The lead singer, David Gates, wrote this song for his father, who died before David achieved success.
One of their best songs is "If"

@@telynns8490 You are so right. I had always thought it was about a lost lover relationship until I saw them in concert back in the 70's. David Gates talked to the audience a bit between songs and told us that it was written about his father that passed away. It's funny how you can think a song is about one thing and it can be about something else entirely, but the lyrics can make sense for both. My parents were both alive back then so it didn't hit me as hard as it does now when I hear it.

It is so funny. My Sweetie and I were watching reaction videos and I said to him,I don't think I have ever seen anyone react to the group Bread. My all time fav older group. I'm 60 and I remember my brothers playing their songs then I loved them and still have the 45 record with "If" on one side & "Everything I Own" on the other in my hope chest. Then I looked and saw you did a reaction to this song. My tears flow like a river because I lost my Dad in 1996 & then my Mom in 2022. My Sweetie lost his Dad in 2014 and his Mom 2023. I was just crying yesterday because I and my Sweetie are going thru serious health struggles and I just wanted to talk to my Mom so so bad. She was the only one who has known me forever and gave me life while almost losing hers in the process. Now turning 60 this year and not having a parent at all is rough & you have regrets regardless. My Mom and I spoke everyday and each night we called each other to say one was going to bed and that we loved each other. I still sometimes will grab the phone at 10pm and say,I'm going to call my Mom to tell her goodnight and I Love her but then it hits me all over again.
If ya still have parents alive, don't take one day for granted. Call them, text them, send them cards, letters, funny notes, flowers when can or if ya live close, stop by,visit with them at least weekly, take them out to eat or take them a meal & eat with them. Just be with them as much as ya can because life is short and getting old gets lonely too for so many.
Thank you for this reaction.❤ Blessings from SC 🙋‍♀️👍❤️✝️

@@danbreuer Cool! Yeah, I was never a concert goer myself, preferred listening away from crowds but a friend bought these tickets that included backstage passes and I was at the right place right time. After the concert though when going backstage and my friend and I seeing David Gates walk over, I was nervous. He was super nice. Chatted a little then he asked if we wanted to go upstairs to meet the band but me being a Christian and young, all sorts of sordid things I imagined would happen should I go....lol...
But I politely said no, I just came to hear the songs and had to go. David I'm certain understood my unease. He just smiled and like I said, such a real gentleman. Now I kick myself for not thinking about grabbing a camera...

I used to slow dance to this song. 😊 Good times!
I was a teenager then. I didn't quite understand the full meaning of the song because I had not experienced loss before. I do now. I took care of my mother till she went home to rest with the Lord and back in the arms of my father. What would she had wanted me to do? Not to grieve her absence? She knew that that pain nerver leaves. The pain stays there. But one thing she taught me was that with time you learn how to live and function with that pain. My friend, death is part of life. We will go through it as well. Nothing to fear. Now is the most important time of your life! What was past, there is nothing we can do about it. The future nobody knows. Now is all we have. Make this moment count. I heard you with "American Pie" when you said about how difficult is for you to even mention death. Well. The sooner you learn to accept that reality, the better. Well... That teenage boy that slowed danced to that song is sixty one now. Every season has its own beauty. Face them gratefully. Remember, this life is just a school...
    Much love señor.
    Your (tío) Jaime

BP, you are a REAL man! A real man isn’t afraid to show their feelings; isn’t afraid to be vulnerable. If this song doesn’t tug at your heartstrings, then you aren’t human. I love your reactions. I love how you try to identify with each song you react to. You are the only channel I watch that I never, ever skip your ‘talking’ parts. Now you must do their song “If”. It’s a beautiful love song. ❤

I lost my father in the early 70s when this song came out. I was a young teenager. I used to play this song and think of him. Fast forward to the 20teens and I lost my wife. I played this song at her funeral. The best years I've ever know were with her.

I remember this song from when I was a kid. I forgot how beautiful it is. I just lost my Mom last year. I am in tears.
