I am a 75 year old woman and I recently discovered Pink Floyd. Back in the day I listened to soft rock, R & B, jazz music. I feel like I missed out decades of Pink Floyd. I am obsessed with Pink Floyd, thank goodness for concert videos and documentaries. I have joined the David Gilmour fan club. You are right, they are trippy.

Welcome to the Pink Floyd fan club. I've been into them from the beginning. I'm 76. Saw David Gilmore at the Greek Theater in the 80s and Pink Floyd at the Oakland Coliseum in the 90s. They put on some of the best concerts I've seen (started attending concerts at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco in 1965).
I have always had a few different favourites, even back in my school days, when there was peer pressure attached to your choices as a male. I don't remember 1 Donny Osmond fan 🤔 I liked and collected Elton John, like he was going out of fashion, but my answer to the question was nearly always Bowie. However, my own personal, only a few of my mates know, favourite, was Cockney Rebel. My older brother was well into Beatles, Kinks, Zeppelin, Floyd, and Motown and Reggae before that, so I listened to them, too.
I have a few favourite bands from my teens, but in terms of my vinyl collection, Floyd and Dark Side, in particular, are easily in my top 5 most played over the past 50 years since it's release. In fact, it probably vies for the top spot with Abbey Road.

Amber is ABSOLUTELY correct in wanting/NEEDING to listen to this whole album, The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), from beginning to end. Trust me, it's an EXPERIENCE -- and you won't regret it. This album is often considered one of THE BEST albums of ALL TIME and, in this case, the accolades are deserving!
If I remember right, this album spent more time in the top 100 album charts than any other album in history.
@@seekingwisdom5156 735 weeks (about 14 years) on the Billboard charts. Then the album was reissued and it went back on the charts for another 750 weeks. About 1500 weeks on the Billboard charts total. No other recording even comes close. 25 million copies sold worldwide.

The guitarist is named David Gilmour, and no one else sounds like him.
Listen to how few notes he plays. He gets more mileage out of a single, sustained note than nearly any other musician. Absolutely incomparable.

There's a small documentary around, I think it's about how they constructed 'Us And Them' but I could be wrong, where David Gilmour sits at a mixing desk and talks about "the art of leaving out stuff". He demonstrates it by muting some mixing channels. Even for somebody that has been listening to these songs for over four decades it's kinda mind blowing to see that music disected to its core.

57 here as well. Indeed, that is why I love these "reaction" videos. It is so great to see a whole new generation discovering and appreciating good music. What makes it even better is knowing what is coming; it is kind of like a parent watching a child discover the world.

You should try "Us And Them," "The Great Gig In The Sky," and "Money" from this same album. BETTER YET, this album should be listened to from beginning to end in one setting!! Dark Side of The Moon is one of the greatest albums of all time for a reason!

I would crank this up with just a oil lamp for light in a real wood paneled room with wood floors and watch them breathe. The full album is the way to go with all the snap crackles and pops as it spins.

I'm 65 and wondering how you reached old age at only 63. But yeah, Amber picked up on the 'trying to catch up' theme. They should always have lyrics to look at when they do a reaction. A lot of times, the lyrics are really unexpected when listening to the tune. Sometimes, like in this one, they're just so damn DEEP. As a side note: If someone would have tried to pause Dark Side of the Moon when we were first listening to it in the early 70s, they'd have got their ass kicked. Just sayin', J.
I first listened to this song (and the entire album) when I was around 20 and wondered how I'd never heard it before. Now, at 44, I appreciate it more than ever. "Time," specifically, is incredible to me in how succinctly it describes the phenomenon of time seeming to accelerate as we age. Brilliant.
I was nearly 16 when this came out, (1973). We had a subject at high school where we watched classic movies and the had to do an assignment on the concept of the movie. We had just watched Easy Rider, and our teacher said that we had some time left before the class was over so as a fill in he put this album on. I've been hooked ever since that day. A pivotal moment in my life.
Having Easy Rider and Pink Floyd in one day wasn't bad either. :)

Comfortably Numb is what most people will tell you is their top tier song but for me "Time" is even more of a masterpiece!!!! the lyrics, the guitar, Rick on keyboards and singing along with David....so AMAZING

It is necessary to realize that without Syd Barrett, this band would probably not have been formed at all! Other members are still aware of this and remember it many times in their work ("Wish You Were Here" or "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" ...).
@@lubos1207 Yes without Syd they would have been another has been of the 60s musical revolution as Roger said many times Pink Floyd could not have even started without Syd and after his musical demise could have not continued with him!! I mean Syd gave them the bands name and wrote all the songs an their first Album ('67) Piper at the gates of Dawn, so sad that Syd suffered bouts of Depression/ other mental illness and died a recluse at the age of 60 in relative poverty.

More importantly, she had not a clue what they wanted. After she tried some normal 'doo whaa' background they stopped her and said NO, but gave her no clue what would get a YES. So she just decided to use her voice as an additional instrument, and magic happened.
You might want to re-listen to Time before starting your reaction, since the two songs blend together.
Do both the original version from Darkside and the live version from Pulse.
I'm 56, but as a child, I'd turn the lights out at 8yrs old and listen to Pink Floyd in the complete darkness.

The older you get the more you will appreciate these lyrics. I grew up with this in high school(30 years ago), and now fully understand the words.
Pink Floyd dabbled in quadraphonic sound so listening in the proper environment makes a difference. Also black lights, trippy posters, beanbag chairs also make a difference. I was ten in that environment caught a contact and had my perception changed forever
depends on the recording youre listening too, theres a stero and quad version.
Some good open back headphones is my preference to really get that wide sound stage.
Don't forget the LSD and a copy of Wizard of Oz....

Many bands recorded in quadraphonic's. Pink Floyd dabble in sounds, weird sounds making recordings of all kinds of strange noises and sounds. They had an album of it but it was never released from what I remember. Waters even talks about it, making the sounds for "Money" he did at home with an adding machine and a bowl and a few coins.

The Dark Side Of The Moon is, to me, the best Pink Floyd album. It covers so much of what affects us in life. Time ticks off the seconds with a drum beat and also you hear the metronome which gives music precision. A disc jockey on the radio said all the clocks were recorded in a clock shop in London, England, pretty neat history of this song! The entire album is fantastic and a must listen to with headphones 🎧 on! Pink Floyd is a band that is totally unique and very different. Beautiful album to hear in entirety, the pauses between songs is there but very small. You can hear the breaks between each songs with the aid of headphones more so, listen to the whole album if you get the time. You won't be disappointed!!!

The "Home, home again..." lyrics to the end here are actually from the reprise of the song "Breathe." I agree with the earlier comments that you need to listen to the whole album from the beginning to the end to get the full appreciation of "Dark Side of the Moon."
It's even more powerful when you learn that the band were 30 and under when they created this masterpiece!
As with most songs, Pink Floyd is asking you to explore and uncover the nature of your existence.
This is something many should realise they should do before they turn 13, let alone 30. We don’t know what we are, how we exist, or how any of it exists, but we go about acting in the world. This is reckless.
We think we have all the time in the world (intellectually we know we don’t, but experientially we are clueless) to the point that we can feel more than 0 moments of stress and fear, to the point we can waste time being angry, to the point we see any meaning to getting a job/earning money beyond survival (which can easily be done without a penny).
All our lives, we go outwards in exploration. It’s never occurred to most to go within - the only place every single experience exists. It is impossible for anybody to experience anything anywhere but from within.

Imagine me, way in my 70s 73 to be correct. Had the album in 73 ,, isn’t it weird? ,, but don’t be sad youngsters, as long you are young in your heart, and brain, listen to some younger artists, it’s get you trough hard times. But can’t beat TIME!!!
I saw them just before the Meddle album was released, which they did a few songs from, and twice during the Dark Side Of The Moon tour and I can still see them in my mind's eye, truly amazing performers and lyricists.
Amber has the richt mindset to listen to this music. When you listen to a PinkFloyd song, at the end you always have to check what year you're in. And btw you never stop a Pink Floyd halfway.

Floyd has music that you absolutely feel, rather than just listen to. They allow the music to breathe and don’t feel rushed to come immediately with lyrics but when the lyrics come in they are super powerful! The entire Animals album is one of my favorites! But.... I can’t think of a song on any album that I don’t like some aspect of. Shine on you crazy diamond is an amazing masterpiece dedicated to a former band member with mental illness. It touches the soul! Every Floyd fan needs to hear the entire album The Wall and there’s also a movie. There’s soooo much Pink Floyd to do though! They do tend to write albums as an entire concept piece so you may get a better understanding of the whole album if you listen in order.

The only way to listen to Pink Floyd is as whole albums. Dark Side of The Moon is considered by many the greatest album ever made. It includes Time but the rest of the songs are equally amazing. You to should definitely do that album
Absolutely. Dark Side of the Moon was produced to be listened to as a whole, not just an album of singles. By listening to them one at a time you lose the transitions between songs and how they build on and relate to one another. There's nothing in this album that's accidental. It's not just an album, it's an experience.

@Rune Kristensen The question is not whether any Floyd song can stand alone they all could the question is which is the better way to listen to them and since Floyd albums are concept albums they are greatly improved by listening to the whole unit.No one would say that the first movement of Beethoven's fifth isn't worth listening to alone but there is no doubt that listening to the whole symphony improves the listen

Dark Side of the Moon is really one cohesive piece of music. Like an opera or a symphony. You gotta listen to the whole LP front to back in one sitting. It seems to be rite of passage for American suburban white kids from the 80's to smoke weed and listen to DSOTM in the dark with headphones. The reason you recognized the clocks at the beginning as being the end of the song before it.

@@theodoreritola9758 did I say anything about when it came out? KIDS from the 80's were TODDLERS in 1973 if they were even born yet. Not old enough to engage in a weed-induced rite of passage. I was talking about kids in the 80's listening to it stoned. Which was a thing. In the 80's. When the record came out is utterly irrelevant to my point. Maybe learn to read before CAPS LOCK correcting things no one said. . And no it was not as "popular as Thriller." In February of 1984 (almost immediately after it's release) Thriller became the best selling record in history and stayed that way.
Pink floyd aren't even american so I dont see how it's just an Americans rite of passage but I mostly agree... every human should listen to DSOTM, The wall and Animals from beginning to end. It's not just music, it's a life lesson.
The lyrics guys...the LYRICS! Something you always want to make sure you hear in a Pink Floyd song. Google the lyrics to this...then revisit them every few years. This is deep, prophetic, an autobiography of the human condition. The apparent increase in the speed of time as years pass is a common experience we all share...and this song speaks of it brilliantly!

I bought Dark Side when it came out but somehow Amber’s love of it has reawakened my appreciation of how brilliant it actually is. And for that I thank both of them. Shine on you crazy diamond.
This album is most of the reason I learned to play the guitar. It also syncs nicely to "The Wizard of Oz".
To understand "Time," go deep into the lyrics. This song, and the entire album, are amazing, but it's really not a "good vibe, feel-good" kind of album, if you listen to the lyrics. "Time" is about the urgency of being young, and wanting to be older, and then, *actually being* older, and facing the passing of time, and regret, and the hopes that didn't come to be. "Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way..."
Almost kind of glad they blocked out the lyrics and just enjoyed the song. Not all of us just Fuck away the years of our life and bask in regret.
@@ckobo84 Well, I didn't say that I had *lived* the lyrics. I was just explaining the meaning of the lyrics. Roger Waters wrote them, so if you think that he has "fucked away the years of his life" and is "basking in regret," you can take that up with him.
@Rune Kristensen The lyrics are an integral part of the song. Lyrics matter to the meaning of the overall composition, including the music. Dark lyrics can provide a whole other dimension to a *seemingly happy-sounding* song. If lyrics weren't important in songs, more bands would simply do instrumental music.
@Rune Kristensen Literature was my primary field of study at university, so it makes sense that lyrics are important to me, but I do get that they aren't nearly as important to many people. I'm not saying that we should all value the same things in songs. For some people, lyrics are very important, and for some, not as much. If people don't pay attention to lyrics though, then objectively speaking, they are missing a part of what the *actual writer(s)* of the song intended to communicate with it.
On the writing of "Time," the lyrics have much, much more to say than just "oh my gosh, time flew by so quickly." That *is* a bad cliche, and anyone could say it. The lyrics of this song are more insightful and poignant than that bad cliche though.
I'm not here to argue about whether this song's lyrics are good or not though. I just posted a comment here to say that the overall meaning of this song is not one of "good vibes," *even if* much of the music has a pleasant ambience. If a song has a pleasant-sounding, soothing melody, but the lyrics are speaking of war, terror, and desperation, then to say that the song is a "good vibes" song is to either miss or ignore part of what the song's composer(s) intended to convey with it.
Yes, it isn't really a totally bleak outlook , but it emphasizes the missed opportunity element of our lives

The whole album... would be a great reaction. Floyd, when they did concept albums they were masters at using the music to grab you, and put you where they want you , feeling what they want you to feel, when they want you to feel it . It's mesmerizing, life changing, and always will be. Once you get it, you can't shake it away.
This is the number one album of all time (time ha) for a reason. I wish nothing more than for Amber to be able to listen to Dark Side of the Moon in its' entirety, as it is meant to be. The look on her face - beautiful.

A lot of bands liked telling a story through the entire album. The Wall is another exceptional example.
Amber, girl you are not alone, PINK FLOYD is my favorite band of all time. Since I was born in the 60s, I got to live through the best music ever played. PF is on a plane on their own, nothing like them. I was honored to stand in the Louisiana SuperDome and see them live. No other concert will ever touch that experience. Roger Waters still tours the US every few years, and when he does it’s a DO NOT MISS experience. Lastly, I have never subscribed or turned on a post notification for anyone except you guys. You Rock!!!
All the tracks on this album flow seamlessly into the next, that's why they seem to end like they were cut, when you listen to them in isolation. This track especially, needs to be heard with it's immediate follow up "The Great Gig In The Sky" This track is about Time /life going quickly, the Great Gig is about the stages of facing dying; either personally or a loved one.
When he sings “The time has come. The song is over. Thought I’d something more to say”, he’s talking about dying. The next song on the album “Great Gig in the Sky” deals with the stages of anticipating the end, from denial to acceptance. Beautiful song if you haven’t listen too it yet! “Time” is a masterpiece within a masterpiece!

Amber, when I was 19 (I am now 55) I first listened to Pink Floyd and I was suddenly trapped within the amazing power of the music and the words. As I grew older I never lost my love for this band and each time I listen to them I am transported. It is a ‘trip’ and it never gets old. As I see you both discover them and enjoy them I am so happy that they still speak to people. This band is unique and will be remembered in history. Thank you for sharing your reaction. So glad you decided to do this one. This is a song you have to come back to throughout your life. As you get older, it will change, become deeper and more meaningful. I'm at an age where it's hard to listen to it without weeping now. Time gets away from you and there is no getting it back. "The time is gone, the song is over - thought I'd something more to say." I want that on my tombstone.
This song hits me the same way. I sing-along at full volume and I feel myself choke up on the words at points. Just grabbed you by the heart and especially now that I’m almost 50.

My very first album I bought in 1973 and here I am today, still experiencing it - it evokes different feelings everytime I listen.
Adding my voice to the chorus. Listen to the whole album. Hell, do an hour long reaction video to it, and I'd watch it. Why not? I've gone to shows where the purpose was for a cover band to do the whole album start to finish. I went to a Roger Waters' DSotM tour show, where he did that too. It's a must-have experience, and if somebody dared react to the entire album in one video, I'd be floored.
That first guitar riff, when the best changes from the clocks to the actual song, kicking around on a old piece of your hometown...hits home hard
"Money" should be next, a little more upbeat song but still with a message.

I was 11 years old riding on the back of my Dad's Honda motorcycle when I first heard this song. it was cranking from the bass heavy juke box at the pinball place and it could be heard all around the lake were camping at. 1973. yep. I thought about it telling me about how TIME keeps on slipping into the future before Steve Miller reminded me about TIME again. Fun
You need to listen to the entire Dark Side of the Moon album in one sitting, no breaks. Each song leads into the next with no breaks, and it is a true aural experience. Time leads into The Great Gig in the Sky, which is one of the most amazing pieces of music you will ever hear IMO.
Pink Floyd one of a kind band. Back in the 70s we used to call it "space" music. Probably because everyone was spaced out in the 70s and that music just melted you. I met David Gilmour in 1984 back stage at a concert in Hollywood Calif. He gave me a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know, and I know all the great ones.

I heard this song driving with my father for the first time around the age of 13. I immediately fell in love with it. But when my father explained the lyrics to me I did not really understand. Now that I'm in my 30's this song really resonates with me. "Time" certainly does fly by. Make the most of the life God has given you.

I heard this live, I think before you were born, 35 years ago, I was 15 when this came out and like a lot of us never paid much attention to them but this......THIS was so mind bending, from 1973-1979 4....FOUR albums that cannot be described, that body of work in such a short period, the only thing close was the Beatles and even they can't really touch this.
Out of all the album of music ever created, Dark Side of the Moon is the Album that you must listen to from start to finish to feel it. It is a Pink Floyd album. It has the record for most consecutive weeks on Billboard’s top 100 albums for over 700 weeks straight, around 14 years. It is a masterpiece. There is a funny saying that surrounds it though. “It is the greatest album of all time, but it isn’t even the best Pink Floyd album.”

Back in the day there were albums released that were more than just a bunch of song tracks, they were "concept" albums where the musicians allowed themselves to play and explore and create something new or different, and then put it out there for the rest of us to follow their journey. I know a lot of folks would do drugs while listening, but that just wasn't my thing. I would just go into our basement (rec room) put on the earphones, dim the lights, and drop the the needle, expecting to do nothing but immerse myself in the sounds for the next hour or so. --- Good stuff Maynard!!
The first time I heard DSOTM I was very much under the influence, and not alcohol, and I was totally blown away.
That’s was late 70s early 80s maybe. On the way back from my friends house the following morning I bought the album and have listened to it ever since. And you’re absolutely correct, that was a long time ago, and you certainly don’t need drugs to get/understand/enjoy it. But I do like to set a scene similar to yours, lay down, get comfy, lights out, headphones on and no distractions. It still blows me away to this day.

Our science museum had a theater that was domed and it was like sitting under the stars on Friday and Saturday night you could go and watch laser lights to whole Dark side of the moon album! My first time doing laser light I was 9 and 20years later I took my 9 year old sone!

I’m 48 and have listened to Floyd since I was a kid. I still listen regularly and Time is in my top 3 all time songs (all my top songs are Floyd) and it still hits the same. There aren’t many bands that have their own sound and stay relevant for 50 years and judging by what’s churned out now I will be listening to them until the end of the road!
The older I get the more I appreciate every line in this song, and the music, timeless!

You should totally listen to this entire album uninterrupted. "Great Gig in the Sky" will give you chills and move you to tears. You should also check out "On The Turning Away" - haunting and mesmerizing.
Yeah, Great Gig always brings tears to my eyes, even more so now in my fifties with the number of people I lost.
The tracks on 'Dark side' segue into one another in a sequence, so although you have a journey within each song, the whole album is a journey in itself meant to be listened to in order and in one uninterrupted sitting. Yup, I know, not completely possible without getting blocked, and Floyd's publishers are super tough on copyright issues. The full album experience is what's needed though, otherwise it's like looking at separated petals of a flower, seeing that they're beautiful, but not seeing the entire flower.

Back when this was only a couple of years out a friend of mine told me she didn’t like Pink Floyd. Thought that was odd, so I asked. She said the “notes were too long”.

One of the greatest prog-rock psychedelic bands in the rock scene, along with Rush and Yes. So many awesome songs and amazing albums, top three albums would be Animals, Wish You Were Here, and Darkside of the Moon. Comfortably numb is on The Wall album and Time is on the Darkside of the Moon. Oh yeah, David Gilmore is one of the greatest soul seeking and soul searching guitarists on the planet next to Gary Moore
