This song came out the same year me and my husband were married. So much has happened in our life together but this song is timeless.

It's amazing that this timeless classic was penned, music and lyrics, in about an hour or so at most. Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics over breakfast, handed them off to Elton at the piano, went upstairs to have a shave, and by the time he was done, Elton had written the music from top to bottom. They knew the moment they wrote it that it was something special. The public certainly agreed, since it was their first major hit single (Top 10 in both the US and the UK in 1970 and 1971, respectively). While the lyrics were definitely about the girl Bernie was seeing at the time, "Your Song" has grown to mean far more than that since then. It has become Elton's dedication to his fans. In the more than 4000 concerts Elton has performed in his career, there has barely been a show where he hasn't performed "Your Song". In fact, there's a fantastic video compilation of Elton performing it throughout the decades. It's well worth a watch, if only for the incredible array of costumes he's worn for his concerts.
That's crazy. I've always heard a lot of musicians say that they almost always write music before the lyrics. It's amazing that Taupin can write lyrics without even knowing how it's going to sound! Unless maybe he does have some idea? I'm not sure what his exact process is.

Two John/Taupin songs where the music came first are "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" and "Don't Go Breaking My Heart". Gary Osborne, with whom Elton wrote mainly during the period of 1978-82, wrote lyrics to Elton's music, often fleshing out lyrical ideas that Elton had come up with.
Thank you for the clear explanation about the songs and team Elton John/Bernie Taupin! It's very fascinating how some artists can write songs. It's something magical they have in them, that, to our great joy, comes out into the world. Indeed, in interviews and articles I saw that many writers first have the main musical lines on which they write lyrics. It can be a real work in progress, as you can see in the video Queen - The making of “One Vision”. Sometimes it's pure luck. The melody for "You Win Again" came to Barry Gibb in a dream. And when The Doors only had a few lines to the music of "Peace Frog", they filled out the rest with lyrics from three poems previously written by Jim Morrison.
I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert several years ago, and was pleasantly surprised when I found out my seats, to the side of the stage, gave me the perfect alignment to watch his hands play the entire concert. It was amazing!!
I'm late to the game in learning about reaction videos, but I enjoy seeing younger people experiencing songs like this one for the first time. I've known this song for 50 years, but it still gets me when I take the time to reflect on the lyrics and how they apply to my life. Watching both of you hearing it for the first time reminds me of how amazing these songs are, how they withstand the test of time, and how they can still affect young people today. Please keep doing what you're doing.
I'm 63 years old and I was 12 when Elton broke through with this song. Great reaction, and, as you say Amber, this song is so very humble. Elton wrote the music to his songs and the lyrics were written by the wonderful Bernie Taupin who avoided the limelight. Beautiful, beautiful lyrics to this song which is now 52 years old. How many songs have stood the test of time over such a long period. Genius!!! Thanks again for a very beautiful and heartfelt reaction. Very best wishes from the UK. Take care.
Amber hit it right on the head. This song was just a beautiful gift given to the world. I’ve heard this song for decades but it still gets me emotional every time I hear it. Great reaction. Thank you.
Remember that it is rare for Elton to have ever written lyrics, so he's making you feel someone else's words. And o stage, Elton was one of the ultimate showmen. Liok up his costumes.
This one brought me to tears, it was me and my wife's wedding song a long, long time ago. Macy's in Manhattan used to have a little recording booth where you could record your own "demo" and I made one, singing "Your Song" to her. We unfortunately parted ways a few years ago but the song still brings me back to that time and the simple message of how much I loved her.
For most of his early career, Elton contributed the music and the lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin. They were an incredible songwriting team, as Bernie's words were like poetry, but Elton always found a way to elevate them into something just heavenly.
"Your Song" was one of Sir Elton's biggest hits back in the 70s and still holds so much emotion today. Beautiful lyrics and heartfelt music. One of my favorites of his is "Blue Eyes" and "I Guess Thats Why They Call it the Blues" and, of course, "Daniel"
J & Amber, I love you guys. Thanks! I want to make a request. First I must say that the BEST Elton (and Bernie the lyricist) songs are the - deep cuts. Sure the hits are good, but the deep cuts are fantastic! If you truly want to be blown away, please play - Indian Sunset (specifically the live version w/Ray Cooper in Las Vegas). OMG, you will be amazed by the song and the performance. Rock on.
I truly love seeing the emotion that you both emit while listening to this. Seeing your sweet faces and hearing this beautiful song brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for creating this channel!! ❤
This is the young Elton who burst on the scene with brilliant (mostly simple) songs. He wrote many great ones over the years, but for me...that "Elton John" album was the best, start to finish. Damn, 52 years ago! OMG I am old.
Right there with ya Eric! 59 here and was privileged to grow up with his music and see him in concert, with Billy Joel no less! We might be old but didn't we grow up with the greatest, kick ass music?!
Along with being my favorite Elton John song, this is actually my favorite all-time song. Absolutely beautiful. And, it is amazing that one Bernie handed him the words, it only took him like 20 minutes to write the music to it.
I've been an Elton John fan since I was literally about 10 years old. My favorite part of this song is the heartfelt conversational tone of the lyrics, where he says, "anyway, the thing is...." Just brilliant.
Early live Elton is some of the best. I love these live BBC shows from 1970 and 1971. You could literally pick any song from any one of them and you can't go wrong. Border Song, Madman Across the Water, Levon, Burn Down the Mission. The well is deep.
My favorite song of Elton John. Every time I hear it I’m taken back to my youth. Sitting in the back seat of my parents car listening to “Your Song” on the radio. It brings a smile to my face every time.
Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to the soundtrack of my childhood, then Elton John wrote the music, played and sang it for me. The days of those two having a hit on the radio for, literally, years and years on end will stay with me forever.
HUGE shout out to Bernie Taupin for writing some of most sincere, beautiful lyrics ever and to Elton for composing one of the most stunning melodies ever. This is a perfect song. I highly recommend you listen to Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding - EPIC and so cool. Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting is great for more of a rock vibe, and Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me is fantastic and check out the live performance with George Michael too it's amazing!
I remember this song well. Was played a lot in the bars up here in Canada. Elton's first hit song from the winter of '70 - '71. Another awesome love ballad is 'Sacrifice' from Dec. '89. This song has 436 million plus views on one video.

This was Elton’s first hit and the start of many more to come, what a talented writer and singer! I also think you two are great by expanding your music knowledge
@@Andy-bl2oq Bernie wrote the lyrics then handed them to Elton to compose the music to the words. What legends they are to create countless masterpieces together.
Makes me cry when I hear it as I lost two friends. One passed at 14ys old in 1977. The other was my childhood friend that played this song on the piano when we were kids. She passed in 2013. Love this song as it reminds me of both of them so much! That's the wonderful thing about music..❤️
I'm so thrilled you love this song...Elton's first hit 1970. This "unplugged" version is the best IMO. Just a piano and Elton's heartfelt emotion in his voice speaks right to my soul.
I have only watched one reaction to an Elton song called TICKING. The reactors dubbed it a masterpiece and I completely agree. It is quite long so I understand why people don't choose it but...you REALLY will be BLOWN AWAY by it! (Off of his 1974 album CARIBOU).
Elton is absolutely one of my musical heroes. I've had the pleasure of seeing him live many times. Guys, if you ever get the chance to see him in concert......do it! Great song by an absolute legend 💕
Elton John has a very closed friend called John Lennon. When Lennon passed away Elton wrote a song for him. The song is Empty Garden. I recommend you to listen to this song. I got my favorite Elton's songs, watch this list: Sacrified, One, Circle of life and Can't you feel the love, both from Lion King, the cartoon movie, Club at the end of the street, Healing hands, Goodbye Yellow brick road, California freedom, i wanna Kiss the bride, Candle in the wind (a tribute to Marilyn Monroe), Crocodile rock, rocket man, Sorry seems to be the hardest word, Blue eyes.
The reason this one is "broken down" as Jay has described it is because you're listening to a live performance. The studio version, which was released as the single, has a full string section behind him, which I suspect was replaced in this live performance by a synth. "Your Song" was his debut single when we first learned of him in 1970. A huge hit, and for my money, perhaps his best song. He had so many other great ones through the years, but I'm not sure there was ever one any better. If you ever want to just throw an album on and let it track, listen to his "Tumbleweed Connection" album. Just lay back and enjoy.
Technically his debut single was a song called 'I've been loving you' in 1968 it just wasn't a hit. He had a few singles before this. Your Song was just his first hit song that finally got the worlds attention.
I only have to say that if he has a single regret to his recording career it’s that bubblegum pop he did with KiKi Dee, “Don’t go Breaking My Heart” Not that the song is that terrible, (it is catchy as hell), but I personally believe it’s well beneath Sir Elton’s talents
@@Willie_McBride Nah, it's the variety of tunes and styles that make a great artist standout over time and last through the ages. "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" fit well in the time and moment it was created. He has a ton of great duets and larger collaboration groups. =)
As you are into Elton John and his great, heart-felt lyrics, you should react to some Neil Diamond. Amazing singer songwriter- some to get you stated "I am I said" "Play me" "Yesterday's Songs" "September morn" "Love on the Rocks (album version, not cut down video-promo version) "Longfellow Serenade" "Forever in Blue Jeans"
Oh my gosh, you paused that at the worst moment possible lol! I hope you listen to this again straight through! Elton certainly knew how to create amazing music! Such a talented man. I’ll be seeing him in September in DC. Very expensive tickets, but worth it to see this legend.
I first saw Elton John in concert in the early 1970’s at Madison Square Garden. Every time this great man came to town on tour, I went to see him, you can add up the numbers. In Elton’s later years, this was an encore song, and here’s the thing: Elton played piano, and we sang Your Song to him..the entire audience. I just saw him on his final tour, and he brought this song back into the regular part of the concert and sang it to us again. This song is magic.
Amber, it's amazing what a great song can do. I was on middle school when I heard this. Everyone reacted exactly like you did! Separated by 40 years and yet the same emotions are touched. That's timeless! Great reaction video.

Hey Jay and Amber!!! I know this was already mentioned, Bernie Taupin was Elton John's Lyricist for all those great songs!! And things that he (Bernie) experienced that he wrote about. Elton does such a great job conveying what Bernie wrote that you would think he went through it! Elton just writes the music 🎵🎶. But what great music it is!!!
His best songs, “Daniel” “Don’t Let The Song Go Down On Me” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” “Rocket Man” “Honkey Cat” and “Saturday Night’s All Right For Fighting” The Bitch Is Back”. His first 5 years, 69-74 are nothing less than phenomenal. His music and a Bernie Taupin’s lyrics are unparalleled. His work in the 2nd half of the 70’s was unremarkable with some decent but not classic songs. He has sporadic hits in the 80’s & 90’s some of the excellent: “Empty Garden”, “I’m Still Standing”, “Club At The End of the Street” “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues”.
I remember the first time hearing this. It was at the start of summer break after my freshman year at university and it had just come out. I was walking down the hall leaving the dorm to go back home and I heard this playing on someone’s radio and I instantly fell in love with Elton John and this song. It had been a very difficult year, 1970, but something about that melody touched me deeply and made me believe that things would get better. Thank you for reacting to one of my all time favorites!
How much more wonderful life has been for the rest of us for more than 50 years thanks to the musical genius of Elton John, and it started with this song, 'Your Song,' back in '71. He's had countless great songs but I'd suggest, Amber, you would love hearing either his dedication to Marilyn Monroe, 'Candle in the Wind,' or his tribute to Princess Di, ' Goodbye England's Rose.' Same tune, different lyrics. You can't go wrong hearing songs by Elton John, Neil Diamond, Roy Orbison, Cat Stevens.. thanks so much for your excellent and heartfelt reactions!.
I grew up listening to Elton John and can't think of a single song of his I haven't loved. He has something for every mood and every situation... Another awesome reaction😊
This is one of my favorite songs of Elton and Bernie’s. But I have to admit that I like the studio version a little better. You hear the piano stronger in it. If you get a chance, listen to that version. Thank you!

This song never really got my teary before but this time when he was talking about how wonderful it is that you're in the world all I could think about were all the family I've lost over the past 2 years and it got to me.
Elton wrote a Broadway show called Aida. The star of that show, Heather Headley, won a Tony award for her performance. When Elton won the Kennedy Center Honor, Heather sang Your Song in tribute to him. It's a stunning version and Elton was very moved. If you want, you should definitely do a reaction to her version. Love Elton John, I’m going to his concert next Saturday!!! So excited!
Thank you.
This song is a warm hug. I can't hear it without crying.
Remember that it is rare for Elton to have ever written lyrics, so he's making you feel someone else's words. And o stage, Elton was one of the ultimate showmen. Liok up his costumes.
Bernie Taupin, lyricist.
Bernie and his beautiful lyrics. ❤❤❤
Your reply has brought me to tears. Thank you for sharing.
@@MissRobbiOKC thank you so much Robbi! Love seeing OKC family in here!
My favorite song by Elton; so simple and beautiful. I still remember when and where I was when I first heard it.
It was Bernie Taupin who wrote the songs.
ruclips.net/video/J39XajnpFV8/видео.html sub if you mess with it! 🤌🏽
Excellent list! I was going to mention all of these, along with Daniel, for one, as suggestions for reaction videos.
Sir Elton never disappoints. Yellow Brick Road one of my favourite albums.🌻
One of the greatest albums of all time!
I totally agree 100%. (Except for "Bennie And The Jets". Sorry, but I hate that song.
An amazing masterpiece from Elton and Bernie, Elton's beautiful piano fits Bernie's lyrics perfectly. This is perhaps one of the best love songs ever!
And THAT is why Elton is the King AND the Queen of all things:)
"Empty Garden" by Elton was about losing one of his best friends...John Lennon.🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤
I sometimes have a hard time listening to 'Empty Garden'.
My favorite Elton John song
I remember this song well. Was played a lot in the bars up here in Canada. Elton's first hit song from the winter of '70 - '71.
Another awesome love ballad is 'Sacrifice' from Dec. '89. This song has 436 million plus views on one video.
A beautiful song. From the '70s. For more love songs react to:
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by
Roberta Flack
With You I'm Born Again - Billy Preston
and Syreeta Wright
Here and Now - Luther Vandross
This is the first song from Elton that I heard. I think it's one of the prettiest love songs ever written. The man is Brilliant!!
This was Elton’s first hit and the start of many more to come, what a talented writer and singer! I also think you two are great by expanding your music knowledge
He never wrote a song bernie did
@@Andy-bl2oq Bernie wrote the lyrics then handed them to Elton to compose the music to the words. What legends they are to create countless masterpieces together.
I've always felt that this song was meant for every single person. That we could ALL say it was OUR song.
Makes me cry when I hear it as I lost two friends. One passed at 14ys old in 1977. The other was my childhood friend that played this song on the piano when we were kids. She passed in 2013. Love this song as it reminds me of both of them so much! That's the wonderful thing about music..❤️
Early Elton 70s to early 80s Elton is pretty incredible, that raw combination of him and Benny Turpin, amazing.
Bernie Taupin
I'm so thrilled you love this song...Elton's first hit 1970. This "unplugged" version is the best IMO. Just a piano and Elton's heartfelt emotion in his voice speaks right to my soul.
Tumbleweed Connection is my favorite album. Followed by Madman Across the Water, that period of his and Bernie’s career was spectacular!
I have only watched one reaction to an Elton song called TICKING. The reactors dubbed it a masterpiece and I completely agree.
It is quite long so I understand why people don't choose it but...you REALLY will be BLOWN AWAY by it!
(Off of his 1974 album CARIBOU).
This was his first breakout hit! His melody with Bernie Taupins lyrics became the formula for very many great songs!
Bernie Taupin wrote some of the greatest lyrics ever. Married to Reg's music its exquisite
A beautiful song. His first big hit and one of my favorites.
Just lay back and enjoy.
ruclips.net/video/eEnBRoCZdUg/видео.html
There's a live version done with a symphony that's gorgeous.
A great album indeed
Technically his debut single was a song called 'I've been loving you' in 1968 it just wasn't a hit. He had a few singles before this. Your Song was just his first hit song that finally got the worlds attention.
I had read that this was Princess Diana's favorite song by Elton John. 💌
There's no bad Elton John song, but I'll keep pushing "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues" for a reaction. =)
It is a must.
If you walk up to Elton and say "Leather Jackets" he will reach into his pocket and give you your $8 back.
I only have to say that if he has a single regret to his recording career it’s that bubblegum pop he did with KiKi Dee, “Don’t go Breaking My Heart”
Not that the song is that terrible, (it is catchy as hell), but I personally believe it’s well beneath Sir Elton’s talents
Great song!
@@Willie_McBride Nah, it's the variety of tunes and styles that make a great artist standout over time and last through the ages. "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" fit well in the time and moment it was created. He has a ton of great duets and larger collaboration groups. =)
That was my favorite all time Elton song.
Don't forget that Bernie Taupin was (is?) Elton's main lyricist.
Elton John didn’t write lyrics…. Bernie Taupin did, Elton worked out the tunes.
Oh my gosh, you paused that at the worst moment possible lol! I hope you listen to this again straight through! Elton certainly knew how to create amazing music! Such a talented man. I’ll be seeing him in September in DC. Very expensive tickets, but worth it to see this legend.
Hey Amber! I love how you described the song. A humble offering telling someone how much they are loved.
One of my favorite songs. This song sums up how I feel about my wife . I've sent this to her on her email several times. Thank you for reviewing it.
soooo beautiful.......
Yay! You guys are finally reacting to Elton and Bernie's break out hit! 💗 Such a beautiful song and a beautiful reaction.. much love! 😊
Amber, it's amazing what a great song can do. I was on middle school when I heard this. Everyone reacted exactly like you did! Separated by 40 years and yet the same emotions are touched. That's timeless! Great reaction video.
Man, this is just a timeless song. So beautiful 😍 There are so many to suggest it's hard to name just a few!
Tiny Dancer
Goodbye yellow brick road
Benny and the Jets
I guess that's why they call it the blues
Candle in the wind
Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Daniel, Candle in the Wind (both versions) , Empty Garden. All heartfelt Elton John songs; all wonderful.
You HAVE to hear his duet with George Michael on "Don't let the sun go down on me". It's a live performance and it is epic.
I grew up listening to Elton John and can't think of a single song of his I haven't loved. He has something for every mood and every situation...
Another awesome reaction😊
First song I ever heard from Elton John. Always brings back memories. Beautiful song
First song for me, too. On the Andy William's Show. Had never heard of Elton before.
Truly one of the greatest.... Such a huge talent.
É minha música predileta desse monstro da música, igual a Elton John não existirá jamais, choro toda vez que ouço essa melodia perfeita.
Hands down my favourite Elton John song! ❤ A true masterpiece!
"Sorry seems to be the hardest word" Elton and his Piano.
And don't forget Philadelphia Freedom, one of my very favorites!
This is one of my favorite songs of Elton and Bernie’s. But I have to admit that I like the studio version a little better. You hear the piano stronger in it. If you get a chance, listen to that version. Thank you!
Hi guys, great reaction and sharing your thoughts. You guys picked the right video to watch and listen to for your first time. Elton just nailed this song in this. His voice and all the little flex he put into this song.
THIS IS HIS BIGGEST MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the many great songs from Elton
Hey guys,
Amber … You have no idea what this song means to me!! ☺️
It’s in my top 3 OF ALL TIMES!!
I almost stopped breathing when Jay paused it right before the most crucial lyric 😩
It’s like you read my mind when you told him to rewind it! 😁
Check out the recorded version. It’s pure perfection!
❤️🙏🏽
I felt the same way! I think my first response was, Oh Nooooo! That was followed by aargh! aargh! aargh! until Amber - thank you *so* much, Amber! - got Jay to rewind a bit to catch the full effect. Whew!
I so agree!!!!!!
If you are looking for emotional songs from Sir Elton, try "Sacrifice", "The One" and especially "The Last Song". That one is about the reaction of a young man dying of Aids to his father visiting him.
He was 24 when he recorded this song. He is now 77 his voice is still amazing and his music still relevant.
Just ***( Epic )*** till the end of time .
Watching you two experience this is such a joy. It was like hearing it for the first time all over again.
His songs are timeless...his music just transcends generations and eras. He truly is Sir Elton, the greatest of all time. His partnership with Bernie Taupin(writer of the lyrics) has no equal!
Y'all need to do Tiny Dancer, imo his greatest song!!
They've already reacted to Tiny Dancer.
@@AzaleaLala missed it
I’m so glad I checked out the Rob Squad before heading to bed. You just made my night! Your Song is my favorite song of ALL TIMES! It’s such a simple, beautiful song.
Sir Elton has so many masterpieces. Here are my recommendations for your next reactions:
1. Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word.
2. Don’t go Breaking My Heart (with Kiki Dee)
3.Song for Guy
4. Circle of Life
5. The One
6. Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding
7. Sacrifice
8. Daniel
9. I Want Love
10. Tonight
You should listen to the duet Elton sings with George Michael. Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me. It's live and it's EPIC!!
THIS!!
Enjoyed Elton John in concert hearing his great music.
If you want to see Elton's playing at its finest (IMO), check out "Madman Across The Water" live 1971. So much sound from just 3 guys. Piano, bass & drums. Awesome performance.
Absolutely! That performance is incredible! 👏
One of the best albums ever. I saw him at the Greek Theater in L..A. just before "Madman" came out. He did the whole album as an encore. Unbelievable!
My favorite album .
Yeah,it's super cool!
It's worth it.
