The song 'Shape Of My Heart', by renowned artist Sting, is a composition that delves into the depths of the human soul, using the metaphor of a card game to explore more complex themes such as the search for meaning and the true nature of being. The lyrics of the song suggest a reflection on the intentions and values that drive people's actions, going beyond appearances and material gains.
At the beginning of the song, the narrator describes a player who is not interested in the money or the respect he could gain from the game, but rather seeks answers and understanding through the cards, which represent elements of life and destiny. The 'sacred geometry of chance' and the 'hidden law of a probable outcome' are expressions that evoke the idea that there are deeper patterns and meanings to be discovered in everyday experiences.
The repetition of the lines 'I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier, I know that the clubs are weapons of war, I know that diamonds mean money for this art' reveals the narrator's knowledge of the traditional symbols associated with the cards, but he insists that 'that's not the shape of my heart', indicating that his essence and values do not align with these superficial representations. The song therefore invites the listener to look beyond what is tangible and consider what truly shapes a person's character and identity, suggesting that love and authenticity are the true guides to understanding the 'shape of someone's heart'.

But one day you guys will react to some of the songs from his Symphonicities album and you'll be blown away again by songs you've heard but that he rearranged with an orchestra - it's beautiful! Dominic Miller: The song's co-writer and guitarist
Larry Adler: Played harmonica on the song........"Shape of My Heart" was released in 1993 as the fifth single from Sting's fourth solo album, Ten Summoner's Tales. The song has been sampled by many artists, including Sugababes, Craig David, Nas, and Monica.

I was going to recommend another Sting song for you, but then I realized I couldn’t recommend just one. There are dozens with this level of beauty and creative expression, so just choose anything! We are all looking forward to it! 😉

Sting is a musical genius. One of the greatest lyricists & musicians of our times. The metaphors & the way he phrases things is incredible. Then of course theres his voice which is just heavenly. This tune was famously sampled by Juice WRLD for lucid dreams. Sting owns 85% of that smash hits royalties.

That instrument was a harmonica, not a violin. A wonderfully wistful tune. Two terrific upbeat (funky!) numbers from this same album ("Ten Summoner's Tales") to check out sometime are "Heavy Cloud, No Rain" and "Epilogue (Nothin' 'Bout Me)."

I have listened to Sting for decades. I have seen him perform with "The Police" and I have been to 3 of his solo, yet collaborative concerts. As I have said before, there are artists that come along in a lifetime and touch you in a profound way. Sting is one of these many artists for me. His music, activism and even feminism have touched me in a way that is poetic. This song was during a very unique and passionate time in my life history. His music touches you in your soul. Another story teller for the musical history books. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.

Feel pretty confident in saying the middle eight/instrumental bit main instrument were Uilleann Pipes, (like a more mournful version of bagpipes), which were cross faded in the editing when the song was mixed, into a harmonica part-so it would sound like one instrument when the song was played back. The main part throughout the song would likely have been a classical/nylon stringed guitar. And the bit at the end Amber asked about was again a harmonica.

This is my favourite song by any artist, and that's saying something, as there are so many songs by other artists I adore. It's hauntingly beautiful. As Amber says, it's also intimate. Maybe that's because Sting's voice is inherently sensual. The instrumentation is equally sensual and the lyrics are poetic. For me, a masterpiece ❤.

Dominic Miller, Sting's guitar player, has been in Sting's bands since The Soul Cages albums. While the rest of the band has turned over, Dominic is still up there: we saw a Sting show in 2022 with them.
The other players in the core band were Vinnie Colaiuta on drums and David Sancious on keyboards. That Ten Summoner's Tales album also featured chromatic harmonica solos. Besides this cut, check out "Something The Boy Said."

The great Larry Adler played the harmonica!♥ Sting explained that through "Shape of My Heart", he wanted to tell the story of a "card player, a gambler who gambles not to win but to try to figure out something; to figure out some kind of mystical logic in luck, or chance; some kind of scientific, almost religious law."

This song reminds me of Canada. I was driving in the Maritime Provinces in 1993, when this album came out. I had it on cassette. Listening in Nova Soscotia or NBW, or New'land -this song brings back memories. I saw Sting "live' in 1988, at my college in 1988, with his Jazz/Rock band -have been a fan of The Police for years. I am 55 years now. Even my Dad was a fan of Sting, as his name was also Gordon, I got my Dad into his music!

If you want to see what Sting is really capable of, you have to check out the 'Live In Oslo 1993' concert. It's with the same incredible band as in this video, and it's the best concert he ever recorded. It's incredible from start to finish, but the highlight is 'When The World Is Running Down', which has a jaw-dropping keyboard solo.
