      I'm with you. So often there's an "all-or-nothing" mindset that says if you aren't building a top-tier rig, you may as well not bother building anything at all. It's frustrating.

    Love the focus on use-case. Most youtubers and folks in the comment section think anything less that the fastest is a waste of money, and you should just "save up longer". I've even seen comments along the line of "if you can't afford a 4090 and a high-end cpu to drive it, you should focus on a better career instead of gaming".
    I actually get a kick out of how much value I can extract out of a build, for a particular use case. Anybody can get a great result if money isn't an object. It takes thoughtful analysis and planning to do so on a budget.

When I got back into it and did some research, I couldn't believe how my pc was still so upgradeable. I'm saving a lot of money. As a gaming dad I agree with your perspective.
    I have a similar situation where I just don't see the value in moving on to am5 yet.
    I found an xtx RX 6800 for around 350 US, I also picked up a Ryzen 5700x3d for 200 US.
    What has been a real bummer is finding a worthwhile replacement for my ASRock steel legend B450 mobo.
    I'm not sure it'd be worth it to be able to make use of Gen 4 nvme, especially for the type of games I play.
    Aside from that I think it's perfectly fine to build a new am4 based system with how you're handling the extra hardware.

    • @tektoc

      I have to admit, in real-world use I struggle to see a significant difference between a Gen 3-4 NVME and a SATA 3 SSD, even after using them back-to-back. I'd be surprised if the difference between Gen 3 and 4 is discernible for anything other than huge file transfers.

    I have the same mindset. I just bought my AM4 build last year with the 5700x + b450m tufgaming bundle at a very cheap price and added the 3060 12gb + 3200 MT/s 32GB ram with 850W PSU on a cheap case. I mainly play VR games on PC and because of that I recently upgraded my GPU to a 4070ti Super only and sold the old one to offset the cost. I am able to play most of my preferred VR games with no issue. I usually stick to 72hz for most slow paced VR games, but a lot of popular VR shooters I can play at 120hz on my quest headset with no issues. This build already exceeded my needs and not yet planning to go further for quite some time.

    If you aren't planning to eventually upgrade it, sure, that makes sense. Having to upgrade mobo cpu and ram will just never be as cost effective as just a drop in cpu upgrade. I would honestly just save my budget until i can afford the am5 system, the main upgrade is usually the gpu and it'll make a mich bigger difference with a more up to date cpu. This afterall isn't a life necessity, you can just keep saving towards it until you feel the budget is cost effective. The am5 platform is barely at its first generation, the upgrade options will be as plentiful as am4 was.

  • @maxwellsmart3156
    @maxwellsmart3156 14 дней назад

    I would have maybe gone cheaper with a 650W PS and a Ryzen 5 5500. The smaller PSU because the 6750XT is max 250W and your gaming suggests that it wouldn't come close. The 5500, while missing 16 MB of L3, is monolithic and could possibly support DDR4 4400. Otherwise, that is some solid strategy, and it seems people fail to factor in the resale of the older parts.

    • @tektoc
      @tektoc  14 дней назад

      My metric for the PSU was actually: "best priced, 80+ gold rated, name brand of 650 watts or more". The Cooler Master was on sale and won on that metric. I'd have had no objection to a 650-watt if I could have found one cheaper, but when the cost is the same or similar, I'll always go with the bigger capacity for future-proofing.

    If the PC you're building now has the power to play the games you want, and run the programs you want, and you aren't keeping up with the Jones' trying to play all the latest and greatest titles day one, AM4 is perfectly fine. I built a PC around a 5600X3D and (at first) an Arc a750, before upgrading to an RX 7800 XT. (Funnily enough, I rarely upgrade that quickly, but I happened to see one at an INSANELY good deal, and my Intel card was behaving badly with my monitor, so.) It does everything I want it to to, and will undoubtedly serve me well for the next 3-5 years, which is when I will choose an all new build. I prefer a "one and done" kind of mentality when I build my stuff; I want it to work, and I want it to stay working for a while.
    Besides, there are people who are still rocking Sandy Bridge--if it fulfills their needs, and they don't feel the need to upgrade, why tell them otherwise? Let people enjoy the tech they have at their disposal.

      @tektoc  3 месяца назад

      I totally agree with this. I think that if you are on a budget (and really, how many of us aren't?) the biggest favor you can do yourself is to really understand your computing/gaming needs and buy to match the need. I think a lot of people way overestimate what they really need and end up spending more than is necessary.
      I like to tinker, it's really my only hobby, so I'm happy to upgrade when I feel I need to. I do see the attraction of "one-and-done" for an awful lot of people, tho.

    With all if that being said, here are some truths I will have to work through.
    1) Should I find a good deal on a better GPU I know I'll have to upgrade the PSU. 2) If I upgrade to a better CPU, I'll probably also have to upgrade the PSU.

    Is it possible that the new rig uses less power than old? And how would the AM4 compare with the 5.
    I build an AM4 3 years ago. Then last XMAS I build a similar one for the Mrs to help her do photo processing.
    Bear in mind our old systems were Xeon 5160 at 3GHz, 24Gb DDR2 300MHz ram and old Nvidia quadrature 260. Heck - even a Pi4 was quick compared to that.
    Because we have two similar systems (she has more NVMe drives for the photo processing, I have larger RAM and disk for K8s and Plex).
    I should measure the power drain of old and new systems. But for sure the 12 core peak 4GHz 5600G has lower TDP than a 3GHz Xeon 5160. The AMD sure processes a lot quicker too :-)
    If something breaks we have some common platforms to cannibalise- assuming processor doesn't rust in both of them at same time ;-)

    • @tektoc
      @tektoc  3 месяца назад

      One of the reasons I build almost all AMD is the platform lifecycle is so long that parts interchangeability makes upgrades easy and inexpensive.
      To answer your question, the only difference in power consumption between my old PC and new is in the new graphics card. The 6750 XT has a 250-watt TDP versus the old 5700 at 180 watts.
      Using the PSU calculator at pc-builds.com, it appears that an AM5 system with DDR5 RAM uses no more or less power than an AM4 system, as long as you stick to a CPU with the same TDP. An AM5 system with an R5 7600 (65-watt TDP) has the same maximum draw as my current PC, but if I go to a 7600X (105 watts) then, of course, the power draw is 40 watts higher.
      There doesn't seem to be an argument to make either way between AM4 and AM5 when it comes to power consumption. Really, in a gaming PC, by far the single biggest draw is the GPU, so if efficiency is a concern that's the first place to look.
      For a super-efficient AM5 PC you couldn't do much better than a 65-watt AMD APU (like the Ryzen 5 8600G - the updated version of the AM4 5600G you are using). You get solid processing and graphics with a bare-minimum power draw. That said, for gaming, the APU won't outperform even a modest discrete graphics card.

    If you're going to be selling off your aging parts, building a complete PC out of them is definitely the way to go. That way you're not just selling to the people who know how to build one and can shop around more, but rather the parents who are looking for an affordable Minecraft/Roblox/Fortnite PC for their kid.

    • @tektoc
      @tektoc  3 месяца назад

      Yeah, this is very true. I find it's hard selling parts locally, and eBay is inefficient after shipping and eBay's fees. Build a second PC and sell it is the way to go where I am.

    It's not smart to buy non PCIe 5.0 motherboard when next gen cards are confirmed to have reduced interconnects on Northridge and south bridge.
    We are now looking at possibility of PCIe 5.0 x4 or x8 setups being only avaible upgrades in 2026-202x cycle. It's already inside the rtx 4050&4060 laptops utilizing extremly cut down version of Gad107 die of the direct succesor of rtx 3050 sku from entry level and office desktops.
    I am still stubbornly holding on my 5950x with rtx 3090 untill something better comes up.

    If money was a restrain then no, it wasn't a waste of time and money since AM4 cpus are still amazing even now and will be for quite a while. If money wasn't a restrain then I'd say that it was a little foolish to go for AM4 since AM5 offers a better upgrade path. Both would be a valid option, but if money doesn't hold you back AM4 now is bigger waste of money in the future.
