please stop repeating yourself! This information could have been relayed in 10 minutes. Holy cow you rattle on
Appreciate the input . Hopefully you found some of the video of benefit . Ride safe and have a great day . 👍
