From what I read about that he showed up with his head and eyebrows shaved and that was basically the inspiration of the scene in the Wall movie where Pink shaves his head and brows.

I remember hearing an interview with Roger Waters about writing. He said with lyrics he learned from Syd that the simple statements were the best. I think in a odd way, Syd was always a member of that band.

I’m 22 and my dad is 59 almost 60 and me and him absolutely love Pink Floyd and Tool we do the same shit just mellow out maybe smoke a little and crank the headphones and just let our minds wander to this! Absolutely right there bud :) makes me smile how much music draws us all together!
This is one of those albums that you think to yourself how lucky we are that these people worked together to create music that is so moving. It's definitely a musical treasure.
Agree and would add one more thing to build on your point: Wish You Were Here may be the greatest follow up album ever made by a rock band. Pink Floyd’s previous record, “Dark Side of the Moon” was possibly the most groundbreaking rock record ever. Following up DSOTM with another almost equally stunning album in “Wish You Were Here” is unheard of.

Joy is nothing if not simple. It only takes us to complicate it. Roger Waters once said that when they were a young band they were at Abbey Road studios when The Beatles were recording Sgt. Peppers and said they were in awe at what could be done in that enclosed space. He realized then what direction his band should inevitably embark upon with different sounds and ideas. It sounds simple enough with the right inspiration. Doesn't it?
I was lucky enough to meet THE FLOYD GUYS on multiple occasions but I didn't really get on with ROGER he always seemed to be pissed off.But I don't really blame him because at the time the band couldn't stand eachother well ROGER anyway he always wanted CONTROL and POWER over the BAND.But I really felt for DAVID the most because he never really spoke or stood up to ROGER the guy was too nice and it's not in his nature to do that.But the most regretful thing about meeting them was i wasn't really a FLOYD FAN so i didn't get no PICTURES or AUTOGRAPHS from them..
The best thing the Floyd do is The use of space. They aren't afraid to let thing develop, use silence it's just awesome how well they did this. I know of no other band that can even come close to this level of perfection!
To us, Syd was one of the founding members of the band. To them, he was a beloved, creative, charismatic friend and band mate. Roger Waters knew him since they were kiddos. Dave Gilmour was 2 years behind them in HS. Dave made sure that Syd always received royalties after he had his collapse--throughout his life. They sometimes re-issue Syd's early work to keep him as part of the pF band/brand. I often have thought as young as they were when Syd drifted away, how scarred they were by that. We do not handle MH issues NOW--so many decades later. This is a tribute to their friend. Check out the live version from the 'Pulse' concert, too.
@@robertmartin8565 Waters claims he and Syd were in primary school together--and neighbors. From the single digits. Gilmour speaks that he was 2 years behind them in HS. Dave had earlier band experience than they did in the Cambridge scene. They all talk about what a vision Syd was in school--how charismatic. My point was we can appreciate the music they all created. But they had authentic relationships from childhood that more deeply colors and marks them differently than fans or people not connected in private life. Their collective pain never being able to visit him, for example b/c his sister said it upset him when he tried to remember their connection. Even amongst ourselves, when something profound hits us at younger ages, we struggle to process it. Their events with their friend and bandmate was on the global stage as it imprinted the band and their creative output.

The day it was released, we were in line at the record store,we each bought copies and immediately put it on and listened to the entire album. Stunned Pink Floyd fans were we! It never gets old, the way they put songs and albums together, they always sound fresh, after 1,000s of plays. Amazing band!!!
I’ll never forget driving in the dark through the mountains- snow falling in the headlights, mountains rising sharply from the road and this song playing on the car stereo. Magical!!
This reminds me of coming in from a long summer day in the sun, at the lake, the river, the pool, slightly sunburned but showered and in clean cool clothes and just bathed in dreamy music, getting ready to go back out maybe. Oh what do I know. Somebody slap me!

To me this album is the band's greatest masterpiece. Even more so than Dark Side. Every member seems to be an equal contributor. And Dick Parry's saxophone is unbelievable.

I was born south of Chicago, in 1963. Yeah. I remember when my Big brother brought this LP home and put it on for all of us. My dad CRANKED IT UP. It still gives me chills, all these years later. I'm SOO very happy that you've been exposed to this beautiful song.

I cry every time. It’s like they were all saying bye too their friend with their instruments. All them in the booth recording as Syd was in the producers booth looking in jumping and laughing while brushing his teeth, they were all crying as they saw him, he didn’t look nothing like his former beautiful self. The only thing they recognized was his eyes that was all. All of them in shock, Just his eyes. Shine on in heaven Syd. They took care of your legacy here. Just shine on…. 😢😢😢😢

The humming at the end is the lead in to "Welcome to the Machine." The whole album is a trip. I keep harping about how Floyd is meant to be listened to by the album, no matter how masterful the individual tracks are, and this album, their 9th studio album, is a prime example. Birthday girl, you're right: no band has the ability to entrance one from the get-go quite like Floyd. I pray you will enjoy many happy, healthy returns of the day.
Listening to just one song for a first listen is like watching just one scene from an amazing film. Yeah you may enjoy the beauty of it by itself but you experience the true masterpiece when you listen to the album as a whole

I was 18 in September 1975 and bought this album on vinyl for my birthday - I still play it to this day even as now, somehow, I’m approaching 66😳 As a lifelong Floyd fan my reaction to this album was exactly the same as yours; and it still has the same effect today. Oh, and the way this track runs into the next…fabulous. You guys are awesome and thanks for this one. (In my head I’m still 18 and it makes me just a little sad to think how quickly the time has passed; Best not to dwell on that) And of course Amber….Happy Birthday!🎉

The day my dad died, when I started my truck to leave the hospital, this is the song that came on. Pink Floyd is an amazing band. I've seen them live 2 times. An experience I can't even describe.

I can't describe how my heart feels knowing that this band has touched generations. My God, what a blessing. I often think that if people nowadays listened to more of the music from the 60's and 70's, we'd all be much more loving.
You are spot on. Most bands try to cram as much as they can into a 3 minute catchy instantly forgettable radio friendly song. Pink Floyd know it's all about building up tension and anticipation and that's not possible in a 3=minute track

Most of DSOTM’s music was composed by Wright and/or Gilmour. A number of the most memorable songs on the Wall were composed by Gilmour with Waters or entirely by Gilmour. Of course Waters wrote all the lyrics and after he left the band, Gilmour had to get outside help on the lyrics.)
As much as I respect Waters and love Gilmour, I would add "One of..." to both of their labels from you. And that would be hard to refute. Also, one of the best bands ever. You could also add that both Waters and Gilmour were two of the best vocalists in rock. And I do appreciate the alternate take from @mirandak3273, as well.
Greatest songwriter ever might be a bit of a stretch even though he's certainly up there. Gilmour is obviously incredible, but I think it's difficult to say with any certainty that he's definitely above the likes of Hendrix and Beck etc.

Syd founded Pink Floyd in 1965 but was only on their first two albums Piper At the Gates of Dawn and Saucerful of Secrets. The band had to let him go because of his mental instability due to too many LSD trips. They were certainly more successful without Syd but there would be no Pink Floyd without him. They had released a couple of singles with Syd as well. "See Emily Play" would be a fun tune to see y'all react to if you're interested in going that far back into their catalogue. It's cool to see you're getting back to Pink Floyd and that you're open to listening to longer pieces of music. A lot of prog & psychedelic rock consist of long songs. Happy b-day, Amber! The sad thing is that Syd wasn't just deliberately experimenting with LSD, his housemates were lacing his tea with LSD on a regular basis, which lead to his psychosis. It's such a cruel and sad story of a genius.
Pink Floyd is art. It's in a league of it's own and It's been a huge part of my life since I first heard Pink Floyd the year that Animals was released. Even as a kid I realized at the time that this was life-changing music.... and it certainly is!
This song probably has the best four note sequence in music history. I once heard this song played at a funeral in a large abbey and the way those notes rang out was close to biblical.
I bought my first Pink Floyd album in 1969 (Ummagumma) and saw them live in 1971 and 4 more times after that. For me This is the BEST band of all times. Now I'm 71 years old and still listen to them everyday.

The song is a tribute to one the original band members Syd Barrett. Who sadly suffered from drug addition and mental illness. In my option the best rendition of this song is off the live Earls court in 1994. Love the whole concert from beginning to end !!
And the story is that, while they were in the studio working on *this* song/piece, Syd visited the studio. They hadn't seen him in years and didn't recognize him, but the man just.......showed up.
I am nearing 73 soon, and listen to this eternal music I grew up hearing the first time they were released on the AM radio then stereo FM stations. We would buy the 12" platers, light up and absorb every note and feeling of the best music generation ever! Loving the young of today tuning in and turning on to the magic of the era. I've always deferred to Dark Side of the Moon, but the older I get, Wish You Were Here has probably become my favorite Pink Floyd album. This song is a masterpiece.
I cried while listening to this. Music gets into my soul and gets me emotional, whether it's sadness, joy, anger, whatever. This song just takes me to another place.
I just saw Australian Pink Floyd tonight in Oregon. They are the the best and most professional tribute band I've ever seen. They played Dark Side in its entirety and ended with Comfortably Numb, and everything in between, including Shine On. Note for note perfect. Lights, graphics, and lasers were awesome! Don't miss them! Funny how I get home and see you doing a reaction to this song. It was the perfect encore to an amazing night.
I concur - seen them a couple of times at the Corn Exchange in Cambridge. I also recommend 'Brit Floyd' who are also uncannily good in their tribute to The Wall album.
From what I have read, Brit Floyd is slightly better than Australian Floyd. We have seen Brit Floyd twice in the last 12 months and honestly you think you are listening to Pink Floyd
Gilmour's guitar calling out to his dear friend is heart breaking. In the latest Syd Barrett documentary, Gilmour says he regrets not stopping by to see Syd even though the Barrett family thought it best if the band did not reach out to Syd.
I wish David Gilmour had come to see Roger 'Syd' Barrett at 6 St Margaret's Square off Cherry Hinton Road, Cambridge where he lived quietly with his art. We Cambridge people protected him. I wish Roger Waters who like David Gilmour was from Cambridge too had visited him too, in secret for both of them with Barrett's sister, Rosemary Breen, there.
IMHO, one of the best songs by any band, anywhere ever! So epic, euphoric and sadly haunting all at once. Truly, as you labeled it, a masterpiece for all ages!
The first part of my favorite piece of music ever from my favorite band ever. I put on headphones, lie back, close my eyes and travel "elsewhere" at least once a week. If I am stressed this relaxes me, if I am sad this makes me happy, if I am lonely I am surrounded by a world of beautiful sound. A blues masterpiece. I love how it starts with the sustained organ or synthesizer key and just builds so slowly without getting boring. It’s trance like. A massage for the mind.
Lots of inspiration from the blues greats, turning it into something new, but still anchoring itself on those old ways of playing that just work. Very well made through and through.
IMHO, this is the best song Pink Floyd ever did. The notes are so well chosen. They arrangement is so brilliant. The feel is ethereal. It just takes you somewhere only to bring you back. And that sax... Man... My hair is standing on the back of my neck and arms as I listen to it, now! And...the fact that Sid Barrett, who this song is about, appeared in the studio out of nowhere as they recorded this album, never said a word, and left is just haunting.
After the release of the epic Dark Side of the Moon, my friends and I wondered, what could they release to follow it, then they released this . Wish you were here was/is as much an epic album as Dark side of the Moon. Enjoyable from the first sound of Shine on you crazy diamond part 1 to the last sound of Shine on you crazy diamond Part 9 and every note in between.
There is no drop, at least not like you were expecting, in this etheral piece of brain food... The blues, crossed with psychdelic rock is POWERFUL in this song. I had never really heard the blues in this song like I did tonight. Even the drums sounded Blues infused...
I’ve said it many times before. David Gilmour is one of, if not the best tasteful guitarists ever. Many Britons looked up to old American blues guitarists.

Having lost my dad this last year has changed how I feel about this song. I used to think it was about the lost potential of their band leader, now I realize it is more about not having someone you love gone forever and coming to grips with that. Probably more difficult in their case as Syd was alive but just not there anymore.

This song makes me happy for a silly reason,When myself and my sister where young in the 1970s,my dad used to listen to this driving to the coast on holiday, Whenever this came on , at the synth bit at the start , my sister and I would sing, "Pigs In Space" from the Muppets , and would have a laugh together ,such a vivid memory almost 50 years later.
First of all, happy 30th birthday, Amber! The two times that I was fortunate enough to see Pink Floyd, they started the show with this song. What an incredible way to start off a concert. Their stage production, lighting, lasers, inflatable pigs, crashing airplanes, etc. we’re always top notch. But it was their amazing quadraphonic sound that stole the show every time. No one had concert sound quite like Pink Floyd. 🐖

Syd Barrett was still alive when the released this song. He lived until 2006 while struggling with mental health issues. There's a sad story about a time towards the end of them making this album that, after not seeing him for 7 years, Syd actually walked into the studio during a mixing session for this track. They all said he seemed diminished and faded. They said he had no clue the songs were about him and also that at some point he just left quietly without saying anything to anyone or anyone noticing him leave.
The other part of the story I've heard the band members mention is that they actually saw Syd in the studio during the session but didn't know it was him at first. He'd put on weight, had shaved his head and eyebrows, and seemed distant and foggy. The band was confused by his presence and assumed he must be one of the crew members or something. When Gilmour finally recognized that it was Syd, Waters broke down and cried. That same day was also Gilmour's wedding day and Syd wandered into the reception at EMI and then, at some point, left without saying anything to anyone.

David Gilmour used 100 watt Hiwatt heads into Hiwatt 4x12 cabs at Abbey Road for this. Full volume recording. Tubes, speakers pushed to the max. Therefore the rich tone.
Incredible band, making sounds that only they can. The artistry by these men is something surreal. It is hypnotic and takes you into a whole new world.

I’m 22 and my dad is 59 almost 60 and me and him absolutely love Pink Floyd and Tool we do the same shit just mellow out maybe smoke a little and crank the headphones and just let our minds wander to this! Absolutely right there bud :) makes me smile how much music draws us all together!
This is one of those albums that you think to yourself how lucky we are that these people worked together to create music that is so moving. It's definitely a musical treasure.

Wish You Were Here may be the greatest follow up album ever made by a rock band. Pink Floyd’s previous record, “Dark Side of the Moon” was possibly the most groundbreaking rock record ever.
Following up DSOTM with another almost equally stunning album in “Wish You Were Here” is unheard of.

Joy is nothing if not simple. It only takes us to complicate it. Roger Waters once said that when they were a young band they were at Abbey Road studios when The Beatles were recording Sgt. Peppers and said they were in awe at what could be done in that enclosed space. He realized then what direction his band should inevitably embark upon with different sounds and ideas. It sounds simple enough with the right inspiration. Doesn't it?
Pink Floyd is a genre unto itself. How fortunate we are to share the planet with these gifted artists.
I even liked them before I discovered THC, I just loved them more after...
Bands like them, The (Trippy Side of) Beatles, Tool, System of a Down all are really their own genre
I was lucky enough to meet THE FLOYD GUYS on multiple occasions but I didn't really get on with ROGER he always seemed to be pissed off.But I don't really blame him because at the time the band couldn't stand eachother well ROGER anyway he always wanted CONTROL and POWER over the BAND.But I really felt for DAVID the most because he never really spoke or stood up to ROGER the guy was too nice and it's not in his nature to do that.But the most regretful thing about meeting them was i wasn't really a FLOYD FAN so i didn't get no PICTURES or AUTOGRAPHS from them..
The best thing the Floyd do is The use of space. They aren't afraid to let thing develop, use silence it's just awesome how well they did this. I know of no other band that can even come close to this level of perfection!

To us, Syd was one of the founding members of the band. To them, he was a beloved, creative, charismatic friend and band mate. Roger Waters knew him since they were kiddos. Dave Gilmour was 2 years behind them in HS. Dave made sure that Syd always received royalties after he had his collapse--throughout his life. They sometimes re-issue Syd's early work to keep him as part of the pF band/brand. I often have thought as young as they were when Syd drifted away, how scarred they were by that. We do not handle MH issues NOW--so many decades later. This is a tribute to their friend. Check out the live version from the 'Pulse' concert, too.

@@robertmartin8565 Waters claims he and Syd were in primary school together--and neighbors. From the single digits. Gilmour speaks that he was 2 years behind them in HS. Dave had earlier band experience than they did in the Cambridge scene. They all talk about what a vision Syd was in school--how charismatic. My point was we can appreciate the music they all created. But they had authentic relationships from childhood that more deeply colors and marks them differently than fans or people not connected in private life. Their collective pain never being able to visit him, for example b/c his sister said it upset him when he tried to remember their connection. Even amongst ourselves, when something profound hits us at younger ages, we struggle to process it. Their events with their friend and bandmate was on the global stage as it imprinted the band and their creative output.
Not taking away from the problem of dealing with mental health - but doing all those drugs didn't help.

The day it was released, we were in line at the record store,we each bought copies and immediately put it on and listened to the entire album. Stunned Pink Floyd fans were we! It never gets old, the way they put songs and albums together, they always sound fresh, after 1,000s of plays. Amazing band!!!

Laying in the middle of my room. Pink Floyd on the turntable while I was tripping on psychedelics. Some of my favorite coming of age memories.
To me this album is the band's greatest masterpiece. Even more so than Dark Side. Every member seems to be an equal contributor. And Dick Parry's saxophone is unbelievable.
Animals is right up there as well. Can actually say there is a bad Pink Floyd album? The answer is no

I was born south of Chicago, in 1963. Yeah. I remember when my Big brother brought this LP home and put it on for all of us. My dad CRANKED IT UP. It still gives me chills, all these years later. I'm SOO very happy that you've been exposed to this beautiful song.

All them in the booth recording as Syd was in the producers booth looking in jumping and laughing while brushing his teeth, they were all crying as they saw him, he didn’t look nothing like his former beautiful self. The humming at the end is the lead in to "Welcome to the Machine." The whole album is a trip. I keep harping about how Floyd is meant to be listened to by the album, no matter how masterful the individual tracks are, and this album, their 9th studio album, is a prime example. Birthday girl, you're right: no band has the ability to entrance one from the get-go quite like Floyd. I pray you will enjoy many happy, healthy returns of the day.

I was 18 in September 1975 and bought this album on vinyl for my birthday - I still play it to this day even as now, somehow, I’m approaching 66😳
As a lifelong Floyd fan my reaction to this album was exactly the same as yours; and it still has the same effect today. Oh, and the way this track runs into the next…fabulous.

Y’all need to do parts 6-9 now (this was 1-5). Such a beautiful tribute to one of Pink Floyd’s founding members (original lead singer) Syd Barrett. Unfortunately Syd was outed from the band due to his deteriorating mental health, which worsened by his heavy use of psychedelic drugs.

You are spot on. Most bands try to cram as much as they can into a 3 minute catchy instantly forgettable radio friendly song. Pink Floyd know it's all about building up tension and anticipation and that's not possible in a 3=minute track

(Fixed it for you. Most of DSOTM’s music was composed by Wright and/or Gilmour. A number of the most memorable songs on the Wall were composed by Gilmour with Waters or entirely by Gilmour. Of course Waters wrote all the lyrics and after he left the band, Gilmour had to get outside help on the lyrics.)
As much as I respect Waters and love Gilmour, I would add "One of..." to both of their labels from you. And that would be hard to refute. Also, one of the best bands ever. You could also add that both Waters and Gilmour were two of the best vocalists in rock. And I do appreciate the alternate take from @mirandak3273, as well.
Greatest songwriter ever might be a bit of a stretch even though he's certainly up there. Gilmour is obviously incredible, but I think it's difficult to say with any certainty that he's definitely above the likes of Hendrix and Beck etc.

Syd founded Pink Floyd in 1965 but was only on their first two albums Piper At the Gates of Dawn and Saucerful of Secrets. The band had to let him go because of his mental instability due to too many LSD trips. They were certainly more successful without Syd but there would be no Pink Floyd without him. They had released a couple of singles with Syd as well. "See Emily Play" would be a fun tune to see y'all react to if you're interested in going that far back into their catalogue. It's cool to see you're getting back to Pink Floyd and that you're open to listening to longer pieces of music. A lot of prog & psychedelic rock consist of long songs. Happy b-day, Amber! The sad thing is that Syd wasn't just deliberately experimenting with LSD, his housemates were lacing his tea with LSD on a regular basis, which lead to his psychosis. It's such a cruel and sad story of a genius.

Pink Floyd is art. It's in a league of it's own and It's been a huge part of my life since I first heard Pink Floyd the year that Animals was released. Even as a kid I realized at the time that this was life-changing music.... and it certainly is!
This song probably has the best four note sequence in music history. I once heard this song played at a funeral in a large abbey and the way those notes rang out was close to biblical.
I bought my first Pink Floyd album in 1969 (Ummagumma) and saw them live in 1971 and 4 more times after that. For me This is the BEST band of all times. Now I'm 71 years old and still listen to them everyday.

The song is a tribute to one the original band members Syd Barrett. Who sadly suffered from drug addition and mental illness. In my option the best rendition of this song is off the live Earls court in 1994. Love the whole concert from beginning to end !!

I just saw Australian Pink Floyd tonight in Oregon. They are the the best and most professional tribute band I've ever seen. They played Dark Side in its entirety and ended with Comfortably Numb, and everything in between, including Shine On. Note for note perfect. Lights, graphics, and lasers were awesome! Don't miss them!

Gilmour's guitar calling out to his dear friend is heart breaking. In the latest Syd Barrett documentary, Gilmour says he regrets not stopping by to see Syd even though the Barrett family thought it best if the band did not reach out to Syd.
I wish David Gilmour had come to see Roger 'Syd' Barrett at 6 St Margaret's Square off Cherry Hinton Road, Cambridge where he lived quietly with his art. We Cambridge people protected him. I wish Roger Waters who like David Gilmour was from Cambridge too had visited him too, in secret for both of them with Barrett's sister, Rosemary Breen, there.
IMHO, one of the best songs by any band, anywhere ever! So epic, euphoric and sadly haunting all at once. Truly, as you labeled it, a masterpiece for all ages!

The first part of my favorite piece of music ever from my favorite band ever. I put on headphones, lie back, close my eyes and travel "elsewhere" at least once a week. If I am stressed this relaxes me, if I am sad this makes me happy, if I am lonely I am surrounded by a world of beautiful sound. For 48 years this masterpiece has been part of the musical therapy that is my solution to life's daily grind. Thanks for doing the therapy with me tonight and Happy Birthday, Amber!!!! ❤🔷
Pink Floyd albums are all journeys in music, sound, and lyrics. They all tell a story and each song blends into the next. Wish You Were Here is a masterpiece of an album.

A blues masterpiece. I love how it starts with the sustained organ or synthesizer key and just builds so slowly without getting boring. It’s trance like. A massage for the mind.
Lots of inspiration from the blues greats, turning it into something new, but still anchoring itself on those old ways of playing that just work. Very well made through and through.
IMHO, this is the best song Pink Floyd ever did. The notes are so well chosen. They arrangement is so brilliant. The feel is ethereal. It just takes you somewhere only to bring you back. And that sax... Man... My hair is standing on the back of my neck and arms as I listen to it, now! And...the fact that Sid Barrett, who this song is about, appeared in the studio out of nowhere as they recorded this album, never said a word, and left is just haunting.
After the release of the epic Dark Side of the Moon, my friends and I wondered, what could they release to follow it, then they released this . Wish you were here was/is as much an epic album as Dark side of the Moon. Enjoyable from the first sound of Shine on you crazy diamond part 1 to the last sound of Shine on you crazy diamond Part 9 and every note in between.
There is no drop, at least not like you were expecting, in this etheral piece of brain food... The blues, crossed with psychdelic rock is POWERFUL in this song. I had never really heard the blues in this song like I did tonight. Even the drums sounded Blues infused...
It's at the end of Nick Mason's consecutive toms hitting into the full beat
5:15 it IS a drop to me and one of the best of all time

I’ve said it many times before. David Gilmour is one of, if not the best tasteful guitarists ever. Many Britons looked up to old American blues guitarists.

@Wolverines77 thank you for helping me hear the blues in this! Even Roger's doing a slow, modified walking bass line in parts. Pink Floyd's blues song for Syd is now how I'll hear this masterpiece.
Ain't never been a band like them. Won't be another. I'm so glad to see yet another generation of music lovers who sees the Pink Floyd for who they were.
Having lost my dad this last year has changed how I feel about this song. I used to think it was about the lost potential of their band leader, now I realize it is more about not having someone you love gone forever and coming to grips with that. Probably more difficult in their case as Syd was alive but just not there anymore.

This song makes me happy for a silly reason,When myself and my sister where young in the 1970s,my dad used to listen to this driving to the coast on holiday, Whenever this came on , at the synth bit at the start , my sister and I would sing, "Pigs In Space" from the Muppets , and would have a laugh together ,such a vivid memory almost 50 years later.
First of all, happy 30th birthday, Amber! The two times that I was fortunate enough to see Pink Floyd, they started the show with this song. What an incredible way to start off a concert. Their stage production, lighting, lasers, inflatable pigs, crashing airplanes, etc. we’re always top notch. But it was their amazing quadraphonic sound that stole the show every time. No one had concert sound quite like Pink Floyd. 🐖

A musical masterpiece, even more so than Dark Side Of The Moon in my opinion, another piece of historical musical brilliance.
It honestly made me emotional to see how deeply you both got into this song. Thank you both for your insight and openness to so much wonderful music.
Gimour's subtle guitar work in the beginning is brilliant, and sets the mood.
Syd Barrett was still alive when the released this song. He lived until 2006 while struggling with mental health issues. There's a sad story about a time towards the end of them making this album that, after not seeing him for 7 years, Syd actually walked into the studio during a mixing session for this track. They all said he seemed diminished and faded. They said he had no clue the songs were about him and also that at some point he just left quietly without saying anything to anyone or anyone noticing him leave.
The other part of the story I've heard the band members mention is that they actually saw Syd in the studio during the session but didn't know it was him at first. He'd put on weight, had shaved his head and eyebrows, and seemed distant and foggy. The band was confused by his presence and assumed he must be one of the crew members or something. When Gilmour finally recognized that it was Syd, Waters broke down and cried. That same day was also Gilmour's wedding day and Syd wandered into the reception at EMI and then, at some point, left without saying anything to anyone.

It's like three songs in one. It takes you on a spiritual journey like no other music has or ever will. My favorite band ever. You guys did a great tribute here.

David Gilmour used 100 watt Hiwatt heads into Hiwatt 4x12 cabs at Abbey Road for this. Full volume recording. Tubes, speakers pushed to the max. Therefore the rich tone.
Incredible band, making sounds that only they can. The artistry by these men is something surreal. It is hypnotic and takes you into a whole new world.

One of the greatest songs from one of the greatest bands of all time. Pink Floyd is in my top five bands ever, along with The Beatles, Yes, Rush, and Led Zeppelin.
This song is right up there near "Close To The Edge," by Yes, as far as being one of the greatest Prog songs ever. Just magical! And, a great tribute to Syd. ❤✌
