And who created this “wicked world”? Who created a world where living organisms must consume other living organisms to survive?
You believe god sacrificed himself to himself to create a loophole to save us from himself. Now that takes faith.
NDT is essentiallly saying he has no problem with a deistic god. The term god is merely a label for an unknown intelligence(s) who designed the universe. He does have an issue with theistic gods however because of all the claims associated with them. After investigation it’s quite clear these gods and their religious claims are man-made.
There have been thousands of gods and religions throughout human history who you reject. You just happen to believe one god and one religion is true.
The deistic god can vary. And your claim that he/it doesn’t care is unwarranted. Just because a deistic god doesn’t interfere it doesn’t mean he doesn’t care.
Did your god interfere to stop the countless number of deaths brought upon people via natural disastaers? Does that mean he doesn’t care?

Non-Christians never understood our standing with God.
It always comes to this verses for me and they are from the old testament Daniel 3:16-18, where Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answer the king and tells him that even if God doesn't save them from his hands, they will never bow. We as Christians never serve God for the "good" that can happen for us here on this earth, because one can have the whole world but lose his soul, but we server Him because we know He is all good, all powerful and all knowing.
Unfortunately people outside of Christianity can't seem to understand that the things they get here will never pass over. And all they can do is quantify through objects that you just switch for a new one in a week. I wonder which is sadder dying while serving your Lord and Savior or dying while trying to obtain a new toy that you will again eventually try to replace?

I'm 54, I've been living in Lisbon for 34 years. In 1755, when the great earthquake happened, Portugal was a cruel colonial super power. So maybe, people should think about that. I'm Canadian and Portuguese and I have no problem in acknowledging that at that time Portugal was a cruel colonial power, they started the Atlantic slave trade 230 years before the earthquake so maybe God was saying something? Did anyone consider that? Today Portugal is a peace loving, calm European country, the 4th safest country in the world. So who knows God's motives...

Wait ... so because the government of Portugal was cruel/colonial, God deemed it necessary to kill numerous others who had nothing to do with those policies (including children)? If God is truly all-powerful, he could have snipered any evil individuals with precision. Or heck, if he really is all-powerful and all-good, he could have revealed himself to the wicked in such a compelling way that they gave up their wickedness. Apologists often seem to conveniently forget what true omnipotence is (or severely lack imagination).

This is a masterful takedown of that argument/mentality. The problem of evil is so persuasive because of how emotionally charged it is. But there is no satisfying alternative besides a loving and sovereign God.

@Kenny Bugh It’s hilarious that I literally disagree with 100% of what you said and the only proof I could offer is “watch the video” lol. Like it seems fairly obvious by just hearing what Pastor Wilson said… he entirely refuted him.

Like the story of the one blind man.
“As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.”
John 9:1-3 ESV
The blind man didn’t previously know why he was born blind. But God had a reason. Jesus healed him and he went on to believe in him. In this case, we got to see exactly why he was born blind. But we can’t know why every bad thing happens. But God has incorporated it into his good plan for redemption.
Whether the redemption for our souls or the redemption of the earth, God’s good plan for Jesus’s sacrifice redeemed them both. All will be made well when he returns.
Your blindness can be heal too. It will require God to transform your heart and to dispose it to your desperate need for salvation that only comes from Jesus. If you seek further light on this read 2 Corinthians 4:3-6 which will tell you your God ordained condition
@Kenny Bugh So God’s Will essentially means “What God wants.” And so when I say God’s *good* will, I mean “This happened so that what God wants will be done, and that this will ultimately result in something good.”
So God either caused the earthquake himself or he allowed it to happen… either way it was to bring about what God ultimately wants. And what God ultimately wants for the world is for our salvation and the redemption of the world.
I think it could also be possible that God had nothing to do with the earthquake and it was merely a consequence of some previous event. But God still planned for it and the tragedy will either help his ultimate good will to be done or at the very least it won’t hinder his will from being done.

I like how people like Tyson think that being given the choice to “mate” (as if were just animals), with an entire half of the population of our age group is just so incredibly restrictive.

Good Ol John Stewart Mill objection. What's funny is that this objection only came in as a result of individualistic, Arminian theology coming into popularity. That's the only context in which it really carries any water. But if we truly say that all men are evil and deserving of justice, then any day there is not an earthquake is just a day of mercy and grace upon us who deserve nothing but wrath.

2. I asked something like this of my father years ago and his reaponse "that death is only bad for those that aren't saved." Bottomline EVERYONE will die, and it's the "how" he has a problem with. Regardless of how we die or when we die, we must ensure we are READY to die, so those deaths are only bad for those "not ready".

@@sterlingfallsproductions3930 And your seeming fatuation with this argument against the use language used in Scripture to express God's interaction with His creation only demonstrates that you don't understand either the original Hebrew and Greek languages that Scripture was written in, nor the concept of anthropomorphic language.
Repent and turn to Christ.
Why is death a sign of not loving? If we get what we want in the end (eternity with God or eternity without Him) then isn't death us getting what we want? Isn't the cruelty of death only cruel to those who survive and miss the deceased?
All my true family will rejoice at my death knowing that I am in Heaven with my Father. Maybe my enemies will also be happy I am dead...so win/win!

See how that works? You’re saying there is no God. I simply lack a belief in that assertion.
So your next step is to say, “oh no, I’m not asserting anything. I just have no reason to believe that the assertion ‘there is a God or god or gods’ is valid.”
But you see, I lack a belief that the reasoning by which you’re saying “there is no reason to believe in God” is valid. You need to justify your rejection of the assertions.
Please tell me why those other gods that we don’t believe in don’t exist. Because we have a justification for rejecting the existence of those other gods (yea, they are demons masquerading as gods). However, no atheist or lacktheist can even prove that Harry Potter or Darth Vader do not exist. And yet you all have the audacious ambition to pretend you can rationally reject the existence of God and all arguments that have been put forward for His existence.
You don’t believe in one less God. You merely are in denial of the only One who does exist.

Surprisingly tame coming from NDT. I mean it’s still just the normal “I can’t accept a God like that” argument. Then right before our eyes he constructs his own golden calf that he can find palatable. A deaf, mute, blind god that doesn’t care, making everything just as meaningless as not having a god.

What I can say from my current standpoint: If you have been screwed over by people in your life to the brink of your destruction and somehow come out on the other side, still alright, you look back and you see numerous seemingly coincidental circumstances and hints that guided you out of the darkness, you know that God exists!

@@toddcote4904 I've studied soteriology extensively and I find the doctrines of grace to be nowhere in the scriptures. Thats ok though we are brothers in Christ and can agree to disagree!

@@toddcote4904 In the ESV it's: "But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth." It says some manuscripts have "from the beginning" instead of "as the firstfruits." If the ESV rendering is correct, then the meaning has to do with God choosing those Thessalonians of the 1st c. to be born then in order that they might hear the Gospel (in verse 14), which is how they are called. For the Gospel is essentially calling everyone to repent and accept Jesus as Lord. The choosing has to do with them being the first generation of Christians in history "firstfruits." The choosing would not be about pre-destination. But, even if the "from the beginning" rendering is correct, that still doesn't necessitate pre-destination. If we say to a believer that he was chosen, that does not exclude others. All it says is that he was chosen. It could also be the case that God called everyone as many verses in the Bible seem to support. They simply rejected the calling and therefore could not be chosen. You could also say that because God knew who would accept the calling that he chose those. Or, you could say that God chose Christ and that we as Christians live in Christ as Paul often expressed it. In any case, there are several non-Calvinist interpretations of this verse. That is not the only theology that allows God's grace to operate. Indeed, Calvinism only confuses the matter and makes God out to be someone whom the Bible doesn't reveal to us. For example, the whole chapter of 2 Thessalonians 2 is about Paul calling Christians to stand fast in the coming trials and to not be lead astray by false teachers and anti-Christian systems of authority. What's the whole point of warning true Christians if the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints is correct? Either Paul was implicitly deceiving the Thessalonian Christians into believing that they could fall away, when in actual fact, according to Calvinism, they can't. Or, they're fully aware they can't fall away and Paul was just wasting ink and paper. Both options are nonsensical. The best explanation for the numerous passages warning Christians about things is that Christians can indeed fall away by rejecting Christ, thereby invalidating one of the key points of Calvinism.
@@SirRatiocination it depends on what he meant by fall away and it depends on whom he was talking to. I'm no calvanist, but it's clear in scripture that salvation is eternal.

I have never been able to really understand atheism, I just can't see a point to life, just exist until you don't. Everything you do ultimately doesn't mean anything. Having eternal life changes all that, Everything you do has eternal meaning.

What's funny, and sad at the same time is that morals and ethics are called into question when something bad happens. Never when something good happens. Further still if something bad happens because I would argue the whole creation groans has Romans 8 tells us, because of sin. Because God cursed the ground. Does that mean God judges certain instances and brings calamity? Yes. I don't believe the scripture says all calamity, because sin in general nevertheless brings this. Foolish wicked choices bring this. There is natural evil because the creation groans, earthquakes and floods, and tsunamis. Thus either way you look at it God exists and is moral and good, and all powerful. If he doesn't then as Doug said it's meaningless. You have no way to gauge what is right and wrong. And again Doug hitting the nail on the head, there is no fixing and situation like lisbon. If God is impersonal, that doesn't fix it. If God is atheistic God that doesn't fix it. Good words Doug

Doug, you are so wise and knowledgeable.
Tyson regularly describes aliens and science as being beyond his understanding and points to the fact that there are things we can never know because of our limitations. But despite the limitations Tyson will make truth claims about morality and other subjects only in his arguments against God. He abandons his own principals in only this one subject.

Neil's standards of good and evil are subjective and arbitrary, just like those of all who reject the only true God. "By What Standard?" seems an appropriate question/book recommendation here.

People would still rape other people whether God exists or not so I don't know why you made that connection. Perhaps you and I won't but the answer is not an absolute "No" like you said since rapist exists so from there, your argument falls apart.
The question should be:

The answer is "no" since you said so yourself: If our ideas are simply subjective, rape can either be good or evil depending on perspective. Animals rape each other all the time so there really is nothing objectively wrong with it. If it benefits you and you have the power to do so to get away with it, why not? You can murder, rape, or steal from someone else since, from your perspective, it's "good" for you. Why care if it's "bad" for someone else? That's just their perspective and you have yours. And that's the problem with that worldview if our idea of good and evil is ultimately subjective.

We Christians agree that you can be completely arbitrary without God. What we are asserting is that you cannot justify your assertion “rape is wrong” without an eternal moral law that proceeds from an eternal personal God.
In the final analysis, there is nothing wrong with stardust bumping into other stardust, meatsacks oppressing other meatsacks, and protoplasm-coated bones violating other protoplasm-coated bones. All your emotionally charged moral complaints against God are imaginary - that is to say, not real. I thought we weren’t supposed to believe in things that don’t exist?

But what if you have subjective reasons to rape someone? You point to not doing rape when it is equally viable in doing so since it's ultimately subjective. I may have subjective opinions about rape and that I shouldn't do that but what authority do I have to say to one person that they shouldn't rape other people? If their subjective view is raping other people is good for them, what authority do I have on myself to be against that? Simple. I need to have power and influence to stop them but so can they. If they have the power and authority to do what they want, no matter how immoral it looks to you, they can do that. If you have the power and influence, you can impose your own set of morality onto others. And that's the problem. Might is right and morality is just a matter who has the most power to enforce it if there's no standard outside of us. It leads to totaliariasm and tyrannical rule.

@@jaclo3112 I think I largely agree. The common ways for theologians to, as you say, dodge the problem of evil often come down to redefining "good" as "whatever God does". As I said, I think that just makes the term meaningless for humans.

I guess Tyson doesn’t notice any overwhelming evidence of design in the world, not only in the cosmos but here on earth but also within his own body and also sees no correlation between cause-and-effect with him being an affect that was caused by something and not just evolution. As always, these guys who always come up with the strawman arguments have some kind of sexual sin in their life that they don’t want to be accountable for. Romans 1 really explains well what we’re dealing with here with people not wanting there to be a God so that they can get away with as much wickedness as possible.
So the inefficient and deadly reproductive system of majority of female mammals, including humans, was designed? that the majority of the environment on the planet and in the universe is deadly to life was designed? what idiotic and incompetent designer would willingly design such stupidity?
Before the big bang there was no matter , no time , no energy, nothing , but a pure empty infinite void .
Which means that there is nothing which can create the big bang .
And there is also no time for the big bang to be created .
And , even if there was, is impossible to build itself in a perfect functional system from random construct .
So there must be something beyond time in order for the big bang to be started .
And there is something needed to build the particals required to create the explosion .

I got some major question about the New Testament. Specifically, Paul, and the books of Acts and Romans. Are Paul’s teachings divine: by that I mean, are they given to him from the Lord or the Lord’s Messengers?

When you become a christian you get a special superpower allowing you to know and read the mind of their gods while simultaneously claiming "...a man does not know what is in God..." when they get cornered by a non believer who points out the irrational and illogical actions and commands of their gods in their bible.
It's all an endless shell game. No one really knows if God is under the shells or not, yet we play the game as if it does. I've yet to see god. Most people I know havent either. But a majority of people have faith God is under there, and tell stories of people who found God under the shells once.
Possibly, he knows this because a Maximally Great Being (which necessarily possesses the attribute of omniscience) cannot fail to exist.
This is also the guy who said, when asked for proof that we went to the moon, said "We know they did because the amount of fuel in the space shuttle was the amount they needed to get to the moon."

When he says enlighten Christians he's referring to historic believers from the enlightenment era, as Newton, that was a physicist brought up in the Catholic tradition but expended his adulthood in a time period were humanism and scientifical thinking was developing

Neil Tyson is the poster child for the age of the expert. I'm not making an anti-intellectual argument here. I love science and exploration. But too many people assume just because someone has a high level of expertise in one area that insight extends into all others. As a society, we have deferred to the experts to the point where they are the priesthood of the new age. Slap a couple letters behind someone's name and people automatically assume they are bright.
Tyson knows quite a bit about astrophysics, and I will defer to him on matters related to galaxies and star formation, but it appears he has read his own reviews because he seems to speak on every subject under the sun with authority. He is in that "rock star" class of experts who love the camera and have a holier than thou attitude toward those he sees as inferior. I was a facilitator for many years and I used to get students like him. I used to refer to what they engaged in as wanting to take their brain out for a walk. My response was always pretty straight forward. I'm not impressed by titles, degrees, or rank. Want to impress me? Lick your ear. When you can do that, I'll be impressed.
Nothing is good, nor evil, without a moral authority to create a moral law, based on a moral standard, AND the authority, a moral standard, and a moral law would need to be transcendent for good & evil to be objective.
Another rebuttal to this fallacious problem of evil argument. This argument cherry picks only some attributes of the biblical God (e.g. all good, all powerful) in order to make the argument itself, but there are more biblical attributes than just those.
God is all knowing. He knows the end from the beginning. This alone upsets the argument's premises.

He suffered and died for our sins so that we, who believe in Him by faith, receive forgiveness of our sins, are set free from slavery of sin, and receive eternal life.

So how do we call on Him? Scripture is very clear:

So there is no problem of evil, if evil doesn't exist.
However the same Scripture that this so called argument uses to describe attributes of God, also says that death is not the end. So in the real world that we live in, where small children or babies have suffered and died, it is not the end but the beginning of eternal life with God, with no more pain, no more tears, no more crying. After millions of years the very small momentary suffering evaporates into nothing in view of eternity. So there is that view that I hold, or the suffering child just had bad luck of the draw (or as Richard Dawkins put it "blind, pitiless indifference"). Those are the two options. I take the former.
