Good point. I believe Joey and Ronnie recorded a duet. And of course Ronnie's ex-husband, Phil Spector, produced a Ramones album. Some say over produced.@@BGNOLA
The Ronettes were my favorite girl band in 9th grade…every song is so good, her voice was beautiful & unique. Thank you for these girl songs from the 60’s, you just can’t beat this era of female singers.👍👏👏👏🌸🌸🌸🌸💜💜
A female singer from the 50’s and 60’s who had quite a few hit songs was Connie Francis. Three of her songs I can think of are Stupid Cupid, Who’s Sorry now, and Lipstick on Your Collar
Someone you haven’t covered in a while, Bruce Springsteen. His mother passed away this past Wednesday at the age of 98 having suffered from dementia the last 10 years. Adele Springsteen supported Bruce in his youth, buying him his first guitar when money was tight. She continued to support him her whole life. Bruce wrote a great song about her I think you would enjoy, The Wish.
For more of that Wall of Sound from producer Phil Spector, check out The Crystals song, He's A Rebel. Darlene Love sings the lead even though she wasn't a member of the group. I forget the story of how that happened though.
RONNIE!! LOVED her with The Ronettes and loved her background vocals in Eddie Money's Take Me Home Tonight (I think ya'll have already gave that one a listen) - but, her voice is ALWAYS a stand-out!! HUGS, YA'LL!!
Such a majestic group! Check out their song, "Baby, I Love You." The channel, Radio Wollaton, does a great stereo remix of the song. Beautiful vocals and arrangement! 💯👍❤️
My three favorite girl groups of the 60s are the Supremes, the Ronettes and the Shangri-las. The Shangri-las you've only hit once but they had a lot of good songs: (Remember) Walking in the Sand, Right Now and Not Later (one of my personal favorites), and Give Him a Great Big Kiss.
Phil Spector's "wall of sound" was the best. Always knew when a Spector song came on the radio. Very distinctive production. P.S. Girl groups started fading out when The Beatles burst on the scene. Groups from Motown hung on, though they were pretty much the exception.
En Vogue was the bridge between old-school girl groups and new girl groups. En Vogue has a video, Giving Me Something He Can Feel, which pays tribute to those throwback groups.
This girl group was a staple at the old Murray the K shows here in Brooklyn in the middle 60's. I had the pleasure of seeing them perform 3 or 4 times at these show. Trust me, the boys loved them like crazy. The best of days man.
The Marvelettes, Orlons, Darleen Love, Mary Wells, Shirelles, Martha & the Vandelas, The Supremes, The Miracles, Dee Dee Sharp, Cilla Black, Bo Diddley!
Ronnie had a unique and beautiful voice. Girl groups from the 50s and 60s were fabulous! My favorite was Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Dancing in the Streets was their big hit.
Oh thank you, thank you, thank you. Again, teen age crush. I love ya, Ronnie. Phil Spector production. "I Can Hear Music" is another great tune. A sense of family is somehow involved with these groups. Thanks.
I like this female group from the then Phil Spectre base. 'Be my Baby' and 'Baby I love you ' are two famous songs by them. Another good similar group is the Velvelettes and some good songs they did were 'Needle in a Haystack' and 'Really saying something'-Colin Ward.
I only knew "Be My Baby" and "Sleigh Ride" by the Ronettes, but this is great, too! I can really hear her influence on Amy Winehouse and Bernadette Peters.
The classic Phil Spector mono Wall of Sound. This is where Sonny and Cher got their earliest break! Ronnie Spector had a HORRENDOUS life living with Phil Spector. Such an iconic voice- for a minute in 1963 they were the top female vocal group and then along came The Supremes! Check out some of the 70s girl groups:- The Three Degrees, Labelle, Pointer Sisters, Sister Sledge, First Choice, The Honeycone. and of course the 70s Supremes after Diana left! they all recorded. some classic tunes and are worth listening to!
The coolest girl group that you played once is The Shangri-las. They wore leather pants and boots and they were everything! I think you played either Leader of the Pack or Remember (Walking in the Sand). I like I Can Never Go Home Anymore. Heartbreaker!!!
When I was 10 years old I fell madly in love with Ronnie! I can still remember the first time I heard "Walking in the Rain" on my little transistor radio. "Baby, I Love You" is another great song.
Was Just thinking of the Ronettes after You Guys just Reacted to more Dusty Springfield! Both from our Transistor Radio-listening days in the early '60s. Love It! Great Reaction! :)
I wasn’t born in the sixties but over the years I have been drawn more and more into these past beautiful heartfelt love songs. Some may argue these dated songs should stay where they are as they are old fashioned. But for me I love past and present music although I feel in this current era some music just doesn’t have that meaningful impact and thought of older music, especially with the love songs. Three most gorgeous young women of their times and I adored them . ❤
Mary Weiss, the lead singer of another famous girl group, the Shangri-La's just passed. Try one of their songs in honor of her: Remember (Walking in the Sand) (the "oh no" song from the meme.) I Can Never Go Home Anymore Leader of the Pack Give Us Your Blessings They were the queens of melodramatic teen tragedy songs.
Ya'll had Ronnie in an Eddie Money video. "Take me Home Tonight". The Beatles changed everything. After they led the British Invasion, the girl groups lost popularity.
I remember the Dixie Cups. My daddy had the record and I used to play it all the time when I was like 6-7. My favorites were “Chapel of Love” and “Iko Iko”. Man, I need to see if he still has that record.
There's another song with the same title by the Turtles. What you are hearing is the "Wall of Sound" created by producer Phil Spector whenever you hear the Ronettes, or some of the Righteous Brothers stuff, and many others.
Love The Ronettes. Amazing voices. Glad this video had footage of them in action. Looking forward to the next one. Walking In The Rain and Baby I Love You would be good follow ups.
Quintessential 60's girl group! Big crush on Nedra Talley.❤ And speaking of quintessential 60's groups, none better than The Buckingham's out of Chicago. They had five of the best songs of the mid to late 60's. 😊
Phil Spector was obsessed with Ronnie. He is famous for the Wall of Sound production. He filled the background with lots of instrumentation, thus the wall of sound. River Deep, Mountain High with Tina Turner is notable for the WOS.
I LOVE the Ronettes!!! When Phil Spector was married to Ronnie (RIP), he'd make her drive with a blow up doll in the passenger seat so that people thought she wasn't alone. He was absolutely INSANE. When he found out that the Ronettes were being inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, he wrote a letter telling them why they shouldn't choose them!!! A real piece of work that man was. Her owed her support of around $1500 a month. The first month, he sent that via a Brink's Truck in nickles!!! I think a judge reprimanded him and told him not to do that again!! The best decision she ever made was to dump his @@@ (I'm being nice). What a fantastic group these ladies were!!! I think you guys did Eddie Money - Take Me Home Tonight/Be My Baby. That featured Ronnie Spector. Fantastic song as well.
She tried desperately to dump him but was imprisoned in his mansion in LA. She did finally escape but paid a huge price. Her career was gone & he retained her royalties & kept custody of their 2 adopted sons. Tormented & abused them, too.
The Ronettes are great and you should definitely dive deeper into their catalogue. You should also reserve some slots on future Female Fridays for "Foolish Games" by Jewel and "Hello" by Walk Off The Earth (featuring Myles and Isaac)!
❤Great reaction guys. Jay I think you would enjoy The Donnas. All girl rockers from the same time period of Destiny's Child. These girls rock and all play their own instrument.
I think they died out in the late 1960’s with the growth of acid rock and hard rock. The same true with the boy groups in Motown. Solo artists continued to thrive - Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Smokie, Diana Ross, Aretha.
I’m surprised that nobody has suggested the Chiffons yet. He’s So Fine, One Fine Day, I Have A Boyfriend are great songs. Put them on your next Friday list.
To answer your question, both the British Invasion and the rise of the singer/songwriter movement in the mid 1960s spelled the end of the girl group era. However, girl groups still carried on into the 1970s, with The Supremes still releasing music until 1977, and The Three Degrees and Honey Cone had hits in the 1970s.
A song I'd love to see your do on Female Friday; "Baby, I'm yours" by Barbara Lewis. Very beautiful song and she had an amazing voice. Another great female artist from the same era, Barbara Mason, who sang "Yes, I'm Ready".
Ronnie Spector (the lead singer of The Ronettes did a song with Eddie Money called "Take Me Home Tonight" which was a fun song bringing her back in the spotlight. A good one for you to react to.
J and Amber, thanks for the Dusty Springfield song that I haven't heard for so long. Incidentally, Dusty Springfield sang the "since you went away, I've been wandering 'round..." On the Pet Shop Boys "What have I done to deserve this ". which you guys did before. Someone probably told you that by now though, but just in case. Big fan, watch every night. You should watch Tom Jones - I'll Never Fail In Love Again ". So strong and soulful. You two will love it.
You should really revisit Eddie Money's "Take Me Home Tonight/Be My Baby" from the late 80's which feature Ronnie Spector (the lead singer of the "Ronettes"). Great song with Ronnie singing and appearing in the video. At the time, Ronnie was cleaning motel rooms when she got the call from Eddie Money. I think you reacted to his video but made no mention of Ronnie Spector at all because this was before you knew of the Ronettes.
This is another one of the fabulous girl groups from the early 60's. Phil Spector produced this group. He later married the lead singer Ronnie. They had lots of hits including "Be My Baby", "Baby, I Love You", "(The Best Part of) Breakin' Up", "Walking In The Rain" etc.
One Direction - "Story of My Life" & "Night Changes". I was born in 1961 & keep my playlists mainly to the great music I grew up on. Not really a fan of this group (couldn't name the members) but these 2 songs are on my playlist. Thanks for Ronnie & The Ronettes reaction. 💜
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "Baby, I Love You" and "Walking in the Rain"!!!

Little Ronnie Spector, we loved you through out your career. Rest in Peace finally.

One of the very best Connie Francis songs was Senza Fine which was the theme of the 1965 movie Flight of the Phoenix.
The 60's girl groups were so good!

Another hit of theirs was Waliking in the Rain. Loved this one too.
I can't say I cared much for "You Baby", a non-hit. However, yes!, "Walking In The Rain" ought to be given a listen.
