Sure ... but not every player voting agreed that Sales' slider is #1 and deGrom' fastball is 9th. Each player had their opinion too. Only thing conclusive about this list is that a higher percentage of the players who did vote, thought they have a harder time with Sales' slider than deGrom's fastball. If every voting player agreed with this list 100% then there is no room for debate. Right?
A good two-seamer is the perfect old man pitch because that tiny bit of late movement means you don't have to overpower hitters to get swings & misses. Colon is proof that if you can hit your spots at 89-91 MPH with a two-seamer, you can stay in the league for 25 years.
My thoughts exactly! I didn't think that much movement was even possible at that velocity. That one he threw to Odubel Herrera in May at 105.1 mph was absolutely insane! Once he learns to control all that movement at 100+ mph and continues to improve his slider, then I agree...Unhittable
My neighbor threw batting practice for the cardinals and actually played for their minor league system in the 70’s/80’s. When I asked him about hicks he said “he finds control, he could be better than Chapman.”
Degroms fastball keeps getting better and better. 98 and 97 in this video but last week he was hitting 101 in the 9th. Insane how as he ages into his 30s he keeps adding velocity I can't think of anyone else ever who can say the same.
@@counterfit5 wow, what a big sample size. totally proves your argument. stop defending the cheaters and just stay quiet. iI can't believe fans of the most pathetic team in sports are still talking when the only WS they've won they had to cheat for.
Chill lmao. The investigation proved that they didn’t cheat in the postseason or on the road. The only thing they did was that their replay guy decoded signs during the game and then updated the signs during the game. They only cheated (unknowingly) sometimes when there was a runner on second. Btw the replay guy did that on his own (wasn’t told to do it by management or ownership) and none of the players even knew it was happening.
Great editing. Really emphasized the velocity behind these fastballs, which in turn makes the breaking stuff that much more impressive. All too often there's an overuse of slow motion by sports producers. While that does a good job of showcasing some aspects, we really do lose all grasp of speed and movement in real-time. Ninety-five plus is just stupid fast. Again. Great editing.
It’s amazing what these pitchers are able to do with the ball. Hitters have a few milliseconds to decide where to swing and the break these guys can get is crazy. The well disguised off speed pitch is underrated.
Tbh the only reason Jordan Hicks can throw the 100mph sinker is because of Yadiar Monila behind the plate. Otherwise I’m not sure who else could catch that
I knew Treinen would be a star after we traded him. Doolittle’s really good, but we lost Treinen as well as one of the best pitching prospects in the minors, kind of a let down.
Would definitely argue Morton's curveball could easily be on this list. I've seen him throw some so nasty that the ball runs in and hits batters after they whiff on it
Fond memories of the Pedro Martinez changeup. I can only imagine trying to adjust from a 95mph pitch to an 83mph pitch when he arm is moving at same speed. Wipe out
Kyle Hendricks: Changeup, Clayton Kershaw: Curverball, Kyle Gibson: Slider, Aroldis Chapman: Fastball P.S, im a Twins fan so I know that Gibson's slider is filthy. He had a under .100 average against it all of last year.
After seeing the first fastball on this list I thought Chapman might be on here and I'm shocked Kershaws curve isn't on this. I was actually happy to see some younger maybe not as well known unless he's a pitcher in your favorite teams division players on this list
Random but idk what's more amazing..Hitting a home run off an elite mln pitcher or throwing a filthy pitch like these guys do every game..just astonishing
A's fans, from the 90s until now, knew if we were up after the 8th Inning, that meant Dennis Eckersley "the Eck", was coming in, which meant we would see the "backdoor slider", which meant the game was over. Everyone called it his slow knuckleball. Roy Halliday and Mike Mussina’s spot on a dime 75-80 mph Knuckle Curves Juan Guzman period from 1991-1993. I still don’t even know what he threw because it defied physics.
About half the time, the [TOP TEN NASTIEST PITCHES] graphic is placed right over the plate so you can't actually see the entire trajectory of the pitch. Other than that, it's pretty good.
Hicks' sinker (#6) probably the hardest to hit. Not only leaving a mach 1 vapor trail, but has sooo much movement too! Sales' slider looks nasty, but his unorthodox and lanky style adds confusion. (Try to hit off Linda Blair while her heads spinning around and pea soup is shooting out of her mouth.)
As if it was gonna be anything but the sale slider. Chris Sale probably has the best 0-2 pitch in history. That slider is untouchable and it always been
Sale's slider is just as nasty Johnson's. If he had the Big Unit's velocity, Sale would hands down be the best pitcher in all of baseball... and I'm an Cleveland fan saying this.
I'm sure professional batters may have an answer to this, but I'm curious why you couldn't have a pitcher(s) who are consistent at throwing strikes into the inside corners of the strike zone. It may not make the game fun, but I would guess that it might reduce scoring/run opportunities for batters?

How does Hicks throw that fast with that much break on it.
Hicks gets that much break because he throws it so hard (high spin rate)
I understand that this was voted by people who face the pitches, but Hicks' sinker is the one I'd want to face the least
