Such an emotional yet beautiful song! Hold your loved ones close today! ❤
Bread was a nice blast from the past - thankyou. Have you ever heard or Eagle Rock by Daddy Cool? Australian band- about 1972. Lead singer Ross Wilson wrote the beautiful song that John Farnham sings called 'A Touch of Paradise '
@@heatherwickstead7980 I haven’t! I’ll have to check that out! Appreciate it! 😄
Most of Bread's songs were ballads but some of the most beautiful ever written. Their big hits included "If" and "It Don't Matter to Me"
David Gates (vocalist) wrote it about his father that passed away
So beautiful! ❤️
@@setonhillstudioskilled by a drunk-driver.
That this is about his father is what always kills me when I hear this song.
@@michaeltveten8458 So terrible! 😞
He said "The finest years I ever knew were all the years I had with you"
Gotcha! Misheard it! Thanks for the correction!
@@setonhillstudios awesome Thanks
"You never said too much, but still you showed the way. And I knew from watching you." That is how a father teaches his child. Makes me cry every time.
David is still married to his high school sweetheart, whom he married in 1959! They have four children, who have all become successful in their adult lives. I think that shows that his parents taught him well.
@@thomasmacdiarmid8251 That is heartwarming info to hear. Thank you!
Timeless, but too sad to listen to often. 2024
@@doloresschultz6804 I know what you mean. There are some musicians/bands that really fit that description. Bread is one. I also have a hard time listening to The Carpenters, even though their songs are beautiful.
Bread is a master class of lyrical song writing.
My wife passed away from breast cancer 12 years ago. I’ve since remarried, and live a very happy life, but this song…
This song gets me every time 😢
So sorry for your loss and thanks for hanging out! Hope this blessed you in some way! 🙏🏻
Thank you so much! You are very much appreciated!
🌼🦋🤍
The finest years I ever knew were all the years I HAD with you, not hated you. Awesome song. Loved Bread back then and now.
One of the very few songs that brings a tear to my eye. When artists write about losing loved ones it can deep. I played this one out in my yard during the Pandemic. I love that beat
Such a beautiful tune man! ❤️
“All the years I had with you”
Thanks for the correction! 😄
There is no stronger or more real love than that between a parent and a child.
I suggest that is a personal opinion and interpretation of their own experience.
@@MoMoMyPup10 Of course it is, I agree. I imagine most would agree with that caveat.
Such a touching song! David Gates wrote this song in memory of his father who died in 1963 & never saw the success he achieved with Bread. Love David Gates voice. He has one of the most soothing & mellow voices. They had so many hits such as "If", "Make It With You", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Lost Without Your Love", "It Don't Matter To Me", "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender", "Diary", "Aubrey" etc. In 1978, Gates enjoyed success as a solo artist with the hit singles "Goodbye Girl" (from the movie The Goodbye Girl) & "Took The Last Train".
Wow! Thanks for all the insight and the recommendations! This was so beautiful and I can’t wait to hear more from them!
@@setonhillstudios, if you make “Bread” a part of your “diet,” you’ll be hooked forever! Great reaction to a tender song of a son’s love for his Dad!
Always said that if you want to mellow out, listen to Bread. My favorite of theirs is "Guitar Man", which I highly suggest.
Mine too. Guitar Man, Aubrey and Lost Without Your Love, favorite Gates songs.
I grew up listening to that album. My sister Annie owed it & loved it also. Brings me to tears, because she was such a romantic yet never found true love & passed from cancer @ 52 yrs, eleven yrs ago. I know I have survivors guilt. I’ve been married 38 yrs & have six great kids. Breaks my heart that she didn’t get that.
So sorry for your loss! 🙏🏻 Thank you for swinging by the channel today. ❤️
🌼
It made you think, it made you feel, mission accomplished.
💯 Thanks for watching!
In memory of my beloved Soul mate, J. Giffin, killed 12/23/1978 by a drunk driver.
"I would give everything..."
So sorry for your loss! ❤️
Bread absolutely the best
If you are going to listen to Bread for the first time, this is the song to listen to. Great song. Thanks for the reaction.
My dad got me into listening to these guys when I was really young. He was a Vietnam Vet and got me into a lot of great music. When he passed in 2006, I heard this song on the radio. I lost it and wept.
Im 52 years old now, and this song still chokes me up and brings tears to my eyes.
So sorry for your loss and I’m sure you are so proud of your dad and his service to this country! Definitely a beautiful yet emotional song! Thanks so much for sharing and I hope you have a great day!
@@setonhillstudios thank you. I was really close to him. When he passed, it seemed like every station wanted to play sad songs. Another that hit me hard was John Michael Montgomey's I Miss You A Little. Not a country fan, but that is a really emotionally deep song.
"If" and "It Don't Matter To Me" are two that you don't wanna miss. New sub
Thanks for the suggestions and really appreciate the sub! Have a great one! 😄
Bread had so many great songs, especially on this album. "Diary"
lost my dad in 2020, i heard this song and it gets me every time. i miss my dad.
So sorry for your loss! 🙏🏻 Thanks for hanging out and have a blessed day!
@@setonhillstudios Thank You, enjoy your channel and your real heartfelt reactions
Masterpiece ! Early 70's, WOW !
You are so fortunate to still have both your parents. Cherish them.
Follow this with the song "If" and hold on to your heart.
when i was a kid and heard this song i always imagined it referring to lovers no longer together, but now that i am ancient i realize the lyrics can really be applied to anyone you love: parents, grandparents, children, siblings, even very close friends. love is love and thats really all there is.
Hey Lavender_Granny, I'm gonna whisper this so only you can hear me... Don't tell anyone, but I had never realized who it was really about until I saw this reaction video. I have thought it was an old lover, etc. for fifty years!!! Some of the lines make a lot more sense now! ☺
Such a moving song with a message that we all need to remember and never forget.
This song was written in honor of his father !❤
You have no soul if this song doesn't make you cry.
If this doesn’t affect someone, they truly have no heart.
Definitely an emotional experience! ❤️
Yes Bread had some beautiful songs! The Guitar Man, Make It With You and If are some more greats!
"If" might hit the feels also, but it's good.
Several years ago we lost our youngest son Colton, 27, to a heart attack. My wife was inconsolable and it fell to me to be the strong one and get us all through this living nightmare. I was able to maintain a stoic front, but whenever I'd hear this song it was time to seek privacy because I knew I'd soon be sobbing my guts out.....just like now.
@@Martin.Wilson Oh wow! I am so sorry man and my prayers are with you and your family! 😞 I cannot imagine what you’ve been through but I hope in some tiny way this gave you an ounce of comfort! Once again, I am so sorry! 🙏🏻
Truly a great band that has been forgotten over time. These guys have an entire library of beautiful, wonderful songs that melt my headbanging heart!!!
I am with you 100 % ! I am a Metal Head but this song makes my heart melt and eyes water ! The early 70's so many great songs like this !
Craig, and Mike below, your posts are great, funny and heartwarming! Haha...Really, really cool! 😎
Oh wow I wasn’t expecting this today my dad passed away 2008 so I was on my mind, but I was blessed to have had him ❤🙏
So sorry for your loss and I hope this was a blessing to you! Have a great day Sal!
This song always gets me! Even when I was a kid when it came out.😢😊🔥🤘✌
It sounds like a love song. It was written after losing his dad. So...I guess it is a love song♥
Wow. I never paid much attention to this song as a kid growing up hearing it. I didn't pay much attention to the lyrics, obviously. I just assumed it was another song about a girl he loved that left him. My father left us when I was around 12 and he wasn't in our lives very much after that. For the next 45 years it was an on and off again relationship. He just passed this year and now this song has got me all inside my feelings and I don't like it one bit.
Men, please stay in your children's lives even if you and mama don't see eye to eye. They need you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😢😢
Yes. I'm nearing the end of the race, but even now, I can say Amen to this.
In 1988 everyone bought this album. Her self-titled album, was nominated for 6 Grammy's that year. Tracy won 3 Grammy's including "Best New The song Fast Car was the song heard on every radio station. Tracy and her song Fast car were a real phenomenon in 1988.
This is the song I played at Mom's funeral. It always reminds me of her😢
So sorry for your loss! 🙏🏻 Thanks for sharing and I hope this gave you some tiny bit of relief in some way! Have a blessed day!
"Guitar man" is my favorite song of theirs....they have so many hits!
My Dad's favorite band. We heard this on every road trip. Great reaction. ❤🎉
i think the lyric was " all the years I had with you" not hated you
Yes-- that is DEF the lyric. T
Appreciate the correction!
Exactly
What a great Band! They were one of my fav bands at the time.
Great to see Bread here. They are my favourite 70s band. I play their songs regularly. David Gates beautiful lyrics and voice.❤
I’ve probably heard this song thousands of times, but hearing it through you was just so meaningful and special. You are kind and good and a joy to share these special pieces with! Loved this!!💕
Really appreciate the kind words! Means alot and thanks for hanging out! 😀
Such a moving classic!
This is a beautiful song. Bread are icons. I am 68 and I loved this song then and I still love it today! Love your reaction!
So glad you enjoyed it! Such a beautiful song and can’t wait to hear more!
I'm also 68 (actually 69 soon), and my appreciation for this song has skyrocketed in these latter years. My heart aches so much each time I listen to it. This, and "IF". ❤
I always understood thee name BREAD to mean the basic stuff we need to sustain life. The kind of thoughtful lyrics in the music would seem to affirm that.
BEGINNING LYRICS::::You sheltered me from harm
Kept me warm, kept me warm
You GAVE my life to me
Set me free, set me free
The finest years I ever knew
Were all the years I HAD with you (NOT HATE)
And I would give anything I own
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own
Just to have you back again
You taught me how to love
What it's of, what it's of
You never said too much
But still you showed the way
And I knew from watching you
Nobody else could ever know
The part of me that can't let go
Thanks for the correction and insight! Very beautiful!
Everything Bread is spectacular! Heavenly voice
It's always ok to cry when something as powerful as music can move you. Audiences want to see reactors' true raw emotions... that's what makes a great channel. It was nice seeing you let your guard down a little at the end. Embrace it, don't fight it.
Keep the journey going! :)
Bread is underrated! If this one broke you, listen to “Diary.”
Perfect example of how important it is to have a good father. This song. You and your father. I had a wonderful father as well and my heart goes out to those who were not, or are not as lucky.
It's SO true...if my folks were still here I would have SO many things I would say to them, mostly THANK YOU.
Sitting here listening to your beautiful words, I can attest to them all. I'm 70 yrs young & yes, life is short. Think carefully about your decisions, you can't take the hurt back once it's done.
Thank you for the wisdom! Have a blessed day and appreciate you hanging out with me! 😃
The finest years I ever knew, where the years I had with you!
Well done Stephen; good to see your softer, introspective side. Great to hear your love and thoughts about your parents and boys. Keep the faith and show the love.
Thanks so much Milton! Hope you’re doing well and have a great day! 😀
I was just listening to Bread this morning! They have been a staple in my music preferences since i was a kid in high school. 😊 thanks for the reaction! Their song Sweet Surrender is awesome, too! ❤
One of my favorite songs growing up.
Although best-known for their gorgeous ballads, they could rock out, too. "Down on My Knees," "Mother Freedom," "Let Your Love Go," and many other superb uptempo songs.
Bread is one of my favorite groups from the 70's. Love their soft music & beautiful lyrics! Brings me to tears sometimes!
It comes back to the old saying you don't know what you got until it's gone
Outstanding vibe .
More , please and thank you!
Really appreciate it! Thanks for hanging out! 😃
New listener and subscriber - I cannot hear this song without thinking about my Dad who passed away 25 years ago. I still think about him every single day. I know he's in a better place. He was a good man, a Christian man, and I know he is in heaven. He was a single father to me & my sister and it was like losing two parents when he died. I was lucky enough to be able to tell him what a wonderful father he was and how thankful I was for him. A lot of people don't get that chance. Tell the important people in your life that you love them while you have the chance. Good review-you got the message :-)
@@luckylisa5496 First off, so sorry for your loss and thanks for sharing! Life is truly short and I’m so glad you got to share those things with your father before he passed! Thanks for stopping by and have a blessed day! 😄
Bread was wonderful! I saw them in 1977 in Norman, Oklahoma! Listen to Aubrey! One of the prettiest songs ever!
Always been my favorite group.
All the years I had with you...not hated you
Great band
Took my mom for granted for years. She’s gone now, just wish I could talk to her one more time.
So sorry for your loss! 🙏🏻
I've always loved Bread. Listen to other ones. They are amazing.
Thank you. 😊
Thanks so much.🤗
Totally relate to what this song made you reflect on. In my 20’s and early 30’s I was buying a lot of stuff. Once I hit my 40’s, I started getting rid of a lot of that stuff I didn’t need, and spending more on experiences (dinner, activities, or travel with family and friends).
Great start as writer s from a great like the writer with the cowsills and great country music billy cowsills great singer
Awesome Song!!! ❤
Listen to Bread to soak up the tears.
Great way of putting it! 😄
Heartfelt analysis. I subscribed today. I first heard this song over 50 years ago. It still brings tears to my eyes.

David Gates, one of the finest songwriters of all time, wrote this song in memory of his father when he passed away. A lot of singer songwriters did things like that, like Dan Fogelberg did with Leader of the Band.
“Leader of the Band” is a great song.
Guitar Man is a life story of a musician by Bread.
Seen them live in 1976 it was my first rock concert great show
Your next song really should be IF by Bread
🌸 damn it you made me cry
Very emotional tune! Have a great one!
I’ve seen a half dozen reactions to this track… yours by far is the best ❤

Beautiful choice. A song that has become a hidden gem. I remember back in the day when it came out. It's always brought up so much emotion for me. Each year, each decade, it becomes more and more important and true. Thanks!
Much of singer/songwriter David Gates' songs he wrote to TUG AT YOUR HEART STRING. Gates & Bread were known in the 70s for their soft rock songs. If, Make It With You, Baby I'm A Want You, Lost Without Your Love, Diary, It Don't Matter To Me, Aubrey, Guitar Man, and Goodbye Girl are touching songs written and sung by Gates.
Been listening to this and other Bread music since the 70's
If, Diary, and Aubry are all Bread songs that hit the feels. They did have one hit that was sort of a rocker called Mother Freedom.
Thank you for a favorite song from my teen years. I can relate to it so much more now as a senior adult. Missing my mom and dad.💔
Thanks for sharing and I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Life moves fast and we have to enjoy every moment! Have a blessed day and appreciate you hanging out! 🙏🏻
WOW! Thank You! I loved Bread back in the day. Just a few suggestions: "Baby, I'm-A Want You," "Guitar Man," "Make It With You"

Really appreciate that! You made my day! ❤️
Bread was a term used in the 70's which was referring to money, hey you got any bread is hey you got any money.
David Gates had the most beautiful, pure voice. Throw a dart at any song and you'll hear pure talent in songwriting. Check out "Diary", "If" or any of their multiple hits. I wore this album out. It really resonated with me as a teenager. David Gates sounds just as great live!
he said all years I had with you ( not hated you )

It is but now that I am old and have lost both of my parents I see it totally different and appreciate it so much more.
