- La Soufriere volcano fired an enormous amount of ash and hot gas early Monday in the biggest explosive eruption yet since volcanic activity began on the eastern Caribbean island of St. Vincent late last week, with officials worried about the lives of those who have refused to evacuate.

I'm UK Born from parents born in St Lucia Caribbean. My grandmother who died at age 107 in 2016 told me of early St Vincent volcanic eruptions of the past and told me that on her own island of St Lucia she would never live is Soufriere near the island own volcanic sulphur springs. When ever I visit St Lucia, I can see St Vincent clearly from the island. I pray for all the people of the island of St Vincent and surrounding islands, wishing that they are all safe. I could just Imagine the devastation to agriculture, water and food.

Ironically, volcanic ash makes an excellent fertilizer... Quite good for mixing into the soil and farming... Hopefully there's a few thousand more acres of land after this eruption is over... St. Vincent is quite a nice place, and will be again when the dust... Ash.. Settles...

We had that in the Philippines when mt. Pinatubo erupted way back in the 90s. Lahar it's called . it's like 10000 horses running when you hear it. It's basically sand that moves when it gets wet and gets hard like cement when it hardens.

The population of Saint Vincent is ~112,000 people. Hopefully neighboring islands and nations such as Aruba, Curaçao, Trinidad, Guyana, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Martinique.. can offer them a place to stay and hospitality.
Volcanoes are so tricky and not as predictable as people may think!... Mother Earth is doing her thing and we are all just a bunch of Ants, scrambling around on the same rock, hurdling through space & time!.... Be safe and be kind to one another!... ✌🏼

The plume has reached to almost 40,000 feet, high enough to meet the very cold air and flatten out. The video from the GEOS satellite (from geosynchronous orbit, at an altitude of about 22,000 miles) shows the plume flattening at the top of the troposphere (~33,000 feet or so), where the temperature is about -75F) and even popping into the lower stratosphere.
So will the cruises ships come help these people but only take the ones with vacs still?

I live in St Lucia which is directly north of St Vincent and it's good unless the 40 year sleeping beauty chooses to sneeze 3 times. On my part of the island there isn't even much ash but I'm choking over here so I could imagine how the Bajans and Vincys feel.

@@larsonfrederick7885 yes it is very fertile if not too much of it lays on top of the soil with nutrients in it already. Volcanic ash acts kind of like black cow on steroids but if you have several inches of it laying on top it's going to be pretty useless for anything to grow.

You realize latent heat trapped due to co2 is not the same as geothermal heat? You realize, I hope, that the sun is imparting energy from outside the earth.
