I was church disciplined at one time. The church 's continual prayers for me to repent we're inventually answered. I thank God for a faithful word centered church. This was over 20 years ago and have to give many thanks to them.
If we could boil down the last 18 months of evangelicalism.... "Caesar put on his boots and at that point, a whole host of our pastors started licking them"...

The wokeness that you mention in many churches really hits home. I attended a very large, increasingly woke evangelical Bible church about 8 years ago. The unworthy types of music encroaching into every type of service eventually drove me out, capped off by the appointment of a new, young senior pastor. When the “racist” narrative fully took hold in 2020, I heard this pastor preaching online (yes, they suspended services because of the virus for over half a year) and mentioned that racism “would not be tolerated for a second” at that church. I wanted to raise my hand and ask HOW racism would not be tolerated? How would it be identified? By what definition? KKK hoods worn to the “traditional” service?
Funny, but I had never before heard anyone at that church openly singling out any sin for non-tolerance before. Ever. Homosexuality? Naw.

Similar observations here. I eventually found a church that realized working with humans is messy, hard work and works to fight the good fight of faith regardless. God being the one we seek to please makes it even messier at times. In the old testament, wise kings appointed officials and judges after repeatedly admonishing them to be careful to judge justly. Many churches, often megachurches, have been the test market for wokeness years to decades before the full product was unleashed upon us all. So many pastors and outspoken laymen regurgitate statements like, "everyone [but me] get's 'do not judge' wrong" yet then fail to follow through and apply judgement consistently or to themselves.
Even now, someone decrying a lack of due process will often receive a "well, actually..." response that focuses on context specific details, yet completely ignores the spirit of what is being said or the impact of judging hastily without righteousness. Most of these churches are in it for money, prestige, and lucrative future deals much like government people working to get their cushy retirement job.

The church congregation to which I refer sports a (many) multi-million dollar “campus,” which is only occupied to any significant extent 1 1/2 days a week. The team of pastors live fairly lucrative lifestyles, and the sermons are now milquetoast platitudes. If any “challenges” are issued at all, they are generalized and unmeasurable as to the results.

No, I was referring to a rather ridiculous article written by a pastor up here on The Gospel Coalition Canada website where he made up a hypothetical pastor named “Billy” who wasn’t very “nice”. It’s worth reading to have a laugh. It’s titled, “A Word to American Christians from a Pastor in Canada.” The irony being that the pastor who wrote the article is actually American and is lecturing Canadian pastors on how to be more Canadian and not influenced by American pastors.

Has Doug done a podcast/article on the Space Trilogy by C.S Lewis? He really should if he hasn't yet. Absolutely fantastic, life-changing and extremely pertinent. Without giving too much away (I wish everyone would read these books and I don't want to spoil it) I think it's very telling how those who are in the end, revealed to be truly evil, are called the N.I.C.E. (National Institute of Coordinated Experiments).
N.D. Wilson discusses somewhat the "Space" Trilogy in the "Stories are Soulfood" podcast, but not at that length. But good point to remember: NICE is evil.
That Hideous Strength should be held above Brave New World and 1984. One would think from his insider description Lewis was actually an active participant before he converted.
@@ryanmckenzie3627 Orwell himself praised the book but criticised the fact that Lewis "put God into the picture". I think that's same main reason why it isn't held above other similar (secular) books today.

Maybe we need to start working on a new concept of nice - "gonzo nice".
The biggest sin in any church is when someone decides they disagree with anyone at church. And instead of keeping it to themselves , actually come to a brother or sister and say I don’t agree with this behavior or this action. Yes, openly disagree and lands sakes- your can be given the door. I have a tee shirt from that experience.

American government is a Republic. That means that the sovereign of the government IS the people. The president is merely am elected representative to execute the will of that Sovereign.
Therefore the "Christian" assertion that "Caesar" equates with the president whom all Americans must obey is nonsense.
Obey Caesar, so you are biblically obligated to obey the presidency. This is fundamentally based on a total misunderstanding, intentional or otherwise.
The US federal government, regardless of what it says on paper, is an authoritarian police state.
We don't have any actual say in what the feds are doing.

📖Everything one needs to know about Romans 13, in historical context...the very same St. Paul who wrote the passage..also lived it ...but still.. the Saint lost his head to that sword given to Caesar which "he welds not in Vain" ...its certainly is not welded in vain to be sure...but welded with lots of pain.. nonetheless...and so much for Romans 13...

Reading many of the comments here is like listening to the members of the session arguing the reasons for shutting the church doors to "protect" the parishioners. It would seem that the point of Mr Wilson's essay was missed entirely by some of the respondents. To quote a not so nice movie line, "what we have here is a failure to communicate" and it's not the fault of Mr Wilson. Many "minds" were already made up about who is "really" nice and who isn't and it usually corresponds to their political, rather than their spiritual persuasion.

Some sensitive pastors/leaders see certain circumstances as easy bridges to reach people who are notoriously difficult to reach. For some reason they can never see that these people will cut the ropes half way through their bridge walk when they realize they’re being played. Accommodation never works. Leave the gap be and keep Christ the bridge.
Great video, agreed. But I'm confused about your reference to Luke 14:31-34. In context, it doesn't seem like Jesus is commanding us to count our troops, he is commanding us all individually to examine whether we are able to follow him fully. It ends with him saying we must renounce all our possessions and salt losing its flavor must be thrown out. If you can expound on this, that would be helpful because I've heard it referenced before.

Fr. Mullcahy comment on their dining al fresco. When Hawkeye asks the Padre to join them, he declines, eventually confessing that it's because of the stench.
When BJ reminds Fr. Mullcahy that Jesus ate with the lepers, Fr. Mullcahy says, "He was an exceptionally good sport."
I think Jesus wants us to be nice, to an extreme, all of the time. To hurt anyone's feelings, even for a good reason, is wrong.
Now, I choose to be a bad Christian from time to time, spitting out sarcasm. But, I expect my clergy to be uber-nice.

They turned being nice into an idol. When did being nice become a requirement for salvation? Never! John was a jerk, Isaiah, Moses, etc. With deception being so high a person standing in Truth must be abrasive and harsh in their delivery to some because that is all they will understand... or, it's when they need to wake them up.

You meant to ask, does he qualify as an elder, or bishop. Those, as Paul lists to Timothy, are the "formal training " necessary to teach God's word.

Recently it has got to the stage where I have challenged my LBGT friends, by asking if they believe God ought to apologise for Sodom and Gomorrah. Ne Timeas.
What could be more nice than helping someone to seek salvation through Jesus Christ for their eternal soul? The unholy always call the gospel "hate", but it's the absolute opposite.
Can some explain some of this in layman’s terms. It’s far too complicated for me to understand.
Doug is saying, I think, that many Churches have a double standard when it comes to what sins they consider to need disciplining. Because of outside sources, Journalists, universities, etc, which together create the "Zeitgeist", or cultural spirit, the tendency is to discipline "left-wing" sins; sexual promiscuity, homosexuality, less than "Right-wing" sins; bigotry, racism, etc. Over time this practice make churches drift away from biblically based doctrine and practice.

@@maxheadroom74 Yes, but Doug points out how that goes both ways, and he points out that currently it is leftwing sins that has the greater cost for the church if they discipline them.

Go back to 11:15 to about 12:00 and see if it isn't more prominent for churches because of pressure from the media and cultural nonsense to let things go on the left and call out people on the right, for example, such things as "racism" (a lot more rare in fact than the media would have you believe), in essence, moving the church left-ward, which is happening as he says. Check it out. Sometimes I'm wrong, of course, but not this time I don't believe.
DOUG: You make an excellent point here, BUT.......when you talk about "scripture being constant", alarm bells begin to ring. Muslims claim their scripture is constant: by which they mean that the scriptures are to be read (not necessarily understood!) in Arabic, and mean exactly what they say. There is even a Sura in the Koran 3:5ff which 'privileges' a fundamentalist reading of the texts, over exegesis and hermeneutics. Fortunately, our Christian scriptures (Tanakh and New Testament) do not contain a single 'internal' verse which demands they be read literally. Thus Judaism and Christianity allow for real scholastic study of our texts, even to the point of all the scholarship undertaken over the past century-and-a-half. If we do choose to read our scriptures literally, then that IS just that: a CHOICE. It is not a requirement. This does not mean that our scriptures are not constant: they constantly testify to the existence of a loving Creator God, who wishes to be in relation with us, throughout our history and our evolution. Jesus of Nazareth added nuance through his teaching on the Kingdom and Kingship of the God he called 'Father'. I am a homosexual Christian, and have shared life with a wonderful gentle atheist for almost forty years. I do not attend any church (though raised within the Church of England, by a Scottish Episcopalian mother); but am furious about the 'Gospel-of-being-nice', which appears to be how the English bishops interpret the message of Jesus. No metaphysics, no sin, and definitely no eschatology! The 'Gospel-of-Niceness' does not do justice to the good news taught by Jesus of Nazareth: and yet the English bishops seem to consider that was all there was to it.
"nice" is good in peace time ... but, these are not peaceful times :(
The word nice actually means "mindlessly agreeable". Most people are mindlessly agreeable, hence, a majority of Western citizens appear to accept vaccine mandates and vaccine passports without even questioning this assault on our Creator given human right to eat, have shelter and clothing, to earn an income or socialize with our community.
So all these nice citizens do as they're told and, sadly, believe themselves virtuous for doing so. Mindless citizens are an obstacle so big that only God's truth can remove it, and He's not returning till about 2030.
In the meantime, let's all be truthful and kind, not merely nice and, while it might get us csilenced, fined, imprisoned or worse...at least, at the end, we'll be with Jesus!
I've always gone to Pentecostal churches and I feel like they''re a lot like the evangelicals. The one I grew up with was okay, but since moving cities and moving to a different church I feel like the church I'm at is on the bad side of niceness - they're too nice. The Pastor was preaching about bitterness and how it's wrong (which I agree), but went as far as to say "Don't hang around people that are bitter, it is contagious, get them out of your life" and I thought this was really heartless. I thought "Don't bitter people need salvation too? If we just give up on them, they might not find the love of God which would transform their hearts." Also, I don't think he knew the irony in his sermon in that he was being quite bitter - he said "If you have an conspiracy theories about the end of the world, at the end of the service if you see me in the foyer, DON'T come and tell me about it" and he laughed - but I thought - isn't that a bitter way of thinking LOL. He also was criticising the Christians in church who didn't raise their hands during worship, and I felt like he was just trying to homogenise the ways of worship in church, but I thought it's quite dangerous to discount someone's connection to God through their outward actions in worship. I've known plenty of Christians who would jump around, cry and raise their hands to the heavens with full outwardly enthusiasm - only to fall away from church and God - and get involved in things like partying, other religions (like buddhism) and even one now reads tarot cards and is a "spiritual guide" in New Zealand now- and she was one of the most outwardly enthusiastic preachers in my old church! So I thought, it's not if you lift your hands in church or yell "AMEN!" when the Pastor is on fire that makes your faith strong. Anyway, he sort of put me off the church a little - only because before that particular sermon - I thought this church has nice people but it's almost like fake niceness. I heard from a friend that attends that his connect group was slandering and making fun of those that aren't vaccinated, and there was no correction in this behaviour by their Connect Group leader. It sort of felt the behaviour they were trying to correct in that church is like "You should raise your hands during worship! Otherwise you don't know God or are not on fire for him!", instead of the bickering and gossiping within the church and other ungodly behaviour. They were focusing on correcting behaviours which aren't really an issue - if someone prefers to close their eyes and silently focus on God - how is that not just as faithful and and trusting to God than other ways of worship - people have different personalities and different ways of doing things.
Will we worship (obey) God's Law or will we continue to bow down to the defacto corporate STATE and its many roman babylonian statutes code and mandates?

Our church shut down for fear of 2 of the members grandfathers being exposed to Corona. Our Pastor, a man with zero stones, and absolutely no wisdom and discernment, is still drawing in new people asking them to respect him as a man. I couldn't make this up if I tried. Lol.
I don’t get it.. Corona virus has killed mostly grandparents, why is shielding them from exposure not wise?

Most Christians who believe God's word would have isolated the sick and the vulnerable instead of doing the unscientific thing of putting all the healthy people at risk via lockdowns.

Interesting that Wilson considers the 'cult of being nice (which I think is a good thing), is more lamentable than the systemic racism, individual racism, and unwokeness, that has been a staple of Evangelical churches like the SBC, since their founding by slaveholders in the 1800s. I wonder if He thinks Eternal Sovereign God heard his spiel, and agrees with him? And worse, does he think he will not be held accountable for the naked Christian nationalism that he uttered? I'm so happy that opinions like this are always subject to the judgement and justice of Eternal God, who will not be mocked nor ignored by the unwoke.
Are you lamenting the "systemic racism" of the 1800's? Me too. BTW, I've been reading Doug Wilson for more than 20 years and have yet to hear him mention "Christian nationalism."

@@thaos3228 thanks. I didn't know about his recent activities, but it was evident in his previous utterances. And his defense of American Slavery along with John MacArthur's similar sentiments, was heard and will surely be judged by Almighty God.

The book “the case for christian nationalism” says that marriage between different ethnics is not good. Yikes! Doug is also very prideful. I have been telling my friends to stay away from his teaching.
